Match Preview

Everton’s next Premier League game is against Brighton & Hove Albion in the Amex Stadium, with David Moyes still unable to call on his more creative players who can carry the game to the opposition in what will be his 700th Premier League game as a manager.

In his pre-match press conference, Moyes revealed that Dwight McNeil might need surgery to cure the knee injury that has kept him on the sidelines since early December, with five other players also missing:

“It looks like we’re probably going to have to get him back to the specialist and see – I’m saying surgery, it might be they decide something else – but he’s going to go back and see the specialist again. It’s a real blow because we need him back for things like deliveries and set pieces but also for his general play.

“By all accounts, everyone has told me he’s performed very well for Everton recently. So, not to have him right now is a big blow.

“I was only just told about this about half an hour before the press conference. He (McNeil) was out on the grass this morning and they were trying to get him going but he doesn't feel right. So they were always saying if he didn't come through today they would take him back to the specialists, so I'm only relaying what I've been told.

“If you get opened up (surgery), I don't think many people come back before four-six weeks. But it obviously depends on what they do. My general feeling is they don't think it's anything so bad, it's not like he's got a cruciate or anything like that, I don't think so, so hopefully he'll be okay.”

Moyes had better news on James Garner and Tim Iroegbunam, neither of whom have featured since the goalless draw with Newcastle Utd on 5 October; both have been in training and are on their way back to fitness, but won't feature this weekend on the South Coast.

“James is a wee bit further on than Tim at the moment. Tim's been back in training the last three or four days. Jimmy's been back in and around training, as well.

“In an ideal scenario, you'd be trying to give them a couple of Under-21s games if possible and get them some more practice, but if we need to use them, then I would do. They'll not be too far away because I just need them back in and around the squad to give that little bit more depth.”

Seamus Coleman has been struggling with his fitness for most of the season, and is still out for this one. Youssef Chermiti now has a thigh issue after recovering from his foot problem that needed surgery last August. And Armando Broja is sidelined for 3 months with an ankle injury suffered in a 2-0 FA Cup win over Peterborough earlier this month.

Kick-Off: 3 pm Saturday 25 January 2025
Referee: Tim Robinson
Assistants: Tim Wood and Steve Meredith
Fourth Official: Tom Nield
Video Assistant Referee: Graham Scott
Assistant VAR: Gary Beswick

McNeil could be out a lot longer. Possible surgery on his knee.

Surgery possibly needed for McNeil ?

Dont like the sound of that

McNeil hasn't played since the Wolves game on 4 December, and listening to Moyes's press conference today, he's going to have to have surgery, so they've wasted 7 weeks, before making that decision, unreal?

4 Posted 24/01/2025 at 14:44:39
I don't know that you can drive these things to that extent, Christy.

It may be that he had been recovering from the original injury but something is still not quite right inside the joint, and that has become more apparent as he upped the physical stress and strain on his knee as he tried to get back to full fitness.

On the one hand, you could argue that professional players should be strong enough and fit enough to avoid injury, especially considering how much we pay them.

On the other hand, they are merely human, as are the physios who have to assess them and do the right thing to get them back in shape.

So yea, 7 weeks wasted... unreal.

I wouldn't call it 'unreal'. Injuries take time, especially ligament injuries, and there are no guarantees one way or another.

The knee joint is one of the most complex joints in the body (I'm a massage therapist so I know a little bit about anatomy) and initial diagnoses can change during rehabilitation.

Nobody has 'wasted 7 weeks' because they would have been monitoring him closely, and clearly initial scans showed no reason for surgery (always a last resort). From what I'm reading, McNeil has come back and tried to train but broken down again, leading to the requirement for surgery.

Not everything is as black & white as you might think when it comes to injuries.

Mixed feelings on this one.

I have to say that with the degree of expertise and the cutting edge technology available these days that Mcneil would have had extensive scans at the outset and regular scans, maybe weekly, going forward.

As I say, with the level of expertise available you'd expect a diagnosis and prognosis that would, barring unforeseen setbacks, have come sooner than this.

