Column Striker Crisis So, how is it now, with all the advantages of offside changes, diving acceptance, no back passes etc, that this generation can’t seem to produce a goalscorer better than Rideout? Kieran Kinsella 29 August 2025 72comments (last) Presently, we have two strikers. One, Beto, is a rough diamond. Like Jermaine Beckford, he has some natural skill and athleticism but you can see he missed out on proper coaching at an early age. In his mid-20s, he lacks basic abilities a decent academy would have drilled into him. Then we have Barry. A weirdly English-style centre-forward who got his schooling in France, where the focus is generally more on the kind of exquisite talents he lacks. He may evolve into a Duncan Ferguson type, but as of now, his rawness is at the level of Oumar Niasse. But, while neither is match-ready if we want to do more than battle relegation, what are the other options? As a kid, everyone wanted to be a striker. We admired the likes of Gary Lineker and Andy Gray while looking enviously at other talents we never signed, like Bergkamp, Henry, and Aguero, among others. But what happened to the strikers? In this market, we see Mbuemo on the back of one decent season going for £60M. Gyökeres, with a Maupay-like season in the EFL and time in a subpar Portuguese league, going for £75M. Sesko, a less proven Timo Warner, going for the same. Wissa and Strand Larsen, limping past the 10-goal mark, are valued at £50M+. Honestly, I’d rather take a reincarnated 28-year-old Paul Rideout over any of these, even if the cost was the same. Yet we got him for £500k, a third of what we paid for Newcastle Utd left-back Neil McDonald years earlier. Rideout also played in the era before it was acceptable to dive if a player breathed near you. A time when yobs like Julian Dicks, Vinnie Jones, Mark Dennis and Dean Saunders could end your career and not even get carded. Back when offside laws favoured defenders. So, how is it now, with all the advantages of offside changes, diving acceptance, no back passes etc, that this generation can’t seem to produce a goalscorer better than Rideout? It’s a sad state of affairs but, if a poor man’s Rideout costs £75M, we need to suck it up and hope our midfielders score a hell of a lot of goals. Disclaimer () Phillip Warrington 1 Posted 29/08/2025 at 08:31:02 If we don't get in a decent striker in this transfer window, then I think it's time we say to some of the Under-21 strikers: "Okay, we are going to back you by starting you. If it doesn't work out, we will replace you with Beto or Barry." I would fail to see how they could do any worse. Pat Kelly 2 Posted 29/08/2025 at 11:37:28 Kieran, how could you forget Chermiti ? Thierry Henry thinks Chermiti is the bees knees. I suppose you excluded him because he's likely off on loan to Rangers. As if they weren't desperate enough. No doubt we can look forward to a new improved Chermiti next season. God help us. He'll be like a new signing. Kieran Kinsella 3 Posted 29/08/2025 at 16:12:45 PatHenry is a fan of his?? Ryan Holroyd 4 Posted 29/08/2025 at 16:18:29 How many full games of Chermiti have you seen Pat? Jake FitzGerald 5 Posted 29/08/2025 at 16:39:58 I think youre mistaking Chermiti for Barry as to who Thierry Henry is a big fan of. Martin Mulrooney 6 Posted 29/08/2025 at 16:46:40 I think Beto for all his weaknesses and they are obvious for all to see, is blessed with natural strengths that allow him to be a real handful if he applies himself. Its to early to right Barry off but at 22 and not far of turning 23, he isnt that young in football terms. I struggle to see things in him that makes me feel he is good enough to improve us going forward. He may do a job or may be at the level to have done a job he last 3-4 years but we are now striving to look upwardsAs a short to medium term option, I wouldnt mind a punt on Josh Sargent at Norwich. He seems to has good strength, good touch, decent in the air and a good finisher with either foot. Maybe lacks blistering pace to be a threat in behind but he offers something different to Beto, like chalk and cheese. Admittedly I know little of his possible value, contract length or hold any extensive knowledge on him to be confident about his impact but with rideout being mentioned and the dearth of options out there and inflated prices, if he was a reasonable price, he could of been worth a punt Raymond Fox 7 Posted 29/08/2025 at 16:49:23 I can find fault with the best, just ask my wife, but you get what you pay for usually.I think you are all being over critical, all three of them are decent without being top drawer, as Kieran mentions even below the very best strikers are fetching £50m to £75m.I've posted before saying what bit we have seen of Chermiti I thought