Arsenal vs Everton

Match Preview
With six games to go and mileage still remaining in their quest for Europe, Everton face the most important game of the season so far as they prepare for a massive game against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium this evening.

Despite having won four and drawn one of their last five games, the Blues remain in sixth place, three points off the European places as one of the realities of life in the upper reaches of the Premier League plays out: the teams above you have a tendency to keep winning.

Tottenham may have been doing their best to disprove that adage lately, having managed just one from their last four games, but the Gunners are a case in point; since losing at White Hart Lane at the beginning of March, they have won four straight and they leapt into third place on Saturday after their annoying come-from-behind victory over Norwich City.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have won three of their last four but cup commitments on the domestic and European fronts have Rafael Benitez' squad grinding through six games in 16 days and there is scope for them slipping up at Fulham tomorrow.

As he seeks to do something he has thus far failed to achieve in 11 years in the Goodison hotseat — namely, win on Arsenal's turf — David Moyes will know all too well that a victory for Everton would push them to within a point of Arsene Wenger's team, level on points with Spurs and Chelsea (who still have to play each other) and really add some heat to the chase for Champions League and Europa League qualification.

Though he suggested that a few injury "niggles" came out of Saturday's stroll past QPR, Moyes is expected to have a virtually full squad from which to choose. Assuming none of those who started on Saturday miss out, it's hard to see the manager making any changes.

That would mean Nikica Jelavic continuing on the bench while Victor Anichebe continues to blossom from the surly and petulant figure whose Everton days seemed numbered not too long ago into a strong, determined and industrious striker able to both lead the forward line and score goals. He has also become something of a lucky charm — Everton haven't lost in the 24 matches when he has scored.

Moyes also reiterated that Darron Gibson will likely require surgery in the summer to correct his long-standing thigh issue it's not expected to keep him out of the side for now and he should be in the line-up alongside Leon Osman and behind Marouane Fellaini.

Though there are points there to be won in the five games that follow and a draw would a good result that would keep them within striking distance of Chelsea and Spurs, it's fair to say that Everton's Champions League dreams are on the line this evening.

Though Moyes was probably referring to the impending trips to the Stadium of Light, Anfield and Stamford Bridge as much as this evening, he effectively admitted as much, telling his players "we're going to have to win away from home, and for the Champions League it might have to be more than one."

The stakes are huge and the Blues' cannot allow the inferiority complex they often assume against the "top four" nor their abysmal Premier League record when playing at Arsenal — an Everton team hasn't beaten the Gunners on their own ground since the 1995-96 season — to enter the equation. Win, and the Champions League is not a fanciful dream but an achievable goal if the team wants it enough and has the belief.

Even though part of me feels we have an outside shot at moving above one of these London clubs..... Does anyone know where 6th would leave us with regards to European qualification?

Jamie - 6th doesn't get us into Europe as the other Europa League spot is now taken by Wigan. We'd have to finish 5th instead.

Much as I would love to see an Everton win big game bottler Davey Moyes has an unfortunate history against the 'Big Four' .

Looks like Fabianski might be injured tonight, which could be a big bonus. Does anyone know who the ref is....?

Everything to play for tonight, I'd be ecstatic with a win but I'd probably take a draw now, much like the Spurs game. Arsenal will be going for it tonight, if you take a look at the league a win will put some clear daylight between them and Chelsea / Spurs / us and they are undoubtedly on a roll. Need everyone to be on top of their game and we stand a chance.

We have to treat these games like a cup run now — there are are no runners-up prizes.

Referee tonight is Neil Swarbrick......

Interesting comments from Jags in this mornings papers saying we haven't turned up in big games this season and we need to change that. Roll on 7.45pm!

I would not want Everton in the Europa League with our small squad. If Moyes goes, which I hope he doe,s the new manager won't want this extra amount of games on his team.

Wenger wanted to sign Mirallas. I've got a funny feeling he may be the match winner tonight... I'm strangely optimistic of a win tonight.

Where is the destabilising Everton gossip in the press this morning? Obviously not an Arsenal thing.

Don't know why but have got a funny feeling we might just win tonight. They haven't got an RVP anymore and I think Vic can cause their two centre halves problems. I'm not normally optimistic but I think we can do this.

Key thing is we have to believe we can win.

Ian 010 from what I have found from http://kassiesa.home.xs4all.nl/bert/uefa/index.html)
looks like it doesn't make any difference to us. I think if Chelsea win EL and finish 5th then Cup holder place goes to another country. I've not seen anything implying that England would get an extra EL place.

Ian #010, Phil #028

My memory is that that particular scenario occurred in our fourth place year.

