James Tarkowski set a new record for Everton following his appearance in the 1-1 draw against Brentford at Gtech Stadium on Wednesday. It was the Blues’ vice-captain’s 103rd Premier League game in a row, overtaking the previous best set by Joleon Lescott.

Since joining Everton in July 2022, he has been one of the first names on the teamsheet for his managers and has been ever-dependable. However, a lot of his record-breaking appearance streak, is also down to luck, admits the 32-year-old.

“I've been a bit fortunate to not pick up an injury in that time or I’ve been able to manage things I have picked up and been able to get through games,” said Tarkowski.

“I’ve not been suspended, either, which helps and I’ve also had managers who have picked me for all those games. There’s a bit of luck involved but it’s not easy to play in the Premier League so to play 103 in a row, it’s something I’m really proud of.

“I've had periods where I've not been in a team at different clubs and every chance I can get to play, I want to be out on that pitch. So if I can get out there, I will do. And as I said, it takes a manager's belief and trust in me to put me out there in the situations which I've been fortunate enough to have.”

Tarkowski is currently in the United Arab Emirates for a warm-weather training camp along with the rest of the players. With no cup action, the Toffees will enjoy an extended break before returning to action against Wolves on March 8.

The break is going to be essential for the squad, feels the vice-captain, as the players have accumulated a lot of minutes since the Christmas break. Manager David Moyes is also working with a barebones squad at the moment given the number of injuries.

“The Christmas and January period can be quite difficult with a lot of games,” said the defender.

“We've been on a nice run recently so it's a little bit of mix of rest and recovery but also getting the lads together and working on the grass in warmer weather. I've always valued the importance of coming away on these camps because, sometimes at the training ground, so much goes on in a day that you don't really get much time to spend time with the lads and integrate so I love the chance for team bonding.”

Tarkowski has been a great servant especially when he was a free agent. Great to see Cunha missing next Saturday night, he totally lost the plot, kicked the player on the ground and then head butted him and wouldn’t leave the field, and that’s his second time this season, so could get an extended ban, which will definitely cost Wolves, a headless chicken.
