Everton reject Breen demands

David Moyes: patiently waiting for the right signing to come along

The search goes on for David Moyes as he tries to land his first signing as Everton boss after Gary Breen's salary expectations scuppered his chance to join the Blues on a free transfer from Coventry City.

The Republic of Ireland defender held three rounds of talks at Goodison last week but while Everton officials were optimistic that he would sign on the dotted line, it has been announced that the deal has collapsed and Breen will consider other options elsewhere. The failure to agree personal terms is thought to be the sticking point, with Moyes trying to maintain a more rigid pay structure.

Despite having a relatively successful World Cup campaign with Ireland in Korea this summer, Breen wasn't seen as the answer to Everton's defensive problems by all of the supporters.

Last season illustrated just how much the Blues first team is lacking in pace and Breen is not known for his speed. In fact, he could be regarded as poorer man's David Weir; a tidy defender who weighs in with his share of goals.

Along with Derby goalkeeper Mart Poom, Breen was among ten players about whose availability Moyes has enquired since the end of last season. So far, he has had little success in the transfer market as he seeks to juggle a meagre £5m transfer kitty and Everton's reduced stature in the domestic game.
