FA Cup Semi-Final Revenge

 38 Comments: First  |  Last

For those of us old enough to remember the 1977 FA Cup Semi-Final v Liverpool at Main Road when we were robbed, all thanks to ref, Clive Thomas, well here now after 35 years is our chance to get our revenge.

We have not lost an FA Cup semi-final since 1980 v West Ham at Elland Road. That's 6 games unbeaten (84 Southampton, 85 Luton, 86 Sheff Wed, 89 Norwich, 95 Spurs and 09 Man Utd).

As well as getting revenge for that "disallowed" Bryan Hamilton goal, a win at Wembley would only be our second win v Liverpool (Charity Shield 84 being the only other time at the old Wembley).

Let's hope it's our 7th successive semi-final success and we go on to lift the Cup!

COYB!

A dish best served cold, and scary how many of us are still affected by it.

Plus, does anyone recall Howard Kendals comments on Cup final day in '84: "We're not here for the party, we're here to win" or something along those lines. We have nothing to fear if we play like last night.

If we play with the belief in our our own ability like we did last night we will beat Liverpool because we are better than them.
Much more of the same please Moyes.

I was at the FA Final 1988?89, McCalls last mintue equaliser is the single greatest football memory for me, then onto despair with that twat Rush being allowed to score 2.

Lets set a few records straight by winning. Don't just believe we are better than them, know it.

Moyes has got to rid himself of this inferiority complex he seems to have.

We battered them last night and the shite will be as nervous as hell.

Just pick your best team Davey boy and tell em to go out, enjoy the game and batter the Red Bastards !

call me bitter all you want to but i want revenge for the clive thomas semi, the alan "handball" hansen milk cup final , the alan " shove on Sharpy" robinson 86 cup final, the Wayne Clarke disallowed goal at anfield , the Pat Nevin no penalty a couple of years later , the Gerrard / Naysmith "tackle" the Graeme Poll/Don Hutchinson goal that never was , the Clattenberg derby of sendings off and Kung Fu Kuyt challenges , and the Atkinson Rodwell Suarez debacle ......anything i've missed?.....No?.....i hope every Premier League referee gets to read this and has a chance to become a Goodison legend by redressing the balance a fraction on Grand National weekend. Dave Lynch-I think a few fans have to get rid of their inferiority complex too. Plus get rid of their 'we're hard done to and unlucky Evertonians' tag too. If we go a goal down too many starting moping rather than getting riled.

David , thee is a massive difference between "inferiorty complex " and being downright cheated by biased referees!!Ask any Torino, Athletico Madrid,or Espanol fans how many decisions go their way in derbys??? We are EVERTON and should not have to accept the crap we usually put up with at a derby match .....We are EVERTON....an if you know your history....

Agree David. In the next few weeks we'll probalby have lads on here going on about how we will be playing against 12 men etc, before a ball is even kicked, because the ref will give the shite everything. Lets just forget about the shite until the day of the game.

When away playing for n.Ireland u16 in a euro qualifier against Finland , then national first team manager Brian Hamilton attended our camp.

It was a massive boost as a kid and I seized the opportunity to ask him about the incident , he was surprised that someone my age would ask him about it and he said with total honesty that the ball connected with his side and not his hand , furthermore he reiterated what bob latchford said about Thomas

Brian , why should we accept it before it starts? Who gave them the God given right to get all the breaks? maybe if a few more of us opposed the "usual Derby scenario" and got stuck into the media prior to the games we might not end up with the usual result of accepting defeats . We always get ripped off against them wether they have the better side or not. its time to let the everyone know how often that happens and start putting things in OUR favour for once. Remember who we are ... we are EVERTON ....before Shankly they didn't even create a ripple in the press ......WE ARE EVERTON!!!

I agree about all those comments about staying positive. All the pressure will be on the shite. Dalglish is probably shitting himself by now. We are the team he didn't want to play. Will be great to see him walking away (again) when we beat them.
Just going back to '77. My mate Frank was so incenced by Thomas' decision not to award a penalty, that he picked up the radio and promptly flung it through his mum's kitchen window before going out to get pissed.

