Everton confirm Moyes's departure to Man Utd

Manager will oversee Blues' last two games
Everton have confirmed that David Moyes will leave the Club at the end of the season, after telling Bill Kenwright of his desire to take up the reins at Manchester United. Moyes will continue to serve out his contract as Everton boss for the final two games against West Ham and Chelsea before calling time on his 11th and final full season at Goodison Park.

A statement on the Club's official website provided confirmation of news that first broke yesterday following Sir Alex Ferguson's decision to retire after 26½ years at the United helm:

Everton can confirm that David Moyes will leave the Club at the end of the season.

The Manager met Chairman Bill Kenwright early yesterday evening (Wednesday 8th May) and confirmed his desire to join Manchester United.

The Chairman, on behalf of the Club, would like to place on record his thanks to David for the massive contribution he has made to Everton since his arrival in March 2002. He has been an outstanding Manager.

The announcement confirms widely reported speculation yesterday that Moyes will assume arguably the daunting twin tasks of succeeding the world's most successful manager at the helm of England's biggest and most successful club. He signs a six-year contract and will take charge of his final two games with the Blues against West Ham on Sunday and Chelsea the following week before calling time on 11 years at Goodison Park.

Moyes described the task of filling Ferguson's shoes an honor but also paid tribute to the club he leaves behind having established himself as one of the most admired managers in the game.

"It's a great honour to be asked to be the next Manager of Manchester United. I am delighted that Sir Alex saw fit to recommend me for the job."

"I have had a terrific job at Everton, with a tremendous chairman and Board of Directors and a great set of players. Between now and the end of the season, I will do everything in my power to make sure we finish as high as possible in the table.

"Everton's fantastic fans have played a big part in making my years at Goodison so enjoyable and I thank them wholeheartedly for the support they have given me and the players. Everton will be close to me for the rest of my life."

Meanwhile, Everton Chairman, Bill Kenwright, must begin in earnest the not insignificant task of finding Moyes's replacement. Wigan Athletic manager, Roberto Martinez, has been installed as the bookmakers' early favourite, while Swansea City's Michael Laudrup, ex-Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill, Celtic manager Neil Lennon, and former Goodison striker Mark Hughes have also been mooted as being on the shortlist of candidates.

It is not clear how firm the Board's list of candidates is, however. Though Moyes's decision to leave his deliberations over a new deal at Everton until the end of this season pointed more and more towards the possibility that he would be leaving Goodison this summer, reports yesterday suggested that Kenwright was not prepared for the news that his manager was about to accept the role at Manchester United.

And now on to our problem of finding a replacement.

Thanks Mr Moyes for halting the decline of the 90s and making us challengers again. In a more equitable financial league without the sky cash ruining the league as a competition I'm sure we'd have won 2 or 3 titles in the last few years, Moyes would now be heading to Barca and we'd be plucking a manager from Man Utd.

A fantastic club with a great history, great supporters and a decent squad should be a draw for many a manager. However when you throw in Blue Bill at the helm and no cash to spend it worries me who we will end up with!

Reminds me of an old manager of mine who, when recruiting for an open position, once said "I've got the best candidate for the job. He fits all the criteria...he is cheap and available!"

He will get a massive send off on sunday and I for one thinks he deserves that. Whether you supported him or not, He has been a great manager at this club even if not a sucessful one. He shown loyalty, shrewd management and best of us he epitimised what I love about this club. For all his flaws he deserves us to give him a massive send off and I hope we do.
Jim Knightley
35 Posted 09/05/2013 at 14:52:17
He deserves a send off in his last home match. He has rejuvenated this club, and leaves it in a much better position now than eleven years ago. Some will be angry, some sad, but I don't think anyone can deny he has improved us without money. We just need to make sure we beat West Ham, and confirm sixth, and bring in the right replacement quickly.

We'll probably have to go to OT first thing in 2013/14 :( You know how the "fixture computer" likes to play games).

Either that or it'll be first home game after we've played Swansea at the Lib on day one after nabbing Laudrup.

Surely we can't have United (H) opening game two years on the trot?

It's going to be one of those

Kenwright looked shell-shocked on SKY, Moyes skipped up the stairs with a wry smile and the look of renewed impetus and vitality with the shackles of working under financial constraints removed. Manchester United have an infrastructure in place at board level that dictates their every move and strategy either comercially or on the playing staff. Everton appear amateurish in comparison with bungling Bill et al. I truly worry about the next few weeks and how Everton's recruitment merry-go-around will be played out in the recruitment process of Moyes successor.

Well, I was surprised Man U went for him, but they have obviously done their homework so I wish him luck, and perhaps he'll prove he can win tin pots with a bit more backing from a board.

Even if he'd delivered CL qualification this season, he couldn't turn down the opportunity to manage the biggest team globally.

I'm sure Man U wanted this kept quiet till season end, obviously someone spilled on Tuesday. (They're yet to confirm DM officially!) I'm also sure this was planned way before the news about Fergie's hip replacement. Therefore the board should've had plenty of time to work out a shortlist, and start the groundwork.

The only crumb of comfort is with his heatshield gone, BK will be shown up for the carpet bagger he is. I can only hope we don't fall too far before we're finally rid of that regime and able to start to rebuild.

Well, I can't say that I'm surprised... but then again, I'm not shattered either. This could be a positive move for Everton as it's a chance for new ideas and a fresher approach. But then again, someone once told me "better the devil you know..."

For what it's worth, good luck Moyes. And thank you for the memories - the sparse jubilation, the frequent frustration and for the moments of magic along the way... There may be no silverware in the cabinet, no statue at Goodison but I think in general, history will judge you positively...

Feel gutted.

David Moyes was the best thing at Everton FC. The fact that he has gone to Man Utd just makes me feel worse. At Everton he has made average players into top notch ones and has worked magic in the confines of a very, very limited budget.

The Everton fans that appreciate the financial state of the club will recognise that David Moyes has done incredible. Do I wish him luck in his next job ?? Absolutely not !! But there is no denying the fact that United are getting a very, very good manager.

The next manager ???

Martinez for certain would take us down.

Whoever it is I just hope that the board make the right choice. Everton is no ordinary club and a lot of thought must go into it.

A very nervous Everton fan !!!

He should leave now. The whole thing leaves a nasty taste. Did United only contact him on Tuesday night? No! They would have been sounding him out/tapping him up (whichever you prefer) for months. So all his talk about "I'll decide at the end of January" " I'll make my decision at the end of the season depending on how we finish" was, I believe, utter bollocks.
If Kenwright and Elstone had more than the business sense of a fucking rocking horse they'd have suspected this and put something in place to ensure we got something approaching reasonable compensation. As it is, just like with Rooney, we've allowed the richest club in the world to rob us blind again.
The fact that Moyes is, I believe the only Everton manager to leave us for another club is confirmation, if there was indeed any doubt, just how far down Kenwright and his cronies on the board have taken us over the past twenty years. Part of me doesn't care who we get in as a new manager - until we get rid of this disgrace of an owner and his know-nothing board the future looks dismal.

I have a mixture of feelings. Sad he's gone, scared about who will be appointed, yet some of the candidates that are available, I am a bit excited.

I just hope Kenwright gets this next appointment right. No has been managers, and I see the essence in a continuation of the set up, but Neville has no managing experience, that would be a nightmare if he is appointed.

Martinez or Laudrup, who the BBC said we want, would be good enough for me I think.

Personally I think the man has been a credit to and huge asset for the club. With a virtually negligible net spend he has taken us from relegation fodder to knocking on the European door. A real shame he never won a trophy but nonetheless he can leave with his head held high as he takes up arguably the biggest seat in football management.

The next man in may well play a better brand of football but he (or she?) will do very well to match Moyes consistently high league finishes. Hopefully we get someone who can mix attractive football with grinding out results and operating wisely in the transfer market.

Spotlight on you now BK. Don't f**k this up!

Billy Boy will go for the cheapest option....be prepared for the Ferguson (Duncan I mean)/Weir/Stubbs managerial team !!!...Kenwright will spin some shit about them being Everton through & through...I can just hear it now...more shiite about how these true Evertonians can finish the job Moyes started...more shite about searching for investment 24/7 blah blah blah...or just as bad appointing Round cos he's familiar with Moyes' methods

I've never been a lover of Moyes but I do acknowledge the stability he's brought and salute the fact we are no longer annual relegation battlers...so I do thank him for that...it looks as tho' even Moyes has become tired of Billy's bullshit and has done one as all the pro-Moyes heads on here feared he would do eventually.

I ask any Evertonian this question now that Moyes is gone... Do you have ANY confidence in Kenwright & his gang of Cronies appointing the right man to take over ??? or to take this club forward ???...my answer is a resounding NO FUCKING CHANCE !!

I personally would like Laudrup but I bet a pound to a pinch of shit we'll end up with a team like the one mentioned above or someone like Mark Hughes and that my friends will be the end of this club and a very quick return to the Walter years !!!

Kenwright you are destroying this club before our very eyes PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE FUCK OFF and take your board of nomarks with you...!!!

I hope he gets a good send off. With little or no resources against clubs with significantly deeper pockets, he has consistently got us to the edge of Europe. That he couldn't take us there more is due to Newcastle, Spurs and Liverpool buying every available player before us with BIG wages. Ohh and two of them are below us and one just above.. so he hasn't done bad.

Those who called him dithering Dave.. only a couple of big mistakes, not bad for Prem manager when compared to the flops at some clubs, and the youth everyone talks about... well apart from Rooney... none are tearing up trees, so MAYBE he knew a little of what he talked about.

Do I wish him luck... No.. cos he is joining a rival and I hope we beat them every time we play them... but can I say thank you for restoring a little pride.... yes. Not always the best football, but at least we weren't relegation fodder each year.

Let''s just hope it's not a replacement on the cheap. Too many nightmares without jobs at the moment..

Cheers Davey you kept is afloat but I do hope you get relegated next year but not along with us!

Bilic please. Poyet wouldn't be bad but he has stated he wants to go to Chelsea eventually. Ole Gunnar could do ten years before we let him join Utd.

Is Howard Kendall sober? Bring back Joe Royal? Me? Eugene? Dodd? (not ken) Ron Atkinson? George Graham?

Oh fuck it, whoever we want the manager will get appointed.

Rooney - player manager?... stop it!

Brenda: "I have a desire to join Everton" ... "Yeah, okay, but you will be in charge for the remaining fixtures?"

Wenger: "I want to leave to join Chelsea" ... "Oh ok, Arsene, see you at The Emirates on Sunday."

AVB: "I want to leave to join Man City" ... "Yeah no probs, AVB – I'll see you at the Lane next home game."

It wouldn't happen and it wouldn't happen at most clubs with any pride or substance – no matter how much they had done at the club.