that he will make a good player, Moyes doesn't seem that keen though. James Marshall 8 Posted 29/08/2025 at 16:53:42 Beto is Beto - he runs hard, is a handful but won't score more than about 8 goals a season, absolute tops 10. And that's in all competitions.I reckon you'll see roughly the same from Barry. He reminds me a bit of Teddy Sheringham in his link up play and I like the look of him. He has bags of ability and I think you'll see it as the season progresses. Will the above totals matter? Well I reckon Ndiaye will get us 10, Grealish possibly 8 or so as well and other midfielders will chip in.Do we need a 20 goal a season striker? It would be nice, but the reality is we spent around £30m on Barry for probably less than 10 goals. If you think we're now going to suddenly spend upwards of £60m on a 20 goals a season striker you're going to be sorely disappointed. A) We can't afford one. B) They won't come to Everton. C) There aren't that many of them around. Also, Chermiti will go out on loan so it's Beto and Barry all season I reckon. We need to temper our expectations here as well - the squad is undergoing a full rebuild and the beginnings of that are looking decent. Our main aim needs to be a mid table finish, then we build from there. Not being involved in a relegation fight is the low bar we should be aiming for and that's where my expectations lie - anything beyond that is a bonus. Sam Hoare 9 Posted 29/08/2025 at 16:53:59 One of the many quirks of Everton fans is that a large chunk seem to think that we are entitled to a striker who scores 15+ goals a season, even though only 5 strikers in the league managed it last year and four the year before. The last time we had a striker who could do it Lukaku was criticised by a significant portion on here for being lazy and not linking play enough. So we need a 15+ goal striker who also defends like a beast and racks up 10 assists per season? Easy!!There are also lots of fans who think we absolutely need 3 or even 4 front line strikers even though most other teams have no more than 2.I think people think if we have more strikers well get more goals? I suspect having a dynamic attacker right back to overlap Ndiaye/Dibling and put in more crosses or create space would be more likely to see us with more goals.Beto and Barry are fine. The former managed 8 goals last season with only 15 starts and the latter is a potential future star who needs time to develop. Between them they should manage 15-20 goals hopefully which is plenty so long as Ndiaye, Grealish, Dibling, KDH etc chip in too.Maybe we get a cheap freebie or loan to cover Chermitti but Im not convinced we need it. Ndiaye has played up too before and Dibling could play there in a pinch. Could also give Braiden Graham a shot, hes a very natural finisher. David Bromwell 10 Posted 29/08/2025 at 16:58:19 On Wednesday Barry was repeatedly asking to be given the ball early, but that seldom happened, and when Beto came on he struggled, as usual, to control quick passes to his feet. For the moment I would share game time between the two of them, in the hope that one of them would clearly show themselves to be the better player. Ryan Holroyd 11 Posted 29/08/2025 at 17:03:49 ‘ Its to early to right Barry ofWell….. yeah….. hes here 4 weeks 22 in a new country with new team mates with a new side being put together Fucking hell This thread makes me wanna cry already Colin Glassar 12 Posted 29/08/2025 at 17:07:59 Oh for the days of a gerd muller, Jimmy greaves, franny lee, Alan Clark, Robbie Keane, Bob Latchford, rush etc… all goal hangers, all goal scorers. Thanks to modern day managers, they are all extinct now. Kieran Kinsella 13 Posted 29/08/2025 at 17:34:18 ColinThe weird thing is that Carlo got DCL to be a goal hanger for a year and low and behold he scored a lot of goals. But then we had to revert to having him run down channels aimlessly, or have the ball blasted towards his head to create knock downs for the invisible man. He isn't a good finisher but goal hanging can yield results. Maybe we should try it again with Beto. Dale Self 14 Posted 29/08/2025 at 17:37:24 Good point. With Richy, we had a reliable way to get the ball around the box. We have that doubly with Jack and Ilie. Mike Gaynes 15 Posted 29/08/2025 at 17:54:51 Pat #2, it was Barry that Henry complimented. The one with the baseless optimism about Chermiti is me. James #8, say what about Beto? "...won't score more than about 8 goals a season, absolute tops 10. And that's in all competitions."He scored 10 in all comps last season, playing just over half the available minutes due to being second fiddle to DCL. Kevin Molloy 16 Posted 29/08/2025 at 18:35:43 I think we're expecting way too much from Barry. This is a club that. once went a whole season where it's star signing (Beattie) did not score from open play. 