Everton are closing in on signing Tyler Dibling from Southampton as the Toffees’ summer-long search for a right winger seems to be coming to an end.
Developments on a deal for the 19-year-old took place quickly. Reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has also given his trademark “Here we go” for the deal!
“Verbal agreement at £42M plus sell-on clause to Southampton, long-term deal for Dibling agreed back in July,” Romano tweeted.
An imminent agreement has also been reported by David Ornstein of The Athletic, Richard Jolly of The Independent, Paul Joyce of The Times and Sky Sports News among others.
“The proposed package for Dibling will be worth just over £40M ($54.2M), with the clubs still finalising the details and structure of the deal, which will include a 20% sell-on clause for Southampton,” stated Ornstein in The Athletic.
“Personal terms have been agreed in principle but need finalising and, if all goes to plan, the 19-year-old will undergo a medical early next week.”
Everton had previously seen three bids rejected by Southampton for their teenage winger, one of the most highly rated attacking prospects in England. It is believed that the Blues had pulled out of the deal over a discrepancy in valuations between the two clubs.
However, the Saints have lowered their demands since then, allowing the Toffees to return to the negotiating table.
Dibling was left out of Will Still’s squad for Southampton’s first two matches in the Championship but played the final few minutes in the 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town recently.
He made 33 Premier League appearances last season and scored two goals.
Dibling is expected to slot straight into David Moyes’s starting XI, given that the squad does not have a right winger at the moment. Charly Alcaraz, Dwight McNeil and Iliman Ndiaye have deputised in that role with little to no success following the departures of loanees Jack Harrison and Jesper Lindstrom.
When the transfer is made official, Dibling will become Everton’s eighth signing of the summer after the club already secured the arrivals of Thierno Barry, Carlos Alcaraz, Adam Aznou, Mark Travers, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Tom King and Jack Grealish.

Their asking price has come down significantly and both parties are much closer to an agreement. Talks are continuing. [@_pauljoyce

An agreement in principle includes £6M add-ons which are easily achievable on appearances, and a 20% sell-on clause.
5 Posted 22/08/2025 at 19:16:51
This is an extremely unhelpful headline. Nothing now can happen til Monday… where Everton and Spurs are concerned, that's an eternity.
I have seen this film before.
6 Posted 22/08/2025 at 19:17:26
Patience will be needed, he's only 19 and wasn't even first choice in a poor Southampton team at times but he looks to have the tools to make it near the very top. Exciting.
7 Posted 22/08/2025 at 19:20:15
Kevin, nothing now can happen till Monday? Why's that? Banker's hours?
8 Posted 22/08/2025 at 19:22:53
Now let's have a quality right-back, Everton.
9 Posted 22/08/2025 at 19:23:17
10 Posted 22/08/2025 at 19:33:55
Smells like the Sigurdsson fiasco to me.
11 Posted 22/08/2025 at 19:35:32
This kid's fantastic.

Press: "Moyes, you must be delighted to have made a big signing."
Moyes: "Eh? What, the wee lad from Southampton. He is just a boy. He's no ready for first team."

16 Posted 22/08/2025 at 19:45:43
Delighted that we are getting the Dibling transfer done, just a right back and some loans to pad the squad out, I still think we'll sign another right sided winger just in case of injuries etc
17 Posted 22/08/2025 at 19:48:10
18 Posted 22/08/2025 at 19:50:54
I really wanted us to get young Dibbling.
19 Posted 22/08/2025 at 19:52:15
However, it's all well and good signing for the future, but if we haven't won a game in the first half dozen, then we're probably in a relegation fight and under pressure.
20 Posted 22/08/2025 at 19:52:38
21 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:11:00
It's really exciting getting Dibling... well done, Everton.
22 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:19:59
Now Bissouma, Justin, Vardy and Jeremy Bowen and were sorted. Plus Richarlison and 1-2 more loanees.

