Delph suffers another injury setback

Friday, 21 January, 2022 46comments  |  Jump to most recent

Fabian Delph is facing another lengthy spell on the sidelines after sustaining what has been described as a serious hamstring injury.

The 32-year-old has battled to stay fit for much of his time at Goodison Park played just six times in the Premier League for the Toffees so far this season and hasn't featured since playing in the defeat at Crystal Palace on 12th December.

There are suggestions that this latest setback could be enough to sideline him until the end of the season when his contract with the club expires meaning he might have played his last game in an Everton jersey.

It will be interesting to see which club takes Delph on for next season - if any is brave / foolish enough!

Cue vitriol about stealing a living, lousy signing, all Brands fault.

It was probably slightly above 50/50 positive when he signed as midfield enforcer, Barry MkII, experienced compared to his know injury issues.

13 starts in his first season. 2 in the next and 3 this. Since 23/2/2020 - he has started 5 games 🤦‍♂️ He also made 12 appearances as a sub. Total minutes on the pitch = 1720 = 19 full games in 3 full seasons. And like an England Cricket opener - never troubled the scorers. £8,5m plus £12,5 in salary = £21m - almost £12000 per minute on the pitch.

Sadly the gamble didn't work. Could also be City getting payback for what they paid for Jack Rodwell.

What a disaster he has been. Bad attitude and crap physically- Phil stats above are mind boggling!

Feel sorry for him, a handy player on his day. I would rather see a fit Delph than Gomes anyday. But we do seem to get over our fair share of players with injury problems!

Best of luck to him if he manages to find a new club. Surely on a "pay if you play" contract!

As I predicted!

Scientists announce a new strain of Covid; Delph announces a new strain.

This has come as a huge surprise to me, totally shocked.

Won't see him in an Everton jersey again, thankfully... He will see out his £90k p/w contract, having played 19 games in 3 years.

One of the most expensive flops ever. I did say at the time, a huge mistake by Silva & Brands, considering he was injury-prone at Man City.

Phil

Thanks for saving me the research by beating me to the stat check I was about to do as soon as I saw this headline. What a disastrous mistake he has been.

I suspect he will go the way of Owen Hargreaves, Jack Wilshere, and Daniel Sturridge, and go into free agency, wanting to make top dollar before finding himself devoid of offers and being forced into retirement or low-paying tryouts for teams in Australia or Indonesia.

Just 2 decent halves in his entire Everton career, both this season. All that for £20M, and we lost both games!

Microcosm of Moshiri's era.

Nothing to see here.

I was going to say a modern day Bryan Robson, but at least "Airfix Man" – as we used to call him – would play with one leg if needed.

His injury history was a gamble; we needed a leader who could talk and organise…unfortunately, he wasn't that guy. It just never worked out.

I remember his home debut, running on shouting and all pumped up, then called the whole team shit, if I recall...

Jonny Big Bollocks in the end... one of many! No malice and thanks for the memories.

What a shock. There was a roughly 5-minute spell this season where he looked like he *might* be a handy veteran. Now he can just run out the clock on his contract and we can all pretend this signing never happened.

(Sadly for me, he'll forever be memorialized on my wall, since he was on the cover of the matchday programme for my first trip to Goodison in 2019.)

What an utter disgrace! £90k per week for a has-been with a sick note!!! How can Everton get it so wrong??

I hope we learn from this and never purchase somebody that is over the hill again. Literally, this guy has been laughing all the way to the bank!!!

A salary of £21M is just obscene for a guy who was only ever going to be a bit-part player at best. Mind-boggling!!!

A prime example of how Moshiri's investment was wasted. And you don't have to look far for more. The only contribution they've made is to the dire state the Club is in.

We took a chance on an injury-prone player, whom, had he not been injury-prone, we would never have been able to sign. It was a gamble and, in my view, a ludicrous gamble. However, it is not Delph's fault. He is lucky financially, cursed professionally.

Dave, Paul the Esk maybe able to enlighten us, I'd like to know too.

Here's an interesting article that talks about players' rights if they get injured and when clubs can cut pay.

How Long Do Injured Footballers Get Paid?

Peter Neilson
23 Posted 21/01/2022 at 20:22:15
Dave (18),

Yes, players are usually insured for wages while injured. However, insurance can be declined or have exemptions against it. That would depend on the medical and the player's history. Similar to pet insurance but bigger premiums.

Jeff Armstrong
24 Posted 21/01/2022 at 20:54:52
Insurance??? Absolutely not, the only insurance any club can get is if a player retires through injury. What insurance business anywhere would insure a player who might be injured one month to the next?

Ridiculous connotation,

Ooh... Richarlison's injured for this week, let's make a claim...

And what club would pay the premiums on each and every player's potential injury status?

Should not have gambled on what was a has-been when we signed him. He was fading badly at City. Why not get a young, hungry keen 22 year old desperate to play for the shirt. Iwobi failing at Arsenal, Schneiderlin failing at Utd, Ashley Williams. I could go on. Why buy aging fucking has-beens. STOP !!!! ffs

Mike, Besic only cost about 4m I think and we loaned him out for a lot of his time which I assumed saved some cash.

I think he's a good player and it's a real shame he hasn't been able to stay fit enough over a longer period of games. I don't see a bad attitude at all, just bad luck. Although of course that's balanced out with his million pound contract. It may be time for him to think about retirement if he can't get himself fit enough for a run of games. Talking of luck and you add Besic, Bolasie and Gbamin and then Everton have had none either.

Tony E,

interesting. Usually six months full pay at large companies/organizations for long-term illness. Pro' footballers even "Win" there too! But remember, it's a short career...

Phil (K) R,

12k per minute! For context, that is roughly a third of the (round the clock) per-minute profit rate of Amazon.

We got him cheap because of his injury record but given that record the wages offered were ludicrous and, of course, he's just one of the many expensive mistakes which have drained this club. Gbamin, Tosun, Bolasie, Walcott and probably a good few others I can't recall.

Mina is another and this season he may well end up playing more games for Columbia than for us!

We brought him in as a captain type figure to help the younger players and foreign players settle in as he had a good reputation at the time, but he has shown over the years that he is here purely To fleece the club for a retirement fund.

Never reached any decent level of play and regularly dragged the team into a slow playing style when he has been in the team.

He must go down in the top ten of biggest wastes of money in our history.

Do us all a favour and take a pay off to give a squad place to someone who really deserves it.

The end of his contract can't come too soon for me.

Delph is sadly right up in a long list of VERY poor EFC signings. What riles the most is his wages vs minutes played.

47 Posted 25/01/2022 at 11:47:58
Jeff (24) you can insure anything as long as it's legal and it's determinable as to what the loss would be and the causes of the loss. It's up-to the club to work out if the premium is worth paying but players can be insured against injury as long as the insurer will cover them. It's part of the medical and transfer completion. Quite a few companies specialise in sports insurance. I spoke with one of their agents a few years ago, it helped kill a few myths about paying players wages.

It usually kicks in for longer term injuries. As with any insurance the companies make their money by understanding and pooling the risk from individual payers and redistributing it across a larger portfolio in this case players and squads.

Players will have it written into their contract how long they remain on full pay when injured and the types of injury covered. Some players also take out their own income protection insurance.

Brands really got sold a pup with Delph. It also speaks volumes for Medical Services that assessed him. Delph and his agent really knew what they where doing. I could be wrong, but was he on bigger wages than when he was at Man City?