'He also contributed nothing to general play. I disagree that Barry is raw like Niasse. I think he's an intelligent forward. who knows where to be, and how to pass. He. is also a quick learner. the one talent he manifestly does not have is the art of finishing he will get us 8-11 goals this season, which is fine for a first year. He also has elite strengths. He's very tall very fast very strong. I think in two years he will be very highly regarded. much better than DCL. Rob Hooton 17 Posted 29/08/2025 at 19:02:31 I really dont see us having a striker crisis! Weve rebuilt half of the squad in many of the most important areas, theres no way we can currently afford anything better than what we have. Barry looks promising and we know Beto can do well if given decent service. I think well be ok this season and can wait until next summer to look on improving the striker situation, hopefully with European football in the bag.Still have no idea about Chermiti, not seen much of him in his cameo appearances. Paul Hewitt 18 Posted 29/08/2025 at 19:04:10 Vardy for a season. Think he'd do quite well with this squad. Pat Kelly 19 Posted 29/08/2025 at 19:06:53 Mike, I'm even less enamoured of Chermiti now I realise Henry didn't compliment him. I doubt he'll be back at Everton. To me, Barry doesn't look the part. He may improve but it's not easy in the PL. I guess we'll find out this season because the only competition he'll have is Beto. Pat Kelly 20 Posted 29/08/2025 at 19:09:57 Ryan #4, Moyes has seen more of him than I have and he puts him behind Beto and Barry. Raymond Fox 21 Posted 29/08/2025 at 19:11:23 Barry is 6'5" and Beto 6'4" not many players that height are the best with the ball at their feet.Their strengths should be with high balls, I am not saying thats the case but it could be worth trying more.Thats what would have happened in the good old days, certainly more than you see now. Ian Bennett 22 Posted 29/08/2025 at 19:28:02 Barry only needs to out score Dcl by 3 goals vs last season to make an improvement. And the guys supporting him are now Grealish, Dewesbury Hall, Alcaraz, Dibbling and Ndiaye vs Harrison, Doucoure, Lindstrom and Ndiaye.I am seeing improvement, so panicking when both strikers have either scored or contributed into goals is just way to premature. Barry Williams 23 Posted 29/08/2025 at 19:36:46 Rob Hooton - 17I am with you on this Rob. I cannot understand this idea that we have a striker crisis.Right - Beto - he literally had half a season last year, when Moyes came in, and then had a decent strike rate. Barry, how the hell anyone can make a judgement on him as a goalscorer after less than 1 top flight game is baffling to me. Lets give them time with a supply line that is now better than it has been for a long long time then we can judge. What is it with instantaneous results with everyone. Also, people calling for Vardy - which I am not 100% against. Would he do a better job now upfront than either Alcaraz or Ndiaye. My belief is no, so for me - no striker crisis. We are in abetter shape than for a long long time - lets see what enfolds before getting all negative. Paul Hewitt 24 Posted 29/08/2025 at 19:42:48 Drogba in his first season at Chelsea didn't look good. Once he got used to the league, he didn't turn out to bad. Christy Ring 25 Posted 29/08/2025 at 19:52:58 I'm hoping Barry can score his first goal, it would be a huge boost, and give him confidence, he has a great first touch, but for a tall man, hasn't shown his physical presence. I still think both of our strikers are not as good as DCL, just my opinion. Colin Glassar 26 Posted 29/08/2025 at 19:55:48 Moyes says he wants to strengthen the defence so I cant see any forwards coming in.I agree, Christy. DCL is better than both our current forwards but I do see potential in Barry. Ian Bennett 27 Posted 29/08/2025 at 20:03:15 THREE GOALS SCORED LAST SEASON. How is that better? No point in driving 400 yards, and taking 20 goes with the putter.Beto and Barry need to score 14 goals, and they beat the tally last year set by DCL and Beto. There hold up play could be better, but I firmly believe that tally will be broken. Martin Mulrooney 28 Posted 29/08/2025 at 20:36:19 Its professional sports, not every player gets the time needed to settle in. Professional sport is unforgiving. A couple of games come to soon and the player fails to produce and a couple of performances the manager isn't to pleased with and suddenly your out the team and you watch your replacement perform well enough to keep the shirt for months. Suddenly its nearing the summer and you have been in and out of the team without any real run of games or making a significant impact