24 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:27:28
25 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:28:07
Didn't expect that to happen. :-)
Happy about this… but we need more signings to be competitive!
26 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:30:28
If there was a pill introduced to cure cancer tomorrow... someone on ToffeeWeb would be moaning about all the redundant equipment.
27 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:31:25
28 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:31:46
Once Moyes and Irvine have got hold of this lad, he will be scared to pass the halfway line.
29 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:31:58
30 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:32:14
I wouldn't want him making his debut against Mansfield, they'd kick him off the pitch.
31 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:33:27
It does sound like a lot of money, but if he proves to be a decent Premier League standard player that we get 7/8 years of service out of, then it'll be money well spent.
And if he develops then we'll make a tidy profit on him.
32 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:34:02
What amazing examples of youth did he hold back exactly? Keen to hear about all the young world beaters we had. Or have now.
33 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:35:48
34 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:37:44
35 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:38:12
Pace, balance and can lift his head up.
36 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:39:18
37 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:39:48
38 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:41:17
At 19, he could be a couple of years off his potential, so patience is going to be needed by the "faithful". Hopefully he can show enough to do a job on the right.
I wouldn't be against another right-sided player on loan as cover, the experienced been around but solid type who could do a job as we need it. Right-back and an enforcer in midfield please, now, Everton!
39 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:42:09
40 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:44:28
Also, whoever plays right back is going to have a job on their hands because Dibling doesn't do a great deal of defending.
41 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:49:12
Looks as though Everton pulled the trigger because we were worried about Spurs or Palace coming in. Because for what we're paying this could have been agreed a few weeks ago.
42 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:50:00
43 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:50:08
Expensive but does seem a bit special, hope it work out.
45 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:51:37
46 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:54:17
Unlike Everton's transfer working group
47 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:54:54
Apparently, we don't work on Bank Holidays.
48 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:55:20
But to the current version of Everton, with our status and credibility shredded, he is worth it.
49 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:56:14
51 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:58:48
Out of all the wingers linked, this is the one that I wanted.
52 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:01:42
Oh and 3 points on Sunday. COYB
53 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:02:10
I hope that Moyyes fully realises the expectation for him to deliver will rise significantly now.
Looks like we are building a side for the future or at least looking to bank an investment.
54 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:05:23
My concern though is whether he is £45M better than Harrison Armstrong.
55 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:05:25
Two completely different players, Neil.
56 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:06:42
For that money, you'd hope for a Kanchelskis, 95-96.
Please don't say he needs time to bed in. Let's hope he doesn't end up being John Oster, 97-98, skilled but a lightweight with no end product.
57 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:08:11
The fee is the only question mark. Buying young guarantees some resale but Dibling feels like a bit more of a gamble than some young players.
This could be a watershed moment for us. The moment when we signed a player who went on to be something really special.
