What the fans want to see in the team for the rest of the season

As a positive Everton fan, I'd like to see a lot of experimentation in the last few games – however as the manager is hoping to keep his job, I fear we might see the same old system.

Funnily enough, I think Roberto would earn a lot more respect if he had to balls to risk it with changes.

4-2-3-1 has been our formation for most of the season - I personally like the formation. However, it is only effective if the striker gets enough support up top (and puts in the effort). Further more, the formation needs one of the holding midfielders to be able to get up the pitch and create chances – Dembele for Spurs is a perfect example of that. For too long now, we have had two defensive midfielders who can't add much to the attack – Barry can pick a pass, but can't dribble and lacks the speed needed.

I really really would like to see a higher press on defense, like we did in the second half of the FA Cup semi-final! Along with improved counter attacking and quick release up field. I hope we use the rest of the season as a pre-preseason!

The players I'd like to see experimented with in the remaining games are:

Youngsters:

Pennington – I think he has earned his place in the next few games! Looked a little nervous at the beginning, but grew into the game.

Dowell – Obviously there is a lot of hype around this guy, with his performances in the u21's. Hopefully he gets a chance to slowly be introduced - giving him at least 30 minutes off the bench to begin with, and see how he goes. He looks calm on the ball - reminds me of Barkley of old.

Galloway – He is back fit after injury and I feel he has been a little unlucky not to make the team after his performance at the beginning of the season! He deserves a chance – hopefully tried at LCB, and not only at left-back.

Connolly – Handled himself well in his brief spell, before being replaced by Besic (which I don't disagree with completely). Deserves some decent time in the last few.

Davies – Hopefully will add that little more go forward in the midfield! Worth a try, even though Gibson has done a decent job since his return.

Henen – This man has pace, let him have a run in the last few down the left or through the middle. It would definitely help him adapt to the next level as well.

Holgate – Plays at RCB and sometimes at RB, nice and versatile. It would also do him good to learn and experience the next step up.

Current first team players:

Stones – He has been a lot better lately, and his confidence in his own ability is very important! As I have preached before, he should be tested out at CDM, with all his abilities. With Funes Mori back from suspension, I'd move Stones forward, into a CDM to screen in front of the back four.

Barkley – He has lost a lot of confidence lately and has put in some poor performances! I think this is mainly due to him playing far too deep, and having to turn towards his own goal while in possession. He is (was) one of the best with ball at feet, moving forward. Hopefully he will be played just behind the striker, or even given a chance to play up front. Alternatively, I think he might benefit from playing down the left flank.

Niasse – Give the man a chance, it will also help with his fitness and help him learn for next season. I think he has all the will need, he is a team player, and hopefully might inspire others to play for the team and the players next to them.

Cleverley – I don't like him playing down the left at all! He does a decent job, but inevitably Baines ends up at left wing and this makes us a more susceptible on the counter. I'd like to see him in the CM position.

Besic – I like his attitude a lot! He works hard and is a no-nonsense type of player – sometimes a little silly in his challenges though. He has never really been given a decent run of games in a row, hopefully he can in the last three.

Yes – I'm at risk of playing Football Manager, but the truth remains that a bit of experimentation and use of the youngsters would be exciting and add something different. They can't do much worse than the others in the last half of the season, and it should be well worth it in the last few games. If anything, it shows there is plenty room for improvement next season.

I think all of those teams will get torn apart. I guess if we have nothing to play for, then so what? Can you imagine the stick RM will get though? Plus, if he's picking the team and trying to save his job, this all seems unlikely....

I can't see Mirallas getting a look in. Why would he suddenly come into favour? The players have been a huge let down, typified by our £50M+ striker blowing off his mouth about how ready he is for Champions League football... then not scoring a single goal since!

I'm not sure what it will do in playing the youngsters now either sorry. I like the idea of Stones playing in front of the CBs. I think a lot of our problems come from either Barry or Gibson coming deep to get the ball or else slotting in to cover full backs. It just leaves McCarthy isolated and he struggles to have an influence. I'd like to see Stones and Besic together in the middle but doubt I ever will.

I also think there is nothing at all wrong with the system we play or the tactics.. its more the application. Actually its more his management of the squad. When Martinez first came and changed the way we played it may of seemed a novelty... however, even England are playing this system now. No excuses remain.

If Martinez is going to stay (and I doubt he will) we will need to sign a couple of leaders on the pitch.... and also get rid of some of the Wigan backroom staff FFS. I have no hair left.

Might as well play some youngsters. The experience will do them good and there's literally nothing to play for. You couldn't even say there's pride at stake - that was lost at Anfield. Even trying out new things teaches you nothing - performing under literally no pressure is very different to what we'll need next season.

