The only moves confirmed so far on a hugely disappointing Deadline Day are outward, with Youssef Chermiti securing a permanent transfer to Glasgow Rangers, the transfer fee understood to start at £8M, with £2M add-ons.
The 21-year-old, who was behind Beto and Thierno Barry in the pecking order for leading the line, was left out of the squad for the EFL Cup game against Mansfield Town as he looked to confirm his departure from the club after two largely fruitless years.
Everton signed Chermiti from Sporting CP in 2023 for a reported fee of £14M, including add-ons. But Chermiti struggled for game time, and despite being a highly rated prospect by some, injuries hampering his ongoing development and he has struggled for game time, first under Sean Dyche, and then under David Moyes.
Chermiti, brought in as a striker with great promise, made 24 appearances for the Blues, most of them being cameos off the bench, without scoring a single goal.
"He has got a good chance of going on loan,” the Everton manager said in the pre-match press conference before facing Wolves on Saturday. But the discussions with Rangers eventually homed in on a permanent transfer.
A permanent move away is likely to be seen as beneficial for all concerned at this stage of his career. Chermiti posted this message on social media:
“I want to leave a message to everyone who was part of my journey at Everton. It was a short chapter, but a very important one for me, where I grew not only as a player but also as a person. I’m truly grateful to the fans who always supported me and believed in me, both on and off the pitch. Your passion and commitment are something I will always carry with me.
“I leave with good memories, lessons learned, and moments that will stay with me. Now it is time to move forward with the same dedication and hunger to keep improving. Thank you, Everton.”

From all the reports I read based in Lisbon at that time, they were all casting doubt over his ability to do it in England, clearly proven right now.
3 Posted 01/09/2025 at 21:03:40
It hasn't been a success from anybody's perspective has it, but Thelwell still believes there's a player in there. I believe we inserted a sell-on clause clawback.

Chermiti is another example of a transfer failure. It borders on criminal these days to buy and sell a young fella like him at a loss. Even worse for him, he's heading off to Scotland's laughing-stock.

And some wanted to keep him on...

I disagree with this. The lad was injured for most of his time here. I'm sure he didn't want to be injured
We won't make a loss on him if he does well and we get a couple of million on any profit he makes.
'Criminal' is when we sign players like Gbamin for £25M plus £65k a week wages and he leaves on a free.
Many many more examples of this kind of transfer.

It's not the '70s.

Chermiti was in a relegation squad and got injured as well. During his time with Everton, he was never going to get the ball played to him as he would have at Sporting.
Everton was a bad move for him development-wise; Rangers might be a bit better. Someone who'd just seen the money. I would have stayed in Lisbon. Once he gets Arctic conditions in Glasgow, he will think the same.

He should try the deep fried Mars bars and chips with Daddy's Sauce (broon sauce) — Glaswegian haute cuisine!

We have Braiden Graham.
15 Posted 01/09/2025 at 21:30:06
I'd be very surprised if he doesn't succeed up there. And if he does start performing we'll get another £2m and pretty much break even.
Moyes clearly doesn't rate him, or else it would have been straight loan with a view to integrate him into, or around the first team next summer along with Armstrong.

Looks like Ndiaye will be used if there's injuries to Beto and Barry.

Needs to play at a lower level of football and then progress from there.
21 Posted 01/09/2025 at 22:28:56
Realistically none of our under-21 players are good enough for the bench, but that's why we should have brought someone in to replace Chermiti, then we wouldn't have ridiculous shouts about Braiden Graham.

Anyhow, not liking this deal at all, mostly due to the distressed price tag and giving up on the potential, but Chermiti is not the first one, and won't be the last one, who incurred Moyes' rumoured wrath (for "not training hard enough"): when that happens, the players' price tag would plummet faster than the Tech Stocks in Nasdaq.
Kudos to Thelwell's opportunistic raid of acquiring a distressed asset on the cheap that he knows very well of.

Id have preferred a loan to see if he can come good but obviously were still operating on a very tight budget. What can you do?
Hopefully we can start buying a higher volume of players like this, loaning developing and trading them for profit as other clubs do to ease PSR and generate funds for bigger transfers.
I wouldnt be surprised to see Graham debut this season - but just a few minutes here or there. Agree with Ryan that Sherif and Okoronkwo are nowhere near Prem standard.
As ever the answer to most searching questions about our squad snd transfer business is money. Although I do think weve overstocked centre mid at the strange expense of the flanks.
26 Posted 02/09/2025 at 09:46:42
Must mean he's just not expected to become good enough anymore.Good luck to the lad anyway.

Amusing how TW posters can't resist a chance to vent their prejudices no matter what the topic.
28 Posted 02/09/2025 at 12:47:41
With amortisation his book value was £5.25M as his 2nd anniversary has well and trully been and gone so technically and for the purposes of the all important financial accounts the club have sold him at an initial £2.75M profit.
Nor do we need to pay Sporting CP any money as we sold him for less than the original transfer fee.
29 Posted 02/09/2025 at 13:12:19
I think when we bought him, his intrinsic value to us, or so we thought at the time, was the amount we agreed to pay for him, which let's say was £11½M.
Now, it's 2 years later and, with a young developing prospect, you would reasonably expect his value to increase, not decrease. But we sold him for less than we bought him, hence the loss.
£11.5M – £8M equals a loss of £3.5M.
Amortisation is a meaningless bookkeeping exercise that has nothing whatsoever to do with a player's intrinsic value or his sell-on price, which in this case is £8M. And that's less than we bought him for, hence the loss.
30 Posted 02/09/2025 at 13:17:46
If only all our buys had been as painless as this one.

He had a lot of qualities a forward needs but robustness and mentality are far harder to judge.
Both will be tested in Glasgow and I wish him all the best of luck.
I disagree with those who think the Scottish league is poor. They may not have the finances, but passion and work ethic aplenty.
I'm not convinced Everton of the last few seasons would not also struggle in that league. I certainly wouldn't expect us to be fighting for the title.
It's certainly comparable to a mid to lower EPL / top Championship quality.
34 Posted 02/09/2025 at 21:44:48
The old firm would struggle to get out of the Championship with their current squads and many top flight Scottish teams would struggle to get out of our division 3.
Thats not to say there arent a few good players up there. But really the overall standard is really awful
35 Posted 03/09/2025 at 13:07:31
36 Posted 03/09/2025 at 14:05:55
Perhaps we could have persuaded the EPL to look at the intrinsic value of our players when they came to look at our accounts.
We bought Klassen and sold him for a loss, but really it was a profit because he wasn't worth as much as we paid for him. I can see that one getting traction, not.
They looked at how much we received in each financial year and how much we spent and the second could not be larger than the first by £105m over those 3 years. With Dibling, KDH, Anzou, Travers, Alcaraz costing up to £80m we are back in a mess, but roll on 2026 as we may spend nothing. No, the fee is spread over the life of the initial contract (as Iain says) and so our current value is only just over £5m.

I'm not sure I'd call the deadline day "hugely disappointing". We did some good business earlier – that's better than scrambling around at the last minute. Yes, we still need some reinforcements but it was never likely to happen in one window.
It's always nice to have some deadline day excitement but that's just for entertainment rather than as a sign of the club's progress.
