A controversial Tweet sent from the account of Everton defender, Shane Duffy, could prompt a fine by the Club report The Telegraph.

The 21-year-old has apologised for the fact that a pro-IRA message was retweeted from his Twitter account on Sunday night but he insists the Tweet was sent without his knowledge by someone who got hold of his mobile phone when he left it unattended.

Regardless, Duffy assumed responsibility for the fact that it came from his account — whether he sent the Tweet or not — but he may still face disciplinary action if his manager, David Moyes, feels that the Club needs to take action.

After posting his apology to the social media network he later Tweeted: “cant leave ur phone anywhere now!!”, and then “The retweets and tweets was not me. Got to accept the hate. Really am sorry for this mess! Sorry guys!”

A spokesman from Everton is quoted as saying, “Shane was on an evening out when his phone was taken by someone, who then retweeted an offensive remark, for which Shane has this morning publicly apologised,” which would seem to draw a line under the issue but the Telegraph suggest that he may still be fined by the Club.