I know every injury is different but if he's been out since the 4th of December I'm a little surprised that after seven weeks it's only the fact that McNeil himself has said "It doesn't feel right" has prompted a return to the specialist for possible surgery.

I accept that surgery is a last resort as the player is likely to be out for 4-6 weeks minimum following the surgery (from Moyes himself) but I still think seven weeks to get to that point seems a long time.

I remember reading something a while back which said that (whilst it may seem counter intuitive) when you are as fit as modern day players are and playing right up to the maximum possible, you are actually in more danger of picking up an injury.

Especially strains, like hamstrings and on joints, like knees. In a similar way to how in international athletics, injuries like these are commonplace.

The same article spoke also of how when you are super fit with low body fat you are also more susceptible to colds and viruses.

Have I missed an update on Chermiti saying he is good to go?

I worry about his injury more than the others. An avulsion on the big toe doesn't sound like much but if you can't get it to take like it was originally, I'd think it would permanently feel ‘off' and you might have to relearn even basics like running or shooting.

Jeff Armstrong
9 Posted 24/01/2025 at 15:36:59
I think Tim and Garner are going to have to get match fit from the bench by getting 20 minutes here and there plus training.

We need depth on the bench and even at 80/90% fit, they could prove useful in the coming games.

Si Cooper
10 Posted 24/01/2025 at 15:38:59
Liam (7), you can certainly have unbalanced training which can cause greater susceptibility to certain injuries but I would expect footballers to get the best advice and monitoring. Generally, well distributed muscle will play some part in strengthening joints.

The rigours of playing a contact sport at high speed and full-on impacts will still test even the fittest bodies just because there will always be limits to what stresses are absorbable without something giving way. Increased speed will obviously increase impact stresses, other things being equal.

3 points and a clean sheet would be fantastic! 3 points brilliant! However, a bit more realistically, at best we can get a point.

Obviously we have to go to win every game but Leicester next week is yet another “must win”. Same team and attitude as last week please.

12 Posted 24/01/2025 at 15:51:25
Despite having the odd flare up myself, I don't know enough about knees to unpack any of this, but it doesn't sound promising.

It's good to have people like James (5) who know a little bit more from his occupation as a massage therapist. Let's just hope there's a happy ending. [Sorry, James… couldn't resist!]

Justin Doone
13 Posted 24/01/2025 at 16:23:58
Everton don't do short-term injuries. Gutted for McNeil and whish him a full and complete recovery asap.

Whilst I'm happy with Moyes and the improvement in team performances, I feel Brighton's passing game is a huge test and I'm not expecting anything from the game.

But we are creating better chances and playing in a more upbeat manner. I hope the players keep going, even if we fall behind, and keep their discipline to prevent needless suspensions and injuries.

Moyes did say, he didn't think it was serious. James knows a lot more than me, but would an MRI weeks ago not show up a problem with his knee?

Moyes seemed confident of bringing players in before the end of the window.

Christy, MRIs are not perfect views, and conditions in the knee would likely have changed as well after the workouts.

So no, you cannot assume that an MRI would provide the kind of perfect clarity you're expecting.

Liam,

I'm not as sure as you about track athlete injuries. Carl Lewis went 13 years after high school without a significant injury and he was certainly highly trained but a car accident ended his streak. His coach Tom Tellez was very good and he knew how much work his athlete could safely do.

MRIs have to be read and sometimes there is doubt about the cause of what is seen. I went through that with my hip last year, but generally they are accurate.

I wonder if McNeil was playing through pain earlier in the season.

His form has fluctuated and I think he missed West Ham away on 9 November due to a knee injury. He then came back in for the next three games before missing all of them since.

So is this our fault for rushing him back?

Michael #4 and others, you just never know with knees.

I'm a Chicago Bulls fan. In early January 2022 our star guard Lonzo Ball underwent arthroscopic surgery for a torn meniscus. He was projected to miss three to six weeks. No ligament damage or anything, just the meniscus.

He was out of basketball for 33 months. He returned to the court in October 2024 and started a game for the first time last week.

There is no higher level of sophistication in orthopaedic medicine than what is used to treat NBA players. Yet this happened.

