Season › 2019-20 › News Gomes thanks Blues for 'unconditional support' Lyndon Lloyd Wednesday, 6 November, 2019 24comments | Jump to most recent André Gomes has thanked the Everton community for its support this week as he begins his recovery from the fracture dislocation of his ankle he sustained on Sunday. The Portuguese was released from hospital yesterday after undergoing surgery on Monday and he took to social media to post a video for Everton fans in which he said: Hi everyone. As you know, everything went well. I am already at home with my family and I would like to thank you all for the supportive messages and the positive energy. Thank you. Gomes is now in the care of Everton's medical staff at Finch Farm who will guide him through his recovery after a successful operation but no timescale has been put on his return by the club. Thank you for your unconditional support! ðŸ™Obrigado pelo vosso apoio incondicional! ðŸ™Â¡Muchas gracias por todo vuestro apoyo! 🙠pic.twitter.com/KEz31pvWD2— André Gomes (@aftgomes) November 6, 2019 Writing for The Athletic, Greg O'Keeffe and Patrick Boyland contacted Ahmad Malik, an orthopaedic surgeon at The London Foot and Ankle Clinic who specialises in sports trauma injuries and he explained that while the injury that Gomes suffered is a serious one and might have ended his career 20 years ago, thanks to modern techniques, he should make a full recovery. “Ankle fractures aren't comparable with apples and pears — you get little cherries and you get watermelons,” Malik said. “A fracture-dislocation is like a watermelon — it's a big one. When you dislocate a joint, it's potentially quite serious. Not only have you broken bones, but the soft tissue has also been disrupted. That's the problem. “Even if you put the bones back together, the healing and the recovery can be quite complicated. But with modern techniques, you can get fantastic results. Twenty years ago, this could have potentially been a career-ending injury but he should be fine.” Once the initial swelling and inflammation has been managed, Gomes will begin extensive hydrotherapy — work in a pool where the weight on the joint is minimised — and perhaps, according to Barry Sigrist, a director at BFitter Physiotherapy and Performance Clinic, ice compression and electrotherapy and then a programme of progressive loading that gradually increases the strength of the ankle to help the bone heal and become “mechanically rigid”, as was the case with James McCarthy and Seamus Coleman following their respective leg breaks. “Exercise will be key from relatively early,” Sigrist explained, “particularly in the muscles you want to preserve like the hips, thighs and abdominals — getting him to be able to move the joint under no load as soon as he can tolerate. The sooner you do it, the lower chance of it becoming much more tricky joint-wise in the future.” Reader Comments (24) Note: the following content is not moderated or vetted by the site owners at the time of submission. Would mean a lot I imagine.Let's show some unity and show we aren't always squabbling. Get well soon lad. Steve Ferns 3 Posted 06/11/2019 at 19:45:20 Done dermot. He looks drained. Turns out he was at finch farm yesterday. Let's hope he gets rest and starts doing what's described above. Also interesting to hear Silvas comments about him. He sounds like one of the main guys in the dressing room and we'll miss him. But he's also a model professional and so silva thinks he will be back strong. Liam Reilly 4 Posted 06/11/2019 at 19:46:28 Indeed Dermot - a positive thread. Come back soon Andre, we need you. Jim Burns 5 Posted 06/11/2019 at 19:55:44 Get well André - we need you mate. Now the rest of you use this and get the season started. Martin Nicholls 6 Posted 06/11/2019 at 20:18:57 Meanwhile, Son has made a miraculous recovery from his trauma and leads Tottenham out tonight amid a "show of support" from his team mates. No shame or indeed remorse. Brian Williams 7 Posted 06/11/2019 at 20:23:16 Well I'd take him some flowers and grapes but the original restraining order still has a while to run yet. Dermot Byrne 9 Posted 06/11/2019 at 20:56:16 Martin NichollsHumanity lad. Get a grip Paul Birmingham 10 Posted 06/11/2019 at 21:25:04 Andre, here's to a full recovery, get well and come back stronger than ever.EFC fans are with you all the way, on the road to full recovery and fitness. Chris Leyland 12 Posted 06/11/2019 at 21:52:28 Martin, it's ok because Son apologised to the camera after scoring. As Andre lies at home dosed up on prescription pain killers whilst facing a 6-8 month lay-off and months of intensive and painful rehabilitation, he can take great comfort that the bloke whose actions led to his injury said sorry (but not before appealing his red card so that he didn't have to miss any games himself whilst Andre will miss 25-30.) David Pearl 13 Posted 06/11/2019 at 22:12:34 I have nothing against Son, just thought it's bad form from Spurs. Onwards and upwards for Gomes and Everton. And l'm making a point now never to comment on this again. Christy Ring 15 Posted 06/11/2019 at 22:34:43 Sorely missed, and all the best in his recovery. Disappointed Spurs appealed, as for Son's apology after scoring, means Nothing to me. Martin Berry 16 Posted 06/11/2019 