For all those fans who wanted David Moyes out it seems to me they should ask themselves: Why? The greatest manager that the Premier League has, and will ever have, recommended DM for one one of the top jobs in the Premier League.

DM has had a lot of criticism over the years but the main theme has always been how good could he have been if given funds at the right times, ie, January this year. As supporters, we should all offer thanks to DM for moving Everton from relegation positions to a respectable position in the league.

A final note: Whoever is appointed as Everton manager, he will have a huge task of rebuilding as at least two top players will be gone and a number of older players are not good enough and unless they are given a huge transfer kitty that will show how hypocritical this pathetic board and chairman are, Everton will have a long hard season next year.

I don't think that this is news to Kenwright at all. I don't think there is any coincidence between Pip's announced retirement earlier this season, and Moyes leaving. Moyes has been lauding his managerial and leadership skills for some time now. It looks worryingly nailed on for me....

Never been his biggest fan but he did bring stabillity.

Watch the wheels now fall off the Kenwright regime, the cracks will appear and he will go into hiding as usual.

Unless he gets some finance sorted and makes the right appointment I fear the worst.

Didn't Arsenal let their best player go to United in the summer? Or Fabregas talk about his love for Barca, whilst an Arsenal captain?

Of course stuff like this happens. Moyes has gone from 6th place to first...he hasnt joined a near rival. It has been decided quickly, and Moyes is out of contract in six weeks. We have a couple of relatively meaningless games left.

Clap him when he returns to Goodison with Man U by all means.

But a send off now, that is just not right. The man has agreed to become the next manager of another club whilst still pretending to be our manager.
He should just go now.

As a club we should be concentrating on how we move forward, who will be the next manager etc etc not preparing fanfares for someone who is leaving us for another club.

None of the above detracts from the job Moyes has done for us, it is not about that. But I stress again it is not right to give him a send off in this manner. Have we no self respect?

Paul Ferry

Looking at it from the other side of the fence, it seems that Man-U fans are delighted to have Mr. Moyes as their new gaffer:

(From http://www.redcafe.net/f6/Moyes-succeed-ferguson-anyone-74640/index40.html)

Fuck Off Moyes your not wanted here. Nowhere near good enough for us.

I 'm preparing a Moyes Out banner as we speak.

Long ball football here we go

Such an uninspiring choice. No experience of winning trophies, no experience of dealing with big players, no CL experience. It's a massive gamble if he is chosen and if he doesn't start well he will be under immense pressure.

It's like going from cashmere to polyester.

We're fucked.

We will never win the league under Moyes. Fact.

Sack Moyes, Sell Anichebe.

Moyes doesn't like flair players does he?

Disastrous move for the club.

Exactly, cheap and easy appointment, won't command huge wages. It's extremely disappointing.

As much as I like Moyes and all that he has done for my club. This move has got disaster written all over it. Utd could almost have a choice of any top coach in the world and yet they chose David Moyes?! He won't last 2 seasons.

Evertons style of football isn't good to watch, Moyes doesn't really get on with flair players, has a terrible record in europe. Massive no from me.

Not looking forward to the Moyes era.

That's what I don't get, anybody can see he's nowhere near the calibre we should be looking at. Honestly a mind boggling decision if the rumours are true.

The more and more I think about it the worse I think this decision could be.

Michael Kenrick
113 Posted 09/05/2013 at 15:26:05
I was trying to recall if Moyes is the first serving Everton manager to join another rival club — and for it to be seen as an upward move. I think from that perspective it is unprecedented... and says so much about how far we have fallen on Kenwright's watch.
Drew O'Neall
114 Posted 09/05/2013 at 15:23:42
Good luck and thanks.

Now for the business at hand, now that our ambitious manager who dredged every penny out of the board has left (players and his wages mainly), it's time to have a clear out and get Everton's finances back on an even keel and that means reducing the wages and living within our means so that we have a club in another 11 years time.

Unfortunately that probably means fending off relegation for a couple of years with a load of youngsters - over to Zola, Mackay, etc (Mark Hughes has got a fucking nerve)

Chris Regan
115 Posted 09/05/2013 at 15:13:23
Yeah, I don't understand why he is getting the last two games, let him on the pitch or let him fuk off to united. No need for nostalgia, he has had a load of cash from us and will tap our players. He left an old squad, little youth prospects and ginger pubes in the urinal. If he fucks up at utd and Kenwright dusk his replacement up then would he come back?

I don't lik Kenwright, but for those who didn't se him on sky last night he was genuinely she'll shocked. I know some will say he was acting, but you obviously never seen those clips of him on Corrie, he can't act to save his life.

Andrew Clare

Everton desperately need a strong leader. BK is an embarrassment to the club and the fans. Moyes should have been given an ultimatum once he decided not to sign a new deal. He should not be here for the last two games as he doesn't want to be here he wants to manage another club. What is going on at Everton!

God I wish John Moores was still Chairman! He wouldn't believe what is going on at the moment. We have got to get all of these people out of our club they are a disgrace.

I can't believe that we have been a mediocre team for 11 years and people are worried about Moyes leaving! I don't know what the same people would have felt like when Howard Kendall left the first time.

Lastly, please please do not choose a British manager as there isn't a good one out there.

Sad to see him go and wish him every success in the future as should every other Evertonian in my view. Despite my fears that this could lead to dire times ahead I can also see that a change could be of great benefit though I think this will depend on who we get as his replacement. What worries me is who this will be and have no faith really in any of the names being linked so far. Mark Hughes, Martin O'Neill and Neil Lennon are definitely no nos in my view and if I had to go with someone I think maybe Laudrup would be the best choice. Though I like Martinez as a person and the way his teams play I think there are doubts as his ability to be a success at this level though maybe if we did go for him the gamble may come off, as we did actually gamble on DM when he was appointed. Truly hope this is not the dawn before the dark.

Moyes and Kenwright knew about this a year ago - and in my opinion was probably the reason we did shit all in the January window as any funds were to be held back till the end of the season

I'm sorry but this smacks of a major cover up the board knew and let us spend on renewing season tickets - guaranteed that the next Manager will be so bad that we will quickly revert back to mid table obscurity

As for staying for two games having announced you are leaving is out of order on the fans players etc - you could not make this up - the line only in America should be changed to only at Everton !!

What's the difference between what Dan Gosling did and what Moyes has done? Both acutely aware of how skint we are, both know they had a market value, and both ran down their contact and left for nothing.

I blame Billy Bullshit for allowing this to continue to happen to the club. Why can't he learn from his mistakes?

Chris Fisher
131 Posted 09/05/2013 at 15:29:29
Oh shit. This is bad bad news.

I'm glad he will be in charge for the last 2 games, after what he has done for this club he deserves a proper thank you. I was so pissed off when Tim Cahill left and we didn't get the chance to give him a proper send-off after all he had done for us.

To those fans who think this is a good thing, come back on here in one year from today and I guarantee you will finally see just how much David Moyes did for this club. All the talk is of if Moyes is good enough to fill Alex Ferguson's boots but he will do just fine — the really big question is who is good enough to fill Moyes's boots at Goodison? — and I honestly don't think there is anyone.

I believe we will start to slide down the table, not quite bad enough to be relegated but nowhere near good enough to challenge in the top half of the table. I hope I'm wrong but I wont be.

Dan " How stupid some people look when he wins trophies" You know what's funny Dan,all those managers of the top teams who win trophies are labelled with buying those trophies because of the money they spend, so now Moyes will have money to burn, doesn't he now just become one of those managers if he wins trophies that are always slagged off on here?

Looking forward to LMAO at Moyes in 12 months, glad hes gone :D As for the next two games, he should be shown the door immediatly, I wouldnt even allow him to clean out his desk. Put Dunc in charge for two games then look for a new manager.

He shouldn't be allowed back into the Everton setup now he has made his decision. He will have the opportunity to speak to the players convincing them to join him at Old Trafford, it's like we are some kind of feeder club. I've been a big supporter of Moyes on this site and Im grateful for the fact e stabilised us and cemented us as a top half team after a period of decline and with no investment. But there is no way he should be allowed to be manager for the last two games of the season. He should be immediately placed on garden leave or allowed to go to Man U. He wants to leave us and so he should do that not expect us to warmly wave him off whilst we still have 6 points to play for and 6 points that now mean nothing to him. Put someone else in charge for the last 2 games.

Moyes did his stint, so I don't feel that way towards him. He's been good for us and did his time. He moves with no ill will from me.

There better be a contingency plan in place here, seeing as this has been on the cards for the last 11 fckin years. Can't see it though. Boys-Pen Billy and his merry gang too busy trying to sell the club. Apparently.

The way this will work out is as follows: Bent Bill will spin us a few lines that he tried to get Laudrup but he did his good finger signing off the medical and the club just couldn't take the risk as that finger will be needed to hold the pen to make all the new big name signings. But Mark Hughes came through with flying colours and will save the club a few quid - be happy about that blues - cos he's available now.

I'll be booing him on Sunday. His lasting impression will be negative tactics and playing one up front for ten years.

I fear for Everton under Kenwright. He's the worst chairman possible who hasn't got a clue about business or football or anything really. He's sold all the assets and ran up a massive debt. Our decline may now accelerate with this board. We are going to end up a small club with BK at the helm.

Mark, players and managers are wholly different, and have different financial values. Moyes asked for money...and wasn't given it, and was under no moral, or legal obligation, after 11 years, to sign a contract. He didn't exploit a loophole...he didnt try and hold the club to ransom, by demanding a massive wage increase. He left fairly, and his departure will only effect the last two matches of the season, which will be irrelevant unless we somehow contrive to lose sixth.

Just to add also I do expect alot of Managers to turn us down after talks with Bill. Our history, traddition and standing in the game seem to stand for little these days. Even the club want appear to want to drop the motto that os meant to define the club! As I said earlier Managers now expect money flowing their way to spend. Oh to be a fly on the wall during any interviews!

Clive and Chris...you actually think Alex Ferguson...perhaps the most competitive manager in football, decided to retire for months, before his 20th league title was confirmed? and that all Moyes' comments, about wanting to manage in Bundesliga etc, have been some smoke and mirrors game?

Seriously....

Brian 229, I am certain that some will now move the goalposts and say 'he only wins because he spends money'. Which is ironically what many of us here suggested, give him some money and he will win trophies. He never had that opportunity, and now he is gone.

Those who stated:

'why would he leave? Best job in the Premier league. He will stay here forever'

'He will NEVER get a chance at a big club'

'He will NEVER win a trophy'

now appear to be trying to save face, by deflecting blame onto the board. Very predictable.

I think Moyes has done a good job again this season, and got us the best placement money we could get when looking at our squad. So I am quite happy he has stayed to the end of the season, as at least the next manager can benefit from that money, and not start with his hands already tied.