Or it could be a new level of disaster.
But at least there's hope again.
Now we need to figure out the full backs because they've got some great talent ahead of them.
58 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:10:08
59 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:14:59
Almost past caring about the money because all the fees this window seem to be plucked out of the air. Look what the scum got for Darwen N.
60 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:20:36
The money is what it is, we want young hungry progressing players then you have to take z gamble.
I'm hoping they have crunched all his numbers and stats, it's a big fee for a young lad, he's OK putting in a decent shift and Southampton getting a draw, he's stepping up now. He needs to be ready, hit the ground running and show what he's got.
We are crying out for a bit of flair and pacell. All he has to do is literary beat a man on the outside and stick a cross in and he's improved us.
Welcome Tyler. The Everton waddle!!
61 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:34:19
It's a win win.
Well done, Moyesy, for pushing the Board.
62 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:35:40
63 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:35:53
Shame some of the miserable auld arses in here won't join in the joy if we pull off a result tomorrow.
64 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:36:09
What are you on about in your second paragraph?
Why has Dibing got to be immediately at Kanchelskis levels? He's 19 years old.
From memory, Kanchelskis was about 27 years old when he signed. He was a European class player who was at his peak. He'd cost about £70M today. £45M isn't that big these days anyway. It's just big for us.
Get a grip.
65 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:36:45
66 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:39:13
Otherwise, we could quite easily in the same boat as them. Urgency is the key!
67 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:40:14
I also think he's a little quicker than some realise and he's certainly not lightweight like John Oster!
But he will need some time to bed in, like any 19-year-old in a new team would. He'll make mistakes and try to dribble when he shouldn't. He'll lose the ball in bad spots and won't track back as much as Harrison did. But he'll also get the fans off their feet at times. He's a £100M player in the making if developed properly.
68 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:46:01
First home game at Bramley-Moore Dock? We'll wing it.
Incompetence of the highest order.
69 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:48:15
His playmaking is about progression, moving the team upfield, and creating opportunities where none seemed to exist. Exactly what we been missing!
70 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:51:22
No, bring back Tony Marsh. ToffeeWeb Gold.
71 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:51:23
Both superb players who Moyes knows well.
72 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:51:48
If he is a genuine winger rather than better as a Number 10, then great. His skills mean he could do both I imagine. Also great.
We seem to have surprising depth at the Number 10 position, playmaker. Grealish, McNeil, Ndiaye are all arguably best in that role. Can we get those 3 and Dibling all on the pitch at the same time? I suspect too attack focused and lacking defensive strength and bite and aggression in the middle of the park. KDH and Gana both are starters when fit in the middle I expect, so likely McNeil benched.
One Up front: Barry, Beto or Chermiti (draw straws, no clue which will fire on any day)
Number 10: Grealish
Ndiaye (LM), Dewsbury-Hall (CM), Gana (CM), Dibling (RM).
If these can gel and become a well oiled unit, game on. UTFT.
73 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:52:51
He never did much but I liked the fact that he was trying to do things, and I liked the way he was getting angry with himself and a little bit spiky with the opposition, when the things he was trying never quite came off.
Its a very big fee for a young player, but looking at a few little quips, he seems to be skilful on the ball, should add a lot of craft, and he also looks to be very aggressive when he has got the ball at his feet.
Another very important aspect is that hes another signing that should give everyone a lift, and because its been that long since we have had it, hopefully hes going to be a player who helps bring the feel-good factor, back into the crowd 🤞