Andy, you've missed the one where Gary McAllister was allowed to move the ball 15 yards closer to our goal at a free kick and scored, and for the Clattenburg Derby you missed the incident of Carragher wrestling to the gound of Lescott in the last minute.

But apart from that, well no, it is a pretty good list.

Bring on the Joe Royle "bollocks to your dream final " spirit of 95 !! We battered Spurs with thousands of fans all round Elland Road and beat UTD at Wembley because we didn't accept that we were not good enough and the players lifted for the fans. We need to believe that again from now. tell the 6000 travelling fans on Tuesday night that we need to get over our "we're hard done to and unlucky Evertonians" ......never forget who we are !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's just about my earliest football memory - at least for a significant game: We lost the League cup final in a second replay, if I remember right a few weeks before.

And Thomas - did he ever explain what he claimed the decision was for? Handball, perhaps; Hamilton scored with midriff as the cross was too low for his head, too high to volley in; or did he claim it was offside?

Replays showed it was comfortably neither.

When I wrote an email to my redshite-supporting brother whether I was blinkered a few years back about perceived bias from refs, as I could only remember dodgy decisions against us - denied penalties in 84 league cup final, 86 Cup Final, in various league; he replied:
Ha, ha,
Clive Thomas Appreciation Society.

Those fuckers remember it too.

ps, I was at the 3-0 Johnson game and my bruv was in with the other lot in Bullens. At 2-0 up, Liverpool shoulda got a pen and didn't, and I texted him: This is in the bag, you didn't get a fair pen shout. We never get decisions against you; today is karma.

I was only 9 month old so have no memory off the 1977 semi but I do know the bad feeling it created that goes on to this day.

For me,I want revenge for the sickening 1986 FA Cup final loss, what I still regard as the worst day I've had as a Blue.

Leaving Wembley that day with my Uncle was the lowest feeling ever.

Time to give those twats a taste of their own medicine.

I live in the North East and went in to deepest, darkest Sunderland before the game last night for a drink, to meet a couple of mates, a couple of whom are Mackems....

It turns out loads of them had already booked their train tickets, flight and hotels before the replay. Cheeky fuckin' bastards!

Serves them fuckin' right..........

We were magnificent last night and I was proud to be a part of it; proud to be a Blue...

Now, lets beat them twats and win the Cup.

I was too young (just about) to remember the 1977 semi-final, but have come to realise what a twat Clive Thomas is in the eyes of older Evertonians. After all the unlucky/downright wrong decisions we've had against that lot since, surely, SURELY our day will come this time? I don't think I could handle another spawny win by them, especially at Wembley!!

Someone on ToffeeWeb should collect videos of all the bad refereeing decisions, Bambi's "pulling out of a tackle" on Naismith's stomach, and every other disgusting trick those bastards appear to have got away with - and then send it to Moyes who should sit the team down for a "pre-match talk" - EACH AND EVERY day from the Monday to the Saturday before the match.
Come the KO, would the boys need any more motivation?

Ste, big noses equaliser wasnt just late, we should have all been past Watford Gap by the time that went in. Talk about charity, I think the ref just waited for them to score and then blew the final whistle, Sir Alex would have been slapping his watch and choking on his chewy!!!

As for all the decisions against us at the top, we have all been there and all seen these shocking decisions. It is the shites lack of admittance to these dodgy decisions and their mocking of us for years that will lead to that stupid scarf being the least bought product ever...in history. I hate them with a passion and I have no doubt that my hatred will only get worse. Lets FTRS!!! COYB!!!!

John (341) I was on the Kippax side that night, leaning on a barrier above the access route half way up. When Hamilton "scored" my mate and I leapt down and were dancing round like idiots. Probably the last people in the stadium to realise it had been disallowed - absolutely gutted.