From a principle perspective, he should not lead the last two games. But from a realistic perspective, he is the best man at the club to manage the teams for the last two games. Even if you do have Stubbs or A. Nother leading, it will be Moyes calling the shots from behind anyway. I think Moyes will be desperate to ensure we finish above Liverpool in his last season.

I think it is United that have fucked this up, by calling Fergies retirement this week. Why? For what purpose could they not wait until end of the season? Completely unprofessional and unnecessary in my opinion.

Kevin - we all have the right to our own opinions. If you don't want to partake in the discussion of our differing opinions then perhaps this isn't the place for you?

I'm hoping to make it to the West Ham game on Sunday to give Moyes, what I hope will be, a big send-off.

He has given ten years service to the club, improved the side, fulfilled his contractual requirements and most of all, I think he's genuinely tried and been as frustrated as anybody about the shortcomings of the board.

That's not to say he's been perfect - after all he's won nothing, but he's moved us forward and given us back some respect - both in terms of results, and the way we conduct our business on and off the pitch.

That is why I will be cheering Moyes on Sunday. And I believe he's the only man who should be in charge for the last two games of the season. I would hope and imagine that the majority of our players will want to give him a decent send-off too.

Fergie has been very shrewd in all of this. He has had a huge say in who his successor is and so put his weight behind appointing his huge admirer DM.

He won't complain about the ex-manager sitting in an office down the corridor dispensing advice on how to run the club and having a big say in players contracts and what players are bought. That wouldn't have sat well with Mourinho, he fell out with Abramovich over too much interference.

This deal was sorted out months ago, Moyes got the nod from Fergie not to sign a new contract and blind Bill let it happen as he foolishly thought his great mate DM would never leave him. Isn't he supposed to be a successful businessman? Amateur mistake

Contracts do not take less than 24hrs to write up, get reviewed by numerous solicitor/agent types and then signed. It just doesn't happen, ever. This was done a long time ago. I'm sure if Ferguson had not won the title, Moyes would have signed a 1 year contract at Everton. Man Utd / Fergie knew they had the title sewn up by the end of January.

I was one of those who thought he'd never get that job, seeing that no other big club had come in for him over the years and that he'd never won a trophy. But you know what? I'm very happy I'm wrong, I think they've made a big mistake. We will now see how good Moyes is.

I can't see why it's wrong to applaud Moyes on Sunday for all he has done for the club, and would ask if it's wrong to applaud Moyes on Sunday then why is it right to applaud Arteta when he turns out for Arsenal against us? Welcome back Pienaar like the prodigal son, quite happy for Fellaini to keep playing while his agent tells us he would like to play for Chelsea.

So, on that basis, Moyes will deserve a good send off.

Yes Moyes is a decent bloke. But:

(1) the strategic and now clearly deceitful statements about waiting until the summer. Okay, I don't know for sure, but does anyone seriously believe that he has not known about this for a while now?

(2) hanging on for 2 more games instead of resigning on the spot, for what? To make sure that he gets paid in May and June

(3) Never mind the last two games - he joins Man-U on July-1, will we be paying his weekly wage up until then, and for what? So that he can prepare for next season

(4) Knowing our vulnerable financial state he will swoop on Leighton, Felli, and, I think, Jags

Okay, this might not all work out the way I am suggesting. But what the last 2 days and I would say few months have shown is that DM is a ruthless, hard-nosed, self-centred professional.

In my opinion, Moyes should leave now if that is the case. The atmosphere will be dodgy to say the least for the last two games. It would make more sense to go now and let Sheedy or Big Dunc take over for the remainder of the season. It would give them a taste of first team management and results wouldn't matter because 6th is virtually guaranteed. Makes perfect sense!

Moyes has been far, far more than a manager at Everton - he has rebuilt the club from virtual ruins and given us our dignity back.

Magnificent achievement, gave his all and has far more than earned his chance to show what he can do with a wages bill twice that under his control at Everton and of course the financial muscle to have who he wants. I can see him doing very well indeed and staying for many years if he is given 2 years to win something big.

I'd like Everton to find another of his ilk maybe from the Championship - I hope he has already given Kenwright a shortlist. No need to kneejerk reaction appointments of those who constantly fight relegation or who have had one good year. We need another who will carry one building in the new financial era we are about to begin and stay for another 10 years.

I actually find it very comparable Jim, when people say he has had nothing to spend it is not quite the truth. I will say he brought stability but that's it, certainly no Everton legend, never has been, vastly overrated.

The ex-gaffer's statement:

It’s a great honour to be asked to be the next Manager of Manchester United. I am delighted that Sir Alex saw fit to recommend me for the job. I have great respect for everything he has done and for the Football Club.

“I know how hard it will be to follow the best manager ever, but the opportunity to manage Manchester United isn’t something that comes around very often and I’m really looking forward to taking up the post next season.

“I have had a terrific job at Everton, with a tremendous chairman and Board of Directors and a great set of players. Between now and the end of the season, I will do everything in my power to make sure we finish as high as possible in the table.

“Everton’s fantastic fans have played a big part in making my years at Goodison so enjoyable and I thank them wholeheartedly for the support they have given me and the players. Everton will be close to me for the rest of my life.”

Sorry Colin, I'm not using the term bitter how our kopshite neighbours use it, some of us are just sounding very bitter about the exit. Surely we can't begrudge him going to them? If he'd gone to Villa then I would have been screaming for blood but I just can't fault him for this.

Moyes is not our manager anymore - he has decided to move on so should we. He has been paid a fortune by Everton and the club or rather Kenshite has told Moyes to carry on as normal for the next two game. What a joke we have become do you think Man Utd would allow that if the tables where turned ?

Well I for one will not be cheering from the rooftops on Sunday - this has been planned out over the months since the contract issue arose.

Wake up everyone Moyes does'nt care about us anymore - lets hope he doesnt get into Fellaini,Baines and Jags in his remaining games. What would the IMWT brigade think of seeing them all in a manc shirt .

Announcing his successor, Sir Alex Ferguson said:

"When we discussed the candidates that we felt had the right attributes we unanimously agreed on David Moyes. David is a man of great integrity with a strong work ethic. I've admired his work for a long time and approached him as far back as 1998 to discuss the position of Assistant Manager here. He was a young man then at the start of his career and has since gone on to do a magnificent job at Everton. There is no question he has all the qualities we expect of a manager at this Club.”

Sir Bobby Charlton said:

“I have always said that we wanted the next manager to be a genuine Manchester United man. In David Moyes, we have someone who understands the things that make this such a special club. We have secured a man who is committed to the long-term and will build teams for the future as well as now. Stability breeds success.

“David has tremendous strength of character and recognises the importance of bringing young players through and developing them alongside world class talent. At United, I think David will be able to express himself. I’m delighted he has accepted and I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Ed Woodward, said:

“In David Moyes, we have secured the services of an outstanding manager who has all the skills to build on the phenomenal legacy in place today. I have no doubt that he will bring an energy and commitment to deliver winning football that is part of the fabric of this Club. In this respect, he is cut from the same cloth as the Old Trafford greats who go before him.

“I have been very impressed by David’s personal and managerial traits, which reflect the Manchester United values. I have no doubt that he will embrace, and soon become an integral part of, United’s unique culture and heritage.”

Joel Glazer said:

“I am very pleased David has agreed to lead Manchester United into the future. His hard working style and steely determination and are characteristics we value at the Club. He has impressed as a coach for many years now and we strongly believe he will be able to take up from where Alex is leaving off by continuing this Club’s tradition of flair football played by exciting, world class players.”

Avie Glazer said:

“The search for a new manager has been very short. Alex was very clear with his recommendation and we are delighted that David has agreed to accept the job. He comes to us with excellent credentials and a strong track record. I know he is keen to get started and Ed will be sitting down with him as soon as the season is over to discuss plans for the summer and beyond."

David Gill said:

“I’m delighted that David has agreed to join Manchester United. He has done a terrific job at Everton and has all the qualities that we are looking for in a manager to succeed Alex.”

David Moyes said:

“It’s a great honour to be asked to be the next Manager of Manchester United.

With Moyes and Neville off, Fellaini almost certainly going, possibly Baines and hopefully that should make quite a large dent in the wage budget. If the next man in is able to bring in some good players prepared to play for reasonable (but not sky high wages) then we might just be able to start heading back towards profitablilty with the increased tv revenue.

That is the only way this club will return to where it should be. James #359...Moyes looked like a man who had just come out of prison with a big fat smile on his face running past the cameras as if to say " I'M FREE...I'M FREE !! "...thought he was about to start punching the air with delight

As for Kenwright....just seen him on SSN..his eyes were all filled up and he looked like he was about to start crying....the man is an embarrassment...says he had no idea this was going to happen or who will be OR who he wants to be next Everton manager....he is a SAD BUFFOON !!

Danny Jones

Personally, I'm sad to see him go. I think he's done a good job for us. He has certainly restored respectability (remember the dark days). Also, Everton have a dignity lacking in certain other clubs. This is, in large part, down to him.

I don't see any reason for him not to 'work' the last two matches of the season. This idea of gardening leave for anyone leaving a job makes no sense to me. The man's a professional and will do his job as he always has.

It is now over to Bill Kenwright and co. to make the most of this opportunity and make the right choice. I'd like to see either Martinez or Laudrup but if not I will support whoever gets the gig. We are not Liverpool and we are not Chelsea. I will support whoever manages our club.

Do you really think that it will stop us winning the Prem?, or the Champions league? The only times next season I hope that he has really bad luck are the two league meetings and when we play them at Wembley in the cups.

Fuck Moyes off right now — forget him being in charge for the last two games because this will have a totally negative effect on the players. What's his leaving present? Giving 6th spot to the fucking shite.

The Kenwright Out campaign should start right now to get him and the useless shower on the board out who never back the club. New manager... fuck me, we need a new chairman new board first. Whoever we get will only be appointed if they agree to the chairman and board demands which will be you spend fuck all... Kenwright out NOW.

I felt sick watching him in that interview, he's an idiot who doesn't inspire any confidence only fear. Mark Hughes? — You're having a fucking laugh, useless wherever he's been. Laudrup and Martinez are young ambitious and have a style of football which we want to see. Only appoint one of these though if their given the finanacial backing.

We have an ageing squad left by.... Won't mention his name again so we need strengthening in departments all over the team. Don't bother your arse turning up for the last two games, you muppet — you're no longer our manager, piss off.

David Moyes played his part in getting the club there, but after 11 years a fresh start for both parties was in order. I am just a bit surprised were Moyes' new challenge is.

Hope we give Moyes a nice send off against whu. Yes he has been infuriating at times and he is defenitely not an everton legend especially compared to past winning managers. But the club now is in a much better position than when he joined there's no doubt about that.

