Disclaimer () Joe McMahon 1 Posted 06/10/2023 at 11:45:21 A top bloke who likes good music. Oh he could play a bit also! If he was now. I don't think he would fit a 2023 Dyche system unfortunately. That said Dyche did sign Cornet. Dave Williams 2 Posted 07/10/2023 at 09:46:49 An example of how overpaying for players started a long time ago! I think we offered around £400k but the fee was set at £925k or thereabouts by a tribunal which was ridiculously overpriced. We blew a load of money on him, Newell, McDonald Beagrie,Cottee, Johnston and plenty more and so the slide started. Bill Griffiths 3 Posted 07/10/2023 at 10:39:51 While we perhaps never saw the best of him there have been far worse signings than him He seems to be a top class bloke. The book is a good read and will read his previous book sometime. Phil Greenough 5 Posted 07/10/2023 at 13:31:18 Dave @2 Tony Cottee is Everton's 8th best goal scorer, scoring more goals in less games than Sheedy, Ferguson and Cahill, and you thought we wasted money on him? I also remember him paying against us, I remember us playing West Ham after he left us. I was in the Park End and he was about five yards away, on the left hand side of the goal and he missed. I would say on purpose as it would have been easier to Bury it. Dave Williams 6 Posted 07/10/2023 at 22:41:35 Phil-,Tony Cottee's value just before we bought him was £750k. By the time we bought him a few weeks later, it was £2.1M. Yes, he scored goals but he wasn't a team player, didn't contribute outside the penalty area, lacked stamina, and was nowhere near a £2m player. He was bought to replace Heath who was a far better player. Phil Greenough 7 Posted 07/10/2023 at 23:45:49 That's your opinion, Dave, but Cottee scoring every 2.5 games states otherwise. You opine that Adrian Heath was a better player. However, Inchy only scored four more goals than Cottee, in 30 extra games. Hardly far better in my opinion, but I respect yours. John Raftery 8 Posted 07/10/2023 at 00:05:25 Heath was a better all-round footballer than Cottee. After he arrived at Everton in January 1982, Heath was often used in midfield in his first year, only moving up front alongside Sharp in 1983. His work rate, dribbling and passing were at a higher level than Cottee who was purely a penalty-box finisher. Nothing wrong with that of course. Cottee had some great moments but as a player he was limited. Peter Mills 9 Posted 08/10/2023 at 10:23:45 I always thought Tony Cottee was something of a flat-track bully. Other than the 2 he scored in the 4-4 derby, I can't remember him scoring many crucial goals. Dave Williams 10 Posted 08/10/2023 at 18:51:48 That's what it's all about Phil- different opinions expressed without abuse etc! Brian Wilkinson 11 Posted 16/10/2023 at 19:05:27 Heath was at the top of his game, when he got that horrible injury. He was used in midfield early days, before being moved up to support Sharp, goals at Oxford Utd and Highbury in the semi-final, along with a lot more important goals. One of the most underrated players at Everton, had the heart of a lion and had so much energy. When we look back, we lost Southall, Heath and Bracewell through long-term injuries.Paul Bracewell is still one of the best midfielders I've seen in an Everton shirt, stinking bad luck with his injury, overshadowed by the ghost of Peter Reid, Ball, Harvey and Kendall, but what a player Bracewell was.Re-watch the Cup-Winners Cup Final: Bracewell was outstanding.
