Season › 2019-20 › News Meis exploring salvaged plastics option for Bramley-Moore seating Friday, 24 January, 2020 83comments | Jump to most recent Dan Meis, the architect leading the design of Everton's proposed new ground, says that he and his firm will be looking into the feasibility of using recycled plastics for the stadium's seats. Meis, an avowed environmentalist who often expresses pro-green messages via his Twitter account, told Sky Sports News that the size of the structure and the amount of plastic that goes into manufacturing seats presents an opportunity for Everton to have a positive impact with Bramley-Moore Dock. "It occurred to me that a big part of our stadiums are seats that are plastic and surely there must be a way to rethink this," Meis said. "It's something we had never really looked at before so right now we are looking at designing a prototype of a stadium seat with a significant amount of recovered seat plastic. "The entire world is becoming more sensitive to the environment every day, thankfully, and stadiums are one of the last building types that are getting that consideration. "Because they're so big, if you can make intelligent decisions about materials and how you source them, you can really make a big impact." Sky reported that Sky Ocean Rescue ambassador, Emily Penn, visited Everton yesterday as part of her organisation's efforts to help Premier League clubs reduce their use of single-use plastics, partiuclarly with regard to disposable beverage cups. My mum wants to come to games and she's disabled, seats are a required. I see your point as the atmosphere would be class, but some people need it. Mark Tanton 3 Posted 24/01/2020 at 06:12:34 Just take the wooden Paddock seats with us in carrier bags - there's life in them yet. Phil Sammon 4 Posted 24/01/2020 at 06:39:03 An ‘avowed environmentalist' and an architect but it's only just occurred to him that recycled materials can be used in buildings. Isn't this pretty obvious stuff?I've heard Kenwright is insisting on ivory seating in the Directors Box. Bren Doyle 5 Posted 24/01/2020 at 08:06:19 This is really refreshing to hear. With climate change approaching faster than most people appreciate, it's good to see our local club putting its stamp on environmental well being like this.Good on you, Everton FC!! Paul Kelly 6 Posted 24/01/2020 at 08:19:23 Your wrong Phil, I have it on good authority that Bill's seat will be made of the Arteta money and the dreams of the average fan. Joe McMahon 7 Posted 24/01/2020 at 08:20:00 At the moment I'm more concerned with what happens on the pitch. The only concern for me about the stadium is the 52k capacity. When reds are ramming it all at us in a few weeks we can come back with gave you seen the plans for our plastic seats fir 2024! Chris Mason 8 Posted 24/01/2020 at 08:49:34 Paul that's classic Eddie Dunn 9 Posted 24/01/2020 at 10:20:48 It won't matter what the seats are made of if the forcasts for sea level increases are accurate. The new ground will be under a couple of metres of water in thirty years. Goodison is 47metres above current sea level. The only sport long-term at Bramley Moore will be water polo! Alan Johnson 10 Posted 24/01/2020 at 10:21:22 Paul #6 Think you've solved this long standing mystery. Alex Carew 11 Posted 24/01/2020 at 10:31:00 What next? Build it out of LEGO? Colin Glassar 12 Posted 24/01/2020 at 10:32:06 Paul, BK's throne will be made out of recycled lawnmowers. It will be bigger and better than the one in Game of Thrones. Alex Carew 13 Posted 24/01/2020 at 10:36:02 Bills gonna have a heated handlebar with a caged pen around him. Paul Jones 14 Posted 24/01/2020 at 10:37:52 I think it's good that the club are making the effort to build a greener solution (particularly given the site's waterfront location and the thread of rising sea levels!)I'm just glad we're not trying to emulate Forest (Greener Than) Green who have put forward planning for an all-wooden stadium. Looks like a fire risk waiting to happen to me!!!! Brian Williams 15 Posted 24/01/2020 at 10:38:25 Must make a note in my diary not to renew my season ticket after 2048-49 season. 