Everton youngsters have played in this competition previously, in 2015 and 2016. If they can progress past the group stage, they will compete in the semi-finals, and potentially the final on Sunday.

The tournament’s other group is made up of Schalke, Stuttgart, Palmeiras and Midtjylland.

This looks to be a pretty stern test with Everton selecting players from a range of different levels in the Academy, so a wide range of ages, experience and development.

As Leighton Baines observed, "Along with first and second-year scholars, there'll be four lads from the Under-21s: Roman (Dixon), Frankie (Okoronkwo), Jenson (Metcalfe), and Isaac (Heath).

“For some of them, as first-year scholars playing against potentially a good level of first-year pros, it'll be challenging. There will be a lot of learning, for sure.”

Douglass Lukjanciks is a 15-year-old schoolboy goalkeeper.

With Shalke as one of the four German teams, it will take Everton finishing in the top two of their group in order to progress and have a chance of playing against Danny O'Neill's other team – which could be an interesting comparison of the academy systems that he has commented on a-plenty!
