James Garner has put a damper on rampant speculation that his good form for Everton this season has drawn the attention of both Newcastle Utd and Manchester Utd, who could make offers for him in January.

“All I know at the moment [is] nothing's going [on]. There's been no talks. I know, obviously, my contract’s up in the summer but from my side, I've heard nothing.

“I'm enjoying my football, of course. It's been a great start to the season for the club, and I've started quite well myself. I just need to keep on improving, keep on winning games and add a little bit more.”

That is what he told FourFourTwo in an 'exclusive' interview, with his current Everton contract set to expire next Summer. The subject of him possibly being considered for the England team was also raised:

“I feel I've got the quality to play in the team. I just need to show it on a more regular basis. Today's game, unfortunately, is all about statistics. I need to go out there and get some stats for myself, goals, assists. That's only going to help me.”

Some of those stats look pretty good: Garner is ever-present for Everton so far this season, playing every minute of every game in the Premier League and Carabao Cup.

  • Tackles: 55
  • Interceptions: 35
  • Passing Accuracy: 79.8%

But he has picked up 5 yellow cards, 4 in the Premier League, and his next will trigger a 1-match suspension.

I thought there was a pretty strong claim that both Pickford and Garner were getting new contracts?

How can he say there's nothing going on... doesn't he talk to his peeps, for fuck's sake!!!

Well he can go for nothing at the end of the season so it will be Everton’s loss if he is allowed to go and James will be the real winner if that happens because there will be plenty of interest in him either way— whether it requires a fee to get him or not.

Good morning, Dave, I think you are spot on.

All a little bit strange, though, as Paul recalls @1: we carried this story last month (or was it just AI clickbait???):

New deals for Pickford and Garner set to follow Tarkowski's renewal

So someone is telling porkies.

Wow, I had assumed this all going on in the background and we would be getting a smiley pic with the good news!

Something not right here, get this done Everton.

Seems this club doesn't learn any lessons from the past. We allowed a lot of players to run down their contracts last season and it seems we are doing the same thing again.

Both Garner and Keane contracts are coming to an end, for me, Keane is definitely worth another 12-month extension.

Why do we let players' contracts run down?

He should have been another one last season. Or sold if they don't think he's good enough (he clearly is).

With Moyes talking about him getting in the England squad, then it's obvious that the manager rates him very highly.

Garner is still young and hasn't peaked so my guess is that it'll be the player who is hanging on, probably because of all the upheaval that was inside the club.

This is an issue that should have been dealt with a lot earlier. It's obvious that James Garner will not be short of suitors, given that he will be a free agent very soon...

There no reason whatsoever why they are not giving James another contract, so get on with it.

He's only 24 and will continue to improve in the future.

We have the option to extend by a further year, so perhaps not as time critical as we think.

I'd still like it sorted soonest though.

He can sign a pre-contract with another club in January.

So we'd better get a move on.

Not if we activate his extension.

I assume we still need to activate the extension before January?

By the sounds of it, he doesn't have an extension clause.

The site seems to have been sorted now, I posted yesterday and I was someone else.

Although having said that there's been many times that I wished I was someone else!

I think once the dust has settled most who said they were leaving will drift back on.

Footballers who are contributing heavily need to be kept content with their situation. We are still dealing with reputation issues in the transfer market. Garner talking damages future opportunities.

Regarding posters returning, I don't know, many split before the bettor front page focus. I don't think that would reassure any of them about where the site is headed.

Where did you read that, Paul?

That we don't have an extension option on his contract?

Brendan McLaughlin

Echo reporting option to extend does exist.

If I was in Garner's situation, extension option or not, or Ndaiye's, I wouldn't be very happy knowing I was pulling my tripe out and Grealish was getting 6 to 8 times the wages I was earning but doing a lot less over the course of nearly every game!

Yea, Paddy Boyland confirms that in The Athletic:

I revealed last season that the club have an option to extend Garner's contract by a further year, so the situation isn't as urgent as it sounds. A new deal was discussed under the previous regime, but the changes behind the scenes saw that grind to a halt.

That last bit is surprising... it's been nearly a year!

Mykolenko and Garner have a 12-month option. End of story.

Both will get offered new deals, and if they turn them down, will be sold in the summer. Any cash will be booked as PSR profit, as they will be fully amortised next summer.

The club has sorted Gana, Tarkowski and Pickford. These boys are left. The noise on Ndiaye points to me as if new terms are being looked at as well.

Aww, no Dave, don't be playing the Grealish card please.

And aren't Man City paying a huge slice of his ridiculous salary anyway?

Ian @20,

Both will get offered new deals, and if they turn them down, will be sold in the summer. Any cash will be booked as PSR profit, as they will be fully amortised next summer.

Sorry to go all forensic on you but do you really believe that to be true?

Do you not think that, come next summer, if they have turned down new deals (or rejected the 1-year extensions), they will simply walk away, without any fee being paid by anybody, leaving a big fat £0 to book as PSR profit?

Michael (21) ,Why not?

I believe both Garner and Ndiaye are doing more than Grealish.

If he carries on the way he has been performing, then I don't think he is a priority signing next summer even I though I might be in the minority at the moment.

Those free kicks should have everyone convinced he is a valuable asset.

Michael #22, I doubt very much that the players could reject contract extensions.

It would be the Club's option to extend or not, not the players.

Thanks, Eric.

I just assumed it would be a mutual thing that would be resolved one way or the other with each side working to achieve what they want.

But you are in effect saying the club is in control and it's up to them whether these players leave next Summer for nothing, or stay for another year? Forgive me for my scepticism but that does not sound very Bosman-like to me...

I have great concern about TFG and the running of the club.

We have players who will be allowed to walk away for nothing. The recruitment team have made a complete dog's breakfast of the summer transfer window. Moyes quite rightly wanted the final say on players, but it seems TFG have replaced Thelwell with a recruitment team who seem to have bought players who are nowhere near ready for the Premier League.

I get the feeling they made a corporate decision to reduce the age of the playing squad, which is fine provided you buy the correct youngsters. We have spent money on Dibling, Barry and Anzou and none are ready to play in the Premier League.

I think it's quite obvious that Grealish and Dewsbury-Hall were Moyes signings and they have vastly improved the team. With the youngsters, despite spending in excess of £70M, we don't know if any of them will make it.
