Everton 3 - 0 Doncaster
Iliman Ndiaye opened his goalscoring account for Everton and Tim Iroegbunam looks likely to have his first for the Club awarded to Dwight McNeil as Sean Dyche’s men booked their place in the Carabao Cup Third Round with a 3-0 win over Doncaster Rovers at Goodison Park.
After a goalless first half that saw the returning James Garner smack the post with a side-foot effort in stoppage time, Iroegbunam broke the deadlock with a crisp low drive that clipped McNeil on its way through to goal past Ian Lawlor before a terrific effort from Ndiaye effectively made the game safe.
Beto rounded off the scoring with a late third as the Toffees completed the first leg of a two-game sequence at home that supporters hope can provide the spark to kickstart the team’s season after miserable back-to-back defeats to start the Premier League campaign.
As expected, Dyche made a number of changes to his starting XI and he finally handed Ndiaye, Jesper Lindstrøm and Jake O’Brien their full debuts while there were surprise returns from injury for Seamus Coleman and James Garner.
As expected, the hosts were on the front foot early but looked unconvincing going forward despite McNeil finding Beto in the six-yard box during a promising opening where the striker couldn’t convert.
However, Everton grew into their task and started moving the ball around well, Ndiaye laying it off to McNeil whose shot was deflected wide after 12 minutes while the roving winger saw a similar effort meet the same fate on the half-hour mark.
In between, Doncaster had been holding their own and after Jack Senior had forced Jordan Pickford to palm his curling shot behind, Luke Molineux spurned a decent chance by firing straight at the goalkeeper.
Then, after Beto had failed to meet a whipped Garner cross from the right, Everton finished the half strongly by twice going close. First Garner’s side-foot effort was deflected over and then, from the resulting corner and Michael Keane’s header back from the byline, the midfielder guided a second salvo past a forest of players and off the woodwork.
The much-needed breakthrough came eight minutes after the restart, though when Lindstrøm worked his way into the Doncaster box and delayed before cutting it back towards the penalty spot where Iroegbunam arrived to meet it with a first-time strike. McNeil claimed it and he was awarded it by the stadium announcer, Simon Ross, but it remains to be seen whether he will officially be credited for it.
Garner swept wide when decently placed, Ndiaye had a shot charged down for another corner and Beto missed with a header when the latter served a peach of a cross on a proverbial platter for the Portuguese before Pickford was called into action again to deny Kyle Hurst with 20 minutes to go.
A minute after that, however, Ndiaye lit up the contest with a wonderfully-taken goal that underlined supporter frustration with Dyche for withholding the Senegalese from the starting line-up for the first two Premier League fixtures.
With great feet, he easily turned Jamie Sterry and feinted his way past Joseph Olowu before drilling a left-footer past Lawlor to make it 2-0.
The Rovers keeper had to tip McNeil’s raking strike over the bar shortly afterwards but after substitute Jack Harrison had blazed over with his weaker foot, Beto completed the scoring.
Laying the ball off to McNeil, the striker continued his run into the box as the former picked out Vitalii Mykolenko on the overlap and the Ukrainian found Beto who touched it past the last defender before prodding home with the outside of his boot.
Though the opposition were demonstrably inferior, and the scoreline reflected the gulf in stature of the two clubs, this was nonetheless the result that Everton badly needed.
Inman Ndiaye in particular staked a strong claim for inclusion in the starting XI against Bournemouth on Saturday while O’Brien played with Branthwaite-esque calm and Lindstrom’s assist for the second goal demonstrated what he can bring to the table on the right flank as an alternative to Harrison.
Most importantly, breaking the duck for the season with three goals will, hopefully, inject the requisite confidence into the team's collective vein ahead of an important Premier league fixture at the weekend.

Ndiaye looks sharp. Hope this is the turn of things.

That is what is so frustrating about Dyche, an improved performance by many, and some showing they deserve to be in the team, most probably replaced by the' Young Pretender and the dastardly Duke '.
Apart from Harrison Armstrong's introduction (too late again), the timing of the subs was better. Tim Iroegbunam is getting better and better each game, what a bargain, better than Onana in my opinion, long may that continue.

According to the commentary on Sky, we have won the last 16 or 17 at the Second Round in this cup, last time we lost being under Walter Smith.
Why do we doubt ourselves at this stage?