Hope he enjoys his time at utd and sorts out his awful record against the rs. On the other hand I hope our record against utd greatly improves! If we don't get our top targets of martinez or laudrup, am I the only one who wouldn't mind rafa? Even crazier than that does anyone else dream of us using potential fellaini money to bring back rooney? Who knows maybe he'll like an everton without Moyes.

I guess now we have to hope that our incompetent chairman does something he's never done, what's best for the club. Saw an interbiew with him on ssn choking back the tears as predicted. What an actor!

What's all the fuss about? Why so upset about a manager moving to utd? He is out of contract he can do what he wants.

Unfortunately the game has changed we are not a big club in today's game because we have no money. Moyes never won a trophy and he shouldn't have been expected to.

If anyone comes here and get's better results than Moyes did in the premiership then he will be nothing short of a miracle worker.

Untied are the most famous and one of the most successful teams in the world (puke) why wouldn't he want to go? He is a professional football manager. He was a Temporary Evertonian and overall a pretty good one.

Give him a clap on Sunday then when he's gone he can fuck off like any other rival manager.

What message is he sending out to the team oh forgot a Negative message just like his tactics have always been. Good rid to fucking rubbish negative football. Lets hope the muppet show at board level backs the new manager financially. I also have a conspiracy theory that this was known well in advance by Kenwright but didn't want to jeopardise season ticket sales. Kenwright and board have a new motto for use supporters up in the board ' Once a gullible supporter always a gullible supporter'. watch this space for all the bogus signings to calm the situation down or even better drag the new manager appointment out till the last minute and then declare not enough time to get anyone in. By celebrating Moyes at the next home game we are confirming to the world how far we've fallen and how we don't even believe in ourselves. It is a step up for Moyes but so what?

Would Arsenal fans cheer Wenger if he was leaving for Man Utd? Imagine if a manager left Liverpoolto go there.

If you clap him, you're basically saying: "Well done, for getting pluckily little Everton to seventh, we're only a small club, it doesn't matter you won us nothing. We have no intention of competing in this league anyway. We've all give up so don't blame you. Everyone should leave Everton if Man Utd come calling."

People booed our best post war player ever when he left for OT and he was just a kid, who was getting messed around by Moyes anyway. He's supposed to be going to a rival. What's the point in Everton as a club if we congratulate someone for leaving us to go to a rival???

The man did well for Everton, but now he works for the enemy. He was awful this season too! I will boo him on the basis that he will be trying to get six pts of us next season, after creating an air of uncertainty this season, when we needed strong attack-minded leadership!

And I don't care what anyone in the P C brigade think, I helped pay his wages for 11 years, and I'll be watching Everton long after he's left the game. Think about it: Even the timing of the announcement was to suit Ferguson and Man Utd — so SAF could get a send-off for his last game.

To be honest, the debate means nothing and I cannot be arsed explaining anymore.

I thank Moyes for IMPROVING us from a relegation side, and then stabilising us as perennial european challengers. He has built a good foundation for any new manager, compared to the squad he inherited.

My focus is on the future now, and hopefully seeing a manager coming in and building on what Moyes has done. I think in some ways the Everton job is more difficult than the United job. United have the finances to compete. Our new manager is going to have to compete without finances from the board, but only from his dealings in the transfer market. Whoever comes in, will have my full support until I have a reason to doubt that they are the right person for the club.

First, may I offer my commiserations to the Manchester United supporters for all your upcoming frustrations.

I would wish Moyes well but as the man left without HONOUR and integrity, negotiating his new job while still PRETENDING he was intent on keeping his present one and offering pathetic and increasingly bizarre EXCUSES for not negotiating . So because of that treachery I hope he falls flat on his face ASAP. For this deceit and unprincipled action. I blame both HIM, SAF and the Manchester United Management as it was quite clearly a result of their collusion and exemplifies the lack of respect for EFC and their supporters on ALL their parts.

BK comes out of this as a pathetic, stupid, limp wristed wimp who could not see the writing on the wall when it was blindingly obvious as Moyes excuses became even more pathetic and one can only hope he finds a real and competent MANAGER to take up the reins at Everton and not some cheapskate friend of a friend.

I would hope that Everton supporters let the TRAITOR Moyes know just what they think of his deceitful dealings should he dare to show his face again at Goodison. If they give him a rousing send off then I will have serious doubts about the ability of match going supporters to see exactly what has transpired and how underhanded and dirty it all has been.

Kenwright your interview was pure theatre you blubbering fool. "Listening to the supporters," — you're taking the piss, when have you ever listened to the supporters? Remember the Kings Dock? All the so called buyers lining up to buy us? And how you sold off the training complex? And all the merchandise deals to kitbag? And all the shit about money available to strengthen the team? What a fucking joke.

You have never listened to the supporters in all the time you have been in charge of our club. I can just see the interviews now for the next manager:

1) What's your vision?
2) Can you keep us up?
3) Can you manage on fuck all?
4) Bosman and loans, yes?
5) How good are you at telling lies?
6) The job's yours.

Time to worry like fuck.

Tim Jones - what a complete and utter load of garbage. Some people just bewilder me with their lack of good grace and class.

Moyes has given us loyalty, commitment, excellent leadership and improved league positions for an 11 year period, and all with a huge amount of class, dignity and respect - and all you can trot out is pretend rage when you never wanted him here anyway.

Personally, I wish him all the very best and he is entitled to go to Man U with our good wishes after the service he has given us.

Tim, if I may make a prediction - I bet you will be one of the first on this site to complain about the "failings" of whoever it is that replaces Moyes.

I can see Moyes taking Baines with him, and Pip, but not anyone else. He would be wary of being accused of raiding his former club. Everton have a good squad now, and with the likes of Coleman, etc, we can continue to prosper if we find the right manager.

Jim # 132, I've lived in Porto for a while and I don't fancy Victor Pereira, the Porto manager, that much, even though he won the League last season and could still win it again this season. He has a total lack of charisma and is afraid to take chances (I know you're probably going to say this sounds like a description of the departing DM ;-) ).

Pereira was Andre Villas-Boas number two, and succeeded him when AVB joined Chelsea. Most Porto supporters never took to him.

I think Michael Laudrup would be a much better appointment.

Moyes has been loyal to us you can't begrudge him that. Villa and spurs have wanted him but he stuck with us. However that is mainly because he was holding out for this job and has been for years. There are theories being flung around that he always knew he was getting this which is why he didn't sign and that is probably spot on.

Thanks to bullshit bill we've come out of this looking very weak. Moyes and united have really pulled a fast one on us. He's signing at the end of his contract which means we're getting feck all for someone we payed an extortionate 3 million a year for for 5 years. And bill let this happen cos he thinks with his heart not his brain. If he fucks up the search for a new manager the blue union should defenitely take an active role in getting rid of this good for nothing shyster and his friends. Just like those "spirit of shankley" pricks did with hicks and gillet.

He must have realized how badly he screwed this up last night when he "had a cup of tea..... and walked his dogs"

I agree Rich - 471 - Moyes ought to be clearing up his desk and take his Billy Joel box-sets with him. Caretaker for last 2 games. Total lack of class from Kenwright - expected - and Moyes - not expected. It's quite frankly bizarre that he will stay to the end of the season, bizarre.

Have to agree with those saying Moyes should not be in charge of any aspect at Everton between now and the official end of his contract.

It is clear that Moyes has not been totally committed to EFC for most of this season, hedging his bets for a better offer. This could have been Germany or elsewhere, but, once Ferguson decided to retire (which will have been some time ago) I believe they reached an agreement in secret and Moyes continued to flannel about European qualification as cover.

I mailed last December that Moyes should sign a new contract to stabilise the Club and worse case allow EFC to claim compensation should he get poached. Instead he made sure it was as easy as possible for any other Club to come in for him.

For someone who spouted many times about his principles, honesty and integrity it smacks of rank hypocrisy.

It's a great shame, a sour taste is left, adding to my ever increasing cynicism of the game.

Moyes may have brought us some semblance of stability, and we achieved reasonable top-half table finishes, but I like watching good football. I like to be entertained.. As well as being an Everton supporter, I am also a football supporter. as are (I assume) most of the contributors to TW. Everton were once known as the "School of Science" — there was a reason for that.

I have not been entertained by quality football while Moyes has been our manager. In any one season, the most you'd've witnessed is perhaps half-a-dozen decent games, the rest was garbage.

I'm so glad he's gone, and I don't care where he's gone to. I just hope, whoever we get, will result in Everton returning to playing entertaining attractive football.

Apologies if any of this has been said before, but I got bored and annoyed reading some comments, and gave up after about 200.

I think people need some perspective.

To all those moaning about the way DM's departure is being managed, with him being in charge here until the end of the season, and likewise SAF at OT.. this situation is almost unique in English football in modern times. Rather than it be the case of a knee-jerk sacking followed by a desperate scramble to get a new man in rightaway, you have two stable clubs MANAGING TRANSITION. In one case, one of the biggest clubs in the world managing the departure at age 71 of a man who has enjoyed more success than any other manager EVER has. On the other hand you have a huge club with a proud tradition whose steady helmsman of 11 years who, despite what some people here think, is so highly thought of elsewhere that said other massive club has prepared to offer DM a 6 year contract ahead of practically any other manager in the world - 99% of whom would come running if OPT whistled for them.

So, to sumarise, this is a very usual situation. And if we've learned nothing else about DM in the last 11 years, we know him to be thoroughly professional and of a rather special integrity as far as most managers goes. He will try his best for us in these upcoming games and I for one will not be surprised if they return us 4 or 6 points.

Now, onto his replacement. I know Billy is a huge disappointment. However, and regarding this man who we have to replace - you know the one a certain globally massive club has just given a six year contract - who gave him the Everton job in the first place, much to the surprise of many? When it comes to appointing managers, BK has thus far had it 100% spot on. Let's wait and see who he goes for next. His first pick of DM has at least entitled him to another shot!

As for who we might get... to those who doubt anyone of any substance would want to come here; ask yourself, 'how did the last chap do?' Any manager with balls and ambition ought to say to themselves, 'I too can go to this grand old club and show, by what I can achieve there, that I also am worthy to be considered good enough to replace someone like SAF'. And that is NOT IN ANY WAY a slight on our club. Just name me any manager in English football besides Chapman, Clough or Paisley who can be likened to SAF. Credit where credit is due. If DM can come here, do a job for 11 years and then get offered SAF's seat, who wouldn't take that as a sign that our club is just as good as any other in England for a man with ambition?!

Good luck Mr Moyes sir. I've been proud of what you did for our club, especially the fact you have done it with dignity and integrity - for example, the way you handled the Rooney court case, and the way you're prepared to come out instantly and criticise players who behave badly - e.g. Fellaini's head-buts at Stoke and Pip's embarrassing dive. We are "the people's club", and I believe, contrary to may people on here, you were "the people's manager".

