Iwobi injury less severe than first thought

Alex Iwobi will be sidelined for only three weeks after scans on the ankle he injured in Friday's cup defeat to Manchester United revealed he suffered lateral ligament damage.

The Nigerian international was stretchered off less than five minutes into the second half at Old Trafford amid fears he would be facing an extended spell out of the side.

Video replays showed his foot roll awkwardly and painfully under the force of a covering challenge by Tyrell Malacia as he tried to lead a breakaway for the Blues who were level in tie at the tie.

However, an examination of the ankle by Everton's medical staff at Finch Farm showed no fracture or extensive damage to the ligaments or structure of the joint.

As Everton's leading chance creator and one of the side's most industrious players, Iwobi will be a huge loss to Frank Lampard but the hope is that he will be absent for just the upcoming Premier League fixtures against Southampton and West Ham before being available for the home clash with leaders Arsenal on 4th Feburary.

Not sure if this is good news or bad news, he has certainly been one of our more industrious players, but usually with little end product, and recently seems to have gotten worse.

We will obviously have to improvise, but who with? Pity James Garner is out too, I do like that lad, and hope he can be an integral part in the future.

At the risk of Darren's wrath, I sincerely hope it is not Bette Davies, the no-action skateboarder.

Socks round ankles looking like 'Roy of the Rovers' but playing like Ena Sharples from the Rovers Return! Or was it Minnie Caldwell, that Alice Band has me confused? :-)

I didn't think it was that serious after seeing the replay, but Iwobi was running at full pelt when he got tackled, and the jar to his ankle must have made created enough pain to make him feel physically sick.

I'm not his biggest fan but I'm glad he's going to only be out for a few weeks because it's a squad game nowadays which I believe makes every single player in our squad important.

Unlike the Derek above, I rate Tom Davies as a Alan Harper type squad player.

Good news about Iwobi, who I also rate, Derek. Those two players, Davies and Iwobi, look to play a forward ball, although not always finding their target. That has more to do with there being no target to find in front of them most times.

Although the upturn in form of Gray and the return of Calvert-Lewin may change that. (Apoligies if I sound slightly positive on ToffeeWeb, I have noted that only Danny O'Neill is allowed that privilege. Thank you, Danny.)

Good news also that Roberto Martinez is to be offered the Portugal job and we can try to bring a bit of stability to our coaching staff for once.

You have definitely been touched by the ‘new Everton’, Derek, if you believe your post is being positive!

Word for word in agreement, Derek. I wish no ill on Iwobi but recently he's fallen back to his pre-decentish shitty form. He can't, or won't, tackle. His passing is poor. He has little to no end product, and is generally a passenger on the field.

He does bounce around like Tigger but he's a poor player who helped us towards the end of last season and started ok this season but his true self has come to the fore once more.

As for Davies, the less said the better.

I noted that being fully positive brought the wrath of Michael K amongst others.

With Iwobi, the tears he shed when being taken off the field had me confused. I thought it was the end of him.

Different eras I suppose, I'm glad it's just a sprained ankle.

"An Alan Harper type squad player"

This is testing my memory but Harper was a utility sub player, kind of implying jack of all positions, master of none.

Tom Davies does not or cannot play in a number of positions and is certainly not a master of any of the midfield roles.

Needs to take some of them Kalms day tablets. Gana Gueye is the one roaming, retrieving the ball.

Relax Alex, relax.

"The least said about Davies the better". Easier said than done, eh, Col.

I thought this thread was about Iwobi? Still he is the second-most-mentioned player so far...

"Bette" Davies...Ena Sharples and Minnie Caldwell. The side splitters just keep flowing. TW's very own Tony Blackburn's on fire.

Back on topic. I thought we may have seen the last of Iwobi this season so I am really pleased to see he won't be out as long as we thought. He's struggled recently, but his energy will be crucial to us on the run-in.

If it’s only three weeks, then he should only miss the next two games, as the third week is the next round of the FA Cup.

Glad he's not seriously injured, we'll see how we get on without him over the next few weeks.

The last few games, he seemed to be the Iwobi of old, running around doing absolutely nothing; he never puts his foot in and challenges for the ball.

Tony Everan
13 Posted 08/01/2023 at 15:18:41
Iwobi has contributed more assist-wise than any other player in the team so far this season. He has provided five assists in the league, the next highest is a few players who have provided a paltry one assist in our 18 league games.

I'm glad he's only out for a few weeks, because based on that where are the goal assists going to come from now?

Despite that we have to think long and hard about giving him a massive new long term contract. He's more of a player that I'd be happy to play against than want on my team.

Derek – well said about Iwobi and Davies. They do look to go forward and it doesn't always work out, often because of the complete lack of movement by their team mates.

I watched Tom closely against Brighton. He often showed for the ball from the defender and would turn forwards but more often than not he'd have to go backwards because everyone else was stood like statues.

Rob Halligan
16 Posted 08/01/2023 at 15:27:29
Tony, did I read that the club were thinking of a 5-year
contract extension? Absolutely obscene if true.

He's still got 18 months on his current contract, and seeing as he will be 27 years old in May, I think his contract should be only extended until he's 30, so a 2-year extension.

