Everton have been offered free agent Willian

16/01/2025 76comments  |  Jump to last

Everton are reported to be one of the clubs who have been offered former Chelsea star Willian, who is now a free agent. Willian left Greek club Olympiacos after only 6 months, meaning he can sign for a club as a free transfer this month.

It is understood the Brazilian has been offered to more than one Premier League club, one of which is Everton.

The Telegraph reports that Everton are understood to have shown an interest in the 36-year-old winger, but also have other targets and are yet to make it clear whether they will make a move.

Matt Law claims that Willian would be able to make an instant impact for manager David Moyes’s team, who are in desperate need of forward players who can score goals, having already played in the Premier League for Chelsea, Arsenal and Fulham.

Fulham captain Tom Cairney this month described Willian as the best player he has ever played with, saying: “Willian, it’s not even close. I think football brain, out of this world.

“In my opinion, I don’t think he gets the recognition he deserves in the Premier League. I think he was one of the best players in the Premier League for four or five years, but because he played in the same team as Eden Hazard, who kind of took a lot of the limelight – and rightly so, he was the best player – but I thought Willian was special, very special.”

Moyes has made it clear that he would like new players this month and, with a limited budget, Willian could be attractive to Everton.

Everton are also likely to be in the market for a striker after Moyes revealed on-loan Armando Broja could be out with an ankle injury for up to 12 weeks and may return to Chelsea.

Moyes is said to be a fan of Chelsea pair Carney Chukwuemeka and Ben Chilwell, who could both leave Stamford Bridge on loan this month, but he would need to free up space to make another domestic loan by releasing either Broja or Jack Harrison.

We need to do something, sign him up if what he wants is not silly.

He is quality and the Moyesiah wants quality. His wage demands will settle if we go for him.

Another free agent is Enis Bardhi, an Albanian International and Captain. His stats look good. Does anyone know anything more about him? He's just left Trabzonspor in Turkey. Several Spanish clubs after him.

He is old and normally I would say, "No, thanks", but Willian at Fulham was infinitely better than Harrison or Lindstrom.

Mind you, that is a very low bar.

FFS, 36.

Talent is out there, check this goal, Yeovil!

I'm not saying let's get him, but players out there in all divisions, who would have scored the Calvert-Lewin chances that are regularly being missed. Goals has to be priority, surely.

Sean @ 3, the Tea-Lady shits on Doucoure, but she never gets picked! :-)

Free Transfer sounds okay in the desperate situation we are in, he's a youngster compared to Young.

Get him in without hesitation, the guy knows what a football is and what to do with it – unlike some in the team at the moment.

This is exactly what I raised.

Unpopular choice perhaps, but he's a good honest pro. Only 36, still has legs in him, and has quality in abundance. Knows how to play the game.

We need good honest pros to see us thru to the end of the season and out from yet another bloody relegation battle.

He still had ‘it’ at Fulham but not sure exactly why he left them and has left Olympiacos after six months.
If his heart is still in it he looks like a decent short term squad booster.

Ben 😂😂

Im just saying if it’s a 6 month deal, he can still cut the mustard.

What I am concerned about is the real downbeat feeling that Moyes portrayed after the game.

This is not the downbeat nature of someone disappointed of losing their first game on return, it runs deeper. I'm convinced Davey is wondering what the hell he’s walked into and how the hell he is going to get us out this mess.

I have never seen him look so despondent and so deflated.

Willian at 36 if we sign him, would probably be the best crosser of the ball at the club, having said that, we really miss McNeill.

Half time in Ipswich vs Brighton and Nathan Broadhead is one of the better players on the pitch. If it was Thelwell's decision to let him go for 1.5 million then he should go as well. Instead we are paying a loan fee and a big salary to the grossly inferior Jack Harrison.
No wonder we are in a mess.

So Southampton were gone ages ago, jeezz,, they're playing against manure, wish Everton could buy a couple off there squad and play like them.

Unexplainable how long these comments take me to write. Andrew beat me to the punch plus made more sense.

As for Moysey looking shell-shocked in a previous comment, personally I am very pleased that's his reaction.

Now we'll see what he's made of, no Uncle Billy Bullshit to hide behind, I reckon Davey is going to shine, hopefully quick smart. We really are due some good times.

Go for it. What have we got to lose? Got to cost very little in the scheme of things and even at 36+ he's got more idea of where the goal is than any of our present shower.

We've got to do something or slide ignominiously into the Championship. A 6-month contract and I bet he'd score more goals than our present top scorer — Craig Dawson!

Ricky Oak

I cannot believe we can turn our noses up at players with Willian's ability; however, I would rather just build from scratch now.

Willian would command way too much moola and find easier pay elsewhere.

Need no more mercenaries here, need hungry professional monsters with hearts as big as the tunnel.