Adieu.

fuck me we haven't played attractive football since 1987...but Moyes was the first manager since Kendall to provide stability and improvement over any length of time.

This needs to be a bloody good appointment next. Otherwise we could end up very quickly in that bottom to mid tier of the league in which we're never too far away from a dog fight ala Villa, Sunderland, Newcastle.

What scares me is that there is no manager with premiership experience, a track record of top 6 finishes, and getting their sides playing attractive football who'd give us a second look.
I hear names like Bilic and Mackay and I just think Mike Walker. But we're almost certainly going to take a punt on someone. Do you trust Bill not to put the final nail in the coffin?

People just want winning football. The new manager could come and play the msot broing style of football in the world (Benitez) but if it wins everyone will be happy. Martinez could come with his fancy stuff but as soon as he starts losing the style in which he loses will count for nothing. Losing away at top sides is annoying - but if we start to lose consistently at home I dread to think what will start on here. I hope the new manager wins more consistently then Moyes did for his own sake.

"consistent relegation fodder to consistent European challengers"

It's all about age, perspective and what you've been fortunate to have experienced as a Blue - that tempers your opinion of "consistent" etc

Since the 50s, two terrifying near-misses with relegation and a few seasons in the 90s of anxiously looking at the last games on the fixture list

I watched as we became the first English club to complete in European competiions in 5 consecutive years
I've experienced 4 League titles, 3 FA Cups, regular semi-finals and had the pleasure of being a youngster watching the great 66-70 sides and an adult following the mid-80s team

In the main, it's been decent, the highs of the 60s, 80s offset with the 90s

I don't support David Moyes or the manager of any other team; I support Everton

We lost our way; he steadied the ship, made us solid and hard to beat and almost overcame the deficiencies of the Everton chairman and Board

So, thank you for all that, Mr Moyes

I knew it would be bad, reading this comments section on ToffeeWeb, but I was strangely drawn here, why I'm not really sure because its bloody depressing stuff. I'm picturing a line of EFC fans between Goodison and Old Trafford, Davey Moyes slowly walking to his new job, flowers being thrown in his path, and a mix of applause and crying. For pity's sake, more often than not the contributors to these pages (including moi) slagged the guy off for being, variously, and not necessarily at the same time, over-cautious, hesitant, ultra defensive, useless at making subs, moody, sullen, poor with the media, not stylish, over-rated and above all, BKs reason for living and his only chance of remaining chairman. Etc etc etc.

I can't understand the feelings of impending disaster. Apparently we are now certain to be relagated next season. Ok, we have done much better than we had a right to expect in terms of where we usually finish in the league, a few good cup runs, and yes, we can be grateful that we are generally regarded now as top six. This is surely some kind of decent achievement in view of the fact that for his entire tenure we have been, and remain, virtually the worst resourced Premiership club over the last 11 years. Everyone spends more, net, than we do. We have nearly always had the smallest squad in the league to the point where, absurdly, we have school kids on the bench and when anyone is carrying an injury, knackered, or just bloody useless, they have to play because there simply isn't anyone else on the roster.

Moyes has driven me to distraction at times and I will never forgive him that appalling mis judgement last year at Anfield or the rabbit in headlights performance at Wembley, twice. You could add some horrendous Cup exits and at times some of the least appealing football it's possible to watch, sometimes.....but.....you tend to focus on negatives in football.

Moyes has slowly, and with little real money, built a very decent squad and secured our position in the most competitive league around. He's brought in a few players you'd rather not talk about but mostly he's bought exceptionally well at low prices. Occasionally, like this year, the footballs been pretty good. I think overall he deserves a good send off and I cannot understand the fuss because he's taking charge for two more games....if anything I believe the players will do all they can to win both and win well, may not happen but they will I'm sure show how much they respect the guy.

It's got to be right to be worried that the likes of Mark Hughes is strongly rumoured to be the next mgr. I can't bear to think of that as even a remote possibility. Surely Di Matteo would see us as a very worthwhile project ? Surely we can find the £3m compo for Laudrup ? I'm not going to be sorry to see Steve Round go and providing we have got one of those two mgrs or yes even taken a chance on Martinez (and given he can't get his players to defend at all its a big risk) I'd not be horrified to see Neville as a no2 or even Duncan......that role for me is more about man mgt, inspiration and day to day leadership than transfer policy, tactics and buck-stops-here leadership.

Change happens and frankly I think we needed a change. I may be horrified if it means we collapse and go down but even if bugger all else changes at Board or financial level, I don't think we will and I'm not sure that anyone can say things wont actually get better ? We just don't know but this is not a time for crazy grief stricken commentaries, its just a respected, good manager of long standing moving on and the team we support is far, far bigger than David Moyes, something he would I suspect agree with.....

I am thrilled he has gone to United for the following reasons

1 They will never win the league again under him
2 Champions league will never be won
3 more importantly than the above 2, there will be more competition at the top of the league now whiskey nose as gone, as I honestly cannot see united being a threat with mr inept in charge regardless of mr forget people's name being upstairs.

He knows English football has taken a massive nose dive, and he knows it will take years for the likes of his club (former) to be able to challenge clearly superior European football teams to life the champions league trophy, by that time Moyes will have long been sacked.

United fans are already up in arms that they signed Moyes, because they as well as most of us know he is not the man for that job. Why take on a bottler who produced really poor football?

Fans know don't want him, so they will do an hodgson on him and if I supported that awful team I would want him out too.

Moyes signed a 6 year deal. but once the fans start he will be lucky to last 6 months, especially once they end of the champs league, all the cups and the league because he bottles everything hahaha

In the mean time, the only person we must bring in is Laudrup at all costs.

Chris Jones has got it right. There is nothing wrong in Moyes being in-charge for the remainder of the season. All we need to do is win one of these games and ensure that we hang on to 6th place. Not having a send-off game after 11 years at a club is not decent.

To all the Martinez doubters on the thread - we need to remember that Wigan have been financially worse-off than us and that Martinez has never had the chance to buy or keep hold of decent defenders. His passing game is excellent, and with the likes of Distin, Jags, and Coleman, I do not think he would face defensive worries of the scale that he has to endure at Wigan. Being based in England and having married a Scot, he would also be a long-term prospect.
Having said that, if he takes Wigan down he may have a tough time deciding if he should stay and try to bring them back up again.

I think it's fair to say Laudrup is the only sensible choice; he can play on a budget and knows the European market. Laudrup was a quality player... knows his stuff — the complete opposite of Gollum.

On a different note, how in the world can this be?

Martinez 6/4
V Pereira 4/1 – yes please
N Lennon 5/1 – no thanks

P Neville 14/1 – no, never!

As I was a young naive 4-year-old, not really knowing what the world of football meant to me...a man who my dad never heard of was appointed our manager. This man was to become all i've ever known as my 15 years as an Everton fan and 10 seasons as a season ticket holder since i was 5. For me personally, i loved Moyes as a manager he took a seemingly relegation battling club to a consistent top 7/6 and a top 4 challenging team, who regularly take points from the so called 'big 4' albeit not away from home.

Yes his style of football may have been frustrating some seasons, but ultimately he changed the way we played, and over the seasons less and less of the lackluster long ball football that all Evertonians loathed has been played. A man who brought in great players to the club (Baines, Jags, Neville Pienaar etc.) on virtually no budget at all.

A great man, a humble man, a man who has always been at Everton since I've been a season ticket holder. A man who i will miss, and this change will take me time adjust. I can almost guarantee in the 1st few games under the reign of the new manager my dad will almost certainly shout 'Time to make a change Moyes' as he so often has in the seasons gone by.

Who next? the best man for the job in my eyes is Martinez or Laudrup, they remind me of Moyes in a way the way they are a humble but show a great passion for the clubs they are involved in. Both are good tacticians and like to play a passing style of football and have a drive to win! My front runner would be Martinez and i would like to see him bring McManaman with him, as he would be a great addition to the side.

If Laudrup is appointed, Michu would be a dream as well! I also believe the appointment of a new manager would be good for the younger generation as it would get rid of the Moyes favourites such as Osman and Pienaar... who yes are great players, but are ageing and a new manager would hopefully introduce players like Barkley, Duffy and Vellios.

I am going to miss Moyes and i think we will feel his loss. Good luck to the man at United...we just have to look forward and focus on getting the best replacement we can. Thanks for Everything David.

Frida, I never said a 'big send-off'. A normal one will do, and not many can argue against him deserving that.
If you see the poll on ToffeeWeb, you will see Laudrup has got the highest percentage of votes. Well, if he can be be lured away from Swansea now, I can see him being lured away from us by a bigger club a coupl of years down the line. That is why I prefer Martinez.

As Brent says, 'tch'!

You're forgetting something very important. Laudrup has said he always wanted to manage in the Premier League, and wants to stay here. Regardless of whoever, there will always the be the threat of a manager being poached, we've done it ourselves with Walker and I believe we did it with David Moyes. All the best managers are hot property, but it does not mean we shouldn't try to get them. We aren't a poor Championship team here with no hope.

Moyes has gone to make way for a better manager and better times ahead for us, that is what we should believe. If it's Martinez, I will give him my full support and let him try to work his magic with us for a couple of seasons. No-one is bigger than Everton Football Club, managers come and go but supporters don't.

As for Moyes, thanks for stabilizing us and constantly failing to win us any silverware and the dreadful hoofball... but thanks and goodbye and good luck in your new job... haha!

Tsch to those Tsching! lol

Five things I liked about Moyes:
1) His loyalty to Everton.
2) His ability to bring in good players cheap (Baines, Coleman, Distin, Arteta)
3) For building a team that is difficult to beat. ( only 6 games this season).
4) For maintaining the Everton spirit and keeping us free from Suarez, Barton types,
5) For being honest!

Quite a few things I did not like about Moyes!
1) Complete lack of humour and charisma.
2) KITAPO tactics.
3) Taking eight years to find a better right back than
Hibbo.
4) Destroying our winning run by completely changing the team against RS before the semi-final two years ago.
5) Speaking well of Kenwright. (See 1. Likes)
6) Picking players out of form who needed a kick up the arse! (Howard, Osman etc.).
7) Picking Neville instead of Gibson in quarter final against Wigan,
8) For not giving young players chances and confidence!
9) For numerous soul destroying comments ( i.e. like bringing a knife to a gunfight!)
10) For being Boring!

My preferred managers:

1) Laudrup + Highly respected, Winner, works well on a limited budget, teams play attractive and effective football, has wonderfully coiffured hair

2) Clarke + Experienced, works well on a limited budget, teams play good football.

3) Martines + Teams play attractive football, used to being skint, loyal. - Wigan look like being relegated!

