A Question to Everton’s Commercial and Marketing Department

 Comments (22) jump to end

I am a HUGE fan of Jon Stewart (of Daily Show fame). So much so that I face extradition to the US on a daily basis by watching it online, riding roughshod over contractual law. (I''m a modern day Robin Hood and no mistake.)

I’ve just watched Thursday’s show (brilliant as usual, cutting to the chase of HSBC for example), but the jaw droppingly amazing feature of this edition was the online advert.

The product being sold to the USA demographic following JS was, and this really depresses me, the new Spurs kit!!!!!! "Tottenham Hotspur" ffs!!
They don’t employ the USA’s most famous Tourette’s sufferer (and excellent shot stopper by the way). Spurs aren’t the favourite team of USA’s footballing favourite son and part time Toffee!

This marketing kick in the cahones seems to sum up the ineptitude or lack or imagination in the heart of the Everton organisation (or am I being oxymoronic?)

Have to say it really depressed me. I hope that Jon Stewart can raise my spirit next week with political titters and replace that Spurs ad with the Lynx "premature perspiration" one once again. Oh, and if the Intelligence Agencies of Uncle Sam are reading this, then, please don’t render me. "God Bless America!"

This surprises you? Our Club's official link to North American supporters, www.freewebs.com/everton/ doesn't even work.

Who gives a shit.. Just because Spurs advertise during the Daily Show doesn't make them better than us... Maybe they are advertising just because they are soooo far behind us in terms of the American market and they are simply trying to make their first inroads, you don't know, nor do I... Don't be so paranoid!

Drew.... we give a shit: if we had Howard, Donovan and Dempsey there would by no-one at EFC capable of exploiting it...

It is not for the notoriety that we want to have a presence, it is for the financial benefits, so don't be so naive. Someone at spurs knows this.... end of.

Alun, how do you get the Daily Show? I've tried everything without success.

Sadly it doesn't surprise. Just seems we are really missing a trick with the current links we have to our (ex) colonial cousins.

David (053), email me at gmail (just use my name) and I'll tell you way to do it.

Drew - Didn't read Alun's post as paranoic. Thought his "WTF" even-handed. The point is they're trying and we're not, even though our club is already well known in the US simply by having signed more Americans than any club in the EPL.

Fucking Spurs has a better idea in the States than our owners do.

I'm not sure you should put a lot of significance in seeing the Spurs advert. A lot of websites are now doing targeted ads based on your location / IP address / apparent interests...

Not that you would ever in a million years see an advert for Everton gear!

That's absolutely correct, Michael, even on ToffeeWeb, I get Asian slanted Ads which I am certain don't pop up in UK.

Alun- good point made in your OP. Everton's marketing is truly abysmal. But be careful....extradition treaties are a one way ticket to the US ;)

Hi Michael (062)

To watch the Daily Show in the UK you have to trick their website into thinking that you are in the USA otherwise the feed the blocked weith a "you cannot view this footage as you are outside USA jurisdicton" or some such. So the good ol' boys (and gals) of the US of A are sadly being encouraged to wear the new Spurs kits over and above the magnificent, and far more fashionable and forgiving (for the fuller figure), Royal Blue.

Everton advertise widely in Thailand and China.. Do Spurs? Are Spurs fans up in arms that their club aren't advertising in these countries? Who gives..

You need to use Firefox (not Chrome or IE) and have the 'Modify Headers' tool installed. There are plenty of guides on the Web on how to do it. Very straightforward.

Drew, the point is we are getting left behind once again. We need to get out there and and promote our club in the States while we have Howard and with Donovan having played for us we should be selling Everton to the American public.

Alun, you're in luck. Comedy Central in the UK are airing The Daily Show from tomorrow.

Jon Stewart actually talks about Everton to Landon Donovan in this episode:

Thanks for the support Mike and James. And thanks for the link to Landon Donovan Louis (missed this one first time around).

As an addendum, Spurs advert is pretty rank ("Guinness" they ain't!)

James Flynn # 182 Where on earth did you get the 'Take off the supporters gear' story from. What I said was we were told by the Stewards not to show our support for the opposition by this I was referring to VOCAL support because the 'Locals' don't like to hear any dissenting voices.

It would be nice if Everton could at least get a US link to work though wouldn't it? We still seem to be run by a bunch of complete shambling amateurs. I want new owners just for the sake of the shake up they'd be bound to produce internally.

Drew,

I have been to Thailand and China on numerous occasions and have never seen anything remotely to do with Everton, in fact in Bangkok airport in April I saw a few Leicester City displays to buy their kit but nothing of Everton — truly awful marketing!!!

Unbelievable. Our non-marketing department seem to have missed a trick here. It's like we're back in 1984.

Peter (213) - Then I mis-interpreted what you were saying and apologize to you for it.

Here's my comment amended, You are the only fan attending any sporting event in American history who's been, "told by the Stewards not to show our support for the opposition by this I was referring to VOCAL support because the 'Locals' don't like to hear any dissenting voices".

First time I've ever heard what you say happened happening at a sporting event in the States.

Well, I guess the marketing team won't be in Indonesia, the trip has been cancelled, another farce. How much longer do we stand for this shit? The list of cock ups is never ending at this stage.