On the other hand, making the senior players play out the season might be more fitting than giving them an early finish.

In truth, I don't really care what we do.

Yep, it's hard to care what we do at the moment, Ernie!

In truth, the atmosphere at Goodison has been toxic for nearly 2 years – there can't be any way back for Martinez unfortunately. We need to be lifted first before we can move forward.

Sorry guys but the words "nothing to play for" have absolutely no place whatsoever in the context of a team representing Everton Football Club taking the field in a competitive match, in my opinion. To me that is just a further manifestation of the apathy permeating the ground which has seen match going fans attacked here for the lack of atmosphere. It needs to be stamped out as it is an indicator of pride in the Club. This is what Martinez removing passion from the Club looks like.

Besides which, with £1.6m per place on offer this season, "nothing to play for" is complete bollocks anyway.

Would like to see us win our last three games.

Would like to see as many young lads get a chance as possible.

Would like protests to continue (although I don't think Besic shouldn't be getting involved - Link )

"Yes – I'm at risk of playing Football Manager"

When you've gone so far as to pre-plan which players you're going to take off and bring on as sub three games in advance, even narrowing it down to the exact minute you'll make said changes, then I think it's safe to say you wandered right past the big warning sign with RISKY written on it some time ago.

Still, credit where it's due. Any manager who preaches about giving young players their chance, playing a fast paced, pressing game complete with lightning quick counter-attacks and ending the season on a fresh and exciting note, only to then name an 'experimental' line-up that sees the creaking Tales From The Crypt triumvirate of Howard, Hibbert, and Osman all getting a start, has got to have goddamn (virtual) balls of steel.

Whilst there is still an outside chance of a top-half finish which RM would no doubt use to signal progress, due primarily to the 2 domestic semis, there is no way on this earth he will play the kids for anything more than cameos.

Not unless he's assured of keeping his job regardless or results; which I suspect he won't be.

Hard to get too excited about the next three games. Martinez should not be allowed to waffle his usual nonsense about how wonderful everything is..should we actually win these games. Bar his after match ramblings.

The Champions just might be suffering a hangover. That usually happens. But no positive spin should we get a result against them it means nout.

Think that we should play a few youngsters but also go strong. (is that Laughter in the back ground)...Everton going strong.

Play Lukaku he should be well rested.since he downed tools weeks ago..play Barkley. Play Stones.Baines and even Mirallas. Wheel out Pienaar, Hibbert and Osman. Tell Sharp to bring his boots anything is possible with Martinez bloody anything.

Considering that we are playing a couple of teams that are fighting relegation are we not obliged to put out our strongest team.. On second thoughtsfield our first eleven..give Sunderland and Norwich a fighting chance give Sunderland and Norwich three points each maybe get Newcastle relegated. And Martinez sacked...

Forgive the rant. I don't care anymore..well not until the start of next season when hope springs eternal.again. Wonder if I can get 50001 about Leicester winning the league next season maybe 20,0001 about Everton. Up the Toffees.

Don't really care what happens in these dead rubbers to be honest, hopefully a little pride and organisation is on show but I doubt it. It would impress me most if we kept clean sheets in every match but what are the odds of that, about 5000-1 I reckon.

We are in limbo until the inevitable Martinez sacking. I really don't see what the point is in letting him continue it would have given the whole place a lift even with someone as caretaker until the end of the season.

I agree with giving some of the younger players game time. Dowell certainly needs to be given a chance, he has earned it. Galloway should be given a go at CB... (in case Stones does go!) Davies also.

Of the first team squad, I would definitely keep playing Niasse, we have to see what he's capable of – if anything.

I would like to see Pennington keep his place. Game time given to dowell, and Davies. Also I really want us to win our last three games. I never want us to lose ever, but I also don't want Martinez to keep his job. Should have been axed halfway through last season.

Everton have a duty to win all games, especially at the end of the season when we are playing Sunderland, the screams from the other relegation contenders and the bookmakers will be immense.

Experiment and blood one or two youngsters but not wholesale changes, it's bad enough knowing Howard is in goal.

Phil Walling
19 Posted 04/05/2016 at 16:33:44
Can't see any of those ideas being risked. What is paramount for Martinez is keeping his job via some good results. What's most important to the bean counters who employ him is the 'league table' money that works out at £1.234 M per place.

Thus, if we can finish on 9th (unlikely) we collect £12.34M whilst down at 14th only £7.40M. The irony of that is that the higher Everton finish, the more affordable would be the manager's pay-off.

Revised forecast from me, 49points for 10th place!

I would like to see a lot of professionalism on display and the team playing as a, well... as a team, and not a bunch of individuals.