at 23:44:22 Get well and take your time, its your life and your ankle, you also have a life to live after football. John Reynolds 17 Posted 07/11/2019 at 02:03:37 After André's hugathon last year, if anyone could organise a reverse one to help him feel better, I'd jump on the first plane to get there. Jerome Shields 18 Posted 07/11/2019 at 04:23:36 Good luck with your recovery. Derek Knox 19 Posted 07/11/2019 at 05:08:51 David @ 13, considering Son was so distraught after the event and incidentally getting a Red Card I to the equation, some were even suggesting he wouldn't be mentally capable of playing his next match. The subsequent and rather hasty rescinding of the aforementioned, has had a Lazarus effect on Son who played in the CL game for Spurs, scoring two goals into the bargain.Who's conning who?I'm afraid I am becoming extremely disillusioned, both with events at Everton recently, and certainly decisions that are being made by the Football Authorities! Jim Harrison 20 Posted 07/11/2019 at 08:29:41 I don't think you can really blame Spurs for appealing. You can blame the authorities for upholding their appeal though Martin Nicholls 21 Posted 07/11/2019 at 09:00:37 Dermot #9 – seems like you are in the minority on here. Maybe it's you who needs to get a grip "lad". Paul A Smith 22 Posted 07/11/2019 at 09:00:51 The way things are going and having just read about Son's terrible time since the weekend, it looks like the press may demand Gomes apologise to Son for being the victim of his sly challenge and putting him through such an emotional state... Paul Birmingham 23 Posted 07/11/2019 at 09:52:45 We must stick together and move on, let's forget Spurs, and fight to stay up and focus on Southamton. Jimmy Hogan 24 Posted 07/11/2019 at 12:28:31 This club will only be great again when we stop feeling sorry for ourselves. Jim Bennings 26 Posted 07/11/2019 at 13:29:24 Catastrophic run of events that summed up a terrible game on Sunday let's be honest. If in the first place that prize knobhead Martin Atkinson had booked Son for diving then I very much doubt that Son even considers going after Gomes like that.I don't understand quite how Aurier has got off blame free either to be honest, what he did was far worse than Son's, diving in two footed was a proper shitbags tackle and he would have caught Gomes full on even if Son hadn't hacked at him.I'm not going to start getting on any high horses though because the week earlier at Brighton, Mason Holgate went in with a thunderous stupid potentially dangerous lunge on Maupay.Andre Gomes himself stamped on a Fulham player and got sent off for it in April at Craven Cottage so I'm not going down that Kopite road of always being the victim as we have previous ourselves. My best wishes go to Gomes and I'm quite confident he'll be back on the pitch come next August or at the latest early October. Richard Pike 27 Posted 07/11/2019 at 17:30:26 Jimmy (24) is right, and self-pity is exactly how all the Son-bashing is coming across to me. He clearly meant to foul Gomes, but I'm sure not to injure him (he's no Roy Keane). Cynical fouls happen all the time, our players are probably as guilty of it as anyone else's and it's just really really unfortunate that this one ended in a serious injury. I have little sympathy for Son but victimising him isn't going to achieve anything. John Davies 28 Posted 09/11/2019 at 16:30:45 By the time he gets back, maybe we will have a decent manager. Phil Lewis 29 Posted 13/11/2019 at 10:04:50 I wish Andre a speedy recovery. He is quite simply the best footballer at the club. I cannot believe the venom being aimed at Son on here. Have the culprits responsible ever played the game at any level? Son is not a dirty player and it wasn't a vicious tackle intended to cause injury. These things happen in football. It could just have easily been him on the other end of a Gomes challenge resulting in a similar injury. His distraught reaction was genuine. The fact that Coleman and other Everton players went to the Spurs dressing room to comfort him confirmed this. A wonderful sporting gesture, which restored my faith in what the game is supposed to be all about, especially in these cynical, high finance, win at all cost times. What do people expect Son to do? Go into mourning? Get counselling? Not play? Not score goals? He's a professional footballer for God's sake! He behaved impeccably as far as I am concerned. Spurs had every right to challenge his red card. Football is supposedly a contact sport, injuries inevitably occur. In this instance, it was sheer bad luck, nothing else, which resulted in Andre's horrific trauma.I suppose people nowadays are up in arms over tackles, because so much physicality has been removed from the game. I vividly remember the Norman Hunter, Dave Mckay, Tommy Smith, type 'cloggers'. Most teams had them. That type of player cannot exist in the modern game. To be honest, at the risk of sounding controversial, I miss them. And in the same way, in these times of VAR, which I believe to be a disaster for football, I miss the days of 'The Referees decision being final'. Football was a far better spectacle when it was 'Opera for the working man'. Instead, it is in danger of becoming a computer game decided by faceless people.
