Season › 2021-22 › News Everton U23s lose last group game in PL Cup at Burnley Michael Kenrick Friday, 11 February, 2022 34comments | Jump to most recent Burnley U23s 2 - 1 Everton U23s Everton Under-23s scored first but gave up goals at the end of each half of their last game in Group D of the Premier League Cup away against Burnley. Everton took the lead on the half-hour when Dobbin cut in from the left and slotted his right-footed effort past the Burnley 'keeper. But the home side responded just before the break, drawing level. And a second goal just before the end of the second half for the home side denied Everton any points from this one. Everton U23s: Crellin, Astley, Welch, John*, Anderson, Quirk, Onyango, Gbamin (Price), Hughes (Campbell), Cannon, Dobbin. Subs Not Used: Tyrer, Hagan, Kristensen. * No line-up information was provided by Everton FC for this game. A 10-man teamsheet, plus subs, was listed by other sources. We think the unlisted player was probably Kyle John. Reader Comments (34) Note: the following content is not moderated or vetted by the site owners at the time of submission. Disclaimer Michael Kenrick 1 Posted 11/02/2022 at 17:13:04 Technically, Everton are the current holders of the Premier League Cup as they are the last side to win the competition during the 2018-19 season. In the two seasons that followed, the Premier League Cup was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Not seeing any sign of live streaming for this one, despite the absence of any clash with the Premier League. Brent Stephens 2 Posted 11/02/2022 at 17:19:35 Only a Twitter feed apparently, Michael. Yawn. Brian Wilkinson 3 Posted 11/02/2022 at 17:48:51 Be interesting to see who is in the starting line up, hoping against hope Dobbin and Onyango are not in the squad, at least then gives me hope they will be in the squad tomorrow. With Warrington going out onloan, the two I've been keeping an eye on has been Whittaker and Stanley Mills, both look like they have something about them. Michael Kenrick 4 Posted 11/02/2022 at 19:15:52 We should at least have a team sheet by now... nothing at all on what Dave refers to as "another Everton fan site". Michael Kenrick 5 Posted 11/02/2022 at 19:24:14 And there's just so much total shite on Twatter... Maybe it's because I've never taken the time to figure it out. Perhaps there's an aubiobook out there just waiting for me:"Twatter for Dummies""How to make Friends on Twatter and become an Influencer" Michael Kenrick 6 Posted 11/02/2022 at 19:32:52 Still 0 - 0 at the half-hour mark, if you believe these betting sites. Burnley with 2 corners to Everton's 1. Michael Kenrick 7 Posted 11/02/2022 at 19:33:57 Oh, wait a minute... Everton take the lead through Lewis Dobbin on 30 mins!!! Brent Stephens 8 Posted 11/02/2022 at 19:37:10 "Everton's Lewis Dobbin cuts in from the left and slots his right-footed effort past Jensen 0-1"So Dobbin not on the first team bench tomoz. Michael Kenrick 9 Posted 11/02/2022 at 19:50:40 Half-time and Burnley have levelled it. Dave Abrahams 10 Posted 11/02/2022 at 20:00:20 I don't think Gbamin will be on the team sheet tomorrow he's playing tonight for the U23's at Burnley, Hughes hit the post in the 30 th minute. From another Everton website, should have gone to Spec Savers Michael!! Brent Stephens 11 Posted 11/02/2022 at 20:02:01 Dave, what's the "other website"? Michael Kenrick 12 Posted 11/02/2022 at 20:13:45 All I can find on Twatter... a photo of Gbamin ball-watching as a Burnley player zooms past him! Brent Stephens 13 Posted 11/02/2022 at 20:17:10 Onyango mentioned on Twitter as well, so he's not on tomorrow's bench either. Michael Kenrick 14 Posted 11/02/2022 at 20:17:15 In this new era of open and transparent communications and fan engagement following the all-encompassing strategic review of footballing matters... and "evertonfc.com will have a full report and reaction following the match" – which means no updates for us suckers! Michael Kenrick 15 Posted 11/02/2022 at 20:20:27 So we have Hughes, Dobbin, Gbamin and Onyango in the team so far... Brent Stephens 16 Posted 11/02/2022 at 20:20:48 Michael, I'm just wondering what the young lads feel, knowing that the club couldn't be arsed to give them the match-day profile they deserve - before and during the