I would also like to see Roberto placed in stocks at full time in the centre circle. Loads of rotten fruit available to any who feels the need to vent their frustration. Of course those who think that is not the Everton way would be free to make their way home untroubled.

Garry Corgan
21 Posted 04/05/2016 at 17:23:53
I always, ALWAYS want Everton to win but I can't remember entering a spell of three games where I'm so apathetic as to the result.

To my mind, I hope we're just treading water now until the fateful announcement of Roberto's departure and replacement with a top-class, household name appointment in his place and a war-chest handed to him by Mr Moshiri. Whatever happens in the meantime is neither here nor there.

Agree with your sentiments but, Galloway has been in really poor form, Besic doesn't seem to be making the grade and Niasse can't pass the ball and is probably a complete write off who may be gone in the summer.

No such thing as a dead match/dead rubber or nothing to play for/meaningless fixture. Winners try and win every time they compete at anything. We should have a club where everyone associated with it are pissed off if we lose the toss, lose a throw in, lose a corner never mind lose a game.

Watching Simeone yesterday and he hit one of his own staff when he didn't get the sub board up quick enough-winning attitude. I do draw the line at throwing blows at your employees but I wish we had someone with even a bit of his fire.

Gareth, fair play to you for still having the enthusiasm to entertain such ideas.
I'm drifting off into the close season....I would like to see Dowel given a proper outing. I would also like us to play 4-4-2 , or at least switch to it from time to time, but after hearing Roberto's views on Leicester, I doubt we'll see it.
Robin Cannon
25 Posted 04/05/2016 at 17:48:41
I'd like to see some of the better youngsters given an opportunity. Beyond that, I'm almost past caring. Last week watching the Bournemouth game I was so distracted that at the final whistle I had to check back in "oh, did we win?".

While wanting Everton to win every individual game, I also want Everton to achieve long term and lasting success. Right now, those two things are actually incompatible.

Three wins between now and the end of the season, in games that don't particularly matter, does nothing but increase the chances of Roberto Martinez staying on as manager; and thus reduces our chances of long term success.

"Watching Simeone yesterday and he hit one of his own staff when he didn't get the sub board up quick enough - winning attitude. I do draw the line at throwing blows at your employees but I wish we had someone with even a bit of his fire."

I thought the same thing when I saw that. Indeed, watching him over the two legs against Bayern, he was often more entertaining than the football on show!

If and when he ever makes the move to the English PL, I wonder how many touchline bans he would get!

I haven't (and won't) enter the fantasy football world of picking our next manager, but I'm of the opinion that a manager of Simone's ilk is exactly what the club, and this current team in particular, is desperately in need of. Goodison would be rocking with a manager like him.

There would be no hiding place for passengers. The team would be defensively solid. Tactics spot on. Players fit, for both the game and the entire season. Any one who didn't leave everything they had to offer out on the pitch at the final whistle would not be long at the club. 'Chemistry' would not be a problem. Supporters and players alike would be left in no doubt as to the passion and commitment of the manager.

The stuff of dreams...

I'm simply astounded that the Board has felt able to stick a finger in its collective ear and make no pronouncement whatsoever following this car crash of a season, culminating in two such abysmal results ALMOST TWO WEEKS AGO.

Not only have our custodians ignored the calls for Martinez to go on here (expected), but they have clearly felt it acceptable to bury their heads in the sand despite the banners and the numerous Echo articles virtually imploring them to back or sack him.

Perhaps they figured they could ride out the storm of the Bournemouth game (which it seems they ordered the tannoy operator to help them with!) on the basis our next two fixtures are away and that the party atmosphere, laps of honour etc on the final day of the season might come to their rescue v Norwich. And maybe, sadly, they were right. The media attention not only this weekend but until the end of the season will all be on Leicester and the relegation battle. Even if there are banners on Saturday, the press will pay no heed amidst the Foxes' title party.

Apart from a small minority who may own a handful of shares, the fans may not be shareholders in Everton in the literal sense, but we are certainly stakeholders. It is nothing short of a disgrace that the Board of directors has said absolutely nothing to assuage the concerns of these stakeholders. If they intend to back Martinez, that's their (sadly misguided) prerogative. If they intend him to leave, even via a dignified mutual consent parting after the Norwich game, likewise. But in either case, why the hell not say so now? Agreements for managers to go after the end of a current season are now commonplace after all. It hasn't exactly interrupted City's progress knowing Pellegrini is off for months has it?!

An announcement shortly after the semi final would have been the right, well judged thing to do. Words cannot describe my anger at the dereliction of duty by the board in choosing to stay quiet.

