The World Cup finally reaches critical mass with a full slate of four matches after the USA put in an impressive performance to score 4 goals against Paraguay in the early hours.

Qatar v Switzerland (Group B)

Venue: San Francisco Bay Area Stadium, California

The evening session begins with an intriguing cross-continental clash in California as Switzerland open their tournament account against Qatar.

The Swiss arrive with their typical quiet confidence, looking to assert dominance early in Group B. Built around tactical discipline and midfield stability, Murat Yakin’s side will rely heavily on their tournament experience to boss the tempo. Qatar, meanwhile, are no longer the wide-eyed debutants of 2022. They will play a deeply compact, defensive shape and rely purely on long-ball transitions to test a robust Swiss backline.

Brazil v Morocco (Group C)

Kick-off: 23:00 BST

Venue: New York New Jersey Stadium, East Rutherford

The undisputed heavyweight clash of the day takes place in East Rutherford. It's a rematch of their famous 2023 friendly where Morocco stunned the Seleção—meaning revenge is firmly on the menu.

Brazil enter the tournament among the heavy favourites, carrying the usual weight of immense dynamic expectation. They will look to dominate possession, utilising a terrifying front line to overwhelm the Moroccans with raw individual skill. However, Morocco’s defensive cohesion is legendary. The Atlas Lions will set up a stubborn mid-block, looking to squeeze the space in midfield and hit Brazil with rapid wide overloads through their wingbacks.

Haiti v Scotland (Group C)

Venue: Boston Stadium, Massachusetts

For the night owl Evertonians, the early hours of Sunday morning offer a massive occasion for the Tartan Army as they make their long-awaited return to the global stage against tournament underdogs Haiti.

Scotland will view this as an absolute must-win if they have any ambitions of escaping Group C. Steve Clarke will demand high intensity from the opening whistle, looking to use their physical edge from set-pieces and overlapping midfield runs. Haiti are unpredictable, athletic, and completely unburdened by pressure. They will look to exploit any early tournament nerves with high-energy counter-attacking.

Everton's Nathan Patterson is not expected to start but will likely figure among the subs.

Australia v Turkey (Group D)

Venue: BC Place, Vancouver

The marathon session concludes at the crack of dawn in Vancouver with a highly explosive, contrasting clash of styles between the Socceroos and a technical Turkish outfit.

Turkey bring a squad brimming with technical flair, capable of playing gorgeous, intricate transitional football. They will want to establish early control of the ball, moving Australia's defensive block side-to-side. The Socceroos will counter that with sheer physical industry, relentless pressing, and direct aerial service into the box.

First real good looking game today with Brazil Vs Morocco.
Hoping for a good game and a Morocco win.
Tough group for the Scots, they need 3 points tonight.

I KNEW I recognised that pitch entrance music!
From the Eye in the Sky - The Alan Parsons Project.

Looking forward to Brazil v Morocco tonight, might just about be able to keep me eyes peeled and watch most of it.

Regardless of what state Brazil are or aren't in right now, there's something to be said about watching them, the iconic kit, the football passion of the country, of course be nice to watch Richarlison.

I remember all those bands, Jeff, liked them, and Punk and New Wave

I listened to Magazine, Geldof and Talking Heads this afternoon...

If punk changed the world we need Malcom McLaren as manager, Lyndon could coach maybe?

Sorry, Andrew, punk changed my world, do you really remember Sit Thee Down?

I think they once played the Phoenix Club in Bolton, Send Them Shoes Back was their biggest hit.

To be fair, Andrew, if you liked all those and punk you've got a particularly catholic taste. Apart from Geldof, he's a twat.

Jeff,

Probably more interesting than t' World Cup... but the only Sit Thee Down I can find on TIDAL is a track and album by The Oldham Tinkers. Not exactly progressive rock. No group of that name...

Oh wait, there's a different track by The Houghton Weavers.

Geldof is a twat and Johnnie Fingers is not a good name for a '70s musician. Eric's was church Jeff.

This could easily be a QF match. Missed it, Richarlison did not make the Don's squad? Boss ground.

We could use Paqueta and he fits old fuckin Moyes veteran player profile.

Morocco could be dark horse for this World Cup, look a class outfit.

Alisson in Brazil's goal, she's a massive weak link in my opinion.

Superb finish by Vini Jr.

The dead from that 1970 Brazil team will be spinning in their graves.

They'd still be quicker than Casemiro.
Paul Griffiths
25 Posted 13/06/2026 at 23:57:45
Yep Liam. Thiago, Raphinha, Bruno, Paqueta, Casemiro -- decent looking Premier League team -- did nothing. Brazil rely on an individual not a collective.

Any of Martenelli, Rayan, Ederson, Cunha, Danilo -- decent looking Premier League team -- could come on for 2nd half.

And it picks up, it was looking like a third-place match for a few minutes.

Oh, nevermind. Time for the end of the third quarter. Fuckin yankball, thanks Gianni.

Patterson on the bench, one of the three Jock subs who I recognise.

Patterson on at 75 minutes for Hickey.

My first nomination of a truly under the radar player that we should look at in the transfer market is Jordan Bos of Australia.

Feyenoord. Flying left-back / wing-back. Great touches, incredible pace. Seems positionally solid defensively, although Turkey is attacking mostly up the opposite side.

Will watch for more, but I already really like this kid.
Paul Griffiths

Great goal - proper forward play. Irankunda is at Watford, I think. I'm on Bos.
Mike Gaynes

Irankunda scores for Australia and performs a Cahill tribute boxing celebration at the corner flag.

That Swiss lad Manzambi - Freiburg - looks tasty, Mike.

Aussie goalie did really well to keep a clean sheet. A shot-stopper!

Patrick Beach -- great Aussie name! Just 22. Melbourne City, A-League.

Murph, someone fucked up. Sit thee down or Sit Thi Deawn is a song not a band from a real woolly area.

Enjoy.

Aaarrrggghhh my ears!!!!! Thanks for that, PG!

In other news, I thought Patterson was being heavily protected by his winger and midfield in that 20 minutes. He seemed to be playing as a third centre-back rather than right-back?

In other other news, I've just found out that I play 5-a-sides with his cousin!

And for clarity, I never liked Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Yes or the likes either.

The Eye in the Sky is a nostalgic reminder of a past love. Roxy and Talking Heads were my thing back in the day.

Morocco had the audacity to take the game to Brazil. Some teams played two forwards. Some played out and out wingers, pinning back fullbacks and wing backs, rather than spend 80 minutes covering own full back in own half.

Moyes must be scratching his head... this is crazy stuff…
John Collins

He'll be frothing at the mouth at the way they leave themselves open by attacking.... 😁