🤽 Alan McGuffog 16 Posted 24/01/2020 at 11:54:40 And here was me, worrying. Jer Kiernan 17 Posted 24/01/2020 at 12:08:23 @ Paul You are getting as bad as your namesake and fellow TWebber Pat for bittin humourous sarcasm !! Keep up the good work :) Paul Kelly 18 Posted 24/01/2020 at 12:34:04 The best line ever from an architect "It occurred to me that a big part of our stadiums are seats that are plastic . "Ok, that settles any arguement then. Drew O'Neall 19 Posted 24/01/2020 at 12:37:23 Sympathetic touch by the architect coordinating recycled plastic seats with the rubbish on the pitch. Frank Key 20 Posted 24/01/2020 at 12:43:40 Plenty of plastic shite fans will be flooding the city soon so there should be no shortage Peter Gorman 21 Posted 24/01/2020 at 13:02:11 What Drew said. Michael Fox 22 Posted 24/01/2020 at 14:24:13 Pity we can't recycle half the team, but they wouldn't even make compost. Danny Broderick 23 Posted 24/01/2020 at 15:15:48 Yes they would Michael. Most of them are a load of shite! Derek Taylor 24 Posted 24/01/2020 at 16:09:09 Being serious for a moment, has there actually been any survey in respect of rising water levels ? Eddie Dunn 25 Posted 24/01/2020 at 17:07:23 Derek- there was a programme on R4 a few weeks ago(can't recall the name) in which scientists estimated sea-level rise in relation to climate change and they concluded that we will see the water rising as a delayed effect. However they expected a rise of a couple of metres in the next twenty years or so. It could be quicker. If they are correct, it will be money wasted.I wouldn't be surprised if this question comes up in the planning dept and causes a big problem for the project.Goodison was built in 1892 and so it has served the club for 128 years. Your average lifespan of a concrete structure is between 75-100 years, so it would be folly to build on the docks as the science suggests that the ground will be under water fairly soon.I hereby take the moral high ground and look forward to the new stadium being built on a hill. Colin Glassar 26 Posted 24/01/2020 at 17:17:12 Eddie, we should build it between the two cathedrals. This way we'd have a Catholic, Protestant and a football cathedral to overlook the city. Pat Kelly 27 Posted 24/01/2020 at 17:38:23 I resemble that remark, Jer#17 Kieran Kinsella 28 Posted 24/01/2020 at 17:39:06 Paul Jones @14,I honestly thought they banned wooden stands after the Bradford City fire. I guess you can add all kinds of fire retardant chemicals to wood but that defeats the “green†motivation. As for the sea levels, some time back, Meis claimed it would be “global warming proof.†Not sure if that entails a Berlin Wall like barrier or just a supply of buckets and sandbags. Mike Gaynes 29 Posted 24/01/2020 at 17:48:44 Pat and Paul, you guys related?Or is there simply a dominant sardonic gene in the Kelly clan? Nicholas Ryan 30 Posted 24/01/2020 at 18:04:28 Colin [26] I'm afraid, that placing an enormous erection between two cathedrals wouldn't be very seemly! Martin Nicholls 31 Posted 24/01/2020 at 18:10:39 The world and its wife have and are scrambling to build hotels, housing etc on the docks yet some on TW seem to think that we in isolation should be the ones to be concerned about rising sea levels?!If Meis's plan to use salvaged plastics doesn't add to the cost, then I'm all for it. Brent Stephens 33 Posted 24/01/2020 at 18:18:20 Colin #26 "we should build it between the two cathedrals. This way we'd have a Catholic, Protestant and a football cathedral to overlook the city".Would there be a bell end? Denny Kerr 34 Posted 24/01/2020 at 18:18:33 It wasn't too many years ago that so called experts were predicting that we were going to be entering another ice age. So I wouldn't base our ground location on the views of these people, many of which have a political agenda. As for salvaging plastics for the new seats, I wish they'd concentrate on salvaging the rest of the season Colin Glassar 35 Posted 24/01/2020 at 18:33:52 Lads, we'd have the biggest spire in the village. Paul Kelly 36 Posted 24/01/2020 at 18:40:00 Bragging or complaining Colin? Paul Kelly 37 Posted 24/01/2020 at 18:41:24 Mike - "Or is there simply a dominant sardonic gene in the Kelly clan?" Yep, you've nailed it!!!!!!!!! Paul Kelly 38 Posted 24/01/2020 at 18:53:33 Brent - " would there be a bell end"? I'm here all week!!!!!!!!!!! Colin Glassar 39 Posted 24/01/2020 at 18:56:38 Brent, that would be the original name of the kop. Paul Kelly 40 Posted 24/01/2020 at 19:11:43 Things learned on this thread and in no particular order; seats are made of plastic, Dan meis knows about recycled plastic, Dan Meis informs a load of scousers about the Pacific garbage patch, Dan Meis informs me that he's going to build a knew continent in the shape of Atlantis from recycled tesco carrier bags and its centre