The RS bleated that they should get a place as EC winners and the Premiership was granted a fifth spot; but Uefa later declared that that would never happen again.

Mike Green, the ref is apparently Neil Swarbrick.

I've said before that with every game that passes a win at any of the Sky 4 comes closer to happening. Let's hope it's tonight and that we can see off some other away day demons this season, too.

Difficult game, they're playing really well. The Norwich result just showed that they're still winning even when playing badly.

To be honest, it would be a really good game if we go toe to toe with them and try and play football (albeit we'd probably end up drawing or losing).

Contrary to what some on here think, we are one of the Prem's good footballing sides and the games against Arsenal are always good. However, I'd prefer it if Fellaini and Anichebe just monstered them and we won 1-0.

Anyone thinking though that if we just 'go for it' we'll turn them over at their own place is deluded. They went and beat Munich at the Allianz and sometimes our former best player doesn't even get in their team. We have the ability to win but, if they're on their game, it will be incredibly difficult.

The more I think about it, this could very much be one of the Premier League games of the season!

Some stat's to ponder from F365 - cut out the hoofing Jag's!!

* Leighton Baines is the only player in Europe's top five leagues to have created 100-plus chances. He created five chances v QPR on Saturday.

* Only three teams (Norwich, Reading and Stoke) complete fewer dribbles per game than Everton (5.1).

* Only Fulham and Newcastle attempt more long balls per game than Everton (64).

Wouldn't it be great for once after an Arsenal away game to be talking about how we have outplayed and outfought them to get three points.

Instead we will probably talk about some terrible refereeing decision or how the players froze and bottled their big chance.

I hope it's the former of the two.

The only way England can now get an extra Europa place is if Chelsea win the Europa cup but don't qualify through the league. But as the only way they wouldn't qualify is if we finished above them and did qualify - it's not really worth discussing.

Regardless. I'm expecting a big performance from us tonight and a cracking game for the neutral. Rewatched the QPR game today and our pitch really hinders us. You can't play good football on that pitch. I'm looking forward to seeing our 4 wingers in action on a good pitch.

Massive game - which is, in itself, something of an achievement. Or progress, at the very least.

We're playing well enough to get something from this game. But, then again, so are Arsenal. I personally think they're nothing special and I wouldn't say they're a far better side than us... it's just our record against them. Not just at The Emirates but Highbury as well.

It's another Liverpool situation. A ground where you could count on one hand the number of times we've won in say the last 40 years... someone'll stat me up on that, I'm sure. That's why I'm just not confident. No other reason. I'd be more than happy with a draw.

I think a lot will depend on whether Gibson can shackle Cazorla, who very much makes them tick at the moment, and whether big Vic can bully Koscielny and Vermaelen to make sure we retain the ball.

I will be there tonight and would love to leave having witnessed the Toffess take 3 points any which way.

Paul Smith
27 Posted 16/04/2013 at 11:34:45
My personal opinion is that I would rest Osman as I think we could get overrun in midfield and play Fellaini next to Gibson with Mirallas given a free role behind Vic and maybe include Oviedo on one of the wings to help counter the threat of Walcott maybe. Whatever we do, we must be positive when we have the ball and really have a go at Arsenal.

I had a look on the official Arsenal site. Wilshere is really bigging us up, repeating his claim that Osman is like Iniesta! Nice to get a bit of proper respect.

http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/wilshere-we-ll-do-whatever-it-takes

I'm not sure if Wilshere will play. He was taken off against Norwich and may not be up to full speed after his injury. I'll be glad if he's out because he is a real danger.

Over to you Moyes, earn your money and prove me wrong, win it!!!!!!

Brian Harrison
31 Posted 16/04/2013 at 11:43:42
Moyes said after Saturdays game that some were carrying bumps and bruises, and that Osman really shouldn't have played. So he might have some interesting selections to make tonight. Should Osman not make the team tonight I would like to see Fellaini play in midfield alongside Gibson, and possibly play Mirallas just behind Vic. Problem with that is who plays wide right, don't think the fans would be happy if Naismith started, could leave Mirallas out wide and let Jelavic partner Vic up front. Who would be a manager?
Ernie Baywood
32 Posted 16/04/2013 at 11:49:40
Possibility they'll bring back Lurch Mertesacker. If we play long every time we'll get found out. We need to mix it up... let Vic use his body with Mirallas buzzing around and running at them. He's got a good athlete in Gibbs (or Monreal) against him, so let's get him matched up against a lumbering carthorse. I don't like Fellaini as 2nd forward in this game.

So now everyone is worried about Osman and wants Vic to start. How times change.

