Column David Moyes delighted with his wingers’ output at Molineux After calling out Jack Harrison and Jesper Lindstrom for their lack of attacking output, the manager was pleased with both players combining for the opener against Wolves. Anjishnu Roy 9 March 2025 18comments (last) Just a couple of days ago, David Moyes voiced his displeasure at the lack of goal contributions from his on-loan winger pairing. Jack Harrison and Jesper Lindstrom, on loan from Leeds United and Napoli respectively, had failed to register a goal or an assist this season until Saturday. “Let’s be fair, you won’t have longevity if you’re not going to get me assists and you’re not going to get me goals. You have to find ways of coming up with those numbers, it’s just the world that we’re in,” he sounded off at the pre-match press conference. “We can get all the statistics now and we can talk about it. Those two are both attacking players, I think both of them have done well but yeah, I need goals from them, I need assists from them. They both need to improve. They’ve done a really good job in recent weeks but there's parts of the game we want them to improve on.” The veteran manager’s words seemed to work a trick when both Lindstrom and Harrison combined to score the opening goal for Everton at Molineux Stadium. After collecting the ball from Tarkowski in the final third, Lindstrom lifted his head up to find Harrison in acres of space on the left. He took a touch to make his way into the box and rifled in a shot that took a couple of deflections and beat Jose Sa at his far post. Harrison finally got on the scoresheet for the first time in 39 appearances while Lindstrom registered his first assist of the season which delighted Moyes. “We can't keep expecting Beto [to score]. We need Jesper and Jack to come up with the goals and Jack's got one today, which I'm pleased about. He scored a few goals in his time at Leeds United, so he knows how to do it and I'm glad he got one tonight,” Moyes said post-match. “One's not enough for me, you know, we need [Harrison and Lindstrøm] to come up with more and more assists but I’m pleased they got the goal tonight.” Reader Comments (18) Note: the following content is not moderated or vetted by the site owners at the time of submission. Disclaimer () Robert Tressell 1 Posted 09/03/2025 at 13:17:21 I think he's trying to give Lindstrom encouragement to impress - but he's running out of time. Andrew James 2 Posted 09/03/2025 at 20:07:10 Moyes is right. Whether rightly or wrongly, his former Everton sides used to get a lot of goals and assists from the midfield and defence. That usually was sufficient as it was rare to have a 20 goal a season striker. We need to be able to know we can rely on the flanks and midfielders to score a good amount per season and that just hasn't been the case in recent seasons. Mark Murphy 3 Posted 09/03/2025 at 21:48:00 Its a good article Anji but unless I remember it badly Lindstrom didnt really ping a pass to Harrison. Looked to me like he shaped to shoot and the ball ricocheted off the defender to Jack.Ive not seen a replay but thats how it looked to me?UTFT Liam Mogan 4 Posted 09/03/2025 at 21:50:59 It was definitely a pass Mark Paul Ferry 5 Posted 10/03/2025 at 02:41:58 Yes it was Liam, although I wonder if it was also swimming round in Moysey's mind that neither of them did little much else in the match. Mike Corcoran 6 Posted 10/03/2025 at 08:19:54 This has me humming this: Ian Jones 7 Posted 10/03/2025 at 11:32:50 Mark, as Liam says, it was definitely a pass, although he did slip as he made the pass... Tony Abrahams 8 Posted 10/03/2025 at 20:43:56 I think any manager who wanted to give Jesper Lindstrom enough encouragement to impress would start by playing him in a position that might suit him, Robert.I agree he's running out of time but that's because he doesn't look like he's got the confidence to run like a proper wideman? Kieran Kinsella 9 Posted 10/03/2025 at 21:04:14 Tony,Exactly. There was an article on ToffeeWeb pre season explaining he failed at Napoli as they used him as a winger versus a Number 10. And he we are using him as a winger all season. Robert Tressell 10 Posted 10/03/2025 at 21:07:15 Tony # 8. Lindstrom might be wrong place at the wrong time with the lower cost Alcaraz impressing in a position Lindstrom may prefer. In a way it highlights the sense of these try before you buy loans. No real harm done if it doesn't work out. You let them go and try something else.Plenty more fish in the sea. Tony Abrahams 11 Posted 10/03/2025 at 21:14:39 Can't argue with that, Robert, but imagine if he went to his next club and they played him inside and he excelled?Maybe he hisn't doing enough in training to warrant getting a game playing inside, but he definitely doesn't look like he's doing enough on the wing to warrant Everton, trying to sign him, imo.I'd still like to see him get a few games playing inside, but if this was going to be the case then I think it might have already happened by now? Dave Abrahams 12 Posted 10/03/2025 at 21:15:56 Robert (10), I'd say in both positions Alcaraz comes out on top for ability and strength plus he looks, although briefly, like he wants to succeed in the Premier League while it looks like it's too strenuous for Lindstrom. Liam Mogan 13 Posted 10/03/2025 at 21:40:41 Thanks for the tune, Mike 6. Great album that. Arguably Neil's best? Ian Bennett 14 Posted 10/03/2025 at 21:46:19 It's a struggle to see Lindstrom coming back. Ndiaye and Alcaraz look far better bets for number 10 next season, whilst I still think Doucoure will probably sign on reduced terms to provide cover.I'd hope a specialist right winger with goal and assists can be found. Seems an eternity since we had a good one. Si Cooper 15 Posted 11/03/2025 at 04:53:44 Playing right wing for this team would be too strenuous for even the likes of Salah!I don't think you can fault Lindstrom for his effort and if he is genuinely interested in a longer stay then I think he'd end up being significantly stronger with a tailored pre-season behind him.I'd still agree it doesn't really make sense if we are never going to use him anywhere else as you could probably find a more natural winger.Watching the game again and he's certainly doing his bit in terms of being very mobile up and down the right flank. 2 minutes into second half he found excellent space on the right as we broke but Doucoure inexplicably ignored / just didn't see a simple pass to play him in and the move fizzled out on the other side of the pitch. That must be so frustrating if the manager is calling for more from you in the attacking positions and he threw up his hands justifiably but he immediately shrugged it off and got back to playing his part until he was subbed off 15 minutes later. Bob Parrington 16 Posted 11/03/2025 at 06:31:34 Mike Corcoran take a bow. I'd never heard the track! Rather liked it😎 Robert Tressell 17 Posted 11/03/2025 at 07:21:10 Tony # 11. It wouldn't be huge surprise if Lindstrom ends up in Seville etc and does well. Doesn't mean he was ever going to come good for us - see Anthony now doing well for Betis. As Dave says, the Premier League looks a bit strenuous for him. I'd sooner spend the £18m on someone like Tom Fellows or another specialist winger. Danny O'Neill 18 Posted 11/03/2025 at 08:27:18 Lindstrom isn't a winger, but all fit, it's Alcaraz every day on the inside / supporting striker role. It is a squad game more than ever and we have lacked numbers past the first 14 for a few years now. The teams competing and challenging will have decent backup and depth in the squad. No player is going to play every game with suspensions and injuries, so to a degree, it is a numbers game, but balancing that without sacrificing quality.Good backup and squad player? I'd say yes, but do we want to spend that sort of money of backup? That's for the club to decide.Without Google, I have no idea who Tom Fellows is, by the way!!