piece will be called Dan Meis stadium, (where we'll play our games at weekends, carrier bags permitting). After a long boat journey to our home ground you'll be impressed by the 200ft statue of Bill straddling the entrance like the Coloss' s of Rhodes and when you look up and pass underneath it piss' s on you from a great height whilst a minicom on the boat shouts "destination Kirkby, it's ring fenced, what a manager" on a continuous loop. The sky's the limit!!!! Kevin Latham 41 Posted 24/01/2020 at 19:31:22 I wonder if Kenwright's seat will be ring fenced? Just going off topic a bit, I really hope that the new ground has a lot of identity with The city of Liverpool. It really pisses me off the way the rs try to hijack everything to do with the city as if - as they believe- nobody else matters. I'm sure someone will put me straight if I've got this wrong, but didn't we have the Liver Bird on some very early shirts? Maybe I'm dreaming with that one, but as the senior club in the city I really think that we should make that connection a bit more. Apart from Mordor which we gave them, the only other place that their supporters know in the city is Speke Airport. Phil Martin 42 Posted 24/01/2020 at 20:05:31 Are 60,000 recycled seats better than (the original) unambitious planned 52000 seats? Len Hawkins 43 Posted 24/01/2020 at 20:11:52 Perhaps he could also use the tin from the £30m can deal. Alex Kociuba 44 Posted 24/01/2020 at 21:32:14 It's a bit sad of me but I looked into rising sea levels a few months ago in relation to the stadium and was going to post the findings but they were actually an uninteresting conclusion. The bottom line was something to the effect of about 1-6 inches in the next 50 years or so near the stadium depending on the severity and model you use.I think the majority of the Wirral and the entirety of Southport were submerged before it affects the docks area by more than a few inches. Phil (Kelsall) Roberts 45 Posted 24/01/2020 at 21:43:16 You can always build a bund.I was surprised that no reference to recycled old players (usually from United) so we are used to it. Mike Connolly 46 Posted 24/01/2020 at 22:11:43 Rising water levels. There's only one striker who could deal with that. re- sign big Bob Latchford. We know he walks on water Derek Knox 47 Posted 24/01/2020 at 23:21:12 We've got a plastic Chairman, can he be recycled? And turned into something useful! Jamie Crowley 48 Posted 25/01/2020 at 01:50:59 Frank Key @20 -See ya later alligator. After a while crocodile. See ya soon ya big baboon! We're coming! Leave town while you can. David Currie 49 Posted 25/01/2020 at 02:51:58 Mike 46,One goal at a time Bob Latchford, that's all we are asking of you. If you hit the bar we'll all say aah one goal at a time. Tony Abrahams 50 Posted 25/01/2020 at 17:03:28 What about those frozen iguana's, Jamie! Rob Halligan 51 Posted 25/01/2020 at 17:18:09 Kevin # 41. When Everton won the league championship at Anfield, the club had medals struck, and awarded to the players which had the Liver bird on it. Of course, as we all know, the RS didn't even exist then, so by rights, the Liver bird belongs to us.https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/remembering-evertons-first-league-champions-11029550 Brian Williams 52 Posted 25/01/2020 at 17:50:42 I think the majority of the Wirral and the entirety of Southport were submerged before it affects the docks area by more than a few inches.I don't that logic works does it?Is the majority of the Wirral at the same height, or lower, above sea level than the docks?https://www.wirralglobe.co.uk/news/18028702.areas-wirral-likely-flood-2050/ Colin Glassar 53 Posted 25/01/2020 at 18:19:59 Derek, could he be turned into a floating water barrier? Tony Abrahams 54 Posted 25/01/2020 at 18:22:15 A float would do Colin, after all he kept Everton afloat for years! Paul Birmingham 55 Posted 25/01/2020 at 18:42:30 I reckon these days that every business and new building built by any company by following the carbon code, will thereby tick the government boxes for renewable and sustainable energy and thus reduce the carbon foot print, and will save some monies in taxation duties by being green, carbon efficient and compliant.EFC will have taken to this and fair play to reduce costs for the build and recycling materials makes good common sense. The facts about global warming are a real issue, but also this side of the river gets dredged regularly, to allow the ships in to port, may be