Both Seamus Coleman and Nathan Patterson mentioned their lack of recent action for Everton in interviews while on international duty this week, with the Club captain admitting he won't "throw my toys out the pram" over not being selected by Sean Dyche.

Coleman says he has had a couple of niggles but has been fit for a number of weeks now despite having only made two substitute appearances since his last start against Aston Villa in January.

Patterson, meanwhile, hasn't started a game since the FA Cup defeat to Luton Town at the end of that month and hasn't featured at all since coming on as a late substitute at Fulham three days later.

In the interim, Dyche has preferred Ben Godfrey, a centre-half by trade, as a makeshift right-back but his lack of attacking output has made fans question the wisdom of that decision, particularly as the defensive solidity that has characterised the team since the manager took over has ebbed away in recent fixtures.

“I've been fit for the last 8, 10 weeks I'd say, it's just a case of not being selected – which is fine, that happens," Coleman said after being named the Republic of Ireland's man of the match in their 1-0 friendly defeat to Switzerland last night. "I don't know how long I've been back fit but I've been back fit for a while now.

“It was just good to get over here and get some minutes, and feel like I'm ready to go for the next 10 games of the season.

“You always want to be out there. It's a club thing and you support the lads at all times. I've been there before where I've not been playing and I'm not one of them that's going to throw my toys out of the pram, I'm one of them that supports everyone.

"Ultimately, Everton is the main goal for me, not what's at stake for me individually. It's about the team. We've got 10 games now to go back, stick together as a group and keep working hard as a group.

“We've been there before and we know what it takes, but you've got to have a real understanding that we have to work hard between now and the end of the season.”

For his part, Patterson made similar comments following Scotland's home friendly which they lost by a single goal to Northern Ireland. Unfortunately, the young Everton gave the ball away near his own byline which contributed directly to Conor Bradley's winner and he admitted that this is the most challenging period of his career so far.

"Obviously I’m not playing as much as I would like to play but sometimes that’s just football and I’m not the type of person that will just give up," the former Rangers player said.

“I’ll keep training hard and working hard and try and make sure I give myself the best opportunity to get game time. Obviously I came away here and played Friday night and will hopefully get more game time on Tuesday.”

His international boss, Steve Clarke, was asked after the match at Hampden Park whether he felt Patterson was rusty from not having playbed much football recently.

“Possibly, possibly not enough games," Clarke agreed. “but I thought he did well in the game. He did fantastic to get back in (and retrieve the ball after he had given it away before the goal). He did well and then he picked the wrong option. It happens, if you are not playing.

“But he is a young player who we know will be part of what we are trying to do in the future. He will learn.”

Seamus:

"I have been fit for the last 8-10 weeks". Who would doubt him? Utterly outrageous that he hasn't been playing.

He must be a shoo-in for Saturday. If not, all of us will want to know why and in clear words of one syllable. He is a true leader and inspiration. He can cross a ball. He is crucial to our progress.

It would make sense to start Seamus and hope he can add that bit of zest in the attacking third.

If he runs out of steam or we need to tighten things up maybe bring Godfrey on.

I would give Coleman the last ten games, no rotating, start him every game. If needed, give someone else the last 15 minutes, but for me, Coleman starts in front of Godfrey, Young or Patterson for the remaining fixtures.

I would put Coleman in place of either Young or Harrison on the right side. I would leave Godfrey at right-back. Coleman can cross, pass, tackle and run.

Either use Coleman as right-midfield or as a defensive-midfielder; move Garner out to the right. We need a leader in the middle. Godfrey can tackle and run with pace so right-back for me.

Patterson can come in for Coleman on the right side of midfield. No Harrison. Young should be let go at the end of the season. I hope we do not sign Harrison because he has not showed us much this season.

Next game: Pickford, Mykolenko, Branthwaite, Tarkowski, Godfrey, Coleman or Patterson, Onana, McNeil, Garner, Doucouré, Calvert-Lewin.

The Premier League is giving Everton so much crap this season and we face another points deduction in the same season on top of the Premier League not rejecting 777 Partners outright! Unbelievable! mismanagement by the PL!

Well, I don't know how Coleman is playing but he has a goal in him and can cross a ball. Certainly, in the past, he made us more attacking, and was a class above the either of the full backs now.

