It depends how you look at it 04/02/2025 47comments | Jump to last "Thanks to David Moyes, Everton's outlook for the remainder of the season has changed significantly since the day he was appointed but the Club will be riding its luck where the centre-forward position is concerned and it could end up costing them financially anyway," writes Lyndon Lloyd. » Read the full article at Evertonia Reader Comments (47) Note: the following content is not moderated or vetted by the site owners at the time of submission. Disclaimer () Jim Bennings 1 Posted 04/02/2025 at 07:07:07 The signing of Alcaraz impresses me, I've like the look of this lad for a while and an attacking midfielder.I can't deny however the lack of striking options is a huge concern.I can't get away from the thinking that what if Beto gets injured? We don't have any other available fit option.DCL and Broja are gone until March at the earliest probably a bit longer before fit.Chermiti ain't kicked a ball in anger all season. Robert Tressell 2 Posted 04/02/2025 at 07:16:15 We just obviously don't have any money. Wolves have attempted to secure their position with 3 signings for just under €50m. Bournemouth have bought two of the most talented teenagers in world football in Soler and Kroupi. Etc etc.Alcaraz might be an astute signing - but it's all about minimising spending. Mark Murphy 3 Posted 04/02/2025 at 07:17:45 Chermiti is apparantly 3 or 4 weeks away. Sherif is on the bench lately - Im assuming hell step up. IF not we wouldnt be surprised, or dismayed, to see Sherif get some minutes in the cup game.IF not we can play a front three without a target man with Ndiaye as the false nine. When is McNeil back btw?UTFT Derek Thomas 4 Posted 04/02/2025 at 07:21:45 I said as much in the Transfer Thread, our best signing...and it wrankles somewhat...was David Moyes, 3 quick wins in the bank and OBrien, Lindstrom and Beto are looking like 3 new signings. One Swallow and all that and we're still going to lose games...hopefully not the Derby. But up to now most of us have a slight smile on our faces - even the ones who think the window was a total piece of shit. James Hughes 5 Posted 04/02/2025 at 07:26:50 I see that despite facing 115 charges from the PL that Citteh have still spent £150 million. That is a two fingered salute IMO Colin Glassar 6 Posted 04/02/2025 at 07:30:29 I think now its a question of surviving this season and see in the summer if these yanks are the real deal or not.So far, for me, the jury is still out. Robert Tressell 7 Posted 04/02/2025 at 07:41:47 Colin - what do you mean by the real deal? Ray Robinson 8 Posted 04/02/2025 at 07:44:14 Money is still tight and PSR obviously still has an influence on us, so Im glad that weve saved our dosh for a summer rebuild. If wed not gained 9 points in our last 3 matches, we might have had to think differently. There are only 2 league matches in March, so Im guessing were counting on getting a lot of the injured back by April. Colin Glassar 9 Posted 04/02/2025 at 07:48:29 I want to see if they are really ambitious, Robert. Or, is their plan is for us to remain in the prem while squeezing every penny they can out of BMD through non-football events. The summer transfer window will show us who they really are. Ernie Baywood 10 Posted 04/02/2025 at 07:50:58 I guess money is tight and possibly they didn't want to waste coin on short term fixes when we'll likely stay up anyway. We've had pretty much the worst case of PSR problems in recent years, yet we're not the only ones who avoided spending in this window. I suppose we just go with what we've got. And we shouldn't get too carried away with the last three results. It's been better than what went before and some good fun, but there are tougher days ahead. Jim Bennings 11 Posted 04/02/2025 at 07:52:19 We won't go down anyway, I haven't got any concerns about. If we'd just had this window while Dyche was here then I'd be completely shitting myself but I think Moyes is better at getting players believing in themselves more than the previous fella who just wanted everyone to believe all he had was a part-time Sunday league team.I imagine the summer will be the true window of opportunity for TFG to show us what they can or can't do with the money. Mal van Schaick 12 Posted 04/02/2025 at 07:55:20 Everton still need results and points on the board, but as long as we play as we played against Brighton and Leicester we should have enough to fend off the threat of relegationI will be surprised if we see Alcatraz start a game for a month unless we have further injuries, but hes one for next season along with other new signings in the summer. Ian Bennett 13 Posted 04/02/2025 