and part 2 of the rebuild is upon us and this time the major investment goes into a proven forward and suddenly your chief support role going forward or deemed surplus to requirements. Or they burst into life and prove to be the best signing for years, who knows. But most supporters will develop first opinions/impressions after watching new players and form initial opinions if they feel the player appears to be an improvement of what we had before or good enough to push us on to the next level (to be honest, most people do about most things in life its a natural thing to do. First couple weeks at a new job, first time meeting work colleagues or whatever) and as long as they remain open to being proved right or wrong and fair in regards to giving critique and some acknowledgment of a period of adjustment for the player before deciding a final opinion if a player isnt good enough, I see no wrong in anything posted above. I didnt need 6 months and 10 games to feel the straq wasnt good enough, nor mikel madar, niasse, lindstrom, Ellis Simms, Rondon, Tosun, Sandro or many others. I would have been happy for any and all of them to have proved me wrong, like others have done after my initial opinion wasnt one of confidence during their first few months. If that makes anyone cry, the world is soft these days anyway… Eugene Ruane 29 Posted 29/08/2025 at 20:52:27 Monday, 6pm, Vardy too be announced on a one-year deal - taps nose.- comedy pause -Taps nose because there's Gregg's sausage roll crumbs on it, not because I've heard anything.Link Ian Bennett 30 Posted 29/08/2025 at 21:58:44 Here are some stats on mo salah last season. He is an elite striker, but like haaland can often be in the periphery. His highlights are wonderful, but watch the game live and hes out the game for ages.Appearances 38Goals 29Assists 18Penalties 9Touches in box 394Shots total 130Shots on target 61So an elite striker, exclude the pens1 in 2 goals to games1 in 2 assists to gamesConverts 1 in 3 Shots on target10 touches in the box per gameScores one in 6.5 Shots3.4 Shots per gameThese contributions are clinical, but not massive in total. 10 touches in the box doesnt sound a lot, nor is 3.4 Shots per game when youve walked the league. My criticism of dcls hold up plsy, although it did deteriorate, as did his committment to use his pace to truly hurt the opposition. But his ability to actually cut out a chance and beat the keeper is where it hurt. So, can Beto or Barry get 10 touches per game in the box? Can they take 3 to 4 Shots a match, scoring 1 in 7 taken? They both have the pace, size, and creativity behind them to score a enough to keep us in a healthy enough position.Patience is needed. Denver Daniels 31 Posted 29/08/2025 at 22:12:24 Beto has shown that if you get him into a situation where he can run at the defender he can create his own chances. He's deceptively quick and can bully defenders. Converting those chances is another story. Neither of these 2 are a patch on DCL in terms of hold up play. Can't really comment on Barry as I've not seen enough. He certainly didn't set the world alight in his first start. James Marshall 32 Posted 29/08/2025 at 22:56:44 Beto is only effective when there's space in behind for him to run into - when the ball is played up to him or played to feet he's rubbish.Barry's link play is better, which is why you're likely to see more of Barry early in games, and Beto later on if & when defences push up. Teams who play a high line = Beto, everyone else = Barry.I suspect with Ndiaye, KDH, Garner, Dibling and Grealish in the team we'll create more so Barry will play more because he can play the ball with the other ball players in our team.Beto's link play is terrible. He can only run in behind. They're both big tall blokes but their strengths are quite different. Ryan Holroyd 33 Posted 29/08/2025 at 23:16:39 ‘ To me, Barry doesn't look the partBased on what Pat? Ryan Holroyd 34 Posted 29/08/2025 at 23:23:53 Calvert Lewin underperformed his xg by around 10 last season. Hes absolutely shite at finishing, check out his effort in midweek. To make a judgement on Barry after less than 3 games is ridiculous imo. Henry was praising him on Monday and I think I will take his opinion over ‘supporters on here Ryan Holroyd 35 Posted 29/08/2025 at 23:30:37 Someone doesnt think Barry has the attributes to improve us and then suggests Josh Sargent as a possible signing. Absolutely hilarious Liam Mogan 36 Posted 29/08/2025 at 23:38:32 That Barry. I've seen him play about 140 competitive minutes. He's shite lad. 