Hungary 2 - 3 Ireland

Third time lucky for Hungary from a corner and a disastrous start for Republic of Ireland in this Uefa Group F of the World Cup Qualifiers.

With barely 3 minutes gone Dominik Szoboszlai plays a quick short corner with Milos Kerkez and gets it back before whipping it in for Daniel Lukacs, who glances home from close range. But why that wasn't given offside will be a mystery.

There was a VAR check for offside, but the goal stands and it's a mountain to climb already for the visitors, who look rattled.

But they have Everton's Jake O'Brien and Seamus Coleman forming the right flank against the Majestirial Magyars!

And Troy Parrott gave the Magyar Minder no chance whatsoever from the penalty spot in what was a brilliant response from Ireland to get it back to level terms inside 20 minutes after Ogbene looked a little bit fortunate to be given a penalty.

But a fantastic strike by Barnabas Varga to put Hungary back in front! Milos Kerkez fires a cross into the striker, who, with time and space, chests it down outside the box and smashes it first time into the top corner.

Jake O'Brien on the stretch came very close to another equalizer for Ireland in added time before the break, but it skimmed off the outside of the angle.

A brilliant chipped finish from Adam Idah looked to have got the equalizer but he was marginally offside.

A bit disappointing for Evertonians to see Jake O'Brien fail to come out for the second half.  With corners being a key part of this game, his height will surely be missed.

And it never rains... Ogbene clutching his hamstring and going to ground after trying to chase down a clever through ball from Parrott.

Coleman withdrawn on the hour mark. And it would eventually be Troy Parrott who got the Irish level again with 10 minutes left, running on to a smart ball over the top and deftly chipping it over the advancing goalkeeper.

But time was ticking away and the Irish needed a win to preserve thier World Cup campaign and it was past the added 5 minutes at the ened when Troy Parrott saw a chance and strode in to touch a bouncing ball past the Hungarian keeper and stun the home crowd into silence.

In other qualifiers today, England beat Albania 2 - 0 with Thomas Tuchel denying Pickford the chance to enhance his already impressive clean sheet record for England, by selecting Henderson in goal.

But a brilliant strike into the top corner by Barnabas Varga puts the Magyars back in front.

What a goal.

Troy Parrott rounding off a fine week with 5 goals in 2 games to give Ireland a chance after been written off months ago. But even more impressive is his work rate in those last ten mins to get into positions to score and having the composure to finish.

Everton could do themselves a big favour and get him in after Christmas.

That was incredible desire and anticipation from Parrott. It looked like there was nothing on the header from Collins that surely was the goalkeeper's all hands down. But Parrott did brilliantly to dive in and get a vital foot on the ball to divert it past the keeper and just inside the post!

Unbelievable finish for Ireland. Jake and Seamus ecstatic.

What is even more interesting is that he replaced Ferguson who many TWebbers were advocating we try and sign. From what I have seen, he is a better goal getter.

Also, those who advocated Vardy as a “Fox in the Box”, he is 10 years younger and a far better prospect. Only problem is that Moyes is unlikely to play someone like him up front.

Certainly looks a far better prospect than Evan Ferguson.

Well, don't we need to get a bid ready for January?

Although, to be fair, he's not a midfielder.

Troy Parrott is 15 years younger than Vardy, Neil.

He could be our new Irish bargain...

But we need to act fast.

Thanks, Paul.

My main point is that he is a similar player and significantly younger and therefore a far better alternative to those who were advocating that we sign Vardy. Should have checked my facts first though.

Agree Neil. I would have said a decade or so if I had not looked it up while digging for stuff about Troy Parrott.

Also agree with Comac. Troy Parrott started a tad slowly but 13 in 14 games for AZ Alkmaar this season and 20 in 44 last season.

Our ace TFG recruitment team will surely not let us down -- again.

Rumour out there that he is an Evertonian. Too good to be true?

Albania should really be 1-0 up here. O'Reilly is not a very good defender.

I haven't seen the lad but Wolves wanted to sign him for £25M in the summer but the lad wanted to stay with his Dutch club.

After this week, I imagine a load of clubs will be interested in him but the price will have gone right up.

Spurs let him go after he was there for a few years and he had a few loan deals with them. Has he suddenly found his potential or is this present form a flash in the pan? As I said, I haven't seen the lad, so I haven't got a clue.

Troy Parrott was a superstar prodigy before Evan Ferguson. Pochettino loved him and he played for Spurs against 3 European giants as a 17-year-old and was brilliant. Then Mourinho came in and his career suffered. He had a few unsuccessful loans and struggled with the physicality of the lower leagues.

He decided to move to Holland to resurrect his career and signed for Excelsior who were bottom of the league. He found his form there and got a move to AZ Alkmaar. His game has really developed and it's not just his goals but how he leads the line. He's a really clever footballer, not the quickest, not the strongest, but is always alive in the box.

Those underestimating Ferguson shouldn't as he has real star quality. The problem with him is keeping him fit but he's a couple of years younger than Troy and hopefully he will get an injury-free run to show the player many Irish fans think he is.

Another player I hope we are keeping an eye on is Bosun Lawal. He plays for Stoke and is a big powerful midfielder and missed this window. I think he will be playing in the Premier League next season whether Stoke get promoted or not. An excellent footballer who has a big future.

Unbelievable day for the country.

Very accurate summary, Conor.

I had heard the same account about being a young prodigy but all went south with Mourinho. I had never seen him play but, from what I saw in the last 2 Ireland matches, Parrott is a far better prospect than Ferguson.

I would say that watching Ferguson v Armenia that I was disappointed with what I saw. Yes, he scored but had other chances which I would have thought he should have converted.

I have never rated Evan Ferguson as a Number 9 and don't know what people see in him. He has always been talked up but has never delivered.

Troy Parrott on the other hand is not as polished a footballer but certainly appears to know where the net is.

Some great finishing from Parrott, the likes of which our big lumbering centre forwards have demonstrated that they are not capable of, never mind at such a stage in a huge match away from home.

Not sure if Moyes would fancy him, but hard to say he wouldn't improve our current striking options.

Troy Parrott would certainly be an interesting option. He made a really good choice heading over to the Netherlands to learn how to be a better footballer in a good footballing side. The quality there is patchy but there are some outstanding players in that league - including his teammate Kees Smit - and it is a sophisticated / technical league too.

He'd be a different sort of option to Beto and the (in fairness improving) Barry.

It's easy to get carried away with players doing well at international level though - with Premier League has beens Depay, Arnautovic and Kramaric all ahead of Parrott in the scoring charts. But still, his form in the Netherlands should earn him the chance of a step up even without the RoI heroics.

He's probably just inflated his price tag above his true value but maybe a fee of about £20m to £25m would do it?

ps. I still rate Evan Ferguson.

A quote from Parrott to BBC this morning worthy of thought:

“Moving to The Netherlands gave me a sense of being wanted, I felt appreciated and sometimes for a player that's all they need”

Maybe some of this love for Beto and Barry may pay dividends …

Also:-

"I've had to take risks in moving to different places. I've failed, got back up. Failed again and then got back up. Who is to say I'm not going to fail again?“

Seems very level headed lad to me.

He could be our very own Parrott in the box.

But if he signed for us, he'd probably turn into a penguin...