The other worry is that he could be offered £100k per week. Again absolutely obscene if true.

Jim Bennings
17 Posted 08/01/2023 at 15:36:10
I can't work out why people think Iwobi being out is going to help.

Yes, he's not exactly the best midfielder on earth, he's not really ever going to be the answer to what we need. But he's better than most of our midfielders and that's about as simple as it gets.

Calls for Tom Davies, who has scored about 5 league goals in 6 years, are pure insanity, do we not remember Davies playing at Bournemouth in November?

We ain't getting goals from Onana or Gana while James Garner – the jury is out on him, he's not even fit yet.

We need to buy players but we certainly don't need Iwobi missing for too long either.

Joe McMahon
18 Posted 08/01/2023 at 15:46:08
Jim, Iwobi is also one of the few that will run forward. If we do get relegated Tom Davies is not going to shine in the Championship either.

Apologies Darren, as I know you are a fan.

Rob, “According to reports, the midfielder is set to see his weekly wage increase from £70,000-a-week to £100,000-a-week in the new deal”.

They are saying it is a three and half year £17m contract taking him to June 2026.

As this is not a Tom Davies thread I will refrain from mentioning Tom Davies again, Darren.
This could be (Iwobi injury) a great chance for Doucoure to redeem himself. Duke is a great player once he gets into his stride but he needs a few games for that to happen - and he needs to avoid injuries as he’s quite injury prone.
Kim Vivian
21 Posted 08/01/2023 at 15:52:24
Iwobi's assists - 5 or 6 or whatever it is - take on more significance when you remember we have only scored 14 goals in the league. So he's assisted at least a third of them

He will be missed.

Tony Hill

I was supporting Iwobi on here when most were calling him the worst ever Everton buy. I'm entitled, therefore, to say that I think he's been awful for a while. He should be played centrally as a type of 10 where he can be very effective but he certainly should not be given a long and expensive contract - that's exactly where we've gone wrong historically.

If he chooses to go then we will get decent money and find someone else.

Think Iowbi needed a rest anyway.Him and Seamus appear to be mates. So you can be sure he will put the work in and come back fitter and motivated.

His new contract will be a Horlicks ,because of who is handling it and the existing contract he is on.Hopefully the outcome won't gonk himself as much as Gordon ,appears.to have experienced during his new contract negotiations.

I bet that Mina is on the new Player leadership group and Iowbi and Gordon aren't.

Dazza, before that penny hits you on the back of the head, I may be able to elucidate why the aforementioned, and in your eyes much maligned player, often appears in seemingly unrelated threads.

Two Word answer : Wage Thief ! Although admittedly, he is not the only one. I think supporters have every right to criticise players if it merits.

Analogy, if you went to the Empire, or any Theatre for that matter, to see a specific Play, and paid decent money for a Seat. The Actors were absolutely garbage and kept getting their lines wrong etc. Would you just accept it, and say nothing ?

It’s just that he-who-shall-not-be-named epitomises the sorry state of our academy, low standards and acceptance of mediocrity. It’s not his fault. He’s a bang average player who should be playing at his level.

Iwobi is another one. He’d probably be a standout player in the championship. He’s just not premier league standard.

Alex Iwobi is ( as they would say in years past) a charlatan. He runs about a lot but he never ever puts a meaningful tackle in.
Tony Everan
39 Posted 08/01/2023 at 21:06:15
Bobby, It’s an important point. I watch Man City without the ball, they are like demons trying to press and get it back. There’s much less closing down the space and letting the opponents dictate. It’s getting close to the man fast to put physical pressure on him to pass the ball in a panic or face the incoming tackle.

That type of pressing should be base level for a club of Everton’s standing, and it’s what’s needed to compete in the modern game. Whoever comes in has to implement that rigorously and buy midfielders who can both play good football and have that mobile fitness and physical ability to press this way.

Tony Abrahams
40 Posted 08/01/2023 at 21:34:28
You come across as someone who knows his football Tony, so the question is, how can Everton’s midfield and one forward player, have confidence in pressing high, with our defenders, sitting so deep?

The way we played at City and United, at least gets everyone closer together, and seems to have everyone understanding and having more confidence in the system, but for the likes of Brighton, it was really easy and enjoyable training ground practice.

Tony Everan
41 Posted 08/01/2023 at 22:21:12
Tony, I get an education from you and others on here, there’s always insightful comments to have a good think about. There is a recurring theme about having having the player with some pace who can read the game in the back two. Maybe still a huge position to fill in our team.

It’s a bit sad that I still think the best defence we have recently had is around four years ago when Zouma and Keane teamed up. For that short period we were a better all round team. Neither top quality but Zouma had pace and strength, Keane had resilience and both aerial ability. There’re was a complementary thing going on. Keane has struggled in every pairing since.

Currently I still think Yerry Mina is the best CB at the club, he has composure and reads the game better than most of the others. The team always looks better when he plays and I think the stats back that up too. An average speed CB who can read the game can also allow teams to play a higher line. The intelligence can give the all important yard start. Shame Yerry can’t go for a pee without getting a twinge halfway up the stairs.