🙄 Don Alexander 37 Posted 29/08/2025 at 23:42:47 As others have said, I don't worry too much this season, now, on account of us having an unproven strike force. Lineker and Cottee were the last two revered strikers we signed and whilst they were with us we won nowt. In the Premier League we've signed (fading) so-called goal machines who only went on to display their declining talent. Rooney is the only goal-scorer of note we've developed from scratch (with due acknowledgement to Joey!...... when I were a lad), so I hope the three under discussion, with the better calibre of player now around them, can go on to a level where clubs such as Forest, Villa and Newcastle want to buy them to bolster their own European campaigns, thereby giving us more cash to spend on strikers already used to regularly playing in Europe. It may take years after the miasma more than thirty inflicted on us but let's try to not immediately take our anguish out on those aspirants undeserving of it, namely, the present squad. Ben King 38 Posted 29/08/2025 at 23:52:37 Don#37Lukaku was absolutely brilliant for us and if hed stayed then no chance wed have been anywhere near relegation positions. Bizarre that youve omitted him. Similarly the Yak was brilliant for us prior to his big injury and post injury did a super job at BlackburnSaha was excellent albeit past his best as was EtoThink you need some history lessons lad!!! Mark Taylor 39 Posted 30/08/2025 at 00:48:26 I think others have said it, but if you offer little on the flanks because you don't have attacking full backs, don't expect many goals from your striker. DCL got his one season hatful because we had strength on the flanks, esp the left.Hence we need an attacking LB, which Myko isn't, as well as the more obvious need at RB where we have no specialist RB at all. To me, these are now the most challenging positions on the pitch, you have to get up and down the line, rotating which FB pushes.True, none of our strikers are exceptional, maybe not even good, but the market for near guaranteed regular goal scorers is not one we can operate in right now. We'll have to make the best of what we have. Phil Sammon 40 Posted 30/08/2025 at 01:22:43 I didnt really like the way Moyes spoke about Barry in the presser. Basically said we dont have the money to buy a top striker so we have had to look for other options. I know its true…but it would have been nice to hear him speak positively on Barrys potential, rather that telling everyone what he isnt. Sam Hoare 41 Posted 30/08/2025 at 07:25:05 Ian, is Salah a striker though? Id say he is a winger, albeit one who has license to stay further forward and cut in frequently to good effect.Everton need more goals but some of them need to come from our wingers. Ndiaye did well last season but could get even more and Grealish and Dibling will need to contribute too. James Marshall 42 Posted 30/08/2025 at 07:50:23 Salah is technically a midfielder. We don't have a striker crisis. There's goals in this team already. Don't worry about it. Martin Mulrooney 43 Posted 30/08/2025 at 07:55:28 Some people think Barry has only played 140 competitive minutes his whole life Its a big world, there is a thing called the internet with a plethora of content on to watch at your leisure, there are sites with in depth background write ups and records that detail his career so far. Barry wasnt born 4 weeks ago ffs. Maybe to some if it isnt in an Everton shirt, it doesnt existThe Sargent mention was a throwaway suggestion as a 3rd option in the squad with Chermiti leaving last minute, as I doubt we have funds to make an improvement now, in the spirit of the main post about Rideout in the 90s. Someone who appears to offer differing attributes to what we currently haveSensitive souls Colin Glassar 44 Posted 30/08/2025 at 08:18:29 Phil 40, Dour Dave is not known for his warm, bubbly personality. Hes a Church of Scotland, Calvinist. A Pat on the back, or a word of praise, is considered sinful 😉 Tommy Carter 45 Posted 30/08/2025 at 08:33:14 @43 MartinI wouldnt apologise over suggesting Josh Sargent. I have also pointed to him as a potential signing for a long time. He is certainly at this moment in time better than anything we have got and would deliver the kind of forward play that Moyes likes. Hes relentlessly hard working with good physical attributes and can get hold of the ball and keep it. Hes not top class or a marquee signing kind of player. But he would be a reliable performer. The team however is desperate for pace. We have no pace at all in the entire team, in any position. Martin Mulrooney 46 Posted 30/08/2025 at 08:50:15 I agree Tommy, I dont know much about his potential cost or contract length ect but as I first said, short to medium term I think he possibly could prove useful and offer something different to Beto and Barry. Maybe some peoples small doubts about Barry prove to have no relevance, as he turns out to be a success for years to come.I