4) McKay + Has a solid philosophy to team building. Succeeded fulfiling Cardiff's potential where Dave Jones failed. - No PL experience.

I'm getting used to the possibility that Baines and Fellaini will leave in the summer. On the plus side the new boss will have money to spend building his own team on a very solid base. This is a new chapter in Everton's history and we have to be possitive and support whoever comes in.

I know this suggestion will get shot down in flames, or perhaps ignored completely, but Gary Johnson of Yeovil Town has taken them from the vauxhall conference into division one and is now just one game away from taking them into the championship. A small club with a stadium that holds 8,000. It is impressive in anyone's book. Taking into account that Moyes had only won league two and got to the play off final of league one before coming to Everton and now Man utd. Maybe there are other managers of similar ilk who just need someone to take a chance on them.

Seems like some people want it both ways. The earlier Moyes let's us know when he's leaving the more time we have to get a replacement.
Moyes is a professional who cares about Everton. He will do his best to win these last two games. He wants us to finish higher than Lpool.
I wouldn't mind betting that Everton is the first score he looks for after 'Moyestime' at OT.
Hoping he will still be a friend to Everton and slip us the odd goodun.

Some Everton fans astonish me. Honestly lads FFS.

1. David Moyes has been a fantastic manager for Everton during difficult times but a long way from a successful one and certainly not a 'great'. He is now the manager of Manchester United so why in God's name is he being allowed to manage Everton for the remaining two games. He's made his choiice now please fuck off, we are lowering ourselves almost to give him a testimonial-like send off. If he stays I actually hope he gets booed as he is now a Manchester United manager.

2. IMHO its two years too late, rolling over twice to the RedShite ended my benefit of the doubt with him and the Wigan game this year was equally unforgiveable. He has held this club to ransom whilst knowing for the best part of it what he was going to do....Everton great my arse! Selfish twat more like.

3. Getting a bit sick of the doom-merchants who seem to think that Everton FC are nothing without Moyes. I boldly predict this is the start of a steady decline for Man United whilst, with the right appointment, a decent manager might just come to Everton and show a pair of bollocks in big games.

Everybody focuses on DM. This in my opinion is not the main issue. 10 more years of Moyes and we still could only hope to maintain our current standing. The same applies to any possible successor. And most likely we will find ourselves in survival battles.

Our problems lie with the Impresario. As long as he sticks to his toy and doesn't want to sell, there will be no money; hence no achievements.

When is the last time a club outside the top 4 managed to grab a ticket to the Uefa Champions League? Man City made it with lots of money . Spurs, with a big budget, is struggling to get in. If BK does not sell and we don't get decent money to spend, we'll miss Moyes sooner than we think.

The funny thing is about today is those that have continually been on this site saying how much they wanted David Moyes out are the ones that seem to have their knickers in a twist the most. We can now speak about the MOB with some perspective, some have been reasoned in their arguments (in the end I agreed!) and then of course we had the Tim/ Peter, Ross et al of this world.
Moyes will never get a big job they said ........ Oops!
The money doesn't matter they said........ Please read Joe Beardsmore's post
He's never won at Old Trafford........ I'm guessing August 2013
I know the MOB have really mixed emotions tonight and I really hope you were right all along, in fact, if it was still there, I really would offer to show my arse in Lewis's window if we win something next year.

All we can hope for is a progressive ambitious manager, not the old guard looking for a final payout. Poyet for me.

Vitor Pereira is the one for me. All the others touted would mean compensation payments for the clubs the manager is at. Pereira is out of contract in the summer and is open to a move to the premiership. Laudrup I think would be a god shout but the reported 10-11M payoff to Swansea is too much. If that happened then expect our transfer kitty to look even more piss poor than it may already be.
If Pereira came in we would get a good manager and be saving a few quid on top

chris gould 658. I have personally had the fortune of watching my home town club Newmarket Town under his stewardship and also playing under Gary Johnson at Cambridge Utd youth team, his son was also a few years below who is now manager of Oldham. He did very well with Bristol city a few years ago too.

I remember him being a very good manager who was completely 'hands on' with every aspect of the club, he has also managed the Latvian national team!

It would be a huge gamble though but I would definitely have him over any of the other usual out of work dross we are currently linked with. His CV is more impressive than most of the out of work old boy's club.

The ones I'd prefer to succeed Moyes are Mackay and Poyet. Any one of them. Don't give me Martinez, or Pereira or - the mind boggles - O'Neill or Hughes.

The one -just about - right thing BK has done over his too-long tenure has been the hiring of Moyes, in spite of all his faults. Let him show the same instincts now - although I doubt it.

Above, I've said what I think of Pereira. Do not be fooled just because he's an FC Porto manager. They're not all necessary brilliant...

Alex Ferguson is to become a board member.

Do you really think he'll continue coaching & picking the team?

Everton need to distance themselves from Man Utd now. The Moyes move has obviously been a long term plan since selling Rooney.

It is reasonable to think that BK has asked DM's advice on his successor, just like he apparently asked WS when he sacked him. So, Scot recommends Scot - not a bad idea, Scottish managers have a pretty good record south of the Border - which makes me think that DM, if at all asked, would have recommended either Malky Mackay or - you'd never have guessed it - Dougie Freedman, formerly of Crystal Palace and now at Bolton. You're right of course. Now these guys have to switch from alleging that Moyes is tactically inept to claiming that Man U are incapable of running a football club. How else, for instance, could they even consider employing DM......

The main point for me though is the lack of loyalty shown and their fickleness. As I have said I'm sure the very same group will be the first out of the traps next season calling for the new manager (whoever it is) to be sacked. It goes hand in hand with unrealistic expectations and a refusal to accept reality.

I can't say that I look at any of the potential candidates and really relish the thought of them taking over. Most of them are journeymen who have already been discredited and would (probably) simply put us back in the pack chasing relegation. The one exception, perhaps, for me is Laudrup but I suspect it will be too expensive for us to buy out his contract with Swansea.

And therein lies the problem - we have the same owners, the same precarious financial position so we won't be able to pick and choose who we want.

However, I am an eternal optimist when it comes to Everton - so let's hope we pull someone out of the bag, we grab a bit of cash from somewhere and we gain some momentum from a fresh start....

We'd be too busy laughing at manager Eugene Ruane's bit in the match programme to notice whats happening on the pitch. And of course Kev would obviously be "assistant player-manager"

The sad thing is (not Moyes leaving, that's like a huge weight being lifted) how some of our fans are reacting to this news, for some it's like a family member has died. listening to some of them on the radio nearly blubbering, it's pathetic.

OK, you talked me into it. Although, come to think of it, Brendan, an "assistant player/manager" sounds like someone who assists the players - like a butler or something - and also does a bit of managing when he's got a minute. I think I'd prefer "Player/Assistant Manager" if it's all the same to you. Same low salary, different job title, that's all. Oh, by the way, can I commute from Kent?

Total embarrassment that he'll be at the next 2 games. Thank you David, please just go now. All the media swarming all over us. Ridiculous. Kenwright should ask him not to show up. Have Stubbs take the team for the next 2. While we get on with it and find our own manager. Hopefully by end of July.

We'll be fine, we have a good group of players, use the Baines and Fellaini money to make the additions and strengthen and perhaps now we'll win Sky 5 teams and don't choke when we have our chance..

It's all one big fucking farce and a slap in the mouth, Moyes making a statement to his new fans as the new manager of Man Utd on the Manc's website, but still allowed by shithouse BK to see out our last 2 games.

Also, can't believe some of you lads agreeing that he should be still in charge for those 2 games.

Woke up a few hours ago in Brisbane (on a work trip) to hear the final outcome of this short saga. Got to about 250 on tihs thread than gave up at the number of predictably ungracious and ungrateful comments. Whatever his faults, Moyes has given us great ervice and always acted with dignity in line with club;'s traditions. Giving him a 'good send off' and 'wishing him well' does mean supportinf ManU or supprting Everton any less passionately. If he had walked out instantly the same people would have been accusing Moyes of some other crime. Well, now they can look for the next target. How soon will be it be MOB2 (Martinez out brigage)?

Paul, I'm licking my lips, and really hope the next gaffer's name starts with an 'M' because the ink on my MOB tat is still wet. Enjoy Brisvegas mate, the Valley is the place to go.

I think it's fine that Moyes sees the next two games, but the outcome and/or style of the games will have a massive impact on how he is regarded by fans as of the last game.

Would love to have our manager situation sorted by the Chelsea game so whoever it is has ample time to sort the squad out, send a few of Moyes' Boys packing and bring in a couple of fresh faces.

Some of the comments on here are sad. 10 years with Moyes reads:

2002-03 7th
2003-04 17th
2004-05 4th - YAY!
2005-06 11th
2006-07 6th
2007-08 5th
2008-09 5th
2009-10 8th
2010-11 7th
2011-12 7th
2012-13 6th

10 years before him looks like this:

2000-01 16th
1999-00 13th
1998-99 14th
1997-98 17th
1996-97 15th
1995-96 6th
1994-95 15th & FA Cup -Yay!
1993-92 17th
1992-93 13th
1991-92 12th

Speaks for itself! No time to be bitter about him going. There's not a manager alive who wouldn't like to try a go at Man Utd. You can't blame him and we should all cheer him off on Sunday. He deserves that much.

Served out his contract, which obviously still means something to some people with dignity and loyalty. He's done all he can do at Everton with fuck all cash. Obviously wasn't gonna get any more for next season so fair play, I reckons. All you moaning cunts on here that wanted him to go, I hope you're happy coz we'll be finishing seasons more like the second lot without him. David William Moyes – Legend!!!

Phil, do you really believe Moyes left with "dignity and loyalty"?

Sorry mate you must have seen something a lot of us missed! He's been harping on for years about the "correct way to do things". He decided to say nothing until the end of the season, and regardless, in my opinion that DID affect the players.

The last few weeks he's been going on about things that affect us next season and all the time he knew full well he wouldn't be re-signing. Then, with 2 games to go, he announces his new job!! He's as bad as the players he's slagged over the years.

He's gone and we move on, but "dignity and loyalty" — no chance!!!

Some very bitter Blues on here today. I've slagged off Moyes as much as anyone this year - but I can't see what he's done wrong.

It wasn't his decision to announce this now. He would have seen out his contract and then announced it. We don't have to fawn over the man, but it would be nice for him to have a couple of games for us to say thanks - and for him to say thanks to us.

I do feel some slight angst that he's been allowed to run down his contract - but he is well within his rights to do that.

Good luck from me, Moyes. Not a chance in hell he'd have got that job if he was born south of the border though.

Moyes contract runs out at Everton on 30th June, which means, after the Chelsea game, Everton Football Club will be paying 6 weeks pay at £65,000 — that's £390,000 we will be paying to the manager of Man Utd for what???