Finally, some news I can get excited about — and it's got my blood pumping a whole lot quicker than usual at this time in the morning.
Finally, we have a right-winger and one with very high promise. Three or four more players of good quality, especially right-back, and the transfer window looks a whole lot better.
Credit where it's due, so kudos to the transfer team for getting this one over the line.
82 Posted 22/08/2025 at 22:15:28
It isn't over the line. It's just being reported we've come to a verbal agreement with Southampton over a fee and verbal terms with the player.
Nothing is guaranteed at this point. Sorry to piss on your adobo at 5 am!
83 Posted 22/08/2025 at 22:18:42
I can't wait to see how he does.
84 Posted 22/08/2025 at 22:22:28
Bit of a gamble… yes. Do we stick and regret? No, twist and go for him, Blues — tomorrow — get it done!!!
85 Posted 22/08/2025 at 22:29:39
Give him a 5-year deal.
86 Posted 22/08/2025 at 22:32:16
Given that Everton are almost impotent in an attacking sense, I see Dibling as a right-wingback – but not a starter – as Grealish found out.
We need intensity from the start… but Moyes doesn't seem to generate that.
87 Posted 22/08/2025 at 22:32:30
At £42Million, I hope you had your tongue firmly in cheek with that remark.
88 Posted 22/08/2025 at 22:36:06
Everton are closing in on the £40m signing of Southampton midfielder Tyler Dibling.
The England Under-21 international has been the subject of three offers from the Toffees this summer that were rejected.
But sources have told BBC Sport that talks between the two clubs have now restarted.
Dibling, 19, has attracted interest from a number of Premier League clubs after scoring twice in 33 appearances last season.
Right back, please – then I'll be happy.
89 Posted 22/08/2025 at 22:36:11
Daft? You bet!
90 Posted 22/08/2025 at 22:37:27
With the signing of Grealish, Alcaraz, Dewsbury-Hall and hopefully Dibling, it feels like in 2025 we have at last injected the squad with some much-needed attacking quality.
91 Posted 22/08/2025 at 22:39:08
Not as daft as Leicester City winning the Premier League in 2016.
92 Posted 22/08/2025 at 22:40:31
Only the price is agreed, which leaves time for other clubs to gazump the deal after seeing what happened with Eze this week and Sky showing similar gazumps over the years.
I hope Southampton have taken down payment and spent it, or someone buys Tyler earplugs just in case.
93 Posted 22/08/2025 at 22:46:44
Phew, thank god you came along and stopped us all actually feeling positive about actually signing proper talent the likes we haven't seen for years.
How about popping a champagne cork, you miserable fuckers!
94 Posted 22/08/2025 at 22:56:54
Am I missing something?
95 Posted 22/08/2025 at 23:12:41
Deal done, according to a few sites on YouTube, medical taking place over the weekend.
A great signing... more needed though!
96 Posted 22/08/2025 at 23:23:01
97 Posted 22/08/2025 at 23:56:25
98 Posted 22/08/2025 at 23:57:21
So now we have two wingers playing out of position. Grealish is right-footed and plays on the left, so he can cut inside, which limits the crosses to a striker. Dibling, on the other hand, is left-footed, and prefers to play on the right, so he can cut inside, which, sorry to repeat myself, limits the crosses to a striker.
99 Posted 22/08/2025 at 00:04:03
100 Posted 22/08/2025 at 00:04:34
Not saying Dibling is not a good player. But I feel the £6M add-on and the 20% sell-on clause is really not a good deal. This is a high-risk, high-reward punt. Now we take on the risk… yet the reward is cut way less.
101 Posted 23/08/2025 at 00:07:05
I can go back to being disappointed if the deal doesn't go through.
102 Posted 23/08/2025 at 00:08:22
103 Posted 23/08/2025 at 00:27:56
Svein--Roger 69 and 77, those are among the most constructive posts of yours I have read. Get in.
About halfway through but was so excited I had to write something.
104 Posted 23/08/2025 at 00:31:21
105 Posted 23/08/2025 at 00:43:31
The beer tastes good tonight, eh?
106 Posted 23/08/2025 at 01:29:22
So I guess your question is: Why do we pick a similar type of winger on both sides? I think Moyes is thinking of his success with Bowen operating as an inverted right winger who cuts inside onto his powerful left foot to shoot or link up with teammates. Perhaps Moyes wants to replicate that?
107 Posted 23/08/2025 at 01:43:05
Not sure I understand we have paid over the odds. Didn't the bar codes pay £40M for Gordon who is a one-trick pony and possesses no natural trickery other than speed?
So I am thinking this is a fair price. Wish he was playing Sunday.
108 Posted 23/08/2025 at 02:18:24
It seems a lot but, if we can get enough quality in to get us in the top half of the table at £3M a place — 10 places higher gives us an extra £30M — plus if we are lucky and get the extra bodies in to earn a place in Europe, that generates even more.
Speculate to accumulate, TFG, please!
109 Posted 23/08/2025 at 02:59:55
Beto or McNeil to be sold.
110 Posted 23/08/2025 at 03:07:14
He's a reincarnation of Le Tissier. Seriously.
111 Posted 23/08/2025 at 03:13:54
Looks like John Oster, if Oster had ever filled out. Fortunately, Dibling has the build for a modern-day Premier League player.
I remember when we signed Oster and watching him in a pre-season game and thinking he played like Trevor Steven, lol!
