Everton's second string held on to beat Norwich 2-1 at Finch Farm yesterday thanks to goals by Magaye Gueye and Conor McAleny, the latter marking his return from almost two months out with what proved to be the winner.

McAleny has been sidelined with an ankle problem but popped up inside the six-yard box to slot home after Gueye had converted from Apostolos Vellios's pass after just eight minutes.

Jacob Murphy pulled one back for the visitors 10 minutes before the break but, despite a late penalty appeal, the Blues held the Canaries off in the second half.

Unfortunately, substitute Francisco Junior had to be withdrawn himself after rolling his ankle.

Everton U21s:Taudul; Browning, Touray, Lundstram, Duffy; Pennington, Kennedy, Barkley; Vellios (61' Junior (77' Forrester)), Gueye, McAleny (73 Hope).
Subs not Used: Griffiths, Hammar.