Judging by Kevin's stats we must really mix it up a lot. It shows that we pass a lot too without stating it. Or am I deluded?

Agree about Mertesacker playing especially after the goal they conceded against Norwich. They will be worried about corners and free kicks. They had their luck against Norwich. All I ask is for fair refereeing. COYB

If we want to be considered a team good enough for Europe then we need to win this game. It's a cup final. We had a far easier chance of Europe but we were embarrassed by Wigan at home & blew it. The team owes it to the fans after that to bring home 3 points.

39 Posted 16/04/2013 at 12:26:55
It wouldn't surprise me if Moyes brought Heitinga back in for this one. Not sure who'd be left out. Osman being rumoured to be injured would solve that one.
Kev Johnson
40 Posted 16/04/2013 at 12:36:12
I think that's a decent call, Steve (082). We'll need to disrupt their midfield as much as possible, because they have some pretty talented players in that area. The only thing is... in theory, Heitinga should be able to play a spoiler role in midfield and distribute the ball tidily when he wins it BUT I don't recall ever seeing him do that particularly well. Or have I forgotten a MotM performance from him in midfield?
Chris Kelly
41 Posted 16/04/2013 at 12:39:43
Ahhhhhh, living in Japan these 7:45pm kick offs are killing me! Up at 3:45am for this one. A win will surely eradicate any kind of sleepiness at work tomorrow though.
Mark Scarratt
42 Posted 16/04/2013 at 12:47:19
Having not won at any of Arsenal, Liverpool, or Chelsea under Moyes, we probably now need to win 2 out of those 3 away games, plus our 2 home games and also win at Sunderland. That would give us 68 pts, which should be enough for top 4.

Draws are no use, so please Mr Moyes lets attack and go for it. We have nothing to lose. If we sit back and hope to nick a draw, we will get done and lose 1-0. Let's have a good go. I would rather lose 5-3 having tried, rather than defend and lose 1-0.

James Martin
43 Posted 16/04/2013 at 12:48:21
Kev, Heitinga is terrible in midfield... you have not forgotten any performances: The 4-1 home defeat to West Brom a few seasons back is etched forever in my mind. Cazorla, Wilshere, Rosicky whoever is playing will have a field day with the space that a centre-back playing midfield is happy to leave in behind him.

They play there as if they're playing CB, quite happy to let people run in behind them and only bothered about covering one side of the pitch. It's a far different skill to know when to pass runners off to your CBs and covering centrally whilst your midfield partner goes forward. Heitinga just cannot do this, no one in the team can apart from Gibson and Neville. (Unfortunately Neville can't do the other side of the game which is: What to do with the ball.)

Ernie Baywood
44 Posted 16/04/2013 at 12:49:58
They do have some decent midfielders but ours isn't too bad.

.................Howard
Coleman...Jagielka...Distin...Baines
...................Gibson
..........Osman........Fellaini
Mirallas........................Pienaar
.....................Anichebe

The three to combat their midfield and the two wide players mixing up the focus of the attack and running at their weak centre-halves.

Summed up perfectly in a nutshell, Mark Scarratt. Europa League is out of the question and ends up being a major drain on resources with very little to gain in return – as recently witnessed by the demise of Spurs and the injuries that they have suffered to key players such as Bale.

The next four weeks are the acid test for Moyes and his current band of players, win away at Arsenal and there is the spring-board and incentive to kick on for a real shot at 4th place. Big ask given our previous form at the Emirates and Anfield, however the hoodoo needs laying to rest and there can be surely no bigger incentive to the likes of Fellaini in achieving 4th place. My heart says yes but my head says no...

Onwards Evertonians !

46 Posted 16/04/2013 at 13:05:55
Moyes's press conference has worried me slightly. He didn't say we were hoping for a win or three points, he said we were hoping to get "something". That either means he will go for a point and a win would be a bonus, or he is reducing our hopes a bit.

I wish he would stop labelling us as underdogs, he should be displaying a positive attitude. Arsenal are there for the taking tonight, and I have a feeling this could be our day. COYB!!!!!!!

Peter (090)

The Europa League might not be ideal from a footballing perspective as you point out (injuries etc.). But I for one would love the opportunity to travel around Europe to see my team again, in either CL or EL.

A warm evening drinking beer in a square in Lisbon or Rome is certainly a preferable pre-match scene to huddling in a packed boozer in Stoke with the rain lashing down outside!!