112 Posted 23/08/2025 at 03:47:18
Hackney seems like a shrewd signing from Boro and will have sell-on value, but Bissouma is Prem ready which would appeal to Moyes.
I used to think Bissouma was amazing at Brighton and I thought he'd be a real coup for Spurs... But he has apparently had a lot of disciplinary problems at Spurs for arriving late for training, and Frank wants shut of him.
The biggest story coming out out of Spurs was Ange making a fuss of Bissouma in front of the first-team squad, saying he could be a leader and lead by example, and then Bissouma turned up late the next day.
Would Moyes take a £10-£15M punt on him??
There's also Soucek for a similar fee, who could chip in with a few goals.
113 Posted 23/08/2025 at 04:27:48
I'd never seen Oster but, based on reports, I remember being quite excited Kendall had unearthed another gem… Lol.
Likewise, I assumed we'd struck gold with Paul Holmes, John O'Kane and Gareth Farrelly – such was my youthful naivety and faith in Howard.
114 Posted 23/08/2025 at 04:56:20
With pace needed in the team, Soucek would offer the exact opposite. He can't even get into a very poor West Ham team.
115 Posted 23/08/2025 at 05:23:50
He's definitely overpriced.
116 Posted 23/08/2025 at 06:47:44
I don't think he will be straight in the starting line-up next week, even if then. Practically no pre-season, not training with the first-team squad, I think he will be assessed by Moyes and his coaching staff first.
Still, positive moves. It's taken longer than we would have wanted, but I think the club has stood its ground. "There is the offer, let us know when you want to talk." And by the reporting, Southampton came back to us with lower demands.
It sounds very TFG, not too dissimilar from the takeover, when they walked away initially.
117 Posted 23/08/2025 at 06:55:36
Hope to be proved wrong…
118 Posted 23/08/2025 at 07:41:46
Does Brenda win a prize?
" to fucking thick"... pot and kettle spring to mind.
119 Posted 23/08/2025 at 07:41:59
I remember when we bought Yakubu (£12M?) people were worrying it was way too much.
Dibling will be worth it, you'll see. Stop fretting, for fuck's sake!!!
120 Posted 23/08/2025 at 07:52:04
I'm a fan of Moyes but can see his shortcomings and the comments about Dibling sitting on the bench while he gets Premier League ready to play made me laugh out loud — I think there is a pretty good chance that is what will happen! :)
At least it won't be Harrison keeping him on the bench this season.
121 Posted 23/08/2025 at 07:54:43
Lots of players released and the players that have come in are all an upgrade.
It may be asking too much to get all positions covered in one window.
122 Posted 23/08/2025 at 07:55:03
We need to be patient, and ideally have another right-winger to rotate him with. The fans were short in patience on Fellaini, Moise Kean etc, which worries me as to will it work.
Getting in a player like Grealish to work with him is a good move in my opinion. Both will be on the same wavelength and will see the game quicker than perhaps others.
123 Posted 23/08/2025 at 08:16:38
124 Posted 23/08/2025 at 08:21:16
Forget the goals, assists. How many successful take-ons, key passes, expected successful dribbles, successful putting on of socks and looks of confusion does he currently have recorded?
125 Posted 23/08/2025 at 08:40:58
126 Posted 23/08/2025 at 08:42:10
It's like a weird kind of Stockholm Syndrome with the relegation zone.
127 Posted 23/08/2025 at 08:54:46
Everything is a crisis.
Last year I watched him play and thought he looked special - always hoped wed sign him but thought a Utd, Tottenham, Chelsea etc would sign him up. We should be delighted that a young prospect is keen to come to us and he could be something really special. Give him time as well - dont write him off. We are so bad at demanding instant results and performances - look at Branthwaite, after his loan to PSV and playing a full season of development there he came back and once he found his place he blossomed.
Lets also put everything in perspective. Despite the media, the league is not won or lost in game week 1. The old adage of the league shouldnt be looked at for at least 10 games still applies. And for Everton (along with half the other clubs in the prem) lets judge the transfer window and signings at the end of the month when it actually closes. Due to the nature of it always closing after the season starts we cant judge the team until mid Sept sadly.
Keep calm and carry on……
Oh, and remember the majestic new stadium we have now. There is so much to be positive about - just give it time folks.
For those attending tomorrow - back the team and the manager to the hilt and dont look for others to start the singing and the chants, everyone needs to take responsibility and drive us to victory. Remember there are thousands of us who are desperate to be there who havent got tickets so do it for us!
128 Posted 23/08/2025 at 08:54:50
Call me cynical. Hope I am very wrong.
129 Posted 23/08/2025 at 08:57:52
As someone said somewhere, how that would play out with the Rooney/Vardy situation would be interesting but we're bigger than that. Club first before personal stuff.
130 Posted 23/08/2025 at 09:10:35
Its reported that Crystal Palace agreed this deal with Southampton on Thursday then we jumped in and matched it.
Rumour has it that the CP Manager is livid.

