Tim Iroegbunam has finally returned to first-team training after an absence that extends back to last October when he suffered a foot injury.

He is nearing a return to action and joined the senior squad for drills at the club’s Finch Farm training ground this week.

The 21-year-old did well get through the gruelling pre-season training region devised by former manager, Sean Dyche. He started the first four Premier League games of the season, but was limited to appearances from the subs bench in three of the next four games before his availability was progressively undermined by injuries in September and early October.

Iroegbunam was finally diagnosed with a stress fracture in his foot that has kept him sidelined for the past 3 months, with this weekend's trip to Brighton being the 15th Premier League game he has missed.

James Garner was hit with a back injury around the same time and he too is  approaching a return to the first-team squad. Garner returned to training last week and David Moyes said the midfielder could be given playing time with the U21s before rejoining with the first-team squad for matchday preparations.

Another midfielder returning from long-term injury is Everton Academy product Stan Mills. The 21-year-old scored on his return to action for Everton U21s last Friday, his first game after just over a year out with a bad knee injury sustained on loan with Oxford United last January.

Mills has shown some impressive skills and the next test for him will be to impress David Moyes sufficiently to earn a chance to show what he can do in the first team, assuming he does not go out on loan again for the rest of the season.

Very good news indeed. In those first four matches he was our best player.

It'll be like new signings - without the expenditure!

Great news, particularly as we've not heard much about any new signings !

Brian W, spot on there mate, mind you, he didn't have a lot of competition back then. His only failing was, he seemed to fade after about 70 minutes. Great to have him back soon !

Certainly helps having players return.
What was it Napoleon said? "Give me Lucky generals".
Garner can play either midfield or very ably at right back, both areas we need help.
Tim looked like he could become a useful player in the position currently held by Doucoure. (As does young Armstrong).
With Chermiti, who impressed preseason, it gives us cover, and in some cases improvements, on what we have been seeing.
This doesn't mean we can be complacent in the transfer market. But it does mean we don't have to make panic signings. We still need some pace and any quality additions are welcome. But add McNeil to the mix (who also gives cover at left wing back?) and suddenly it feels like we have a squad.

Great to see both back, gives us more attacking options in midfield, no word on McNeill, who is definitely a big miss, especially in Moyes more offensive formation. Would still like a couple of additions in the window.

Players returning to fitness is brilliant news, Tim in particular looked a very useful player, get him fit Davey..
Garner and McNeil fit straight back in when ready, and suddenly we have options to rotate and substitute, something we have really missed.
I hope that Daveys in game management is a step up from Sean, we will see soon enough.
If we can improve player fitness and reduce injuries these guys alone could be enough to secure our prem future, and we might see the permanent signing of Mangala and perhaps Lindstrom in the summer.

Be great to see both back - in fact be good to see all the injured players back - unfortunately Broja the exception given his injury and recovery time. We need plenty of players to choose from and hopefully a few additions - Willian?

Players becoming fit again are not like new signings to me. If anything missing them so much highlights the need for new signings. We need a squad.

The elephant in the room for me is still striker. Dom had scored three goals this season. And he’s injury prone. If I was Moyes I wouldn’t let Thelwell even consider a new signing (unless a deal that was too good to turn down came along…) until we had a striker in the bag. Goals win games. Add a Watkins or a Chris wood to this squad and we’d be pushing for Europe no question.

Good news, Tim definitely has something about him and Garner will be well liked by Moyes. I'd like to see these two start together in the future, they could possibly be our first choice midfield next season with Gueye coming to the end and Mangala returning to France, so we need to look at them this season.

News that Alan Irvine and Charlie Adam have joined Davey Moyes 💙

Adam is a strange one?

He was a midfielder all his career but is apparently joining as a "set-piece" coach - which I wouldn't have necessarily thought to be his forte, given his playing career.

Time will tell - no doubt.

I guess we'll have to overlook the 28 games Adam played for Liverpool!

Happy to do it as long as he does a decent job

Welcome back to Timmy and Jimmy... you've been missed!

Re Charlie Adam, I now expect every free kick we hit to look like his at Wembley.

Ah, never mind. If he can just teach our guys to clear the first defenders on set-pieces, I'll be thrilled.

When you watch any game of football, the percentage of set pieces that don't beat the first man is quite high, Mike.

Although there is a very, very, very simple solution for this, it's very rare that you see the front man clearing the cross under any real pressure.

Brian, he had us down to lose 2-0 to Spurs, whilst Ipswich were going to beat Brighton and Man City. Let’s hope he continues this losing streak! 😂😂

I think Garner is a very effective midfielder when fit. It's the ‘when fit' bit which is a concern.

Two back injuries in three seasons does not augur well for a lad still in his early 20's. It could be a risk to think he would be a mainstay next season.