In the hope I'm not jinxing anything, but we've a decent record at Brighton. Won in 2023; almost, should have, won there last year.

We have to keep Mitoma quiet, not sure who we pick to best do that? Would love a win, would settle for a point.

What ever way we cut it, having McNeil – one of our best players – injured is not good. He is our dead-ball expert and also has an eye for goal. He is certainly missed when not playing.

Jimmy Garner can provide the deliveries and so we need him back up to speed quickly. I am not sure Moyes will drop Doucoure for Jimmy but hopefully he can get a run out for at least 20 minutes.

I do not see the starting 11 changing from last week. I hope Armstrong is also given a run-out. Hopefully while in a winning position. As has been mentioned above, we need to keep Mitoma quiet during the game.

I might be wrong but, historically speaking, aren't we usually shit getting players back from “knocks”?

If I remember correctly, over the years we've been told certain players will miss a game due to a knock or slight strain only for them to disappear into a black hole for weeks and/or months on end.

I was thinking the other day that coming though as a kid at Burnley and then playing for Dyche at Everton, has he ever been in an attacking team where he has support, runners and instructions to get to the byline? He could be transformed!

There is no kneed to post anything else on this match/knee thread. Paul Hewitt (Hewey to his closest friends) has pronounced. He has predicted Brighton 3 Us 1.

There is now nothing at all that anyone can do once PH (to his good friends) has made his prediction. We can only start preparing ourselves today for a 3-1 loss.

Made up for Rob and Liam (and Neil)!

Paul, it seems a hell of a long journey to make, knowing we're going to lose 3-1. All that time and money spent, all for nothing. Ah well, there's always next week!

The first test event is against Wigan U18s. PH has us down for a 4-1 defeat! 😄😄😄

The game is a free hit, any points gained will be a bonus.

The teams below us are less likely to get something than us.

We have 20 points from 21 games – very very close to 1 point per game, which is clearly better than the 4 teams below us.

I think we will stay up and have at least 4 or 5 points to spare, that is if we don't lose too many important players through injuries.

Colin, and others, I agree, we have a poor record. Benitez got rid of our Medical Director and the McNeil situation is odd. Why has it taken this long to decide he needs surgery?

On we go. I'll see some of you in Brighton.

Richard #34, when Dyche first took over from Lampard, McNeil was used as an out and out winger. Head down, straight to the byline and putting crosses in. We won tons of corners with him playing so directly. So he has played that way under Dyche and can play that way under Moyes if Moyes chooses to.

Harvey’s Best Sussex Bitter, made in nearby Lewes.
Best pint around here (in winter)
At home games I drink the Guinness as it’s decent in Liverpool but shite down here.
At Brighton, apart from last season, they serve it draft in the “fan zone” and inside in the concourse. The bar staff are local students from Falmer and some wear Everton tees. It’s a good away day - especially the trip before last!
Apparantly we’re getting beat tomorrow but I’ve not told the missus as she’d think me mad for going a game I’d already given up on.

The blonde stuff coming in from the contintent has decimated the British brewing trade and having started drinking befor the aforementioned "blonde invasion", I do truly miss some of the Great British Bitters that are no longer in production.

I am going for a 2-0 Everton win, normally when a player is on the ropes they normally pop up with a goal so expecting Doucoure to knock one in tomorrow.

Seems Moyes believes it is Harrison’s confidence that is the issue and will work on it, maybe look to put him on the left side with McNeils injury and move Ndiaye inside could be an option for me, that’s if we do not get someone through the transfer window.

I fully expect to see Danny singing I do like to be beside the seaside come 4.55 tomorrow and a pleasant journey back home

Keep the faith Blues.

To me she is a a fellow historian who for professional reasons I have had wine with. I took no notice of her physical presence to respect professional boundaries. She may or may not have had a lisp Hugh, it was the value and quality of her words alone that mattered in this professional setting. I admire her intellect though it should be said that Sussex is nowhere near being a top-tier graduate history programme.

