Season › 2021-22 › News The Rumour Mill Everton drop interest in Winks Lyndon Lloyd | Friday, 22 November 2024 26comments | Jump to last Everton will reportedly make no further attempt to sign Harry Winks from Tottenham Hotspur. The midfielder had emerged as a potential target of the Blues earlier this month as Frank Lampard seeks to bolster his midfield but talks with Spurs have reportedly stalled. Everton are said to have preferred a season-long loan as opposed to a £20m permanent deal and negotiations over the midfielder were likely not helped by an apparent falling out between Bill Kenwright and Daniel Levy over the latter's initial low-ball offer for Richarlison. Meanwhile, Mark Douglas of i claims that Lampard has, in any case, decided to move on to other targets after doing "full due diligence" on the player and deciding he is not what he needs after all. Disclaimer Chris Locke 1 Posted 30/06/2022 at 19:36:52 Due diligence? That can't have taken long. Just watch any of his performances for Spurs over the last 3 years. If this is true, then it's great news, imo. Tony Everan 2 Posted 30/06/2022 at 20:00:08 It's very good news because the majority on here thought he wasn't the right player for our crucial defensive midfield position. I'm being speculative but I wonder if Kevin Thelwell has convinced Frank that there are better options available that we can target? He will have two or three live contenders. Looking forward now to see who we are linked with. Any guesses? Mike Gaynes 3 Posted 30/06/2022 at 20:05:21 Yay. Gavin Johnson 4 Posted 30/06/2022 at 20:09:16 Seen a report that Lampard will make every effort to sign Eriksen on a free. Anyone's thoughts on whether he could sit deep and do the pivot role in front of the defence? I'd see him as someone who could dictate the tempo of play and play balls through the lines and the likes of Doucoure and Alli to the running. Dale Self 5 Posted 30/06/2022 at 20:14:10 Yessss, I'll give a nod to that. Swerved. I can't help but think this improves the chance of getting Zinchenko. Brian Williams 7 Posted 30/06/2022 at 20:20:08 Hmmmmm, is this the same Winks that we were never truly in for?I wish I'd become a sports journalist. Neil Tyrrell 8 Posted 30/06/2022 at 20:21:30 Cue the good news trickling out to offset the pain of losing Richarlison. New stadium site video tomorrow! I wasn't thrilled by the possibility of Winks so this is a decent start, please keep the good news coming... Will Mabon 9 Posted 30/06/2022 at 20:42:42 Brian, there are no journalists, only reporters and storytellers. Thought this was funny from above:"...an apparent falling out between Bill Kenwright and Daniel Levy over the latter's initial low-ball offer for Richarlison."After who knows how many times, has Kenwright finally felt one being shoved into him? Guess Levy paid for the meal. Robert Tressell 10 Posted 30/06/2022 at 21:20:40 Good news. Hopefully we stop looking at overpriced, underwhelming names from the Premier League. Bernie Quinn 11 Posted 30/06/2022 at 21:52:44 Robert - It is very good news. I just hope Everton wash their hands of Spurs and never deal with them again. Not too concerned over other Premier League clubs. Pat Kelly 13 Posted 30/06/2022 at 21:59:47 Gutted. But I'll get over it. This raises some interesting questions. Of course it's only newspaper talk... But We can't afford to pay £20M for a player Lampard reportedly was very keen to get. Now Lampard reportedly didn't like him after all. Frank and Kenwright save face. Frank would have taken him on loan.If we can't spend £20M on the manager's choice, what chance have we of getting Zinchenko, if not on loan which seems remote. But not to worry, we still have Alli haven't we. What chance getting someone for free to replace Richarlison's goals? But not to worry, we still have Rondon, haven't we. The rebuild continues. Jerome Shields 14 Posted 30/06/2022 at 22:17:23 Sort away glad we did not get Wicks, we need a Midfielder with a engine Lester