havent seen many posts, if any at all, that have completely written him off or declared him well and truly shite, just some have expressed to having some doubts about what he may offer, even when settled. We do lack blistering pace, even from our wide players who all seem to prefer the ball to feet and to stand up defenders before going past them. Unless receiving it on the half turn and they can instantly roll their man. It is still a area that is much improved compared to last season It is definitely a chink in our armour, the lack of a threat in behind the fullbacks or down the inside of them. Something that Beto seems to at least have as a strength when we break quickly. James Marshall 47 Posted 30/08/2025 at 08:58:33 Regarding the last two posts on here 45/46.If you Google 'Thierno Barry strengths', one of the main things he's known for is his pace, power, strength, the list goes on, so quite where you both get this notion from is somewhat perplexing.Beto is also quick, and over a short distance so is Ndiaye. KDH is no slouch either.I think this is fan perception, and not actual reality. There's way more to come from Barry - people need to be a bit more forgiving before jumping on the 'striker crisis' bandwagon. There really isn't one.As Thierry Henry said, "he's a player that people doubt in the beginning, but end up liking".Give it time. Mike Allison 48 Posted 30/08/2025 at 09:06:40 I think if we bought Josh Sargent then people would start to appreciate that Beto and Barry are actually decent. We havent provided strikers with any kind of service since Carlo Ancelotti was in charge. This season we look like we might be able to. Lets hope.Another key point about strikers in general is just the way the game has changed; most chances seem to fall to the wingers and midfielders with the out and out strikers well marshalled playing up against 2 centre backs (or sometimes 3). Their role is more tactical which is why coaches see things in them that we sometimes dont. In the days of Lineker and Rideout they generally played as a 2 up against 2 centre backs and werent outnumbered. Kieran mentioned Bergkamp and Henry, two exceptional footballers, but Bergkamp wasnt a striker. He played behind another player, usually Henry (who also didnt like to play up against 2 centre backs and often pulled wide to the left). Bergkamp joined Arsenal in part because hed had such a torrid time trying to play as a ‘9 at Inter Milan in a narrow formation and couldnt do it.If you provide service, even for average strikers, they score goals. However, things have flipped a little, and ‘number 9s are now expected to make runs and occupy defenders in a way that creates space and chances for the deeper players. Colin Glassar 49 Posted 30/08/2025 at 09:09:49 James 47, add to that list, Dibling. Hes quick as well. Id rather have a Grealish than a headless chicken like Armando Traore. Robert Tressell 50 Posted 30/08/2025 at 09:16:22 Do we have an outstanding striker? No.Can we afford a ready made one? No.Does it make sense to buy another really mediocre one? No. Does it make sense to develop Barry and hope he turns into a 20 goal striker? Yes. Will that take time? Yes. Ian Bennett 51 Posted 30/08/2025 at 09:17:26 Sam, not really the point. My point is that even the elite forwards like Salah & Haaland arent massively involved in the build up play.Theyre judged exclusively on putting the ball in the net.Beto and Barry are getting criticism for their weak hold up play, which for Barry is a bit of a joke, as he played his part in 2 goals vs Brighton.Beto & Barry need to be judged after 20 games minimum, and for Barry probably the season. That assessment will be goals. Quite frankly, I couldn't give a monkeys if his hold up play is like a curb. If he puts in 15 goal plus each we will all be doing cartwheels. Lukuku was loved by Everton, but a hold up centre forward was never his strength. It was running through face to goal.A bashing after 3 games (of which the leeds side was cobbled together), is frankly piss poor from a fan base that should know better. On the striker front, my main criticism is from a squad point of view that Barry, beto and Chermiti are very similar in style. Which probably rules them out in playing as a pair, as they make the same movements. A link forward is needed as a different option, but there isn't many about these days.Josh Sargent is not good enough for the Premier league. Sorry, he just isn't. Tommy Carter 52 Posted 30/08/2025 at 09:38:49 @47 JamesRather than relying on Google, I have used his performances so far in an Everton shirt to inform my opinion. Particularly against Brighton in the flesh last week. If he is quicker than my assessment of him then he certainly doesnt play in any kind of way