Mark (69) - you'll guess no doubt, from the fact that I am answering your posts in reverse order, that I have started at the last and worked back - LOL. To be honest, I haven't tried Butty Bach. Nowadays I very rarely visit any pubs having become more of a red wine drinker and - like many that are contributing to the death of the Britsh Pubs, do most of my drinking at home, with my good lady.

I do still occassionally, enjoy a pint or two of bitter, but I much prefer draught to bottled.

I truly do miss draught "Buckleys Bitter" which was prevalent in my locals when I first started drinking. They were bought out by Brains of Cardiff.

Brains produce a very nice pint of bitter too - but its not Buckleys.

I think we’ve got it all to play for in this game. Brighton are very up and down this season. Just give them plenty to worry about in defence and it should derail all their attacking spontaneity.
Hugh, Butty Bach is a pleasant quaff which I’ve only tried out of the bottle. Some hand pulled draught bitters were far superior to even the keg variants but there is such a multitude of choice in bottles nowadays that even the fussiest drinker (yes, that’s me) can find half a dozen varieties that are suitable for a proper session.
PF, what about Kate Williams and Suzannah Lipscomb? How do their academic credentials stand up?
Paul Ferry
97 Posted 24/01/2025 at 23:46:21
Ah, my mistake, it's Suzannah Lipscomb who left Roehampton Uni where she was a prof. not Ms Worsley. SL also taught at the University of East Anglia.

She did a very good Oxford doctorate with their top early modern French historian Robin Briggs on something like disciplining women in early modern Languedoc. Her book academic The Voices of Nimes is very well respected. So she has cred. in spades, though I thought that her programme on England's witch-hunt was pretty awful.

I think she's married but she was pretty open about bisexuality in Oxford.

I've never met Kate Williams Si. I have a mate in the history dept at Reading where she is a prof of public history I think it is, who says nice things about her. I have a good mate who was high up the admin ladder at Somerville College in Oxford where KW did her Doctorate. She also says nice things but would not put her in the premier league. Now the Royal Oak, over the road from Somerville, there's a good alehouse.

Don't know if it's the same these days but I could swear it was made from fermenting baked beans due to the flatulence it used to induce the next day.

Today should be a good litmus test of whether the first half against Tottenham was a sign of things to come or a fluke.

I imagine we'll see the same lineup and hope that Lindstrøm has another good day on the right flank. Brighton have plenty of bright players and the likes of Mitoma and Minteh will fancy their chances running at O'Brien and Mykolenko.

I've heard that Moyes was impressed with Garner in training this week and imagine we'll see him at some point, will be interesting to see where as Gueye and Mangala have looked a solid and able central pairing lately.

A draw here would be very respectable and hopefully put us an effective 6 points ahead of Ipswich (as our goal difference is currently much better).

If Everton can keep the focus and belief of the 1st half v Spurs, they've an excellent chance today and as good a sidecar Brighton are they like ant team, have their off days.

So clinical finishing today and Lindstrom, Calvert-Lewin and O'Brien to get on the scoreboard. Everton to win 3-0.

Martin Mason
107 Posted 25/01/2025 at 08:00:46
Hopefully we'll see a good performance but the real downside would be to play really well and lose.

The money is on a Brighton win or a draw but we have a decent chance if we can lift our game just a bit. If Iroegbunam and Garner were played in, I would fancy our chances much better. A draw would be acceptable for me at least.

Contrast that to Thatcher when all the Americans loved her, which maybe explains the Trump thing, and I only know one Brit that did, and still does!

For all the praise Brighton get, the fact is that last season they only won the same amount of points as we did (deduction excluded) and this season they are simply a mid table team (9th).

They might have a great scouting system and play some lovely football but they are nothing special at all. They may beat us today, but we've definitely got a decent chance and with DCL now being given soke chances and Ndiaye/Lindstrom looking much more enthused, hopefully we can get something. I definitely fancy us to score at least one.

Safe journey to everyone travelling today.

Paul - Modesty stops me from making an outright declaration that at one time I might have given Lucy's husband "a good run for his money", in the "Handsome Stakes", but at 75 and with the side effects of my blood pressure medication, nowadays it would be strictly, red wine and conversation - LOL.
Colin - I think the that unless someone comes out and says specifically that they support X, Y or Z, the media, by default, says that they are RS supporters!