Great to see Seamus can still be a bit part of the team, but what the hell was Young doing back, for fuck's sake...?
Bournemouth will be a truer test, but we all saw the improvements playing the young guys, hope Sean saw enough to convince him too.

Overall labouring it is, is probably a fair summary. What we genuinely lack is getting bodies forward quickly and play too many long balls.
The obsession with Pickford and defenders launching it, is killing us. We are just leaving Beto isolated, as he has no one around him and we just give up possession with no real chances created.
It was improvement, but the quality of opposition was poor, and it does point to a season of struggle.
The midfield two of Garner and Iroegbunam put a bit more pace and technical ability into the midfield for the first time, in a long time. I wanted to see them on the ball more, than long ball nonsense.
Ndiaye and Lindstrom showed some improvement, and grew into the game. Like Obrien, none suggested they're immediate world beaters, but hopefully steady improvement can be seen if the manager shows faith.
The positive for me was seeing McNeil in the Number 10 role. I am his hardest critic, as I think he offers nothing out wide. No trick, no goals, no pace. You just can't have that in a position that should be getting 20 plus goal involvements a season.
However, he does off something as a No 10. He can strike a ball, and travels quicker with it centrally than running it seems. I would play Ndiaye or Harrison left, and Lindstrøm right, with McNeil ahead of Doucouré at. Doucouré has been an important source if goals till his injury, but has offered little for 9 months.
And the Ashley Young… Sorry, pal, you're done. Came on for an immediate yellow card, and was then moved to wide right to avoid another red card. Offered nothing. He's got to be binned off, he's a complete liability that is being targeted by opposition. Red cards, yellow cards, penalties and errors is all he offers now. Get rid.

If Calvert-Lewin ain't signing a contract, then we deffo should be giving him a run. Priority to the players who are committed, in my opinion, and a clear message to those who aren't.
11 Posted 28/08/2024 at 08:48:48
The test will come when he hits a sticky patch - will he have the mental strength at such a young age to keep playing confident football? Anyway, for now, he's a revelation.
Seamus returning was a massive boost to our defence. He's still, by some distance, our first choice and best right-back. Dixon looks more likely than Patterson to be next in line to his throne, and he can only benefit by having Seamus there to teach him.
12 Posted 28/08/2024 at 08:53:30
The fact that he has just been signed for the season makes it difficult. I doubt you can get rid of him without it costing. Therefore, as he is a liability, he should only be let on the pitch in an emergency rather than the regular berth he has been getting.
Apart from that, they performed okay in the second half. Playing okay against League Two opposition is one thing, Bouremouth is another, however, and 3 points are essential on Saturday. Dyche must think very carefully how he juggles the pack for that one.

A mention for the much maligned Michael Keane who won every header, every tackle and made good forward passes. A fine performance!
14 Posted 28/08/2024 at 10:07:56
I have been saying for many many months either pick McNeil in the no 10 role or don't play him at all. Out wide he has no pace so never takes on his fullback and usually he plays the ball back to Mykolenko, but played more central he has more room and can go past people and has a good shot.
James Garner looked way off the pace but obviously needs games and last night was the perfect opportunity to get some game time. Ndiaye looked quiet in the first half but another who came alive in the 2nd half and scored a very well worked goal. Although I said earlier McNeil is undoubtedly better in the No 10 role, I also think that's were Ndaiye would flourish most. I was pleased Beto scored; he may lack quality in certain areas of his game, but nobody can question his work rate. But like Calvert-Lewin, while Dyche plays a system were neither get much support, it must be the most thankless task in the Premier League to play up top at Everton on your own. I thought young Harrison looked good when he came on, as did Dixon. I thought it really hilarious and highlighted Dyche's poor tactical quality, when Dixon came on, Young was gesturing to the bench "Where do you want me to play?" And when a corner for Doncaster quickly followed, Young looked at the Park end with arms outstretched as if to ask them where did he think he should be playing. But important that we won the game and scored a few and as importantly didn't concede. But as I said at the beginning, this was a League Two side, but we will have gained confidence from this win. Now it will be interesting to see what team Dyche picks for the Bournemouth game.

I absolutely agree that Keane was excellent last night as did Jake O'Brien, and I would be quite happy to see them both start on Saturday alongside Seamus and Mykolenko.