game. Kieran Kinsella 17 Posted 11/02/2022 at 20:28:14 Gbamin to his credit following the Niasse path and getting some minutes under his belt with the under 23s instead of taking the view he is too high and mighty for such things Phill Thompson 18 Posted 11/02/2022 at 20:39:17 Add Joe Anderson to the list of names playing Michael Kenrick 19 Posted 11/02/2022 at 20:41:26 Brent, I think we should have Tony and Gerald get together to author a semi-fictional work for us: "The life and hard times of being an overlooked Everton Academy starlet"Still 1-1 into the last 5 minutes... Phill Thompson 20 Posted 11/02/2022 at 20:43:06 Seb Jensen a schoolboy goalkeeper is apparently playing according to Twitter. He is very highly rated but that's a leap ahead of about four other goalkeepers! Tony Everan 21 Posted 11/02/2022 at 20:44:05 Yes Phill, sounds like he had a great chance to score according to the burnley Twitter feed.https://mobile.twitter.com/claretsacademy Michael Kenrick 22 Posted 11/02/2022 at 20:46:15 ButBurnley score at the death... bugger! Phill Thompson 23 Posted 11/02/2022 at 20:47:22 Tony, I take it you mean Anderson not Seb Jensen :-) Robert Tressell 24 Posted 11/02/2022 at 20:47:34 Good for Gbamin. Shows the right attitude at least Tony Everan 25 Posted 11/02/2022 at 20:48:11 Sorry Phill, Yes I meant Anderson, I'm not concentrating! Brent Stephens 26 Posted 11/02/2022 at 20:49:07 So our progression to the KO phases depends on other results?? Michael Kenrick 27 Posted 11/02/2022 at 20:50:44 That's it. Finishes 2-1 to the Clarets. Gary Jones 28 Posted 11/02/2022 at 20:50:47 The fact the u23's have no genuine LB either (or arguably one IF you count the CB conversion) shows you just how bad the club is from top to bottom……why are we letting a Man U loan and a Spurs freebie placate us? Lost tomorrow and the protests need to start up in earnest again….IF we're going down, go down with a fight. Michael Kenrick 29 Posted 11/02/2022 at 20:58:25 Still pretty wide open…Group D Table: P W D L F:A Pts1. Everton U23 6 3 0 3 8:9 92. Pt'boro' U23 4 2 1 1 8:5 73. Shefd U U23 5 2 1 2 8:10 74. Burnley U23 5 2 0 3 6:6 6 And we seem to have shot our load. Michael Kenrick Editorial Team 30 Posted 12/02/2022 at 11:36:12 Everton provide a report on the game but nothing else. No teamsheet. The report mentions more Burnley players than Everton players. Found a teamsheet of sorts at GrandOldTeam (added to the story up top)... but it's a player short! There is a video of the Dobbin goal floating around but the quality sucks. They zoom in at the end and I can see Dobbin, Cannon and the big No 7 must be Onyango... or is it Okoronkwo? Any others? Brent Stephens 31 Posted 12/02/2022 at 12:02:33 Michael, Okoronkwo played Wed (U18s) so unlikely playing last night? Ajay Gopal 32 Posted 12/02/2022 at 12:38:45 How did Gbamin play? Brent, Phil, any of you see the game? It would give me some hope if there was at least some positive from the game - Gbamin, Onyango, Dobbin or anybody else, please. Brent Stephens 33 Posted 12/02/2022 at 12:43:29 Hi Ajay. Sorry but there was no live stream of the game so I was in the dark on most things (as usual, I hear some say) apart from a few comments I saw on Twitter. Michael Kenrick 34 Posted 29/03/2022 at 10:06:35 A bit frustrating if you're a statto freak who wants to keep track of the U23 players. The club never did publish the line-up for this game. So I decided to ask them who played. And back came the reply:"Unfortunately, we do not have a teamsheet for the fixture."Astounding to me. Just mind-boggling that a professional Category A Development club under the much-heralded Elite Player Performance Plan would actually not know who played in one of their competitive games! The 10-man line-up from GrandOldTeam was corroborated at Youthhawk and listed up top, but no idea who the missing player was. I think it should have been Kyle John, might have been Stan Mills. Mackenzie Hunt much less likely as I think he was out injured… but could of course be any other name in the U23s or even the upcoming U18s. ps: Subsequent results in Group D meant Everton slipped to 3rd place and failed to qualify for the knock-out stages of the U23 Premier League Cup this season, meekly surrendering their tenuous hold on the trophy from 3 years ago!
