Everton U21s travelled to Whitley Park in Benton, where they led for most of the match against Newcastle Utd U21s in Premier League 2, before conceding two late goals on Monday night.  

The Blues lineup featured Reece Welch, returning from his season-long loan cut short at KMSK Deinze in the 2nd tier of Belgium's Challenger Pro League. There was also a rare sighting of Kingsford Boakye on the bench.

The Young Blues went ahead after 22 minutes when Omari Benjamin profited after a scramble in the box.

Martin Sherif banged home a penalty in the second half after Benjamin was brought down to strengthen the Young Blues' hold on this game. But they eventually conceded with 17 minutes to go, and another goal saw the lead evaporate with 10 minutes left.

Everton U21s:  Barnsley, Dixon, Samuels-Smith, Welch, Thomas, J Patterson, Benjamin (87' Boakye), Bates (88' Moonan), Sherif (62' Morgan), Heath, Ebere (62' Barker).
