Patterson unlikely to make Scotland's World Cup playoff

It doesn't look as though Nathan Patterson will be fit in time to represent Scotland in their World Cup qualifying playoff semi-final against Ukraine on 1st June but is expected to be fit later next month.

The young full-back joined Everton from Rangers during the January transfer window but, unfortunately, sustained ankle ligament damage right when he was on the cusp of breaking into the Blues' first team and had to undergo surgery that ended his season prematurely.

Patterson is on the recovery trail and has been included in Steve Clarke's 28-man squad for Scotland's World Cup play-off games (they will have two if they can beat the Ukrainians and earn a decider against Wales on 5th June) and three Uefa Nations League match-ups this summer, two against Armenia either side of a trip Ireland.

"I think at some stage over the four, or hopefully five, matches Nathan will be fit to play," Clarke said. "His return to play is imminent and it will just come down to match fitness. I would put him down as doubtful for the Ukraine game."

Patterson is highly-regarded and will be hopeful of pushing for a regular first-team role with Everton under Frank Lampard next season.

Looking forward to seeing him in action in pre-season games. It's been a while coming but obviously he's highly rated and just the type of full-back we need.

My wish for next season is the headline: "Everton player injured, expected to miss the next two games"

We just don't seem to do slight injuries anymore...

Would have been good to see our 2 full-backs square off against each other in the playoff game, but not to be. Also, probably Zinchenko is ahead of Mykolenko for the left-back position for Ukraine?

Anyway, I hope he stays injury-free next season and becomes our long term right-back. With due respect to Seamus's achievements, that has been a glaring weakness in our playing XI for the past 2 seasons.

A real shame because I believe he has the talent to be a top class modern attacking full-back.

Lots of recovery and hopefully plenty of games time in the next few years.