If he's not the player he was, you have to question why he is on the books. If he is in reasonable shape, you wonder why he's not playing considering the form of the team.

MotM again last night for Ireland and a centre-half being picked out of position for the last six weeks, and not being picky but cost us a couple of goals which were crucial.

Has Seamus fallen out with Dyche? Looks like it, but if he has, shouldn't Dyche put the club first and pick our leader???

I love Seamus, he should start but since when can he cross the ball?

Have to say, Shane, we're looking at a totally different player, Seamus could always cross the ball, just you trying to be funny.

Nope Christy, no humour intended. I disagree completely. He can get it into the box alright but putting it in an area for someone to attack, I think not.

It depends how you read into it.

For me, professionalism from both.

Seamus knows he's coming to the end but still has a lot to offer. Young Patterson demonstrating ambition and wanting to play. I don't have an issue with either.

My only concern is that we are not talking about our midfield, just our defence?

If I could find a pram, I'd throw toys out of it on Coleman's behalf. The Blues need his spirit, leadership, defensive wisdom and ability to move the ball up the pitch quickly and trigger an attack.

Shane's right, though, Christy. Seamus isn't very good at crossing the ball. Weakest aspect of his game. Best I can recall he hasn't crossed a ball for a goal, or even a really good headed chance, in at least four years. (Correct me if your memory is better.)

His greatest cross was the Leeds goal. And yes, if he says it was intentional, I believe him 100%.

Start him, Sean.

His best cross was in Saint-Denis. Well it wasn't even a great cross, but I was behind the goal so it's one I'll remember.

It is hard to understand some of Dyche's decisions. What has Seamus done to fall out of his favor?
Brian Wilkinson
16 Posted 27/03/2024 at 23:37:58
As a Defender, Seamus Coleman has conceded 2 goals and kept 2 clean sheets in 5 matches in the Premier League 2023-24 season. That means when Coleman is on the pitch, his team conceded a goal every 117 minutes. Moreover, he's made 2.70 tackles and 1.16 interceptions for every 90 minutes he was on the pitch. Coleman is also racking up about 3.86 clearances at the same time.

Out of those 5 matches, Coleman has made 6 crosses.

That's Coleman's stats for this season.

These two are a better option than Young, and Dyche cannot keep picking virtually the same team every week if it's a losing one. We do have other options.

Call me a conspiracy theorist but I genuinely believe Dyche has been playing Godfrey in preparation for selling Branthwaite in the summer.

A calculated risk to give him game time, build his confidence, and either be ready to backfill Branthwaite or potentially give him exposure to bring in cash if Dyche doesn't think he's up to it.

Godfrey is not a full-back but has some of the raw material for a decent centre-back but his development has been slowed since joining Everton beyond the initial brief stint under Carlo.

David,

I don't believe Dyche will have a say in transfers.

The owners, current or new, will decide and the manager and DoF will deal with the cards they are dealt and whatever deals they can secure.

If the club decides to sell our £1M investment for £80M, it won't be Dyche's decision.

He just needs to focus on managing the here and now, which includes Branthwaite for at least the rest of this season.

Godfrey's performances at full-back don't inspire any confidence if he's moved to centre-back.

As Danny says, Dyche's job is to manage the next 10 games, picking the best team and tactics from the players he has now, not what he may or may not have in September.

i have no doubt that the manager has and will continue to pick the starting 11 that he thinks gives us the best chance of picking up points.

It's a results business and, no matter how difficult our current set of circumstances are, the manager will not survive unless results pick up.

Looking forward to a recharged Everton picking up 3 points on Saturday afternoon.

You have to wonder under what criteria would you select Godfrey over Coleman? Godfrey is very reluctant to go forward and defensively Coleman is better. Also, I much prefer what Coleman brings as captain rather than Tarkowski or Pickford.

As for Patterson, he was signed at the same time as Mykolenko and where Mykolenko has improved over the years, sadly Patterson hasn't.

But like all players, you don't get better sitting on the bench and it's quite clear that Dyche prefers Godfrey, Young and Coleman ahead of Patterson.

I think he would benefit from a move, as there seems very little future here for him under Dyche.

A few people have said Dyche has fallen out with Seamus, I don't know how that technically can happen because every single manager that Seamus has played under has praised his character, personality and professionalism as the highest they've ever encountered in football.