I think a lot of us are realistically hopeful that Branthwaite is going to be a really big player for Everton. It’s important to us he gets the game time promised at PSV.
There will come a time soon when it will be either or for Tarkowski or Coady not both of them together.

David Cooper
42 Posted 08/01/2023 at 22:32:33
The difference between our inability to win the ball high compared to City is all down to the type of players we have and City have. I would say that City’s players who implement a very successful high press is because they move and think fast. They have speed to close defenders down and pressurize them into turning the ball over. We don’t have that physical ability amongst our players who have been playing recently. Possibly DCL and Gordon do have that speed to do this but they can’t do it from the treatment room! Gana of 4 years ago was able to steal the ball all over the field but on he seems to have lost that.

I am a long time supporter of Tom Davies - in my eyes he has rarely let the club down. I had hoped that he would be as effective as Osman was for Everton. A solid, dependable player who would show to the rest of his team mates what playing for Everton MES th. Whereas Leon had the advantage of mainly playing under 1 manager - Moyes, who trusted him and knew his strengths and weaknesses, Tom has been kicked around different roles by the 7-8 managers in the Moshiri-era. The Scottish league may afford him a stable environment but that is also not a given. Hope he finds his motivation and has a good career ahead.

In the meantime, the Everton midfield gets weaker and weaker (Garner, Iwobi, Davies) and no replacements in sight. And no, Dele Alli is not the answer. God help this club!

Tony everan. Well obvious point to make but maybe not to frank and his coaches but whatever formation he gets right or wrong we have to press as a team and fight like demons as you put it. By the way I’m really surprised and disappointed our coaches haven’t stepped up and at least improved the team individually.,All this might not be enough to save us but it’s all I can come up with failing some inspirational signings.

During 2022, Iwobi and Pickford have been the best players in the squad.

He is also one of the only players in the squad who can pass the ball, he is energetic and connects the forward play. I am really relieved that he will only miss 2 league games.

Sam Hoare
48 Posted 09/01/2023 at 09:52:44
Colin, I find it crazy that you are already back on your Iwobi bashing wagon (with others)

You do realise that he has as many assists as ALL THE OTHER PLAYERS IN OUR SQUAD PUT TOGETHER?! And that’s without him taking any free kicks or corners.

Those who say he’s had no end product this season are clearly desperate to not see what is right under their nose. He is also us right up there for tackles too. And he’s always near the top of ground covered too!

He’s not been his best for the last few matches (not sure why Lampard moved him to RCM when he’s better at LCM) but he’s literally our only player creating chances regularly from open play. Plus he works hard. And yet his own fans are happy to suggest it’s good that he’s injured?!

Astonishing how quickly fans will turn on their own players. Astonishing and depressing.

I've read a lot of negative comments on Tom Davies over the last few weeks and I fail to see the point people are making about him and Evertons current predicament.

It's impossible to blame any single player, let alone our own Everton youth product for the almighty mess we are in. Relevently speaking he cost us zero, is on cheap wages, has been unlucky with injuries but gives his all every single game.

Is he the greatest, is he world class or even one of the Premier leagues best players, no. But I'd rather Tom over the many other impostors we have spent a fortune on over the last decade.

We need better players in every position to compete at the top. That's not going to happen anytime soon. In the meantime we need everyone to improve and be the best they can be week in, week out.

My comment's on Tom are the same for Iwobi only he cost a lot of money and is on a hefty wage. But at least he gives his all. Iwobi hasn't improved as a player, but his attitude, fitness and work rate have which make him a big loss as he's more athletic, stronger, pacey and technically better than most of our other midfielders.

I'm not blaming Iwobi but his recruitment points to the problems of the past. Only time will tell if our recruitment has improved.

Danny O’Neill

Interesting comments on Iwobi.

I think he has been much improved these past 12 months and starting to be played in his best position.

He might not be one to fly into a full-blooded tackle, but he's good at nicking a ball.

An unpredictable player, which I personally like in a footballer.

Real shame for Iwobi as he seems a nice guy who tries his best when played. Hope he gets better soon. I just hope Lampard has some balls and tries someone different in his place while he's out. The usual suspects are not the answer as they have proved time and again.

Doucoure for example showed just why he shouldn't be playing for us when he came on against Utd. Yes, he's athletic, a big unit and can run - but that's about it. He can't pass, his decision-making is terrible, he gives fouls away, his heading isn't great, his tracking back and concentration are poor, and he gets caught out of position too often.

C'mon Lampard, try something different and let's really see what someone else like Price can do instead.

Dave Abrahams
53 Posted 12/01/2023 at 14:49:48
Paul (52),

I think one of the key players who helped Lampard and the team last season was Delph – when he played, of course. We could do with a player of his experience now to keep the rest of the team focused and keeping their positions.

When he played last season in the run-in games, he was invaluable to the team's game. A player like him would certainly help Everton's cause now because, as we all know, as well as a goalscorer, the central midfield is sorely lacking in every game.

Surely we are seeking players in both positions… while time drifts away and other teams are getting players in and changing their managers. The way this club operates is really unbelievable.
