Dyche wants to build winning mentality at Everton

Sean Dyche says that he has been impressing on his players the need to adopt a relentless drive to win as he tries to steer Everton out of the bottom three.

The former Burnley boss has overseen six games since succeeding Frank Lampard as the Toffees’ manager and picked up seven points from 18 but the club remains in the relegation zone with 12 games remaining, the next of which is at home to Brentford this afternoon.

Dyche has been trying to find goals in a squad that has been struggling in that regard without Dominic Calvert-Lewin and has started to see progress with the team getting the ball and numbers into the opposition box more frequently than was the case during the last few weeks of his predecessor’s tenure.

He has spoken of the need for his players to be more clinical and decisive in front of goal and his latest comments suggest that he is focused on developing a united and driven mentality in the dressing room to help pick up the points Everton will need in the coming weeks.

“That's the big thing for me — the mentality,” said Dyche who famously told his Burnley players last season that the opposition Blues had forgotten how to win during a match at Turf Moor. “Finding that mentality as a group of people, all noses pointing in the right direction, all willing to put everything we can into winning games. That is the starting point.

“Then that starts building, but it has got to start somewhere. That is what we are looking to do now, start that mentality. And, of course, you have got to understand all of the tactical and the technical stuff is a given.

“But the mentality, the underbelly, the mentality that says we will stop at nothing to be relentless to go and win games.

“That is a good mentality to have. It's led by me and the staff but we want buy-in from the players.”

That's half the battle. Everton have shown – when they are all switched on and attack the opposition – they have played some good football.

Surely that should be a given for all players to have that drive and desire to win, no??

Good luck with that, Sean!

As Nigel@2 rightly points out, it should be a given.

I know I'm going to sound like a grumpy old man but, because of the money these young men earn for the hours also, it's a very privileged lifestyle with flash cars, aesthetic women and very nice houses. The least they could do is try to win something!

Joe,

How do you motivate young multi-millionaires who have no connection to the club other than a pay packet?

Dyche has his work cut out just trying to get some of them to pass forward.

Each one of the players will be single-minded and resilient about themselves but how many of them would dig in for their team mates and show a winning mentality?

We are at least attacking teams even if it is with a blunt spoon. Have we got the character to come back from a goal down or go for a second goal after taking the lead. I am not so sure we have but neither have the teams around us.

Dyche is going to need a new squad to build a winning mentality. This lot are losers.

Sadly, Dyche inherited a squad of average players on massive wages. No money to spend in the last days of the window, mainly thanks to Ronald Koeman.

So Iwobi on the bench

It better to have that mentality in the dressing room. There have been reports that it has not always been like that.

Apathetic performances we have always experienced. We get reports from Fan's present of the attitude of some players on the bench. In the pass we have had Managers worked out by players not pulling their weight and not interested.

Yes it is better to have a winning attitude and make it central to everything, so as to keep the competing attitudes at bay.

I like Dyche and I think he'll be the man, eventually, to dig us out of the brown stuff.
Personally I wouldn't be heartbroken if none of the present squad graced Goodison again. If you aren't very talented you make up with fire and desire. This lot are poor and gutless.

It is obvious, but so too are many of the issues that have led our lack of winning mentality - such as de-prioritising cups. Martinez and Royle are the only managers in the last 30 years who genuinely believed they could win us a trophy. Royle did it; Martinez came very close.

Moyes perhaps although you got the sense that he believed the achievement was getting there and rubbing shoulders with the rich clubs, without the real belief we could win

I think that the Everton job may well prove to be his greatest challenge in management to date give the deck of cards he has been handed.

The first 45 minutes at the City Ground gave us reason to hope and we have got to build on same starting today.

Danny, I hope you enjoy your train journey home this evening and that the dogs are buzzing along with their owner in the morning.

Keep playing Gray up front so at least the players believe we can score a goal. If you talk about belief, no player in the team would believe we could score with Maupay in the team.

Dyche is saying everything that we all want to hear, but putting it together is going to be very difficult.

I think waiting to see how DCL responds to his rest and recuperation (probably not the right words) will be the first indicator, although I definitely had a better feeling about Everton, after watching the first half last Sunday.

I really believe Dyche is onto something. I believe he's identified the biggest issue hindering the club. The way we rolled over at Anfield (and always do) is indicative of the terrible mentality that dogs us.

I've written on another thread that I'm so impressed we held out for the win yesterday – and we didn't let the disallowed goal ruin us. Well done, Dyche and team.

Professional sports people should not be playing sports if they are not fiercely competitive. No point in having talent without drive. I stopped playing football when I no longer cared about the result.