that seeks to capitalise on that ‘strength. All I saw was a player looking to come towards the play rather than make runs away from it. When I say we need pace, we need pace in a way that stretches the play and the pitch. We need players running towards the goal not constantly coming to feet. But this is how Moyes has always played. His teams stay as a tight square unit and move together up the pitch when trying to develop an attack. Thats why his teams tend to have a goal threat, because there tends to always be numbers going forward on the occasions that an attack is formed. It its also why hell never get too results against top teams (mainly away from home) because these kind of teams can usually defend the way a Moyes team attacks. Laurie Hartley 53 Posted 30/08/2025 at 09:39:23 Sam # 9 - “Beto and Barry are fine. The former managed 8 goals last season with only 15 starts”That is the elephant in this room. If you interpolate those numbers Beto is capable of 16 goals in 30 starts.Plus he missed quite a few one on ones - which with my glass half full means he is a threat in the oppositions half.I think a lot of us just dont like him. I would start him every game. Tommy Carter 54 Posted 30/08/2025 at 09:47:23 @53 LaurieI think he is a threat Laurie. And he does have goals in him. But he gives the team absolutely nothing else. And that will always be a problem for Moyes and how he wishes to play. Moyes doesnt like goalscorers. He likes defensive forwards who hold the ball up well Jake FitzGerald 55 Posted 30/08/2025 at 09:57:17 Yes, Tommy, Moyes absolutely despises goalscorers. That Jarrod Bowen is shite, isnt he? Always mooching around looking to get the ball with his back to the goal then doing nothing with it. All Moyess fault, that. Mike Allison 56 Posted 30/08/2025 at 10:02:31 Ian, 51, I agree with almost all of what youve said. However, I propose that when you say: “That assessment will be goals” that doesnt mean individual goals but team goals. Of course, I hope that Beto and Barry score plenty, but if they make runs and offer threat in a way that means Grealish, Alcaraz, Dewsbury-Hall, NDiaye, McNeil and Dibling are all scoring then I would say that they doing their job even if theyre being outscored by deeper players. James Marshall 57 Posted 30/08/2025 at 10:30:33 Tommy@52I'm not relying on Google, I watch the same games you do and I just don't see what you're seeing.Barry looks sharp, quick on the turn, quick off the mark, with a great touch and excellent link play. The Google point is merely to illustrate what he's known for before he joined Everton. Namely, the things you (and others) claim he's not based on his very short time playing for us.It's a bit like a scout going to watch one game and forming an opinion on a player - I just think people need to let him play over a number of months to have formed an opinion on him that holds any weight - everything else is just knee-jerk. Robert Tressell 58 Posted 30/08/2025 at 10:35:02 Is Beto a high quality striker? No.Can Beto score 10 to 15 across a 38 game season? Yes.Are our strikers the weak link in the team? No.Are our strikers good enough for a sniff of Europe or a cup? Yes.Are our strikers good enough for a shot at the Champions League places. No.Is Barry a high quality striker? No.Is Barry better than Beto now? Hard to say. Could Barry become better than Beto? Probably - but it will take time and he needs games.Could Barry become a high quality striker? Complete unknown. How do we get ourselves a high quality striker? Option 1. Spend £70m to £130m on a strikerOption 2. Buy in high quality potential and develop the player (and probably buy in decent volume too). Phil (Kelsall) Roberts 59 Posted 30/08/2025 at 11:59:34 In the 21 games Moyes has been in charge, we scored 10 more goals than these games under Dyche (OK so that does not say a lot).Do it again and that is 50+ goals a season which is top half except CL teams and Brighton/Brentford.We are also 15 goals lower in our own net and for the first time since Carlo left, we are showing a positive goal difference over 38 games.Personally, I don't care if Beto and Barry don't score all season as long as they contribute to the team scoring >50 goals and a positive Goal Difference. Les Callan 60 Posted 30/08/2025 at 12:17:39 Jeez James @57. Youve been watching a different Barry than I have. Tommy Carter 61 Posted 30/08/2025 at 12:26:54 @57 JamesMy prediction based on what I have seen so far is that Thierno Barry will not score any more than 5 league goals this season. I am entitled to my opinion despite the fact you find it unpalatable. I hope he proves me wrong. But it is what it is. Im an optimist but I wont pretend that I think there is a top class player there. Judging by the