Hospital staff and footballers work weekends and bank holidays, for fuck's sake!
I'd be more worried about Levy diving in after being humiliated by Arteta.

Maybe the kid had already agreed to sign for Everton and he had agreed to sit tight until Southampton were prepared to change their valuation.
Although it's just speculation, if it's true, I just hope he ends up having the same type of Everton career as the last player we high-jacked from Palace — but with a few trophies that the efforts of little Timmy Cahill deserved.

Other than a right-back, I would like a utility defender who can play any position across the back 4.
James Garner is doing a job at full back but I like him in midfield.
144 Posted 23/08/2025 at 11:09:59
He has a lot to contend with all at once, price tag, new teammates, high expectations from us, etc.
On the other hand, he might be a revelation and a natural and sail on without any bother at all. I very much hope so.
145 Posted 23/08/2025 at 11:50:16
Brilliant comment, I honestly think most of our fans would like us to go for the likes of Soucek etc.
This is a great signing if it comes off but let's give the kid time to bed in, we can't expect miracles. Now let's see if we can get 3 or 4 more in.
At last, things are beginning to look up.
146 Posted 23/08/2025 at 12:06:48
We can't blame Southampton for wanting the best deal either, if he turns out to be as good as predicted. we may have a bargain in today's ridiculously high priced world. After all, we more-or-less did the same with Branthwaite when a few were sniffing round.
I hope he turns out to be the player we believe he can become, the likes of Grealish and Ndiaye (although not much older) could be great mentors for him.
After Monday night's disappointing performance, and after seeing KDH in the flesh against Roma, where I thought he was 'class' he did not seem the player he was a few days before. Was it because the whole team was a mis-match, or was he playing in a different role ?
147 Posted 23/08/2025 at 12:28:04
Very exciting, though I'll believe it when the signing video hits my inbox!
148 Posted 23/08/2025 at 12:41:08
Get Vardy in asap!!!!!… Barry has to be given a run of games. He looks like more of the same to be honest but I'll give the big lad a chance.
150 Posted 23/08/2025 at 12:46:44
Can I just say I thought he was right-footed? We need another No 6; Hackney for £20M, a striker, and two full-backs please.
151 Posted 23/08/2025 at 12:51:10
Next please. I agree with those who back a freebie with Vardy. Good squad addition IMO.
Why is there so much negativity on here? Go buy a bottle of Monkey Shoulder to drown the sorrows!
152 Posted 23/08/2025 at 12:58:44
Seems expensive for a lad for the U-21s.
153 Posted 23/08/2025 at 13:04:44
Not my views, view of Saints supporting family.
We will need to give him time, forgive some mistakes and hopefully watch him blossom. Wouldn't be a bad idea to have another right-wing option as cover. He didn't play every game for Saints.
154 Posted 23/08/2025 at 13:06:34
In all fairness, a lot of excellent players have joined clubs outside the so-called Top 6.
Why didn't the Red Shite sign Bournemouth's left-back before them? Why didn't Arsenal keep Eze? They're just 2 examples.
I see City's left-back is off injured, Ake on, might scupper any deal, if we are interested.
155 Posted 23/08/2025 at 13:10:15
Depending on what value they place on Patterson, it was alleged Rangers wanted £25M for Igamane (they only paid around £1.7M) it could prove a decent and doable deal.
Beto could be sold on, probably at a loss, to accommodate. Still need a good midfielder (Hayden Hackney, Yves Bissouma) and a right-winger (Kubo, Fatawu, Fofana) and right-back (preferably one that can be used in a few positions).
Not asking a lot, am I? :-)
156 Posted 23/08/2025 at 13:12:47
Michael Keane's played as a false 5 for years, so anything is possible.
157 Posted 23/08/2025 at 13:14:04
The positives are he is the type of player profile we should be after, lots of upside, and most important he plays in a position we are desperate to fill.
The negatives are or may be, that our desperation has probably led us to overpay – I can tell you the Southampton fans think this is good business for them – and that in terms of skills, he is not known for tracking back and is very one-footed (left).
Hence the need for a really good right-back who can also overlap and cross becomes critical.
158 Posted 23/08/2025 at 13:17:07
I'm glad to be wrong. Cheers!
159 Posted 23/08/2025 at 13:52:46
2 PSR points deductions, repeated relegation struggles, not likely to continue as a going concern if we went down, absent owner and board, selling most players who had transfer value. Almost bought by 777 and Textor. Need I go on?
It is perfectly natural for supporters to be sceptical, anxious, stressed or outright annoyed at the slow progress of the transfer window and the terrible performances in pre-season and against Leeds.
And its not your place to tell them to think otherwise.

Perhaps a better mantra for the future is to call things exactly as they are, and demand better. Standards must improve.

James Justin picked up an injury so hasn't been playing. He also appears to be going to Leeds anyway.

Blimey, we've had decades of awful football — we should moan. There is nothing wrong with being ‘woke'.
174 Posted 23/08/2025 at 16:23:41
I, personally, am proud to be "woke" in this case.
175 Posted 23/08/2025 at 16:28:33
I tend to agree there with you, these are professionals, getting paid extremely well to play for, and hopefully entertain the paying fans. Who are increasingly getting charged more and more each season, whether it be tickets, merchandise, or whatever.
If you paid a lot of money to see a show or opera and they were absolutely dreadful, fluffing lines, wearing steel toe-capped boots for ballet, most would ask for a refund, or express their annoyance somehow. Why should football (in today's times) be any different?
176 Posted 23/08/2025 at 16:33:48
I consider myself ‘woke' too. I care about the club. I think I have been misunderstood.
The people who are eternally optimistic are great but in this case they are the reason we suffered the Moyes - Kenwright years of mediocrity. That wiped out Everton as contenders.
‘Woke' has been used incorrectly to describe them.
177 Posted 23/08/2025 at 16:37:49
Also, those Moyes - Kenwright years turned out to be far, far better than the subsequent more than a decade of relegation scrapping under a succession of different managers and a different owner.