at 08:01:31 So it looks like FIVE on loan then 🤔 That'll upset a couple 😬. Derek Knox 14 Posted 04/02/2025 at 08:18:34 Ian, to the best of my knowledge and interpretation, both of which are drip fed, and limited. The Club got a dispensation over Mangala's loan, due to his being a season ending injury. This allowed the loan of Alcaraz, but after playing a certain amount of games (7 or 8), the obligation to purchase kicks in. Hope I have that right ! Richard Duff 15 Posted 04/02/2025 at 08:39:55 Im OK with this window as July 1st is the big financial reset. It wont be easy but we will be safe with what weve got coming back to fitness. In the meantime, if Beto is shot after 80 mins we have Sherif as his deputy. Derek Knox 16 Posted 04/02/2025 at 08:46:10 Richard, as long as Eric Clapton doesn't shoot either ! :-) Robert Tressell 17 Posted 04/02/2025 at 08:50:32 Colin, I don't believe there will be any ambitious levels of spending by TFG. They are here to stabilise the finances and then make money. But I am hopeful that they will release up to about £50m on top of any player sales this summer. That should help us escape the cycle of annual relegation battles. Bill Fairfield 18 Posted 04/02/2025 at 08:57:29 Though disappointed we cant compete for the best players at the moment, Iam sure the move to the new stadium will put us on a more stable financial footing, and once again allow us to compete at the top table. Robert Tressell 19 Posted 04/02/2025 at 09:05:47 Bill, we can't currently compete for any players. The new stadium will not allow us to suddenly outbid City for a player like Marmoush. The top table is miles away. If we are able to compete in summer with the likes of Palace and Bournemouth that will be a huge step forward from where we've been for nearly 5 years. Scott Hamilton 20 Posted 04/02/2025 at 09:21:59 If we stay up comfortably, without having needlessly spent millions in January, then it wont be a failed window.Ifs, buts and maybes, obvs. Sam Hoare 21 Posted 04/02/2025 at 09:24:00 Difficult to know exactly why we didnt bring in more players but most likely a combination of bad PSR and bad value in the market. A lot of our recent problems are due to improvident transfers so Id rather make no transfers than unhelpful ones; if the right deals werent there then its better to keep the powder dry.In the summer we will get a better idea of what TFG will bring to the table in terms of squad building. Many will hope that Thelwell wont be here by then but personally I think hes done a pretty decent job and Charly Alcaraz looks like another sensible addition at low cost/risk. OBrien is now looking like a solid acquisition and if Beto keeps up anything like his performance against Leicester he may yet prove his worth whilst Ndiaye at £15m must be one our best transfers in a long while. Jim Bennings 22 Posted 04/02/2025 at 12:36:54 I don't think we were ever promised many signings from anyone at the club for this month so it's not like we've had someone in the day at the last minute and then it fell through, we have had many a window where that's happened to us.In an ideal world I'd like to have seen Evan Ferguson come in, I don't know why but maybe the loan situation has conducted that one and we've got too many already. It's just a shame that as soon as Moyes walks through the door we lose two strikers through injury Mike Gaynes 23 Posted 04/02/2025 at 18:44:45 Jim B., should Beto go down for some reason, I'd expect Moyes to simply push Doucs forward and slide Ndiaye in behind him. That's what he did with Fellaini and Cahill. Worked pretty well as I recall. Per Boyland at the New York Times, we did run at Ferguson but we were never higher than third on his preference list. He just had more attractive options. And we also made an offer for Fellows. So it's not like there wasn't an effort to sign a young forward. At least we didn't try to bring in Diego Costa on a free. Now THAT would have been panic personified. Colin Glassar 24 Posted 04/02/2025 at 18:55:41 All well and good, Mike, but when did these “attempts” to sign players begin? Probably yesterday at 6pm. Its the Everton way after all. Stu Gre 25 Posted 04/02/2025 at 19:18:51 Mal #12 - interesting thoughts on Alcaraz, I assumed he'd be part of the first team plans straight away given he's only on loan til the end of the season. Simon Harrison 26 Posted 04/02/2025 at 21:41:20 Personally, I feel the window has done what it needed to do.We sold one youth player for pure profit. We loaned out one youth player to get much needed first team football at Championship level. We brought in a Prem League player with just over two years Championship and PL