Brian Harrison
48 Posted 16/04/2013 at 13:20:17
Well these next 2 games will decide if we can get into the top four. Arsenal are away to Fulham after tonight's game and Spurs are home to City while Chelsea are away to Liverpool. So if everything went our way it could be a very interesting end to the season.
Paul Andrews
49 Posted 16/04/2013 at 13:21:08
Brian Harrison,

3 centre halves, wing backs Coleman & Baines.

3 central midfield (otherwise we will get outnumbered)Fellaini Gibson Pienaar. Mirallas behind Anichebe.

That formation lets us keep it tight in midfield, but when we have the ball it, if played correctly, is very attack minded.

I understand the desire for European football but ultimately if we are serious about CL qualification, it would be a massive hindrance given our squad size. I think it will find Spurs out this season and both the other English participants Newcastle and the RS have had poorish seasons.

So I guess the question is should our ambition be to accept our financial limitations and take the crumbs off the CL table or realise that the only current realistic way of a breakthrough is Top 4 and the financial rewards of the CL? That's a genuine question by the way because my head says one thing and my heart says another!

7 years of following Everton and I got to thinking - I think this is the most important game in those 7 years.

The Gosling goal game, The Capitulation v Liverpool were big but this one sees a real shot at CL if we get 3 points.

The FA Cup final was probably the biggest... but surely this one is up there?

Or am I being the dramatic American?

Sorry to sound pessimistic, but I can't see us getting anything out of tonight's game. We just don't have the "when-it-matters-most" mentality... never have done; plus Arsenal are such a creative side... thank God Neville won't be on the pitch! (he won't play, will he?)
I'm considering staying away from all forms of information technology tonight, so as not to hear the bad news until tomorrow morning... but will I be able to sleep??

While I do understand the hindrance it may cause, I'd prefer to be in the Europa than nothing at all. I've never really been in a position to follow the Blues outside of the UK so it would be a great experience for me and many other fans.

Onto tonight, if Ossie misses out then it probably is Heitinga coming in - I just pray it isn't Phil Neville's swan-song. It doesn't fill me with confidence but Heitinga is almost certainly our best option. It shows just how thin our midfield options are. Of course, had Moyes attempted to bed in Barkley or Oviedo over the course of the season one of them may have been able to step in to fill the void. Alas that hasn't happened and we are where we are.

If Osman is fit then the team names itself. Victor and Fellaini could bully that Arsenal defence if they are up for it tonight. Lets hope they are.

Well day of reckoning is upon us. With Chelsea getting knocked out of the cup the last chance of 6th being good enough for a European spot has gone - only 5th will do now (even if Chelsea win the EL, it wont help us, apparently).

11 years and no win away to the ars - now or never Davey. A full squad, no injuries or suspensions so no excuses there. A defeat and CL is as good as over, a draw and it'll be looking very grim indeed as we'd have played more games than the others, a WIN and we're only behind spurs and chelsea on GD! (All be it having played more games).

Given that a draw is not much use, there is really only way to play this and that is simply to go for it.

Will be interesting to see if Davey buy breaks out of his caution first shell or reverts back to KITAP1.........

Am certainly looking forward to this one....with a 5 point cusion over Liverpool, we need to throw the preverbial sink at them tonight!

As I keep looking at the table I see how close we are but think we have missed some opportunities which lends me to believe we will miss out on Champions League. However, you can never tell what will happen. Everton have a full squad available and getting that winning feeling despite some average display.

Arsenal are in the same boat and were once again lucky on Saturday. We could hope they are below par again today but I for one would not like to rely on that and force the issue from the start instead of bottling up in a defensive formation. You cannot go to places like The Emirates or Old Trafford and play on the back foot for 90 minutes as they have many players capable of scoring goals.

Moyes no doubt will carry on regardless with his usual tactics and make it a nail-biting evening for the Blues but he surely has to know that one point is useless. The same team will start unless Osman is injured after Saturday's withdrawal and as long as they tackle well and pass well then they should at least get a draw albeit of little consequence.

Maybe its mind games but according to the Echo they have Moyes quoted as saying that he would give Everton a 15% chance of claiming fourth place, thats not entirely optimistic !

Come on, Blues, let's go out there and get stuck in.

It's not ENTIRELY pessimistic either Peter.

For most of the season I've been begging for that team. Tonight though I really think Fellaini could dominate their centre backs.

Come on you Blues! I've felt this result in my bones for months and we're gonna fucking do this thing today!! Arsene has used up his likability, now it's time for him to start exhausting his nine lives. CAMMMMMMOOOONNNNN!!!

I was just thinking that I'd not seen such an optimistic thread just before a mega-game for a long time. Then I read Richard's #124, and felt better because some bugger was being pessimistic. Then he stopped being pessimistic.

