Could Brighton's Tariq Lamptey meet Everton's needs at right-back?

| 07/11/2024 20comments  |  Jump to last

With Everton's need for a new right-back all too obvious, the link has been made with Tariq Lamptey, who has expressed a desire to leave Brighton & Hove Albion and Everton are said to have already expressed interest in signing him.

Injuries have severely restricted Lamptey’s game time this season, he’s played just 10 minutes of Premier League football so far, coming off the bench in Brighton’s 2-2 draw at home to Wolves on 26 October.

The Ghana international, who has been capped 11 times, is on a contract at the Amex Stadium that is due to expire at the end of the season, with the claim being made that he’d prefer to stay in England if he can, despite the likes of Juventus also showing interest in him.

But Lamptey is only a diminutive 5ft 4in tall and is at an obvious disadvantage against taller and more robust physical specimens that are increasingly dominating the Premier League. It remains to be seen whether Everton will actually make an approach for him in January.

The lad got a ton of good reviews when he broke through a couple of seasons ago. Pace and a willingness to get forward his prime assets.

A lot of question marks for me. Derailed by long-term injury and significant lack of height an unresolvable defensive problem, has he come back with all his talents intact, and was he ever that reliable in the defensive role? How lofty are his ambitions? Would he see us as a step up, a better opportunity?

I'm not worried about his robustness though. He looks solid enough and has the advantage (on the ground) of a low centre of gravity.

“How lofty are his ambitions?”

Nice one, lahdee dah gunner Cooper, but harsh…

Wasn't he a target of ours a couple of years back?

Good player.

We have Patterson and young Dixon, plus Seamus can still put a shift in.

If this lad is any good, and I'd be wary of signing another crock.

For a full-back, height doesn't bother me. Leighton Baines was hardly a giant.

Again, it's all speculation that we can only guess about.

We've talked about this guy on and off for years, and he certainly dazzled people when he first broke through in 2020, but over six seasons since then he has started only 47 games and missed 63 through injury, per Transfermarkt.

And for all his pace and skill, he is unproductive in attack -- he has exactly one career goal and 8 assists in those six seasons.

In our 1-1 draw at their house last February (the game where we gave up a 95th-minute equalizer to 10 men), Lamptey was anonymous except for one terrific clearance off the line, and he was subbed off after an hour.

I'd say he's a flop. Hard to imagine our new owner being interested.

2 or 3 seasons ago, it would have been a no-brainer but injuries and lack of playing time have taken their toll, so it would be a No for me.

We missed golden opportunities with Denzil Dumfries and Wan-Bissaka, who were both bargains imo.

I would have loved to get Antonee Robinson back too but I doubt he would come to us now – nor would Fulham want to lose him.

If this was 4 seasons ago, it would have been a Yes… but not now. His injury record speaks for itself. We do not need another sick note – move on.

Kyle Walker-Peters will be a freebie come next summer. He would be a much better signing imho.

Out of contract in the summer and with a history of injuries, he sounds just like our type of player.

No, no, no!

We have two fucking right-backs who spiteful Dyche won't fucking play... Get rid of Dyche!!!

He doesn't seem like a Dyche type of player, imo.

If I was Patterson and I'm not fit, I'd be handing in a transfer request because frankly he's coming up to three years at Everton and his career is done.

Bobby @8,

Who are the 2 fullbacks that spiteful Dyche won't play?

If he was sacked, would the new manager be spiteful for not picking the 2 full-backs who replace the ones that spiteful Dyche didn't pick?

Rob 11.

Dixon, Patterson these are the two that spiteful Dyche won't play. Even injured Seamus is in the Ireland squad

Dennis...

But very much an Everton player. sign him up and put him in the infirmary for six months. Hell, he'll be like a new signing come BMD.

Another injury-prone right-back?

Yeah, go on then… why not?

Coleman is too old.

Patterson is always injured and may not be good enough.

Dixon we actually know nothing about, he needs a loan.

Lamptey definitely has the quality, and should get better as he gets older. I'd be keen on this signing, but the obvious caveat is his injury record.

We're going to need around 10 new players though, and experienced Premier League players with room to improve and no transfer fee are not to be sniffed at.

I take guidance from Mike @ 4. Looked good years ago but not for us now.

Adding on, I was impressed by Dixon vs Spurs. I'd like to see him given a few starts.

Forget the loans. They're usually a heap of shit.

I'd like to add that we need to get some balls (sorry ladies) into this club, take some chances and try to make a difference rather than defend the indefensible all of the time.

After 70 years of supporting our beloved club, I think I have seen it all and the last 5 years or so have been so gutless, it breaks my heart.

Lamptey seemed like an exciting player, a few seasons ago.

Everton have been loaning and buying players of an alleged quality, under market rate, with associated risk, because of the financial position the club finds itself in.

I would hope that this behaviour would stop, with the impending ownership change. Even if it is going to take longer than anticipated I’d hope that the club might get loaned more money by the prospective owners - assuming they are confident of the sale going through.

So I don’t really understand what basis there is for this rumour.

Lewis, the Friedkins have been running Roma on a shoestring for a few seasons and we are still in financial trouble.

Seems likely we'll remain on the hunt for low cost / value and Lamptey, being out of contract shortly, offers that. He's not top class but such is life. He's better than what we've got and we could do a lot worse.