experience. Though according to Russell Martin (former Soton manager) he isn't that technically developed to be played in Martin's pure passing system. However, he is pretty much attack minded, can play centrally or either flank.Maybe him being an incoming, was the rocket that improved Doucoure's play vs Leicester last Saturday? This ties up with Timmy and Jimmy returning to the team, and YC, DCL and Broja 'reportedly' via the club returning between 3-6 weeks or so.Job done, excellent signings, decent loans, and I'd take that with 9/15 points in January and progress to the FAC 4th round.Mark M, [3]I'd still prefer Omari Benjamin, but I haven't seen either in action? Simon Harrison 27 Posted 04/02/2025 at 21:46:04 Robert T, I saw on the Charly thread you mentioned about Wolves and Ipswich strengthening for the season run-in; did you see these two Ipswich signings from last night?21:32 - Somto Boniface [Chelsea - Ipswich] Undisclosed21:32 - Alex Palmer [West Brom - Ipswich] Undisclosed Jay Harris 28 Posted 04/02/2025 at 22:45:46 Personally speaking I remain concerned about the lack of signings particularly if we get some injuries in certain positions. Full back and CF remain a concern for me. I just hope we have enough in the tank to get at least 10 points from our final 15 games. Mike Gaynes 29 Posted 04/02/2025 at 23:03:50 Jay, we've got Young as cover at both FB spots. Jay Harris 30 Posted 04/02/2025 at 23:09:16 Mike I Agee, but what if both Obrien and Myko get injured.Seamus looks like he is finished and Patto's injury record isn't great.I know that's worst case scenario but we have 15 games to go plus (hopefully) any cup games. Ernie Baywood 31 Posted 04/02/2025 at 23:30:03 Mike, I suppose the plus side to Young's age is that he's probably not going to get much slower. He could well end up with another contract. Mike Gaynes 32 Posted 04/02/2025 at 23:54:42 Ernie, I'd be shocked. Ed Prytherch 33 Posted 05/02/2025 at 00:15:06 Mike, I wouldn't be shocked. If his wage demands are reasonable, he is a good guy to have on the bench and he would probably be happy with that. Derek Knox 34 Posted 05/02/2025 at 03:29:27 Glad we didn't get more new faces in, IF, they were panic buys, but realistically would have welcomed a quick RW, a Striker and decent LB, if they were part of the rebuilding process for next season. A lot of contracts expire in the summer, and apart from Gana would be surprised to see any renewed or extended.Like many have already mentioned, glad we got the Alcaraz deal done, though it didn't look like happening at one point. I hope he proves to be part of the picture after so many games. I would like to see the goals being shared out too, between all departments, and not just relying on those up front ! Eric Myles 35 Posted 05/02/2025 at 08:21:36 "An injury to the more senior Portuguese forward would leave Moyes without a first-team striker at all."Didn't Moyes put out teams without a recognise striker in his first appointment with us? Barry Williams 36 Posted 05/02/2025 at 08:37:05 Eric Myles - 35He played Fellaini and Cahill in tandem with each other, swapping roles if I recall. When Beto was subbed off - he put Ndiaye as a forward - who then scored! Rob Jones 37 Posted 05/02/2025 at 09:24:02 I think we let ourselves be swept up in the soundbites from "ITK" types who claimed we'd be making signings. As it is, if the injuries are quicker recoveries than we were initially told, I'd imagine we'll be fine.Alcaraz could be an inspired signing, and others have said, put a rocket underneath Doucoure. We're nine clear, with Ipswich and Southampton still to come to Goodison. Beat them, go on a cup run, and a couple other (maybe three more wins in the league), and I can live with it.If West Brom and Sunderland stay in the Championship, I'd fully expect Moyes to pilfer them in the summer. He always did sign from the Championship, often with great results. Brian Harrison 38 Posted 05/02/2025 at 09:53:07 I don't know why anyone was expecting more activity in the Jan transfer market, Moyes said only a week ago he didn't realize how much PSR had effected the club. Also he said there is no point in spending money if it doesn't improve the squad. He has signed a 22 year old Argentinian who has already been capped by his country and has got Premier league experience, what's not to like. Dave Abrahams 39 Posted 05/02/2025 at 10:05:02 Brian (38) I dont think there is much to dislike about Alcaraz coming in and hopefully the results from the rest of the season will prove there was nothing to worry about getting only one player in the January window. Brian Williams 40 Posted 05/02/2025 at 10:16:33 Brian#38Steady on with that sensible