182 Posted 23/08/2025 at 17:14:11
183 Posted 23/08/2025 at 17:16:55
Just consider its application to Everton, imagine we thought 'actually for this season, we're not going to bother with trying to discern who is the best, we are going to allocate who plays in the team according to quotas based on gender and race'.
What would the drop off be, 80%? Well in our wisdom, we've applied this khamikaze logic to our whole society. That's why a lot of people can't stand it. I remember Trudeau being asked why half his cabinet were women when they were only I think less than 30% of his MPs. "Cos it's 2015" he said.
On more important matters, we really need to get this Dibling medical done today. Waiting til Tuesday is just asking to be punched in the face. all these headlines, 'thttehham are a great club, we only want players who want to play for us'. And then late Monday night, rumours are circulating that Spurs have made a late move for Dibling'
Right.

I went to bed last night a wishy-washy-liberal. Reclassified, I popped to the shops.
There were 25,000 guys who still live with their mums shouting outside a flat just above Aldi where a guy from Somalia lived.
There, on his window, was a Blues sticker. I was worried but he wasn't when we chatted. "2-0" he reckoned. I saw his point.

Kenwright was still running the club until he walked away and left the club rudderless when there was a very real danger we would be relegated.
Moshiri bought the club but left it in the hands of a man who loved himself more than the club he insisted he cherished.

That's all I have to say about woke.
200 Posted 23/08/2025 at 21:05:06
I had the misfortune to have spent much of my youth living in the Woking area. As a bloke in a pub called The Old Stillage (affectionately known as The Old Stabbage) once said to me in the early '90s, "Wokin' is a one 'orse taahn and even the fuckin 'orse has left!"
He was right. It's a shithole.

So you're safe guys. Smiles!!!
202 Posted 24/08/2025 at 09:36:02
Anyhow, I hope we now get the Dibling deal over the line and look forward to seeing him in an Everton kit tearing defences apart!
203 Posted 24/08/2025 at 09:49:21
I am fully aware of all of that and I wasn't trying to defend Kenwright in any way.
Sadly, though, it is an indisputable fact that the Moyes - Kenwright years (which is what the original poster was talking about) were more "successful" (reasonably regular European qualification, cup final, semi-finals etc) than the following more than a decade of just about escaping relegation under a succession of managers, mostly playing far more dire football (in my view) than we played under Moyes Mark1.
204 Posted 24/08/2025 at 09:59:13
Another similar term, which annoys me a lot, is "snowflake" which is squarely aimed at the younger generation, who (rightly and naturally) have a different world-view and different expectations than us oldies!
205 Posted 24/08/2025 at 10:29:39
207 Posted 24/08/2025 at 11:13:34
Kendall signed some utter dross that summer. And this was in the shadow of Andy Gray on the brink of being appointed and his well publicised shopping list that included Dwight Yorke.
Don Hutchison was the only player that he signed that was premier league standard and it was probably the signing of Hutchison that saved us that season.
Unsworth, Hinchcliffe, Speed and Stuart were all moved on and within a couple of weeks we had teenagers in the team.
How we survived that season, it's a mystery.
210 Posted 24/08/2025 at 11:46:09
I can take getting beat if we have a go, but I can't abide performances like last Monday, where we just turn up and play for a draw and only start trying to score once we go behind.
We've seen plenty of them under Moyes.
211 Posted 24/08/2025 at 11:53:19
The Moyes and Kenwright years were more successful than anything we have had since, even though the biggest thing that happened during that era was a distinct lowering of standards, matched only by a complete change in our overall ambition.
I'm looking forward to going to our new stadium today, and pray that it's the start of a completely different era for Everton, hopefully one that is befitting of our distant past.
212 Posted 24/08/2025 at 12:37:37
In respect of the amount Moyes was paid, I am pretty sure that at least some of the managers we had subsequently were also paid absolute fortunes (Koeman and Ancelotti for example) and still managed to achieve less than Moyes did, playing, in my view, worse football for the most part.
Does that mean I was satisfied with not winning anything under Moyes? No, far from it. And I was also pretty sceptical about getting him back.
I was pleasantly surprised at the results last season and the (for the most part) much improved play compared with Dyche.
I guess, the point I'm trying to make is that we (the fans) don't get to choose our owners or our managers, so we just need to get behind whoever is here and hope that something clicks (like Kendall).
213 Posted 24/08/2025 at 12:42:22
I must take issue with you about Moyes lowering standards. Quite the opposite is true – we were in relegation scraps before he joined (Mike Walker and that ex-rangers scottish bloke who I can't remember the name of, now).
Moyes set about successfully lowering the age of the squad, binning Gascoigne and Ginola, and getting us up the table, challenging for Europe and playing better football.
Again, this is all there to be seen in the record books.
214 Posted 24/08/2025 at 12:50:38
I feel the word ‘woke' has been hijacked by the ‘right' to mean some of those negative things you mention, when it was coined by people who considered themselves woke to mean something positive.
The specific policies you refer to are a much bigger debate that I don't think we'll bother with here, but I do believe there is merit in deliberately aiming to cultivate a diverse workforce. When choosing people on ‘merit', merit can be hard to judge, subjective and based on characteristics that favour certain groups over others. I'll stop there, otherwise I'm properly starting the debate that I said I wouldn't.
And there are more relevant things happening today for this website! I'm ‘stuck' on holiday with no chance of watching it unfortunately, so will be a bit of a phone watcher for much of the afternoon.

