It's the teenager's first pro deal and ties him to the Blues until 2024. Jenson Metcalfe graduated to the Under-18s at the beginning of 2021 and started 7 league games, coming on as sub in 3 more games (plus one FA Youth Cup game), scoring goals against Stoke City and Sunderland. Disclaimer Phill Thompson 1 Posted 08/09/2021 at 19:48:10 That's great news, Metcalfe has been probably our best player at U18 this season. He had an excellent debut for the U23s last season in a streamed match against Brighton and looked very composed as a 16-year-old. There's nothing startlingly outstanding about him so forget about him breaking into the first team this season as his next task will be to get a regular place in our U23s midfield. From what I've seen of him, he's played in the 2 of a defensive midfield role; tall, thin, tackles robustly, positions himself well and has a good range of passes. My memories from the Brighton game was of him being bundled off the ball by a bigger player and Brighton going on to score, then producing a sublime curving ball forward into their box with Bowler running on to it and being brought down for a penalty from which we scored. It's good to see we've given him a 3-year contract so soon. Justin Doone 2 Posted 08/09/2021 at 22:43:51 Sounds similar to Rodwell? Steve Shave 3 Posted 08/09/2021 at 22:47:32 Not sure how many "sublime curving balls" Rodwell played in an Everton shirt? Maybe we can turn him into a centre back? 🤔 Paul Kernot 4 Posted 08/09/2021 at 23:40:07 Or a right back Steve! He'll be ready for the 1st team by the time Seamus is 40 and ready to take up his place on the coaching team. Phill Thompson 5 Posted 09/09/2021 at 09:11:34 Eeek, hope young Jenson doesn't get labelled as the new Rodwell! My iPad skills are not great but “that sublime curving ball†occurs about 42 m 30 sec of match play. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFyX_-nWED4 Mick Roberts 6 Posted 11/09/2021 at 13:06:29 hope he is given a chance and not forced to progress elsewhere due to lack of first team appearances like some others who have gone on to better things Add Your Comments In order to post a comment, you need to be logged in as a registered user of the site. » Log in now Or Sign up as a ToffeeWeb Member — it's free, takes just a few minutes and will allow you to post your comments on articles and Talking Points submissions across the site.