Rob, if he keeps going, he may get one though law of averages!!

Good to see players coming back and just at the right time.

With a signing or two, the run-in could be interesting. Every match is important, however Leicester is massive. Win that I think we can look up a bit more.

Tony, it's a difficult art. Ronaldo and Rooney to a degree had it to a tee, the former with his own technique.

Also, a lot of teams now have a player lying down behind the wall as they cottoned on to the free kick taker going low and under the wall as it jumped.

Charlie Adam was a nasty SOAB but he knew how to take free kicks. They loved him at Blackpool.

So now players have to be shown how to kick the ball… I wonder who coached Sheedy?

Iroegbunam looked a really exciting prospect from what we saw of him. I really hope we look after him. Given the contract situation at the club, he and Garner are currently our only central midfielders due to be here next season.

As for set pieces, the coach is tasked with devising different ‘plays’ rather than teaching the taker how to kick a ball. I’m always amazed how badly set-up nearly all teams are on attacking set-pieces. My Sunday league team used to be better organised (mainly because I took charge of organising the set-pieces).

It’s the corner that gets cleared at the near post uncontested that I was especially referring to Danny.

How many times have you seen a bad corner end up creating a chance, by simply putting a player at the near post, to flick on or put pressure on a bad ball?

Ed Prytherch
28 Posted 23/01/2025 at 17:22:15
Taking a good free kick or corner is a skill that can be taught and practiced. It is a weakness at Everton when McNeil is not playing and even when he is, we need another who can do it with his right foot.

Adam can also be our dirty tackle coach.

Dave (26) Just to add fuel to your fire, am I right in thinking that Charlie’s agent was Kenny Moyes, brother of David?

Great to see these two players getting back to full training, it also must have been tough for Mills being out so long.
I would like to see Tim in Ducoures role as I think he is an exciting player.
Garner will be a Moyes favorite for sure with his application and flexibility.
A couple of signings added and we could do well and not have to look over our shoulder at relegation.

John (29) as reported on a Rangers site
“The pair know each other well. Moyes' brother is the agent of Adam, while the ex-Gers, Blackpool, Liverpool and Stoke midfielder lodged with Moyes' family when making his way as a youngster at Ibrox.”
Mike Gaynes

Tony #17-27 and Mike #25, exactly and it drives me nuts.

I was the set piece taker on every Sunday league team I played on for 30 years, and the only times I couldn't clear the front man were when the area around the corner flag was a mud hole or a divot and the ref wouldn't let me move the ball out of it.

It staggers me that so many professionals playing on tailored fields can't elevate the ball over one guy. We had a final free kick chance at Bournemouth and Young couldn't even hoist the ball into the mixer. Drilled it right to the first defender. Too easy.

John #21, unfortunately I think you're right. You can't condition your way out of a back problem, and a proclivity for back injuries and months-long absences is a very bad sign for his career durability.

Dave #26, why does it stink? Don't most managers hire assistants they already know and trust? Would you expect Moyes to do a bunch of job interviews and hire guys he doesn't know?

Dave (26). I agree about Adams, dunno how he's a set piece specialist coach. Fleetwood sacked him as manager 22nd of December and before that he was Burnley's loans manager - maybe he worked for the Provvy too doing door step loans?

For me we were better under Moyes when Irvine was Asst' manager. Round was far too negative.

Obviously I don't want any player's being rushed back.
Younger players need to be rotated to prevent burn out and reoccurring injuries.

Hopefully Tim can come back and I agree, he looked our best player but stamina was tested after 60 plus minutes. That will increase as his body gets used to playing more regularly. If he add goals to his game, Tim can become our new Tim!
Garners record of back injuries leads me to put in the handle with care category. We would probably sell when we can as its clearly a weakness that I don't think he will overcome.
Not writing off his career, just a liability we can't afford.
Mangala should be made perm. He replaces Gana when he leaves / retires.
Also frees up another foreign loan slot for this window.

With Tim & Garner coming back it's coming at the perfect time.

Doucouré & Gana struggle after 60 mins ( see Spurs game ) both of them are better in possession than Doucouré and Tim offers something no other central midfield player offers, he carries the ball Forward.

Where we didn't really have legs to bring on in the centre of the park against spurs, these 2 returning give us opportunities to. Be it as starting players or from the bench.

Garners versatility will be useful as a starter or from the bench.

Tim starts for me when fit over dacoure.

If Mcneil gets back then we go

Pickford

Obrien Tarks Branthwaite Myko

Lindstrom gana mangala Tim mcneil

Ndiaye

DCL

You can rotate gana, mangala

With garner

You can bring on Doucouré who does offer a good press and physicality when needed .

Options are good . Who'd have thought we may not be able to know 5 days before who will start ??