I want him in for his for motivation and being a role model for the fight, but also despite his age I still think he has footballing qualities to offer. On the flipside, I don't want him to come in rusty, make a few mistakes and the keyboard warriors jump on his back in a flash, he deserves much more respect than that.

Danny O’Neill
24 Posted 28/03/2024 at 10:48:43
I'm not sure, Rennie.

He is 35, and for a player whose game was based on pace as well as having a serious injury, it might just be that he's in his twilight years.

He can still play a part, but maybe not on a regular basis. Although I am sure Seamus thinks he can!!

The game has changed yet again and the need for the conventional 2 full-backs has waned.

Most managers will play 3 at the back and one full-back with licence to play as an attacking wingback. This is because many teams do not use 2 wingers like in the old days of open attacking football.

Coleman has been an exceptional player but sadly, like all of us, is not getting any younger and certain attributes are no longer with us.

Paterson is no Seamus and has not yet proven he is Premier League standard but he has time to improve.

Patterson is 22 and at that age should be playing if he is going to make the grade. If Dyche doesn't rate him, he would be better moving on.

Seamus is better than Godfrey at right-back.

Godfrey for centre-back??? He cant jump...

Danny O’Neill
28 Posted 28/03/2024 at 12:19:00
Seamus wasn't the best right back when he joined us and we played him further up front for a period.

I digress, but my brother and his wife are about to have a second child.

I've suggested Seamus if it's a boy.

Then we'll have a Daniel, Connor, Sean (Kopite) and Patrick joined by a Seamus who will be blue!!

Seamus O'Neill has a nice ring to it.

Right-back is one of the priority positions to fill in the summer, I'd say. Our lack of options there has had us unbalanced all season.

Patterson should go on loan to a Championship club to belatedly develop and Godfrey should be sold while he still has some value. Unless Dyche has some plans to play 3 centre backs which is the best fit for Godfrey as a wide centre back whose strength is recovery pace and defending the channels.

Has Patterson played in six or more consecutive games for Everton? I remember the part he played when we battered Brighton away last season, we played on the front foot that night and Nathan had a very good game. I think the more he plays, the better he will become.

I wouldn't argue over who to play between him and Seamus I'd play the two of them in tandem on the right side with one covering for the other when we attack.

Iain Johnston
31 Posted 28/03/2024 at 12:38:51
I'd consider playing Seamus in a right-midfield role infront of Patterson.

Mind you, for me, Dyche has them too narrow anyway, so is there any point to us having wide men?

Both McNeil & Harrison drop back & come inside the majority of the time.

Danny #28, seems to me there was an actor by that name.

Brian #16, do you have comparable stats for Godfrey and Young?

Andrew #27, correct. The next time I see Godfrey win a contested header will be the first time I've seen Godfrey win a contested header. He has absolutely no Premier League future as a center-back.

However, Brian #22, I've seen in recent weeks why Dyche would choose Godfrey over Coleman (not that I agree with the decision), because Godfrey has shown the pace that Seamus no longer has, and has made some big blocks that Seamus could no longer have reached. If Dyche's only criterion is defense, Godfrey may be a bit better at this point. But he's so useless in attack that I'd still rather see Coleman or Patterson there.

David K #18, I agree with Danny. Dyche's only priority is to keep us up, and he will have zero say over Thelwell's transfer decisions this summer. Ownership and circumstances will dictate what we do in the market.

Seamus makes very few mistakes as a defender, unlike Godfrey but he's not a full-back, so why Seamus doesn't start is a mystery considering he was MotM the other night for us (Ireland). I agree that he should only play one game a week, considering his age.
Andy Crooks
35 Posted 28/03/2024 at 19:22:08
In my view, had Seamus been picked ahead of Godfrey, we would not be in such an appalling run. I accept that the coach knows more than anyone of us, however, no coach always knows more than all of us.

I admire and still support Dyche but not on this one. It defies any logic.

Bill Gienapp

Godfrey needs to go. This has gotten ridiculous. You can't have two full-backs who offer nothing in attack when you're laboring to score goals... and to make matters worse, his defensive impact just grows shakier by the week.

I have no idea why Dyche gets so hung up on these decisions – it's reminiscent of last season when he stuck doggedly by Keane, then finally played Mina and it got us over the finish line.
