Ankle injury sidelines Everton dynamo
James McCarthy will be forced to sit out of the Republic of Ireland's four upcoming friendlies because of an ankle injury.

The midfielder enjoyed a relatively injury-free season in the Premier League but won't now be able to play in his country's games against Turkey, Italy, Costa Rica and Portugal.

His Everton team-mates Seamus Coleman, Shane Duffy and Aiden McGeady are in the squad, however. Darron Gibson has not been included as he continues his recovery from a long-term injury.

The Ireland squad will assemble on in Malahide on Thursday to prepare for friendlies against Turkey at the Aviva Stadium on May 25th, Italy at Fulham's Craven Cottage on May 31st, Costa Rica in Philadelphia on June 6th and Portugal in New Jersey on June 10th.

Ireland squad: Forde, Elliot, R Keogh, Wilson, Coleman, O'Shea, Pearce, Kelly, Delaney, Duffy, Hendrick, Clark, Ward, Whelan, Green, McGeady, Pilkington, McClean, Quinn, Meyler, Hoolahan, Keane, Long, D Murphy, Walters, Doyle, Stokes, Cox and Sammon.