Stu Darlington

Ricky
We don’t have time to build from scratch.
A short term contract,no transfer fee,for a proven goal scorer?
Seems to be acceptable risk for me.Sure he’s a mercenary, all professional footballers are, their careers are relatively short and they must look for the best contracts they can get.
As for too much moola, how much do you think a hungry professional monster with a heart as big as the tunnel would cost? And by the way,do you know any?

Broja, Harrison out, DCL sold for whatever - Willian, Chilwell and Chuky-what's his face in NOW + give Armstrong more game time.

But we know all our dealings will be at 1155 on the last day and whoever we get won't be fit to kick a ball for another 3 weeks after that...then promptly get injured.

Oh and have a serious rethink about Tom Cannon too.

Desperate times require desperate measures...not fannying about.

Proper footballer Willian and can score a goal or two. Can’t see how he can be demanding too much money because he only went back to Brazil a couple of years ago and they pay very little in comparison to here.
Only issue is why he can’t nail down a spot in other teams so my guess is there’s something not quite right with his discipline or character.

Regreattbly, current situation I would take Willian.
He can cross a fucking ball which is beyond any of our current lot (bar McNeil) and we've proven with a set piece situation, with good delivery, we are a threat.

If Moyes moves to a back 3 as well, meaning Jake O'Brien on the pitch too, that increases. Willian now currently offers more than Harrison, or Doucoure, it's plain to see.

All Doucoure does is run around and press and make a nuisance of himself – fine if he does something when he wins the ball but it's few and far between that he doesnt just give it straight back.

Broja – if we can terminate the loan contract, it's a no-brainer. Even if we have to pay the wages for the remainder. Let's not forget, that would open up a loan spot for a Premier League player (Chilwell as competition to Mykolenko, Evan Ferguson, Carney Cuckawezy, K Dewsbury Hall, theres options and three of those play for Chelsea so it might work for them too, making it easier).

Harrison – just go. My heart sank the other day when I saw that teamsheet. I was hoping for a total change in his respect.

If we bought Mangala, in my head, that means we get another non-Premier League loan spot? This has to be explored although I am not as keen as a lot of posters about him. But that purchase would mean a new spot for another non-Premier League player who could help this woeful situation.

Lindstrom might be able to do a job if played either much further forward (see his cross to Calvert-Lewin last minute against Villa) or maybe centrally but I'm not convinced.

Another possible one to explore sending back to his parent club.

I think the position we find ourselves in, I'd get this fella — he is a footballer... I say 'footballer' because that is exactly what he is. He has a bit of nouse about him.

His age… yea but it has been mentioned. He's far superior to Harrison, McNeil. 6 months – let him join the relegation battle.

Other Saga members available on a free are:

CB: Sergio Romas, a sprightly 38, CF: Diego Costa 36, LB: Marcelo 36.

We could sell Beto, bring in competition for DCL and Marcelo can support William on the left in an all Brazil left side - what's not to like.

I'd take William, as he is better in craft and guile, imho, than we have.

Tbf, he's too sharp for this squad, and that's being totally honest, even thought he's clocked a few years.

But I'm sure Moyes, will get a team out on Sunday who will, kill(literally to get 3 points).

No shirkers this Sunday, in the Everton squad.

6 months, low salary with significant performance bonuses. Thats the only way I would want him. If he isn’t playing he doesn’t cost much, if he plays and gets goals or assists he earns his keep. Could do with some invention in the team.

Someone posted I. The thread about chilwell. I think that would be a good signing at the right price. We only have one real option at LB and he is waaaaay better than Myko.

Interesting, as a motivated player Willian would be a great signing, if he is just coming for the money, them my answer would be a big no. It is a simple as that. Pay as you play to the end of the season? I doubt any other PL club would have him because of his age. Get Richarlison back and sign Willian, then I think we would be a totally different team.

Doucoucre isn't playing well, he's not alone there. Though comparing him to the tea lady seems a little harsh.

Without him, we would be in the Championship already.

Sam Hoare

Willian has always struck me as a consummate professional who could still offer something at the ripe age of 37.

He will have naturally lost a bit of his acceleration but still has great technique and a footballing IQ few of our players could match.

If Nuamah offers raw pace and unpredictability and is a player who may not contribute significantly straight away, then Willian is a player who could hit the ground running and is often likely to see the right pass and make a good decision in the final third.

Having said that, Willian had a minimal impact at Olympiacos and any deal would have to be the right financial package.

Robert Tressell
54 Posted 19/01/2025 at 10:23:26
I think Willian could be a canny short-term signing too, Sam. Brilliant technique and footballing brain.

We'd need to surround him with more pace and athleticism than we've currently got to make it work - but that might be where the likes of Nuamah and Fellows come in.

Conor McCourt

Posters keep mentioning Chilwell but having watched him quite a bit last season I reckon he would be a terrible signing and isn't half the player he used to be.

Chilwell plays a few games and gets injured. He is poor defensively and especially in a back four. His wages are astronomical and he strikes me as a bit wishy washy.