Mark,

I don't know why you would be surprised. A see no evil, hear no evil stance is par for the course for the people in charge of Everton and has been for more years than I care to remember.

When have they ever been eager to engage with the fans during times of discontent or directly address any of their concerns? The only time they're prepared to stick their head out of their sound/scally proofed bunker is when things are going well and they can't wait to bask in a bit of reflected glory and receive a few pats on the back for getting something right.

When things go to shit they're normally nowhere to be seen and waste little time entering lockdown. Keep a low profile. Wait until things (hopefully) blow over. Blame the whole unedified ruckus on a few ungrateful bad bells who, unlike them, don't have the clubs best interests at heart.

I guarantee, if we had won that semi-final, Kenwright would have been oozing a smarmy snail trail over every tv camera he could squeeze his mug in front of.

John 48 - you're right in that this has been their usual approach, but in my relatively short lifetime as a Blue (since age 7 in the late 80s), the only other time I can recall such seemingly universal hostility to a manager was at the end of the Smith era. We had crap players and no money then, yet still Kenwright actually took action after that appalling Boro cup tie and sacked him.

Things are arguably just as bad now, if not worse given where we should be with this squad. I felt sure defeat in the semi took us to or below the Walter Smith nadir and that the Board could ignore the situation no longer. Seems I was wrong...!

Just responding to the title of this post: What I want to see is the players kicking full-on Martinez tiki-taka aside, let the defenders be defenders and everyone from the defense to the midfield vary their front-line passing options with the true intent of tiki-taka (to move the ball fast between players until the ideal opening for a long/short forward pass presents itself)!

Well, that's my take on it. Use whatever players you want. :P

I don't understand why everyone is getting on the boards back about not making an announcement, they don't have to, they are in charge, there is a manager under contract to the club, it's continue as normal.

If people are so desperate to get the manager out of the club before anyone is ready to tell anyone my suggestion is to stump up your cash and buy the club then you can do what you want.

I agree with Stones – so much class; play him further forward. Coleman played his best football in front of Howard – why not play a defensive right-back and play Coleman in front? I would also try the same with Baines in front of a defensive left-back.

Barry must play and if Barkley can't or won't track back and tackle play him up front. Mirallas could also given a run in a Vardy type roll.

You are right: we all think we can do a better job than the "manager" – I just think a lot could be done with this squad instead of same old same old. Change it till something clicks and go from there. I would have hoped Martinez would have been able to put right but not now.

I like the ideas in the article!

Personally, I think the youngsters will add something else that we haven't had this season – some passion, and the desire to do well and prove themselves. Unlike a lot of the players this season, who have relied on their hype and potential instead of working hard!

But of course the right balance of youth and experience will be key – Dowell, Pennington, Connolly and Galloway, as well as Niasse will hopefully get some time.

Say what you want about Niasse, the only thing he has had enough time to prove for me, is that he is willing to work hard and play for the team.

I would really like more players like that next season, Lazy Lukaku can piss off with his attitude lately.

My vote for one of the signings in the summer – Georgio Wijnhaldum... Quality team play and has the ability!

It's going to be same old same old with a couple of cameos from out-going 'fantastic servants' thrown in for good measure and a few minutes here and there for the stars of the future. Where necessity dictates square pegs in round holes (Besic- getting hung out to dry)

The only thing I want to see from the team in the remaining games is someone else managing them.

Zoid (#57), I hope you never become manager of Everton. Niasse doesn't even look like he can play. And as for Wijnhaldum are you having some sort of laugh that useless twat is getting relegated with the team he is with now. Also when was the last time he scored. There's better players in League One.

You could pick any team under this manager and we will get smashed.

We are no longer a team, just 11 individuals plus subs under this manager. We have been for some time. There were some terrible performances last season and more this. There will be even more next unless we have a change.

RM does not meet the club's expectations and he has to go. The players are not stupid. They read the posts and know he is a dead man walking.

Get rid. Get a new guy in and unite the team asap.

It breaks my heart to look at Everton at the moment, the manager is clueless, the players are apathetic and listless and the atmosphere in the ground is toxic. Meanwhile Bullshit Billy gives us his considered opinion, "what a manager".
What a manager indeed, Martinez is either as big a bullshitter as Bill or is a seriously delusional individual, either way he has no business being at our football club.

This particular fan wants to see the back of Lukaku asap.
A top goalscorer who is not interested in Everton.

I want to see Stones remind the board that he hasn't withdrew the transfer request he put in, and get shut asap.

I want to see McCarthy sold, a popular retort is "what about the running he does "
No denying that, problem is he doesn't want the ball.

Give the new manager the incoming transfer fees and lets see where that takes us.