Thanks to you guys and gals, I have some understanding of the team and its performance. Following on from the Spurs game, in which I thought Sean Dyche was somewhat chicken in his starting eleven choice but for Dixon (who I thought acquitted himself really well), with Ndiaye and Lindstrøm, in particular, I feel some quiet excitement for what we can achieve… subject to Dyche having the balls to use the young and new guys.
17 Posted 28/08/2024 at 11:31:40
The centre-backs did well and may well be left unchanged for Bournemouth, but we all know Doucoure, Gana and Calvert-Lewin will be back in the starting line-up. Unless we lose one of them beforehand.
18 Posted 28/08/2024 at 11:54:58
But the bigger issue is he is all left foot — that means he basically has the turning circle of a supertanker.
19 Posted 28/08/2024 at 12:44:49
I'm hoping he sees the improvement in Ndiaye on the left, Lindstrøm right and McNeil down the middle brings.
I'd also like to see Garner and Iroegbunam together. The likes of Gana and Doucouré can be brought on to consolidate and O'Brien in for Keane.
Na... what am I talking about, it'll be the same team as Spurs.
20 Posted 28/08/2024 at 15:04:23
Great to see Coleman and Garner back finding fitness.
A first look at O'Brien who looks quite quick and dare I say it a bit like Michael Keane in stature?
Lindstrøm looked pretty average and hobbled off making him a doubt for the bench on Saturday.
Ndiaye took his chance and deserves a spot in the team on Saturday.
A real shame Chermiti got injured pre-season as Beto is proving to be more of a lump with every game, how did he miss that header.
Doucoure getting criticised again and he never even played!
Roll on Saturday.
21 Posted 28/08/2024 at 15:16:29
"It's only Everton — 3 points in the bag before a ball is kicked?
It's a mishmash of a team that don't seem to be able to gel probably because of injuries and new players coming in?
Give the new lads a good run to get use to each other and gel — those favourites of Dyche don't perform as they should but seem to get a free pass.
22 Posted 28/08/2024 at 15:18:46
Harrison and Doucoure were awful in the first two games and weren't subbed early enough. Ndiaye and Garner have to play in a 4-3-3, we were cut open with just Gueye and Iroegbunam in midfield, and it'll give us a more offensive team.
I desperately hope Calvert-Lewin is still here on Saturday. I like Beto as a person, but there's no way we can cope this season if he's our No 1 striker.
23 Posted 28/08/2024 at 15:47:01
But if only one with Tim, it has to be Gana as Garner was way off the pace last night. Particularly first half when he was awful.
24 Posted 28/08/2024 at 16:19:08
But I had it on the car radio on the hour for the journey home from Kent and the commentators were praising James Garner. He certainly sounded involved but I only caught the last 15 minutes of the first half.
Apart from him they picked out Iroegbunam, O'Brien and Ndiaye as making a positive difference and gave Beto some praise for his strength and perseverance.
They couldn't understand why Young gets a game either though.
25 Posted 28/08/2024 at 16:23:25
I suspect that many of us would agree Seamus at right-back. Ndiaye for Doucoure are essential changes. We can then speculate about Gana and Garner (at least one midfielder with that name will start). Also Calvert-Lewin and Beto although I believe Calvert-Lewin will always start unless he is playing elsewhere come Saturday morning.
Dyche now has some choices. Let's hope that he can make the correct ones. Young can dress up and throw mints to the crowd before kick-off and carry the tangerines at halftime (unless red-carded by Health Inspectors for inadequate hygiene procedures).

All to do with European games which will be played during the weeks of the next round of the Carabao cup, which will be played over two separate weeks. None of the European teams can be drawn against each other.

I hope it is just you, Benjamin. To me, Garner looks like a good footballer, a bit rusty at the moment after a few weeks out, helping the team out by doing his very best as part of the team.
I hope you are not a probation officer writing reports out for your clients!
34 Posted 29/08/2024 at 09:46:34
Only joking! I'm not allowed near offenders in case I get offended. I was commenting on the poor lad's appearance, not his football ability, but there are many players stealing a living right now at Everton!

It looks like we now have some proper options which the manager shouldn't be frightened of using.
Hopefully we've already plumbed the depths for this season and everything is now on an upwards trajectory.
Very pleased to see Mykolenko looks strongest he's ever been and the rookies seem capable of holding their own.
