Season › 2024-25 › Opinion › Talking Points England Women win Euros!!! by Dave Abrahams | 27/07/2025 24 Comments [Jump to last] Well done to the Lionesses for their penalty shoot-out win over Spain! The women’s final was a very good game to watch and the England squad seem to be managed by the lady in charge a lot better than the men’s team were by Sir Southgate. The ladies game is getting bigger and better every season and is getting watched by bigger attendances — maybe Goodison Park will last a lot longer than I thought it would. Derek Knox 2 Posted 27/07/2025 at 20:30:45 Well done to the Lion Jesses, on another win, and successful Penalty Shoot Out ! Robert Tressell 3 Posted 27/07/2025 at 20:54:44 Yes Derek - great to see the women bring home a trophy. Thought the Spanish were very unlucky not to win in 120 minutes. They are good side - but we held our nerve. Danny O'Neill 4 Posted 28/07/2025 at 07:05:38 I watched the final last night. My view remains the same, having watched and helped coach women's teams for years. The standard has improved over the years. The game is naturally slower and littered with mistakes, more so than the mens game. The goalkeepers are a bit iffy and the penalties have been eye-brow raising. But it's entertaining to watch and will continue to grow. I think our owners have seen the potential hence Goodison and player investment. On wage parity, I think the players get that from the FA, the difference being bonuses and sponsorship. League wise, it will be a while as it will be based on revenue generated.Average WSL attendances were down last season. Only Arsenal neared 30,000. I think Everton's at Walton Hall Park struggled to reach 1,000. We've only just had the first £1m pound transfer in the women's game.It will be a while before the WSL is generating anything like the Premier League in terms of TV revenue and sponsorship, which in turn will reflect salaries. That isn't being dismissive to the standard, quality and improvement of the women's game, just hard financial reality. Colin Glassar 5 Posted 28/07/2025 at 07:14:34 Well done to the lionesses. I forgot it was on last night as I dont follow the female game but well done all the same. Wiegman will surely get an honorary Damehood now and it will be well deserved. Andy Crooks 6 Posted 28/07/2025 at 07:54:17 I like the women's football and watched plenty of games. I just hate the team being called "The Lionesses". I think it sounds patronizing and ridiculous. Mick O'Malley 7 Posted 28/07/2025 at 08:07:25 I live in a house full of women, I've got 3 daughters and a granddaughter and Ill openly admit I've never watched 1 minute of women's football. I'm just not interested in it. I've watched the women in the 5 nations which I enjoyed but the football is not for me. That doesn't make me a dinosaur or a misogynist… to be honest I don't watch the England men's team cos I hate International football. Andy Meighan 8 Posted 28/07/2025 at 08:45:37 Go in any pub club, workplace etc, where the majority of folk are male and I'll guarantee 99.9% of them won't be talking about the Women's Euros (coughs). But I'll bet you they'll be talking about Evertons tour of The States or Liverpools tour of Asia. You see, in my opinion, in our city you are born into a blue family or a red family and you quickly learn from an early age to love your club with a passion, and you gloat and mock when they get beat, and celebrate when we win. This will never ever happen to the women's game because, sorry, there's no pull for it.I'm not apologising here, women's football is absolutely shit but its rammed down our throats by the woke BBC and Sky, so I suppose its going to get the coverage it really doesn't warrant.I've said on another thread here I know a hell of a lot of Evertonians and I doubt if one of them could name me a player, let along recall a game.I've got brothers and mates who recall games through the ages, 60s, 70s, 80s etc like they were yesterday.Women and football doesn't mix.Sexist? No — just telling the truth. Peter Mills 9 Posted 28/07/2025 at 09:09:50 I really enjoyed the game. Fair play to that England team, they know how to battle through. Mike Gaynes 10 Posted 28/07/2025 at 16:56:52 Lucy Bronze says she played the entire tournament with a fractured tibia. And then injured the opposite knee. Ian Bennett 11 Posted 28/07/2025 at 17:03:24 Everton look like they've sold women's team to parent. Bye bye PSR. Bill Watson 12 Posted 28/07/2025 at 23:33:01 The Women's game is different to the Men's. Not better or worse but different... just like tennis and some other sports.Danny; I agree the Women's game is littered with poor passes and ball watching but, over the years, with better coaching etc., that should improve.Over the last decade the biggest single improvement I've noticed is that of the goalkeepers. The two last night were quite good. Dale Self 13 Posted 29/07/2025 at 01:52:30 I think Ryan had a "Yes, Chloe Kelly" comment that should have gone first. One cannot discount the football heart it takes to come back like they did (3 matches in a row, in the knockout). Agyamangnificent! Frank Wolfe 14 Posted 29/07/2025 at 05:51:56 Geez. BBC rammed the final down 12.2 million viewers on Sunday, making it the most watched television moment of 2025 across all TV broadcasters! Bill Watson 15 Posted 29/07/2025 at 05:58:37 I don't think Wiegman is that good a manager. Before the game even she said, "Somehow, we've got to the Final. Now we have to take full advantage of that".What she is, is incredibly lucky. When it's time for Moyes to move on, I'd offer her the Everton job in a heat beat! Ian Jones 16 Posted 29/07/2025 at 07:18:18 Andy @ 8, interesting thoughts! It's a pity that one of Kevin's comments about women's football didn't get transferred across from a previous thread – in my opinion, he made the perfect summary concerning the current state of the women's game.Sorry, can't find the thread anymore – possibly deleted. Danny O'Neill 17 Posted 29/07/2025 at 07:32:26 Andy @8.You're entitled to yor view, like us all.I don't like watching cricket, golf or darts, but many do.Who's truth are you talking about though? I'm not sure you speak for many. Robert Tressell 18 Posted 29/07/2025 at 07:50:52 Andy @8, A high proportion of Premier League games are dull and shit but they're still sexed up as though it's the Thriller in Manila by Sky etc. It's the richest league in the world but the football on show isn't much of a spectacle a lot of the time. Andrew Ellams 19 Posted 29/07/2025 at 07:51:15 Frank @14, The semi-final was also the most watched programme on ITV this year. Dave Abrahams 20 Posted 29/07/2025 at 12:36:46 Everton had a cracking little player on loan from Man City not long ago – Jess Park. She reminded me of Pat Nevin with her dribbling skills, played for England and scored this season. Not sure why she wasn't in the squad for this tournament. Maybe she was injured? She was certainly good enough. Lucy Bronze who Mike@10 refers to, what a player, knows the game inside out, a very astute footballerWrong sex; otherwise, she'd have stopped all arguments about our right-back position if she played for us! Danny O'Neill 21 Posted 29/07/2025 at 12:59:30 I mentioned that about Bronze the other night, Dave.Pat Nevin. What a very good and technically gifted footballer. He was different, but unfortunately for him, he had Trevor Stevens boots to fill. A bit like Stuart McCall being labelled the next Peter Reid.At least Nevin wasn't as infuriating as Peter "beat a player 3 times" Beagrie, whilst everyone in the box was waiting and the momentum was gone.Back to the women, I hope England enjoy the deserved moment. I think Everton could be onto something here. Steve Brown 22 Posted 29/07/2025 at 13:23:19 Andy @ 8, I'll introduce you to my cousin Cathy Gore who won the women's FA Cup in 1989. She is tough as shit and soon help you re-evaluate. Bobby Mallon 23 Posted 29/07/2025 at 19:58:37 Bill Watson @15 give your head a wobble Si Cooper 24 Posted 29/07/2025 at 23:23:51 Dave (20), Jess Park was in the squad but, for some reason, she didnt get any game time. She wasnt the only one who didnt.
