David Moyes has confirmed the appointment of Alan Irvine as his assistant manager. Charlie Adam, most recently manager of Fleetwood Town, has also been brought in as Moyes’s set-piece coach.

Irvine has worked in the role before, firstly during Moyes’s first spell as the Everton boss, as well as his time at West Ham United.

Speaking to the club’s official media channels, Moyes said: "I'm delighted to have been able to add Alan and Charlie to our coaching staff. Obviously, Alan is somebody who I have known for a very long time and have tremendous respect for.

“His knowledge of the game, as well as his understanding of what is required at Everton – a club that means a lot to both of us – will be invaluable.”

Irvine’s first game back with the Toffees will be away to Brighton this weekend. As a player Irvine spent three years with Everton in the 1980s, making 79 appearances and scoring four goals.

News that Alan Irvine and Charlie Adam have joined Davey Moyes.

Adam is a strange one?

He was a midfielder all his career but is apparently joining as a "set-piece" coach - which I wouldn't have necessarily thought to be his forte, given his playing career.

Time will tell - no doubt.

I guess we'll have to overlook the 28 games Adam played for Liverpool!

Happy to do it as long as he does a decent job

Re Charlie Adam, I now expect every free kick we hit to look like his at Wembley.

Ah, never mind. If he can just teach our guys to clear the first defenders on set-pieces, I'll be thrilled.

When you watch any game of football, the percentage of set pieces that don't beat the first man is quite high, Mike.

Although there is a very, very, very simple solution for this, it's very rare that you see the front man clearing the cross under any real pressure.

Charlie Adam was a nasty SOAB but he knew how to take free kicks. They loved him at Blackpool.

So now players have to be shown how to kick the ball… I wonder who coached Sheedy?

For set pieces, the coach is tasked with devising different ‘plays’ rather than teaching the taker how to kick a ball. I’m always amazed how badly set-up nearly all teams are on attacking set-pieces. My Sunday league team used to be better organised (mainly because I took charge of organising the set-pieces).

Mike,

Irvine and Adam joining Moyes's coaching staff, let me be the first to say “Jobs for the boys”!

It stinks.

It's the corner that gets cleared at the near post uncontested that I was especially referring to, Danny.

How many times have you seen a bad corner end up creating a chance, by simply putting a player at the near post, to flick on or put pressure on a bad ball?

Taking a good free kick or corner is a skill that can be taught and practiced. It is a weakness at Everton when McNeil is not playing and, even when he is, we need another who can do it with his right foot.

Adam can also be our dirty tackle coach.

Dave,

Just to add fuel to your fire, am I right in thinking that Charlie's agent was Kenny Moyes, brother of David?

John, as reported on a Rangers site:

“The pair know each other well. Moyes' brother is the agent of Adam, while the ex-Gers, Blackpool, Liverpool and Stoke midfielder lodged with Moyes's family when making his way as a youngster at Ibrox.”

Tony and Mike , exactly and it drives me nuts.

I was the set piece taker on every Sunday league team I played on for 30 years, and the only times I couldn't clear the front man were when the area around the corner flag was a mud hole or a divot and the ref wouldn't let me move the ball out of it.

It staggers me that so many professionals playing on tailored fields can't elevate the ball over one guy. We had a final free kick chance at Bournemouth and Young couldn't even hoist the ball into the mixer. Drilled it right to the first defender. Too easy.

Dave, why does it stink? Don't most managers hire assistants they already know and trust? Would you expect Moyes to do a bunch of job interviews and hire guys he doesn't know?

Dave (26). I agree about Adams, dunno how he's a set piece specialist coach.

Fleetwood sacked him as manager 22 December and before that he was Burnley's loans manager - maybe he worked for the Provvy too doing doorstep loans?

For me, we were better under Moyes when Irvine was assistant manager. Round was far too negative.

Mike,

Moyes has been in the game for a very long time, do you think he doesn't know plenty of coaches, has he worked with Adam before? Possibly he got to know him when he allegedly lodged with him.

What has Irvine done lately? The Scottish coach worked with him at West Ham; were the two of them let go together or did Moyes resign?

He let the whole set of very experienced coaches go at Man Utd to bring his own men in… that worked out well – although he was never good enough for the Man Utd job.

I hope, for the sake of Everton, Moyes knows what he is doing bringing these coaches in, and that includes Baines.

Adam and Irvine joined the team. That's us done with this transfer window, then. 😂

Not a fan of Adam, and he never had a good word to say about our club.

Just a thought: if you're looking for a free-kick expert, there's only one name, Sheedy?

When Charlie Adam was a player his agent was one Kenny Moyes brother of Davie. Wonder if he still represents him?

I remember seeing an overweight Adam get red carded for a late tackle on one of ours at Stoke during the Beast from the East winter. Rooney was laughing because it was such an old school challenge, sliding in the snow.

He got a bit cocky while at the RS but otherwise always seems fairly sensible to me.

Got no real problems with him being ex-RS (Adam), as long as he improves the quality, or contributes to make us better, whether that be from free-kicks or whatever. Our initial aim is to at least finish safely. Any higher up the table would be a bonus !

Can't believe Moyes would just bring him in for the ' old pals act ' alone. Hopefully we can build on Sunday's result, but, it won't be easy or a given.

Irvine I can understand because the manager has worked with him.

Adam as set piece coach just doesn't add up. Most clubs who have a set piece coach, seem to have an expert in that part of the game - not just some random ex-player.

Successful offensive set pieces are not just about the delivery but the positioning, the movement, the blocking etc. The one at Arsenal is apparently some sort of set piece Rainman, with a whole host of 'plays' and 'counter plays'. It's almost on the scale of American Football and their 'Playbooks'.

It's a different discipline really and not just limited to corners/free kicks. Next time you watch Arsenal look at how they maximise their throw ins. If the ball is in the opposition half, it never gets thrown backwards, always forwards, but aimed at getting the ball on to the floor and into danger areas.

At the other end, Brentford do loads of work on defending set pieces with their coach and I believe they have the lowest number of goals conceded from them. Watch their pre-gamr warm ups. They spend 5-10 mins practicing positions and responsibilities for defending corners.

This decision on Adam does really seem a job for the boys decision, as there is no evidence whatsoever that he has these type of skills.

The new England assistant coach, Anthony Barry (ex Everton youth player) who made his name as a set piece coach, wrote his dissertation based on an analysis of 16,380 throw-ins across a full Premier league season.

That's the level of detail those guys go into. We get Charlie Adam who has written over 16,380 betting slips.

Liam #22 and others

Let’s give Adams a chance eh? As well as being a superb set piece taker himself, he played under Stoke’s Pulis who maximised set pieces long before there was a specialist job in that area. Hence he would have been exposed to that aspect of the game.

Chuck in coaching badges that I expect he’s earnt.

And lest we forget ‘In Moyes we Trust’ either has merit or it’s a stupid sound bite.

I’m happy to trust him for the moment. Let’s get behind him eh?

I only come here here to grumble and make sarky comments Ben tbh 🤣

I hope you're right though and he's a success. Nil Satis and all that.