He's half-decent, no more, but it makes the Dibling fee look reasonable tbh.
222 Posted 25/08/2025 at 17:32:32
To me Dibling looks a much better prospect than Strand Larsen who seems a bit gangly.
223 Posted 25/08/2025 at 18:02:14
He then walked away when bigger money was offered, did he really think he was good enough to manage a club like United, after just three or four months there he was described as “ bobbins” I had to look that up it was an old Lancashire saying meaning dogshite, well that might have been a bit strong but when he went there he brought his own training staff and got rid of all Fergusons team that worked out well he never lasted a season—- the job was far too big for him but his ego thought he could do it— he couldnt along with some lesser teams but hes back here now and I hope he does well because I never want Everton to fail no matter who is the manager.
224 Posted 25/08/2025 at 18:21:31
Giggs reckoned he had been promised the job and the club owed him, especially Ferguson (but we will not go there).
Those players made it difficult for Moyes, he was on a loser from the start.
We all know these days what Giggs was really like.
226 Posted 25/08/2025 at 18:33:10
227 Posted 25/08/2025 at 18:40:09
I think Moyes was abit unlucky at United. They were in the decline and still are now.
David Gill left with Ferguson.
They havent really recovered since.
I doubt Moyes wanted Distin to pass to Suarez in that semi final.
229 Posted 25/08/2025 at 18:50:57
I know I didnt want him to play Mariane (?) Gueye for 62 minutes and come out for the second half with the intent of holding on to a 1-0 lead against a very poor Liverpool team, one weak shot in that half and Liverpool playing their third choice goalkeeper—— as a mate said to me at the end of that game “ We could have wrote the script for the match and how it would materialise wed seen it that often in Derby games.
230 Posted 25/08/2025 at 19:15:31
I don't think he was unlucky, I think he was out of his depth.
Man Utd have never returned to winning league titles but, as Dave says, they've picked up a couple of trophies.
In my opinion, their biggest decline was not winning the league again between 1967 until 1993 and getting relegated in-between.
231 Posted 25/08/2025 at 19:25:48
Still remember Sylvain shouting “Fuuuck”. Horrible. We were better than them up to then.
233 Posted 25/08/2025 at 19:36:55
How a bloke who has only ever got to the quarter-finals of the European cup. Won a third-rate European competition and averaged about 7th-8th place finishes in 11 years here previously is good enough for a club that have never got beyond the quarter-finals of the European cup. Won a third-rate European competition and averaged 8.15 place for the entire 20th century is beyond anyone's comprehension.
He completely ruined the club last time around and he'll probably do it again.
234 Posted 25/08/2025 at 19:48:25
I think Man Utd haven't got past the quarterfinals of the Champions League since?
I really can't be arsed to get onto an argument about it, however.
Enjoy your evening.

That doesn't change the point I was making - he definitely improved us during his first time with us and is already doing so again, second time around. It is literally on the record for all to see.
That doesn't mean he gets a free pass and we need to be winning stuff again - I hope we do it under Moyes, not for him, but for the club and fans.

From David Ornstein:
Everton close to agreement with Southampton for Tyler Dibling. Proposed deal just over £40m + sell-on to #SaintsFC & personals done in principle; all needs finalising. If goes to plan #EFC medical early next week.
@TheAthleticFC after @ElBobble