I can see there being a more cautious approach than the last couple of games. Maybe less of a press. It won't be Dychesque but it probably won't be too far away.

Will be interesting to see how Moyes sets up away to a decent side.

And of course the Doucoure problem persists. I guess they're trying to solve it through the market but would be good to see what the plan is if we don't get someone in.

Robert Tressell
117 Posted 25/01/2025 at 10:30:03
Probably right, Ernie.

I was just looking at Brighton's last outing – the 1-3 away win at Old Trafford. They're a talented attacking side and with Webster coming in for Dunk they won't be particularly weakened.

But we showed on the good run of draws against Chelsea, Man City and Arsenal that we can soak up pressure. The issue is posing a threat on the counter and set pieces.

Hopefully Lindstrom and Ndiaye are able to get forward and support Calvert-Lewin. O'Brien to get his first league goal from a Charlie Adam inspired set-piece masterclass?

Laurie Hartley

Derek Knox
119 Posted 25/01/2025 at 10:38:54
I know we have a limited squad to choose from, but please, please, no Doucoure, we need eleven men from the start.

Hopefully Dom has learned from last game that staying central (mostly) pays dividends in terms of scoring chances. Mind you, Ndiaye and Lindstrom providing regular contributions both personally, and to Dominic helped.

More of the same please.

Who would have thought that we would see such a change in style and personnel in such a short time under David Moyes? Jake O'Brien given his first start, playing the game on the front foot, Lindstrom after just a couple of training sessions under Moyes looks a different player.

Then the promotion of Baines to the first team coaching group, a new set piece coach hired. The change of formation which allowed us to get more men in the box, playing the ball up closer to DCL also paid dividends.

Today will be a lot tougher than Spurs were last week but I am sure we will not just sit back and allow Brighton to come at us for 90 minutes. For the first time in months, I am actually looking forward to watching us away from home.

Mal van Schaick
125 Posted 25/01/2025 at 11:20:15
It looks like we are getting a few back from injury, so our bench will give us more options.

I agree with Brian #120. We could not carry on with the same style and tactics under Dyche, as we were on a downward spiral, so for Moyes to take a different view and inspire some confidence within the squad is refreshing for the players and fans. If we get some consistency and results to go with that, I am hoping that we gain a better league position.

Not sure Doucoure deserves the pelters he gets. Not our most technically proficient player perhaps but very few players work as hard as him and cover as much ground. Long term I’m sure Thelwell or whoever runs recruitment will have their eyes on an upgrade at the 10 spot (or even a winger to facilitate Ndiaye moving there) but short term Doucoure gives a physicality and work rate that Moyes will appreciate. He’s been a bit goalshy this season but his 7 goals last season were vital and he’s probably the closest we’ve currently got to a Tim Cahill type in terms of making those late runs into the box.

John @124,

If Moyes has watched any games this season that Harrison has been involved in, Harrison will be putting out the cones and nowhere near the team.

I can't see that switching wings will miraculously improve his ability to pass a ball to a teammate!

Certainly understand the hundreds of reds travelling North; however, I reckon most will be coming from Heathrow and Gatwick after flying in. The reds coming in from Norway and mainland Europe will be flying in direct to John Lennon

Yeah, we can't go gung-ho against Brighton away, but there'll be more confidence about after last week's win, Moyes continued to emphasise creating chances in the press conference.

I like the way he's speaking about Calvert-Lewin, praising his performance but challenging him to score goals when the chances come.

We do need to be watchful of injuries with McNeil and Broja gone for a while, we definitely need more players in.

I reckon we can get a score draw or a win today. I expect us to create a few chances and get a goal or two.

Let's stick one over on Fatboy Slim. He was always crap.

Disappointing injury news but most clubs are in the same boat. The difference is the strength in depth which only a few money clubs can afford.

Last week was a good performance against another off-form team but today at Brighton will be different and the defence needs to come up big especially in containing Bitouma on the wing.