I don't think a new left back is a priority but if we were to sign one I would prefer Zinchenko. When he went to Arsenal his influence along with Jesus made them into a champions League team with their mindset, character and professionalism key factors.

Zinchenko isn't the greatest defensively either but is a much better footballer than Chilwell. He also offers flexibility because he might actually be a better central midfielder. I think he could be a bit like a Phil Neville type signing if we got him and is perfect for our predicament as he would raise standards immediately.

Si Pulford
56 Posted 19/01/2025 at 10:58:54
He’s two years younger than Young who has been one of our best performers. We need numbers and we need attacking capabilities. Seems a no brainer on a short term contract.
Colin Glassar
57 Posted 19/01/2025 at 11:08:57
Conor, Chilwell has nice hair. Since Gomes left we’ve been lacking in that department.

On another note, very few full backs are great defensively these days. Long gone are the days of Tommy Wright, Mike Pejic, Tommy Smith (gobshite, I know). Solid defenders whose job was to defend and stop crosses into the box.

Cafu and Roberto Carlos heralded in the attacking full back model. Brilliant going forward but not rock solid defending.

Si Pulford
58 Posted 19/01/2025 at 11:18:06
Conor that’s a bit selective in terms of wages. Zinchenko isn’t on peanuts.
Robert Tressell
59 Posted 19/01/2025 at 11:33:57
Conor, I agree Chilwell could be a terrible signing. But mostly because of his injury record. Fans are currently lambasting Thelwell for signing Broja - and Chilwell has also missed tonnes of football due to injury. He's also on £200k per week - absolutely miles more than our highest earners. I suspect it's a non starter unless Chelsea are willing to release him on a free.

As for Zinchenko, again agree with you. Super player. He's on £120k per week which would make him our second highest earner after Doucoure. Possibly doable. Might cost about £20m to £30m? Again, possibly doable although would soak up most / all of our budget. However, he's being linked with the likes of Inter Milan and Dortmund. I can't see why he'd be remotely interested in joining Everton.

Another observation; I think everyone on the match thread was taken with Bournemouth's squad yesterday. Interesting to note that Bournemouth by no players from Premier League clubs at all. The nearest they come is from relegated clubs and the Championship. We'd do well to do likewise - Premier League players are the most overpriced (fee and wages) in world football.

Conor McCourt
60 Posted 19/01/2025 at 11:37:49
Si just had a look and it turns out you are right. I thought he would be on no more than 100k a week and presumed his contract would be finishing soon.

Apparently he went from 20k at City to signing a 5 yr contract which is only half way through. Therefore mine is a poor offering as he would command a decent fee also.

I know that Chilwell is on double that and presumed Arsenal would be willing to deal as he's behind Timber Skelly and Tierney currently in the pecking order.

Si file that one under the stupid suggestion category.

Robert just read your post so you have covered most of my thoughts

Conor I do agree that he would fit and agree with the Phil Neville comparison.

To be honest I thought he was on more. 100-120 wouldn’t be too out of line with our top earners.

Rumours Sheff u want Keane in the window so could free up a similar amount. Job done- Problem is attracting him to a car crash from a champions league club.

Not for me. He will want big wages, and for me we need to getting rid of old players on big wages.

This story reminds me of a mate who proudly told me that he'd been "offered" the latest top of the range iphone for free. After 2 years at more than sixty quid per month, I imagine he feels a bit of a tit.

Regarding Willian, I'd happily see him in an Everton shirt as long as he's paid the equivalent of a mid range smart phone. He's certainly not a premium player these days, but could probably do a good job.

This thread is proof that no-one knows a good player any more.

Has Thelwell not taught you anything?

Our dof is not fit for purpose, replace him with Moyes after he's kept us up. I am hopeful at this time because only Moyes has the right philosophical approach - will they improve the team? Yes or no? Will they be better than what we've got? Yes or no?

Advocating signing another pensioner means you've learned nothing from Ashley young " our best player" yet Moyes drops him immediately and we start winning?

No more "do a job" players ffs

Dean, we can't afford to buy established top players or even rising stars. Once our biggest loss making years drop off Summer 26 we may be able to splash a bit then.

Until then it is do a job and bodies in positions sadly. Just because some of us recognise it doesn't mean we like it.

TFG will give David Moyes £33.5M to spend on 2 new attacking players before the close of the transfer window.

Nottingham Forest Striker, Taiwo Awoniyi as well Hamza Igamane, Marcus Edwards, Evan Ferguson and Brian Brobbey are all named on a shortlist

I think best scenario currently is probably swapping Broja loan for Dewsbury-Hall, getting Nuamah or some other pacey winger/forward for £15m and maybe getting cheap full-back cover like Lamptey or Walker-Peters for a few million.

Perhaps if Torino stump up some cash for Beto we could make the (small) upgrade to someone like Awoniyi from Forest. Igamane will probably be too expensive and am not sure he has the game to play lone forward in the PL.