a positive but you'd like to think that EFC and all the consultants employed have done their home work.Working with colleagues on the HS2, project and the spiralling costs, it's seeing, in typical EFC, style, also I'd not be surprised if this great stadium design cost unless it's started soon will spiral. It's the catalyst for the future of the club but the building of a top class squad to complement a top class stadium must be paramount. In view of the resurgence of the RS, this next 5 years are huge for the future of EFC.Let's hope this year the first dig starts, and builds hope on the horizon. It would be a great day to see this happen and light up the sky around the city with EFC holograms etc.One day soon. Brian Williams 56 Posted 25/01/2020 at 18:48:54 I just hope the seats, whatever they're made of, don't have a gap in the back. The sort of gap that allows the complete knob who sits behind me to kick fook out of my back all through every game! Kevin Latham 57 Posted 25/01/2020 at 19:25:10 Rob @51, thanks for that. I knew we had a Liver bird connection somewhere in days gone by. And you're right of course, it's ours by right! Funny how the other shower pick up what we had first. Didn't they also want to wear blue and white striped jerseys in their early days too, and go by the name of Everton Athletic or something similar. They've been singing ‘We shall not be moved' at some recent games as well - FFS! Peter Neilson 58 Posted 25/01/2020 at 19:55:20 The flooding article that the Echo ran with was pretty alarmist based on information provided by Climate Central and based on sea rises more than double those predicted by the IPCC. The IPCC predict 50cm- 1m by 2100 but none of the figures are certain and don't take account of potential reduced emissions. The maps of a flooded Merseyside took no account of sea defences. At least by 2100 we will have Schneiderlin off the books and hopefully we have a new generation of Blues seeing us win the intergalactic cup. Paul Birmingham 59 Posted 25/01/2020 at 20:00:07 Peter, a very good slant, on this theme. Paul Kelly 60 Posted 25/01/2020 at 20:01:05 There was a thread about the Liver Bird a while ago, without a fucking doubt, we should re-introduce onto our kits asap. It's a symbol of the city, not those cunts. Bring it on I say, the Norwegian's can get to fuck. Kevin Latham 61 Posted 25/01/2020 at 20:13:05 Peter @58. Sea rise by 2100? Bloody hell, we'd better get our arses into gear. It's ten past eight now!! Paul Kelly 62 Posted 25/01/2020 at 20:38:13 Kevin- quality response Derek Thomas 63 Posted 25/01/2020 at 21:11:53 If they take all the holes in our defence and mid field, incorporate them into the stadium, then all the water can flow under and through it.I give you... The USM St Domingo's Mount sur la Mersey. Rob Halligan 64 Posted 25/01/2020 at 21:52:03 Paul # 60. Spot on mate. As you say, the Liver bird is a symbol of the city of Liverpool, and so should feature somewhere on our strip. Both Manchester clubs have a ship on their club crest due to the Manchester Ship Canal. The Manchester Ship Canal, which opened in 1894, helped facilitate trade in the city of Manchester when it first opened. The canal therefore made the city of Manchester one of the leading ports in England. As a result the vast majority of the population of Manchester were dock workers. To pay respect to that heritage, both clubs, City and United, decided to put a ship on their club crest. So, in all fairness, the Liver bird, which, as Paul says, is a symbol of the city of Liverpool, and should feature on both clubs' crests. Paul Birmingham 65 Posted 25/01/2020 at 22:02:41 All spot on, about the Liver Bird, and now the Liver Building is an Everton asset, it would be interesting to see where this could go in the longer term. It's worth re-writing some local history bloggs and the club printing 1000s of Liverpool 19th century, history brochures, at John Lennon and Manchester airports, to tell the true history to the RS hordes that come over every other week. Eric Paul 66 Posted 25/01/2020 at 22:08:03 Let them have it, it's soiled goods, Prince Rupert's tower is our badge. Sean Kelly 67 Posted 26/01/2020 at 01:08:03 Recycled plastic seats to watch the recycled garbage on the pitch... Paul Kelly 68 Posted 26/01/2020 at 04:40:09 Eric, no doubt I want the tower to remain as part of our crest, I wouldn't want it any other way. But we could incorporate the bird onto our kit, on the sleeve, shorts or socks. It's a symbol