comments from Moyes, he doesnt even think so either. And as for your sarcasm Jake (55). Bowen is an all round brilliant player whose pressing and industriousness classify him as much more than a goal scorer. Hes a wonderful player. Jake FitzGerald 62 Posted 30/08/2025 at 12:29:37 Yes, Tommy. Bought, nurtured and given licence to do what he does best by….David Moyes. Laurie Hartley 63 Posted 30/08/2025 at 12:41:08 Robert # 58 - “How do we get ourselves a high quality striker?” - I think your on the right track with your answers. Option 1 - Throw money at it - we wont have that kind of money to spend for a season or two.Option 2 - buy potential - perhaps Barry & Chermeti are the star of that approach.in the meantime I would do with Beto what Carlo did with DCL - play to his strengths. We have several midfielders now who can pick a pass. Raymond Fox 64 Posted 30/08/2025 at 12:44:37 We didn't buy Beto and Barry as world beaters, if they were they would have cost 2 or 3 times as much.Beto did well last season when he was getting game time and balls to run on to.A striker for your Arsenal, Reds, Chelsea should score more goals because they will most likely get more chances.I said earlier Barry is 6'5" and Beto is 6'4" you can expect them to be less nippy off the mark than a smaller striker.Their advantage should be using their weight and height around the box, but to do that they need some balls in the air. Robert Tressell 65 Posted 30/08/2025 at 12:51:42 The fact that Newcastle have just spent €85m on Woltemade shows how hard it is to find a striker. Hes talented - and had a good season in a well assembled Stuttgart side last season. But season before that 2 goals in 30 games. The £27m we paid for Barry is remarkably cheap. Tommy #61, I think about 5 goals from Barry might end up being about right. But thats on the basis Beto will start more and probably get about 12 goals. 5 goals from a sub striker is a massive upgrade on recent years and could make a big difference. By the end of the season Barry might have forced his way into the starting line up more regularly. Between Barry and Beto I expect about 15 to 20 goals. Peter Moore 66 Posted 30/08/2025 at 12:52:41 Since Moyes returned Beto's minutes to goals ratio is right up there in terms of star strikers in the Premier League!A clumsy ugly duckling of a player? Yes. A goal scoring predator? Also Yes!He needs the ball played in front of him though ideally. Back to goal isn't his forte. He is a wrecking ball to defenses who can finish plenty when given the right service. With the quality of attacking midfield now significantly upgraded, hopefully it won't be long before the strikers start banging them in. UTFT. Sean Mitchell 67 Posted 30/08/2025 at 13:03:23 No striker crisis. Barry is adapting and will get better. Beto can always improve with the new players around. A third strike would be nice, tho. To say Barry isnt the answer is ridiculous after 4 weeks being here. Shall we bring Ramirez or the French 1 goal wonder? Yeah, I thought not. No crisis. Coyb Ian Bennett 68 Posted 30/08/2025 at 13:06:34 Id agree Mike, but there would always be the - wed be a better team if the lads up front could score X more. And if they didnt, the manager/fans would be looking for somebody that could.Kendall did it with Lineker I guess. Sharp, Heath, Gray was perfectly functional, but even Howard went for the goals. Tommy Carter 69 Posted 30/08/2025 at 13:08:52 @ Ian. Yes because Kendall recognised that the difference at the very top is having a prolific striker. In a big game there were not many better than Lineker Robert Tressell 70 Posted 30/08/2025 at 13:14:52 I am pretty sure David Moyes has also noticed that successful teams often have a high quality striker. That is because it is stark staringly obvious. We were in for Woltemade but he's been sold for €85M.We were in for Delap but, sadly, he just chose a much better option for winning things and progressing his career. We bought a cheap striker to develop instead because we don't have a lot of money. Ajay Gopal 71 Posted 30/08/2025 at 13:24:13 Some weird comments by Moyes in his press conference yesterday. When asked if he thought his strikers are scoring enough goals, he said No. Fair enough, but then he started rambling on about how Everton spent only 28 million on a striker, whereas other teams have spent 65-70 million and Everton dont have that kind of money. While that may be the truth, I dont think it motivates Beto and Barry to give their best. If their manager himself thinks they are not good enough, why would they? Raymond Fox 72 Posted 30/08/2025 at 13:54:29 Apart from the centre forward position, I think its certain that we are going to get many more goals from other players in our side from now on.