I'd have volunteered to be the pessimistic one... ... but I can't. I think that we're in with a real shout!!

Man for man, Arsenal have better players than us, so all we can ask is the team give 100% effort and play like they have belief they can win.

I'll be satisfied if we do that... and, if we play like that, we'll have a great chance of coming away with some points.

Hello Blues, We must win there sometime, why not tonight?

They to score first, then big Vic followed by Jeli... 2 -1 to us.

Come on you Blues.

I find this is part of being an Evertonian. I'm nervous, I'm clock-watching, part of me wants to give my ticket to someone and sit in a 'quiet place' until 10pm, most of me wants to be in there with the lads to witness Everton REALLY step up to the plate this time! My mrs has just texted asking"should I record it for you in case you win???" Bookies have them as favourites but just had a few beers with some Arsenal pals and they genuinely fear us tonight. Sod it, I'm gonna grab some food then get in there.......then again??? Oh God, please let us win.......!

Wayne #163,

If we get anything less than a win tonight then all you will hear is that we somehow bottled it, Moyes choked, he told them not to win, we sat back blah blah blah. The excuse 'they were better than us on their own ground and battered us' does not belong in the TW vocab. It is never an excuse – there is always someone to blame.

The concept of a team being better than us and forcing us into defending for portions of the game also does not exist in the TW mind. On this site we dictate the entire 90 minutes regardless of the opposition, so if we're back defending then it's because Moyes told us to, even if he's on the touchline shouting 'forward' at his players.

Also if we play like Stoke, defend all match and score from a corner then by magic the football was amazing and Moyes is a genius (the football was amazing part only lasts until the next debate about Moyes's tenure where it gets compiled under the '11 years of hoofball' section). If we batter Arsenal and lose or draw thanks to any one from refereeing error, individual mistake, speculative wondergoal, or deflected fluke, then suddenly the football was dour an Moyes is a tactically inept PE teacher.

Crapping it, but oddly confident.

I don't happen to think they're better than us - man for man, I'd wouldn't swop in many - maybe Cazorla, Arteta, Walcott, Rosicky.

I think we've got the better defence right across the back, and a physically stronger central midfield, presuming Gibbo and Fella partner there.

If the Ref is willing to allow a hard but fair game I fancy us to batter these, so long as we keep our shape and don't leave them room to use pace on the break too often.

COYFB!!
(Now for a brandy and Brufen combo - head's battered with nerves for this one)

James Martin,

The excuse ....they were better than us and battered us has been used on 40 plus occasions in David's reign. I think the problem lies with his inferiority complex when we play away games at Arsenal, Chelsea, Man Utd etc.

Hopefully tonight he realises it is shit or bust, a draw is not enough, and sets the team up accordingly.

James - 169, if all you can come up with is a sarcastic go at people who have in their opinion legitimate gripes with the manager and contribute nothing else, then that's your bed to sleep in. Every fan is entitled to his/her view and allowed to debate it. Either you agree or disagree however resorting to childish sarcastic posts like yours does not really add anything, does it.

In response to your post, I would ask you to re-read the first couple of lines in your post and then maybe watch the Wigan cup game at your leisure and comment on why that maybe happened?

Alternatively how about plugging that bile up until tonight's game is done and dusted and then use it to have a sensible debate afterwards – regardless of the result.

We all want to Blues to win tonight, regardless of performance. However, if the result is shite and the performance is not up to scratch then people are allowed to question why/have a go – lets wait and see which Everton turn up tonight.

Never a better opportunity than tonight this is not Arsenal of yore and in all honesty the pressure is massively on them no-one gives us a chance just as we prefer it so the legend goes.

Score first go at them and the london tourists will be leaving The Emirates quicker than you can say new stadiums are a curse.

If CL is your tipping point Moyes make a start show some hunger and beat the lightweights.

This game is a no-brainer. Everton have to win. Forget the draw Moyes!

You won't beat the likes of Arsenal with the team he has by trying to defend for 90 minutes and snatch a goal — not without a tremendous amount of luck and the ref on our side... which almost never happens.

Everton have the players who can attack Arsenal and make a difference early on which is what they should do. Better to go down with a fight rather than a defensive wimper.

Arsenal have been vulnerable in many games this season and I believe they are very shaky on defence so they have to attack too. Moyes, however, will probably continue with the same tactics he has used for years and it will be a nail-biting 90 minutes for the Evertonians.

Some trends have to change, however, and a win in the capital against one of the ''big'' 'teams would never be more welcome.

Arsenal play some very good attractive football, but they are very brittle. Let's just get physical with them and expose their leaky defence.