of the city, not those fuckers. Martin Mason 69 Posted 26/01/2020 at 06:44:26 And the advantage of this, other than pointless Virtue Signalling, is? Every spare penny we have should go to improving the team. Sean Kelly 70 Posted 26/01/2020 at 09:05:02 In regard to rising tides, by the time this is built, we will all be gone to our maker. No-one will be shedding a tear over weepy Bill – and Richarlison's diving exploits will be put to good use providing he's still playing in his 90s. Brian Williams 71 Posted 26/01/2020 at 09:26:37 Sean #69.I bloody hope not mate. I was hoping to last beyond 2024! Jim Harrison 72 Posted 26/01/2020 at 11:35:21 I am pretty sure there will be a fair amount of consideration as to sea level change. The guys chucking money at this are not complete morons!!All for recycling plastic for the seats. Anyone who has an issue with it is pretty petty. And the amount of money we are talking about is fuck all compared to the cost of the playing staff! Len Hawkins 73 Posted 26/01/2020 at 12:02:07 Born and bred in Southport, I can confirm that Southport will not be under water – it will be an island according to the projected maps. I am at present looking into the possibility of a ferry to replace the supporters coaches from Southport to Bramley-Moore Dock – just need a few more rowers and someone to beat the drum. Brian Wilkinson 74 Posted 26/01/2020 at 12:56:09 Some good ones on here today, from still life if the Bullens wooden seats, to the sandbags and buckets for the rising tides... gave me a laugh anyway. However, no-one has yet come up with Bill King Canute, sat on the banks of the Mersey, turning the tide.Well, he has certainly turned the tide at Everton – sadly, in the wrong direction. Nicholas Ryan 75 Posted 26/01/2020 at 13:14:42 As to the Liver Bird, I did a long post on it, some years ago. The short version is: There are EU and UK trademarks. Where there is no owner of the UK mark, then the EU mark will apply in the UK. LFC have the EU, but NOT the UK trademark. LFC did not apply for the UK mark, so that the City of Liverpool could, if they wished, [they never have].The longest use of the Liver Bird, lies with Liverpool Cricket Club. LFC promised not to sue either the City or the Cricket Club, for infringement. LFC told the EU Patent Office, they would only enforce, against 'fake' kit suppliers in the Far East. So far, that is what they've done. The EU mark covers ALL representations of the Bird. A group of EFC fans did contest the granting of the EU mark. Ray Roche 76 Posted 26/01/2020 at 13:32:14 Brian @74,You're spelling “Canute†wrong. Probably predictive text. Kevin Prytherch 77 Posted 26/01/2020 at 13:38:24 On the liver bird issue. I think it would make us look petty and would make us look bitter to now start arguing about having it on our strips.I, for one, wouldn't want it. Eric Paul 78 Posted 26/01/2020 at 13:44:47 Ray,I suspect there's only 4 letters the way you would spell it. Joe McMahon 79 Posted 26/01/2020 at 13:49:32 Kevin @77, I'm fully with you. It's not crests, club badges or the content on them that wins Silverware, or in this day and age qualify for the Champions League. The most important thing for any future success of Everton FC is to move into a much better stadium, and that (hopefully) is going to happen after the Kings Dock failure. Kevin Latham 80 Posted 26/01/2020 at 13:55:55 I wasn't arguing solely about the Liver bird at post 41, although as has been said it's the city's emblem rather than the redshite's although they want to own it. I was just saying that I didn't think we make enough of the fact that we are a big part of the city too. And after all, we were founded well before the redshite. Maybe I'm just pissing in the wind but I get fed up the number of times I hear Liverpool (the city) mentioned and then the redshite in the next breath, no mention of us. By the way, Ray @ 76, the Canute spelling comment gave me a big laugh! Jonathan Tasker 81 Posted 27/01/2020 at 09:21:42 Do you think the architect is in on the joke? There's no new stadium. How many times do I have to say this? It's not going to happen. Brian Williams 82 Posted 27/01/2020 at 09:55:23 How many times do I have to say this?Enough times to get the attention you're after maybe? Brent Stephens 83 Posted 27/01/2020 at 09:56:11 Funny, I've never heard him say that before. What was it he said? James Flynn 84 Posted 27/01/2020 at 12:42:54 Moshiri is a partner owner of the Liver Building. It's not his outright.
