Everton take on Premier League opposition in Edinburgh this evening as the Blues face Newcastle United at Murrayfield Stadium.

The two teams go head-to-head in the Scottish capital as preparations step up for the Premier League campaign.

Everton head into the game on the back of a 3-1 defeat at Stuttgart, continuing a mixed summer of results for David Moyes’s side, who have won twice in five friendly fixtures.

Newcastle beat Valencia in their most recent pre-season outing, as new head coach Matthias Jaissle prepares to lead a new era. It’s been a summer of upheaval for the Magpies, who have seen Eddie Howe step down as manager, and key figures Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali, and Bruno Guimaraes all sold.

Jordan Pickford looks set to make his first appearance of the pre-season with England’s number one back from his post-World Cup break.

Brennan Johnson completed his move to Everton from Crystal Palace on Tuesday and it remains to be seen whether the winger is involved, though Christian Norgaard should feature for the first time. The Danish midfielder was left at Finch Farm during the tour of Germany to get up to speed, following his £7m arrival from Arsenal earlier this month.

Elsewhere, Thierno Barry and Iliman Ndiaye will hope to come in from the start after substitute appearances at Stuttgart. The former scored from the penalty spot for his second goal of the pre-season.

I wonder if this time Moyes picks the best XI, instead of mixing the squad in each half.

Please play O'Brien & Branthwaite together, to give them time to gel, when hopefully we'll have a new fullback before the start of the season.

Christy, he did try on Saturday until Iroegbunam went off injured.

Yes, he could have brought on someone else such as Patterson and moved Röhl into midfield but KDH or N'diaye to replace Iroegbunam really is not an option. So he did the only sensible thing and bring on Keane and move Röhl into midfield as the nearest like for like.

We conceded two more goals when Tim went off. Hardly a sensible decision. Branthwaite and O'Brien had to play from further back to help protect Keane.

Moyes could have put Alcaraz in front of Hackney rather than bring a defender on. It was a friendly and a chance to try something different rather than something which didn't work towards the end of last season.

Talk sport Jamie O'Hara and Gabby Ogbonlahor saying on talk sport. McNeil and Johnson transfer, like swapping crap for crap. Not apparently criticising the team's they are joining, but having a go at Everton and Palace swapping like for like, calling the two players crap. Johnson's reply was he's won more than those two numpties put together.
We all know that most of talk sport is crap, and the presenters especially O'Hare's job along with Jason Cundy is to act like clowns.

Maybe he’ll play O’Brien and Branthwaite in central defence this season, maybe.
The thing is, it would only take one defeat or mistake from either of them and he’d never do it again. They will not be given time to gel.
It would take a serious injury to Tarkowski for this partnership to be given a real chance.
Although, I’m sure Keane would just come in.
Whatever happens, you can guarantee it will be dispiriting and annoying.

I think Michael has predicted the back four that will start against Palace. The one we all desperately do not want to see, but what do we know?
Moyes knows best.
He knows how to finish 13th in this League, and that’s what he’ll deliver again. Guaranteed. Absolutely no drama’s whatsoever, do not worry, nothing will happen this season, everything will be fine.
It’s not mind-numbing stasis, its stability, and that’s a positive word/concept so it must be good for us.

Kevin not a bad selection but I'd have Alcarez instead of Barry who hasn't shown any improvement to me.

Paul#11 It amuses me that we have O'Hara, Gabby, Bothroyd all average footballers, plus Jordan, the self professed experts now. Even the two boys are now backtracking over there comments about Johnson.
