I think the trip away is a good idea as it gives the players a change of scenery, a bit of team building, a holiday away but with the hard work also. It can only help to motivate them rather than continue in the wet and freezing cold of Finch Farm.

The response up to now is what the game – and especially Everton – deserve: nothing to say. We were crap. Nothing else to say.

Is this the second warm weather training jaunt this season or is my memory playing tricks?

Martin (#2),

It's our first.

I travelled to Boro on Saturday, sorry but it was my third trip there and I find it one of the most depressing venues in the UK.

Okay, the dreadful weather didn't help, but the ground itself, located between what look's like a chemical plant, and a large patch of wasteland, simply fails to inspire, despite it being almost on top of what is left of the local dockland.

There is the customary fast food outlet nearby, but very little else. The match itself fizzled out a little in the second half, as a kind of stalemate was always on the cards, as early as the 60th minute.

We desperately lack creativity and a little guile in the final third, a problem which has been present all season, and hopefully will be addressed in the summer.

Finally, a word of praise for Joel Robles. Last season, I genuinely thought he had played his last game for Everton, but his overall game has improved 100%. He grows in confidence the longer he stays in the side, and his catching and punching under pressure is one of his strong points.

He made a stupendous instinct save from the late Gestede header which was destined for the top corner.

He fully deserves his place in the team at the moment. Hope I've not put the 'mockers' on him!!

Do I take it that Middlesbrough is not a top ten holiday destination in the UK?

Cheers Ken. Tempus fugit - just seem to recall a fairly recent one that didn't have the desired effect! Probably years ago!

Steve (#5), it was my second trip. Couldn't agree more with your summary!

Ken, re the jollies, rather depends on how the trouble and strife and kids take it.

"Sorry, love, no work this week so just off for a few days in the sun with the lads. Not my idea, love, honest."

Martin, Everton went on a mini break with Martinez and performed worse than they had done before they went, much worse.

Christopher (#6) Middlesbrough is not even in the bottom ten of UK holiday destinations. At least theses days you don't get thumped outside the ground or have coins and golf balls thrown at you inside the ground like you did in the seventies and eighties.

Ken – I also noticed Tom Davies hoof the ball away after the final whistle. Last player I can remember doing that was Tim Cahill at White Hart Lane in 2010 after a 1-1 draw. We could do with more than one player in the team who hates not winning games.

Cheers, Dave – that must be the one I'm thinking of!