Michael Kenrick
495 Posted 10/05/2013 at 07:13:13
Can we have less of this nonsense (eg, Tony Hanlon). He's contractually obligated to do a job at Everton and Everton are contractually obligated to pay him his salary. He's still the Everton manager — not the Man Utd manager.

And Peter Thistle:

“Everton’s fantastic fans have played a big part in making my years at Goodison so enjoyable and I thank them wholeheartedly for the support they have given me and the players."

Which part of that are you having trouble with?

Alan McGuffog
496 Posted 10/05/2013 at 07:17:27
Indeed Michael. Rules and customs of employment practice apply whether or not you work in the la la world of football salaries. A contract is a contract....I assume he will be on the payroll at OT from 1st July. Until then he is on the payroll at EFC.

What an ill formed comment. I await your apology.

Those final weeks are essentially Moyes' holiday pay. Your gripe is with football's financial structure rather than Moyes personally.

Very worried that BK will be 'taking his time' to appoint a replacement. Out of anyone else's mouth I'd take that as a good thing. Proven liar Kenwright actually means, 'I can sell a few key players without dealing with a manger and I can also save a few quid on wages.'

When he put pen to paper on his contract, BK should have put Moyes on gardening leave.

Also, in all this, where has the honesty and integrity gone that we are always hearing from lads on here in regards to Moyes? I just can't believe that some of you are that naïve to think that in the space of 24hrs, Fergie decided to retire and Moyes is installed as manager. This has been in the pipeline for months.

By the way, it's nothing to do with being bitter, it's about us looking a fucking joke and dancing to the tune of the Mancs and Moyes.

I agree with Brian waring, this isn't an overnight deal, Moyes has probably known about this for a while. Bk should've told him to pack his bags and go now. What will the players think of him now? They probably aren't too bothered about the remaining games now.

This has been coming for ages.
If anyone thinks Moyes only found about about Utds interest the day after Ferguson told his players then sorry but you're in cloud cookoo land.
I personally was not that bothered whether Moyes stayed or left. Everton Football Club go on.
Anyway my issue has always been with the Board and not the Manager.
Saying that I think the end of the Moyes era has been pathetically handled by all concerned.
When Moyes sat down with Fergie et al, whenever it was - certainly NOT Wednesday ! He could have well insisted that no announcement using his name be made until the end of the season.
As far as I'm concerned his integrity and honesty is shot !
We've nowt to play for now as once he announced his new position he should have gone.

Now we hear that there is no rush to appoint a new manager. What about preparing for the new season, transfers etc?
This should be a really exciting time, we have got rid of a negative defensive minded manager and we have the opportunity to appoint a new man with a vision for the club.
I am worried. We do not want a British manager, they are clueless tactically. We have just had one who had no idea about tactics( apart from defending).

I believe its called success(ion) management, and clearly Fergie and DM have been looking at this long term, a six year contract doesn't get awarded over 2 days, the interview has been 2 years or more !

I think DM has been excellent for Everton, but I am shocked at how taken aback the board esp Bill K seem to be.

Your most senior employee is letting his contract run down and you haven't asked quietly "ok David are you going to Utd? You are, ok who do you rate as a replacement ? Is Phil Neville ready or not yet, hmm, Martinez etc ?"

"Ok we'll keep it under wraps for now and quietly work in the background to review your successor".

Instead we have a startled bunny in the TV headlights

Think about where we were before Davey came on board and how consistently we have been near the top of the league.

The guy has been a success, no question and we should applaud him for that.

Absolutely right. I can't believe he's come out and said he was clueless. The guy was out of contract, surely you've got to plan for his departure - even if you think it's unlikely. And even if you were completely clueless, wouldn't you at least feign that you had an inkling and that the wheels were in motion to find a successor. No - Kenwright stands in front of the national media and freely admits his idiocy.

This is all getting very hard isn't it and so so typical Everton, but the current fans meltdown is perfectly reasonable, not difficult to understand but notwithstanding my missive at #502 there's some worrying stuff emerging and the CEO needs to step in and try to calm things down.......a bit.

It may well be a sort of holiday pay thing, it may well be a reflection of footballs financial structures, but those shouting about this strange six weeks as mgr of Everton AND Man Utd surely have a point ? He's not getting paid by Utd, it appears, yet from 20th May it is more than unreal to not assume that's all he's thinking about, planning for and practically interested in ? In fact it's actually blatently wrong. It's a terrible insult to us and has to be resolved quickly.

Think about this, DM is we are repeatedly told a totally sad, intense, research guy, and we are asked to believe that, two weeks or so holiday aside, he's going to NOT be talking to Utd Chairman et al about whose staying, whose to be sold and who is on the list of money almost no object purchases ? Moyes is simply not a mgr who can sit back and "lose" six vital weeks of close season squad planning and transfer action. In the meantime he surely CANNOT be having ANY meaningful discussion with Everton players about their future, cannot be planning and auctioning vital player moves in and out, so Utd will get his attention, his preparation, whilst EFC will in practical terms get nothing, lose six key weeks and pay around 400k for the privilege ? It's not hysteria to question how that can be right whatever the contractual T&Cs is it ?

As for the new mgr.....we of course will not really be consulted and frankly that's not all bad as to read some of the stuff from the last 24hrs Bill will be getting strong recommendations for Mark Hughes who has a truly appalling record and attitude yet apparently is a great mgr cos he's "hard as nails". God help us. Bill will it seems also be getting equally strong recommendations for folk who cannot lay any reasonable claim to even a basic top level track record and whilst many of the names seem a decent bet for the No2 slot, how can anyone really think these untried (mostly) ex players are ready now to take us fwd and which top notch players in Europe will be attracted to a club led by a Stubbsy or a Big Dunc or a Davy Weir ????

There are some things getting a little clearer. Swansea, having cleverly shifted Brenda for £5m are now thinking they can double that for Laudrup. We won't pay £3m let alone £10 in compo. Few seem to think that Di Matteo is a "Bill choice" or that he will come.....at least that's what the betting money says......which saddens me a lot. There remains a very strong view in the media that Martinez has to distance himself from our job, just for ten days, then whatever the outcome of his regular relegation battle he's one of the two top contenders.....the other being Lennon, which leaves me strangely cold. Why ? Well I guess because I don't see managing Celtic in a one club league is any different to managing a Championship or even League one side....it's more media yes, but hardly a stretch ? I can see he's done better in the CL this year, so that's a plus. But Lennon comes with what some refer to as baggage, he makes Moyes look an angel in terms of aggro with the authorities and the religious intensity worries me, not because I give a fig about his beliefs, they are his to hold, but the publicity that surrounds them is perhaps a huge distraction ? I suspect he's more wronged than sinner in all this and I'm not sure it's an issue at all, but it feels "out there".....am I wrong in this ? Truth is I'd rather gamble that Martinez is better than his Wigan record suggests and his flair and excellent player mgt, and I think good rep in Europe, is enough to make him the guy we need.

We need a quick appointment. We deserve the best we can afford and can get. We should be offering Baines an immediate rise and massive contract extension to make him our best paid player, he's worth 90k per week or even 100k and that's what he would get with Moyes at Utd. I'd like to think Jags will stay and am not as horrified as I thought I would be about Felli leaving. But for me losing Baines is not acceptable at any price.

Ok he's gone. He's gone to the biggest and best club in England and one of the European giants. A few words of advice for him though are: if we as Evertonians couldn't put up with 4-5-1 at home against the likes of Stoke, Wigan etc then Utd fans will likely riot if they expect to win the league.

You can't blame anyone for going to that job and trying it out but I hope to God above that we get someone who will adapt and change styles to suit the game we play. Martin O'Neill, Neil Lennon, Rafa, Mark Hughes, Redknapp or Duncan Ferguson aren't a good fit so please BK don't entertain it and choose someone who can get us playing to win, not us playing to not lose

Tim, Moyes accepted an offer of a job at the biggest club in world football. He was neither deceitful nor disrespectful. He was very close to the end of his contract and hasn't walked away, neither did he walk away like Royle did when he was told that there was no money for players. I believe that the Fer transfer may well have been the final straw and Moyes, like all of us, had had enough of Boys Pen Billy and his lies and accepted United's offer. I don't blame him. I believe he was, however, pissed off with Kenwright and his lies and if Moyes ever writes a "tell all" book we will no doubt appreciate what deceit and disrespect truly are.
My opinion. I'm entitled to it.

I think this has been wrapped up for at least a few months so I can't stand the way Moyes is coming out of this whiter than white in some peoples eyes. The man has moved the goal posts a few times this past year over his contract.

He sat on tele next to BK, both giving the impression it wasn't a big deal and could be sorted in 5 mins ( then why not if thats how easy it was ). Then Moyes said he would make a decision in January. January came and went, all of a sudden it became about how the team finishes the season and he would make a decision based on that.

Somewhere in that timeline he was approached by Utd and accepted the job and it defo wasn't in the last couple of days. So he has been stringing the club along, saying one thing while having different intentions. The only question is how long has the deceit been going on for?

You can't blame Moyes for being happy in any photos at landing that job. It is one of the prime jobs in football worldwide - who wouldn't be smiling ??

He has given us 11 good years and every year has been the same when it comes to money. It's the same as working for a company every year that just about makes a profit but never makes enough to compete and grow. After 11 years he owes us nothing and nobody can complain about this.

I imagine that he had known about it months ago and was told not to commit to anything at Everton in the meantime. That's fair enough and I don't see a problem at all.

I just hope Kenwright has asked Moyes who HE thinks should be the next manager - I reckon he would have an idea. I just hope it isn't O'Neill/Hughes or Lennon - oh dear.

As I've said before, Sir Alex Ferguson would not have left football management empty handed. I do not expect he decided to retire before the title was secured, or at least pretty obvious. His hip operation was recently decided, not penned in months ago. Moyes made statements about going to manage in German football, which I believe signified a come and get me plea, and I do genuinely believe that a January warchest would have caused him to sign a new contract. But he was not backed as usual. And I find it hard to believe that so many on here are angry because a manager has decided to move clubs at the end of his contract, after giving no guarantees over his future. I firmly believe he knew for weeks at the most, and not months. A decision on Moyes, and an approach would not have been instantaneously either.

There is alot of conspiracy theorising... a desire, it seems, to demonise the manager who has put us back onto the map. We have been good for Moyes, and he has been good for us. I am sad to see him go. Why can't we just say goodbye amicably, without suggesting he has been in cohorts with another team? There is projecting going on... probably from anger. But he is gone now. The manager who would never get a top offer has got the biggest of all, and we will get a chance, which many of the critics have desired, to try a different direction. And BK, for all his faults, does not need a manager in place now. We will likely get someone when the season is over and done with, when we know whether Wigan are still in this league or not (because from the appearance of things, it seems he is our number 1 target). We will not lose out by waiting a few days.