outlook Brian you'll upset people. Danny O'Neill 41 Posted 05/02/2025 at 10:39:33 Totally Brian,Parking any PSR concerns to one side, the Manager and Thelwell didn't have time to establish a working relationship.I too am intrigued by the Alcaraz signing Dave. He could turn out to be a bit of a steal if I believe the figures I'm reading.I think before the introduction of transfer windows and deadline days (Sky Sports making a seeming 24 hour programme out of it as the tumbleweeds keep rolling past), I recall us signing a certain Kevin Campbell late on in the season on loan from Turkey. In those initial few months, he went on to be our leading goal scorer that season. Liam Mogan 42 Posted 05/02/2025 at 11:00:09 Brian 38 - I don't think Alcaraz has a full international cap yet for Argentina. Hopefully he'll get one whilst at Everton. Jimmy Carr 43 Posted 05/02/2025 at 11:13:10 Having one striker available is a concern, though on the other hand, we demonstrated on Saturday that we know how to play to Beto's strengths. Surprising that we were able to switch to passing 'through balls' in along the deck so quickly, I expect that change wouldn't have happened with the previous manager, and it may not even have occurred to him. If I'm reading TFG right - and I have no idea whether I am - then I expect Thelwell to remain in place and a no more than modest transfer budget to be available in the summer. Stabilizing does not mean spending upwards of £30m on a whim on a player that the manager fancies. I think those days, thankfully, are behind us. We need a more structured and risk averse approach to recruitment, and I hope the work led by Thelwell continues, shopping in the bargain basement is also something Moyes is familiar with. I hope the two of them can work together going forward. There's also some irony in the fact that now David Moyes has returned to Everton, all of the big spending occurred while he was away, it's back to square one for him. David West 44 Posted 05/02/2025 at 12:22:32 I just don't see TFG splashing big on players in the summer. The 10 + players with expiring contracts and loans, though, will lead to a rebuild of sorts. It's going spread around rather than 1 or 2 big signings. We need LB & RB cover or starters ! Gana & Doucouré need replacing. Harrison, mangala, Broja all heading back. Will we take up the Lindstrom option? Dcl going !Keane, gana, dacoure, young, Coleman, Virginia all could leave. Then will Branthwaite stay ?It's going to be interesting. TFG must of already had the conversations with Moyes, the owners must know the summer could need big investment across the first team. I'm thinking it will be Jarred on his way to give the extra funds and psr wiggle room. Rob Dolby 45 Posted 05/02/2025 at 16:11:45 The previous 3 wins have lifted the place and provided a sense of optimism very much like the 3 wins in a week last year under Dyche in very testing circumstances.Moyes and Thelwell know what they want. It's another thing getting it in the current climate. If we hadn't of got the 3 wins there would be murder on here about the failings of the club. We need quality all over the park, we have a couple of decent players and lots of average ones.We need reinforcements, buying a player in January who is out of contract in the summer is a risk we should have tried, maybe we did and got knocked back?Lots of free agents will be in high demand in the summer due to psr biting most clubs. DCl to Newcastle has been rumoured for months. Even if he bombs out up there they will be able to sell him for a profit like Lloyd Kelly.Personally I think it's a failed window from a footballing point of view as I have no grasp of our financial position other than psr restrictions.Arsenal are saying they are disappointed with the window by not landing 29 year old Watkins for £60m then maybe us being 5th from bottom with 1 fit striker should also be disappointed? Justin Doone 46 Posted 06/02/2025 at 12:51:47 This seasons goal is to remain in the Premier league. Anything better is a bonus. I would repeat this for next season. Many fans will not agree but we are in effect playing at a neutral venue until we settle in and make it home. We need a bit of luck with injuries and recruitment as so many player's are out of contract etc. That's where Moyes will trump the DOF. He knows we need player's for this and next season. DOF generally (in my view) looks longer term, at younger players to step up and or sell for a profit. Justin Doone 47 Posted 06/02/2025 at 12:54:00 But.. what I don't understand is how we can judge a DOF after 2 seasons. Is it as simple as saying you selected the manager and if he fails, the DOF has failed?