Yip 15 Posted 01/07/2022 at 00:29:43 Relief! If Chelsea bought a few ManC player, then we might have a chance to buy/borrow Loftus Cheek, Barkley or some youngsters. Karl Masters 16 Posted 01/07/2022 at 00:30:00 You can guarantee that Winks will play a blinder against us next season, probably combining with Richarlison for the winning goal…. Dupont Koo 17 Posted 01/07/2022 at 02:57:36 Good news regardless. No workrate, No pace & strength, adequate passing range only. Some argued that Winks is a poor man's Pirlo, but what we need now is more a Gana 2.0 given the fragility of our CBs (Jury's still out on Tarkowski). Gary Jones 18 Posted 01/07/2022 at 07:37:01 We need a new “Barry and McCarthy†in the middle. Winks fits neither profile. If we needed someone who could be neat on the ball, but offers NOTHING offensively OR defensively, then we can just put Gomes back on the pitch. My dream would be both Eriksen and Zinchenko, or Gallagher and Sangare. Suspect both are “pipe†though. Stu Darlington 19 Posted 01/07/2022 at 08:44:28 Pat @11You are a cynical sod,but I like you! Charles Brewer 20 Posted 01/07/2022 at 10:12:02 God this club is hopeless. The proper course of action was:29 June 2022: (Unwillingly) Agree to sell Richarlison to Spurs 30 June 2022: Agree sale at £90 million and agree (separate) purchase for £40 million for Winks30 June 2022: Get (pre-instructed) solicitor to phone to say that he's lost the Winks contract (any conveyancing solicitor will be able to do this, they have lots of practice) but it will be over in the morning.30 June 2022: Sign Richarlison sale, get money in the bank1 July 2022: Set fire to Winks contract. Bill Gienapp 21 Posted 01/07/2022 at 10:18:22 Lampard could have just said that from the get-go and saved us about 500 posts on the subject. Brian Harrison 22 Posted 01/07/2022 at 10:30:37 Bill #19,I don't think Lampard should be asked to give a running commentary on all the transfer speculation. The only people suggesting he was keen on Winks were the press, Lampard has never said a word about Winks. Matthew Williams 23 Posted 01/07/2022 at 11:37:29 Go for Harrison at Leeds and Lawrence at Derby instead...we need a new look creative midfield at long last! Niall McIlhone 24 Posted 01/07/2022 at 12:18:25 DuPont #15. It's not Gana 2.0 we need. It's the actual player we sold to PSG, and he is available. Mike Corcoran 25 Posted 01/07/2022 at 13:03:04 Lester Yip, we'd probably put a bid in for Loftus-Cheek and end up buying Loftus Road by mistake and then have to move in there – Everton that! Paul Jones 26 Posted 01/07/2022 at 17:20:57 Dodged an expensive bullet on Winks... now I hope we do the same with Zinchenko who, when he plays for Man City, looks very ordinary and no better than an academy player getting some first-team experience. Ashley Roberts 27 Posted 01/07/2022 at 18:30:12 I have to say I would sooner we take Lingard on a free than Winks for £20M. I just don't see how Winks, who cannot even make the first team, is worth that amount of money. At £10M, it might be worth a punt as a back-up player. I am hoping Frank can perform some miracles and bring Gallagher or Loftus-Cheek to Goodison. Failing Gallagher the next best option for me would be Ericksen. We need a creative midfielder and Lingard would be my third choice based on skill and age. Dennis from Watford is also worth a punt. That would mean Rondon would be surplus to requirements in more ways than one. C'mon, Frank get some signings over the line to give us some room for optimism for next season. Soren Moyer 28 Posted 02/07/2022 at 13:38:14 Forget about other Premier League teams cast-offs and rejects. There are plenty of players like Bissouma, Gana, Troussard and Neto out there. All it takes is an effort from our scouts to do their job for once!!As for our deadwood, Rondon has said that he wants to stay and fight for his place! Gomes is on £120k a week so no takers and he will stay too. Not sure about Keane, Holgate and Davies though.