And Moyes is still our manager till July, not United's. He has been with us for eleven years, and is not going to cease caring because he is leaving.

You don't get a 6 year deal at Man Utd overnight, especially without a trophy on your CV. This has been in the pipeline for a while (I have no evidence obviously) so maybe his replacement has also been agreed???

I think BK knew he was leaving but was powerless to stop it.

Great finishing stats Phil. I think it shows the progress which some of here have resisted. And all of that with a net spend of less than a million a year?

That's why the pro-Moyes crowd have always been so confident in his ability. And why many of us fear the next 10 years.

Paul David @ 191

Paul, neither you nor I know how long it has been since Moyes decided enough is enough, and accepted an offer from Utd. I agree with Jim Knightley in his excellent 240 post, it may be weeks but not months and that if Bungalow Bill had backed him in January he may well have signed his contract. I cannot believe Kenwright is as shocked as he is trying to make out, after all, the subject of Moyes = Utd has been in every gossip column for a year or so, so don't fall for his acting, please. I'm not blind to Moyes faults, either, and his substitutions at 80mins had me tearing what's left of my hair out as did , on occasions, his team selection and failure to play some of the younger lads but he has left this club light years better than when he took over, the fact that we are disappointed with 6th place is proof of that, and for that fact alone he deserves our gratitude and respect. I believe he is an honourable man who has fought our corner since he arrived and, apart from "knife to a gunfight" and a semi-final debacle, he has been a top ambassador for Everton Fc. Again, my opinion.

For me the lads done well and I wish all the best at MU - as for clubs future may we be just as lucky and find some one big enough to fill Mr Moyes shoes.

I don't blame Moyes for going to Man U, its a fantastic opportunity for him. It will also be interesting to see how he deals with world class players and if he can manage the expectation that trophies must be won each year and if mentally he can handle the 'big' games. His consistent (never won a cup in 11 years ) failure in the latter at Everton was a major issue with many correspondents on this web site, myself included. However, his record in the league , I feel was excellent and generally we have finished top or near the top of our 'division' in the league. Reality check is that we are not a top 5 club due to resources, stadium, ownership etc so lets live with it until if/when there are changes.

I do have a nagging feeling that he has sold us down the river in the way it has happened however. Deals like this don't happen overnight. Did he know about this (Fergies mate etc) months ago and therefore refuse to sign a contract under the pretence of waiting to see what money was available and if players were going to be retained ? We all know funds will be limited in the summer so he must have known this too as January was a large hint.

Therefore he doesnt sign the contract as he knows Utd would not have to pay compensation to buy him out thus weakening us financially, furthermore he can then poach players at a cheaper price knowing we need the money over the summer.

Perhaps this is worth thinking about during the theatricals on Sunday when our ex manager will be the centre of attention rather than the players.

I do feel that he should have been put on gardening leave once he made his decision and a caretaker eg Stubbs,Sheedy be put in charge for the last couple of games.

Mr Moyes's celebration should be his introduction to the Utd fans at the first game of the season, not his last game at Goodison

Tim#172, what will you find to write about when we have a new manager? Or are you going to continually spout bullshit about Moyes for the whole of next season and beyond?

I know that Moyes has a deep bank of decency and dignity but he is a losing hefty chunks of it from one day to the next at the moment.

I was planning for next season with EFC and planning to stay. Who do you think we are Moyes? That is prime bull. Do you honestly expect us to believe that you were not talking to Man-U about this move this calendar year?

And now you want to stick your nose into our future - I'll give Bill ('a good man') all the help he wants to get the right central defender I mean man for the job. Keep the fuck away, though I suppose there's no hope of that is there.

Just want to get this off my chest and I'll be off! I doesn't matter how many trophies Moyes wins at ManU. He'll never shake off the fact that for 11 long years, he won absolutely NOTHING! ELEVEN LONG YEEEEEARS! NOTHING!!! By going to ManU he's told the world he's a quitter coz to win any kind of trophy, he's going to need SAF hand up his backside! Glad he's gone and I've been calling for BK to shake him off for a while now! At ManU he will always be number 2!

For a man running a premier league club is there anyone as clueless as kenwright.

No idea he was leaving ha ha ha ha ha

He cant smell the shit in his own garden.

He should have said to Moyes sign or go. Does anyone believe for one minute Moyes wasn't informed/tipped off by Sir Alex months ago?

I'm sure Moyes knew before Xmas.

Brent (493) - Without arguing your sentiment, if you were "sick and tired at the smug .. . .", you would have stopped responding to it, no?

The simple cure for sickness and tiredness on a discussion board is just don't respond to what's causing your sickness and tiredness.

See the name, feel sick and tired? Skip to the next name, refreshed. If only the world of medicine was as simple.

As much as I hate to say it on a great site like TW, there are a couple fellows I read, think, "What the fuck are you doing in here?", shake my head or laugh at them, and just move to the next post.

Just ignore them and focus on the intelligent conversation. After all, we both, and the bulk of us, come in here because most of the discussion is intelligent. Why waste time on the tiny percentage that displays no intelligence at all?

Now, saying this, I appreciate mine is one of the names people see and can't wait to read what I have to say.

On Moyes to United. The first inkling was the bookies getting a flood of cash on Moyes-in to United a few days ago. The bookies were caught out for a moment? OK. That happens. But that they were caught out for months? The bookies?

Never been to Liverpool. But New York City is basically Liverpool in America and I grew up surrounded by the gambling crowd. C'mon already.

That the Glazers knew Fergy was going once the league trophy was secured, I'll accept. The guy was hardly retiring before he brought the league trophy to ManU's side of town.

Since then, I can accept everything happened real fast; particularly given Fergy's over-the-years, repeated, complimetary remarks on what Moyes has managed to do at Everton with ManU pocket change.

The big take-away with all this is the Bill could always say, "I'm not naked. The clothes are invisible". It was true as long as Moyes was the invisable cloak.

Now Bill's naked. Which means the Club is. Won't be a problem the next year or 2. The fellows we retain are not a relegation team.

After that?

I find it odd that a manager's contract finishes on June 30. I'm not having a crack at anyone - Moyes, BK, etc - here as I'm sure most contracts, be they manager or player, end June 30. It just seems more logical that they should end "at the conclusion of the working week of the final game."

That said, I'm a massive fan of your next season starting the day after your current season ends - anyone in the Brisbane area remember Brothers Rugby training the day after losing the 2008 grand final? - and that we need a manager urgently.

It is quite clear that Moyes agreed to go to Utd several months ago.

1. It seems to be accepted by the media that Ferguson was going to retire last season but for Aguero's last dash goal. Presumably Moyes was targeted then.

2. Moyes has allowed his contract to run down.

3. The deal was done and dusted within hours of Moyes meeting Kenwright which would indicate that it had been prior agreed.

4. Most importantly and I'm not sure how widespread this knowledge is but an Everton website (Everton Arent We) was told by a source on 3rd March that at the end of the season Ferguson was going upstairs and that he was being replaced by Moyes. That website released the information that day on twitter. Therefore, the comments from Moyes that this all occurred this week is rather questionable.

That same source has apparantly said that Everton have a shortlist of 3 for Moyes replacement: Roberto Martinez, Neil Lennon and surprisingly Steve Bruce.

Still some people are moaning. Do us a favour and stop reinforcing the stereotype... Paul. In answer to the other question, yes, think he did. He's seeing out his contract, just like players do these days. Could have left before, I'm sure. I think Moyes only would have left us for 2 or 3 teams. No animosity should be directed his way. It's the people above him we should be bemoaning. We're all entitled to our own views though.

Go Teary Billy, go, wrap this one up:

Juventus coach Antonio Conte says he could be tempted by a move to the Premier League after steering the Turin side to back-to-back Serie A titles.

"It's not a secret the fact that I would like to work abroad" Conte told the BBC's World Football programme.

"I hope, in the future, to be a coach in the Premier League," the 43-year-old added in English, after conducting the rest of the interview in Italian.

Conte has previously said he wants to discuss his future with Juve officials.

Crap seeing his contract out - 928 If the two of them had had a drop of realism and mutual dignity they would have called it a day on Wednesday. There is zero point in having Moyes hanging around for the next 2 games. We will finish 6th. We will finish above Lpool. We will not catch up with Spurs. Do you honestly feel that having Moyes around in these circumstances is good for the club and players? But rest assured that Man-Utd's next gaffer will be having a word int the ear of certain of our players

We have enough problems Paul without getting mixed up with the Italian mafia we can't seem to deal wit the Manchester one. However I do not want another British Manager, If we want a fresh start it is important to get someone fresh.preferably someone who does not worship at the altar of SAF and company.

Expected DM to leave this summer and as I don't think we are necessarily fated to fall apart without him I wasn't too bothered anyway.

I am actually pleased that he has gone to United as it means that within a year we will have a pretty good idea of whether he was the 'Moyesiah' or just 'Dithering Davey', and whether his 'achievements' will be exceeded, equalled, or beyond his successor.

I think DM will approach the next two games in the same way he would have approached them if he wasn't departing immediately after them, and I see no reason why our best players will automatically follow him down the East Lancs.

The key factors will be who we are able to appoint as our next manager and how much financial backing we can give them to make their mark on the squad. My biggest worry is that the main quality BK will be looking for is unswerving loyalty to himself in return for a generous pay packet.

In response to a much earlier post, I voted for Steve Clarke in the poll as he seems to be a good coach / manager and would hopefully be far less expensive to release from his current contract than Laudrup.

I don't give two hoots for his previous unfortunate affiliation (which I presume is his major failing) if he could do a good job for us.

Ian #970 As you report this my mind is racing, 'a source on 3rd March that at the end of the season Ferguson was going upstairs and that he was being replaced by Moyes'

This happens to be the Sunday before the Wigan game on Saturday 9th March, and so it may have unsettled the players and resulted in that abject performance in that FA Cup tie. Funny how the week after they gave an outstanding display against the only team that could realistically challenge United for the title, probably all just coincidental.

I am not sure BK has anything to do with Moyes leaving, I would even go as far as saying BK probably offered him the world withing reason. But Moyes I feel maybe a little too ambitious. I really think that this may in my opinion been setup at the end of last season. Moyes offered a 1 year contract extention. Lets not be Naive about this these guys are probably in regular contact with each other, I don't think it would be wildly known, we maybe talking gentlemens agreements. Maybe I am looking into this too deep but the body language at old trafford seems to show something different in Moyes, that was Feb 10th .

A change for the better will come only with a big budget, and this will come only when BK loosens his grip of the club and sells. Until this day comes, we won't be able to see better achievements than during the Moyes era.

So stop moaning – BK should be the target, not Moyes.
