Everton target Nuamah as Caqueret turns down chance of Goodison move

Everton have reportedly had an approach for Olympique Lyonnais midfielder Maxence Caqueret knocked back by the player as Kevin Thelwell seeks further midfield reinforcements.

The 24-year-old was one of the Lyon players the Blues were looking at as they exploit both the connection with prospective buyer John Textor, whose Eagle Football Group holds a majority stake in Lyon, and the Ligue 1 club's need to offload players to ease FFP concerns.

Everton are in advanced talks to bring Orel Mangala back to the Premier League from Les Gones and it is not clear if they were targeting Caqueret as an additional signing.

Regardless, GFFN are reporting that the player has rejected a move to Goodison Park but the Toffees have also reportedly lodged an enquiry about Lyon winger Ernest Nuamah who is also interesting the likes of Fulham, Leicester City and Nottingham Forest ahead of the deadline.

The French club are said to be looking for upwards of €30 for the Ghanaian, however, which could put him beyond Thelwell's budget.

I would be happy to contribute to the €30. Just send me the account details.

€30 John, so about £27.

He's 20 and lacks experience — plus do we need another left-footed right-winger?

I doubt the club (Dyche) would consider such a player for €30M. Lyon only bought him in July for €28M.

If we took anyone from them I'd prefer one of the strikers.

Is this all to do with simple lazy journalism because Textor owns Lyon? Surely we don't need these players.

Right now, I'd take Ings off West Ham for a season and play him with Calvert-Lewin and sell Beto if we can.

Mark @ 4,

Ings ain't what they used to be? :-)

We've been knocked back by Max Cack?

This feels like a low point in our story.

Love that, Derek, #5.

Really made me laugh.

Mark (4), you'd really turn your nose up at the possibility of reinforcements for any part of our threadbare squad?
There is nothing that indicates we are simply ignoring bolstering other positions.

How many players can you change in a game? Do only strikers determine how games go? Imagine the luxury of instructing your midfielders to give everything they've got for the first 50 - 60 minutes because you can then replace then en masse with equally good alternatives.

At the moment we are heavily reliant on Gana and Iroegbunam. Either of those injured and we start to look bereft of options.

Textor would be barmy not to do anything he could to preserve our top-level status if he genuinely wants to buy us. Are we looking at a conspiracy theory that thinks he's feigning interest in us just so that Lyon can get rid of their deadwood?

Dan, is it similar to the ‘Mahna Mahna' song, cause I'm finding too many syllables in Nuamah!

Mangala is worth a punt if the wages are sensible. Forest fans rated him and, because he has Premier League experience, Dyche might actually have fewer excuses to not play him.

A 20-year-old winger from a relegated side with no Premier League credentials? Yes at €30. Not if you put an 'M' next to it. We can't afford those sums anyway, not if we plan to keep that which we must keep.

Have they not got a decent right-back? Ideally one who can also cover at left-back? Or now we have committed to paying Young for another 12 months, are we obliged to play him?

Very good, Derek, and you are correct but I think a striker is key.

And Si, I would happily take 20 midfielders but as a priority, I think we need strikers — not midfielders.

We desperately need midfield reinforcements, Mark, but not at prices that are going to cause us big problems next season.

I think both these rumours are more non-starters.

The loan of Mangala, with it's obligation to buy next summer looks to me like Textor raising money to fund Lyon at the expense of Everton.

Even if it is short team pain, £34M is a joke surely. He only cost them £28M a few weeks ago.

I remember under Peter Johnson we bought Tony Thomas from Tranmere for £900,000. The perception being Tranmere needed the dosh to stay afloat.

Looks like Godfrey might be available. Atalanta reportedly looking to shift him before he unpacks.

The shelf life of managers and players these days is shorter than a hooker's skirt.

We need to sign a winger in Earnest !

Jack #14

I think that player was the goalkeeper Steve Simonsen and it was a record fee for a goalie, circa 1998.
