Dr Everton's latest video remembrances

The living legend Dr Everton, aka Dr David France, is back with another video of rich memories. This is one of three videos produced on behalf of The Everton FC Heritage Society by Royden Media (Mike and son Lewis Royden) to celebrate David's contributions to Everton and Evertonians.

In this one, entitled The Legacy of Dr Everton – My EFC Initiatives, the remarkable curator of Everton's history is being interviewed by Chris Beesley at the Winslow about his recollections of founding Gwladys Street's Hall of Fame — the first Hall of Fame in English football (David got advice from the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York), the Everton Former Players' Foundation, The Everton Collection, The Everton FC Heritage Society, Everton War Memorials and Founding Fathers of Merseyside Football Portraits.

As most of you may know, David is also the author of 19 Everton books. #20 is in the works — Dr Everton's Toffeemen, a limited edition opus of 5,000 pages.

The other two videos produced by Roydon are The Legacy of Dr Everton – Desert Island Memorabilia (with David Prentice) and Everton's Swinging Sixties, a season-by-season retrospective of that colourful era.

Mike, thank you for posting this.

So far I have only watched the discussion between Dr Everton and Chris Beesley. It takes about 37 minutes and I highly recommend it to everyone on TW.

It is easy for us to take for granted the achievements of David France and his various associates. But we as Evertonians have resources and real life history that are the leader in world football. Additionally, many, many ex-players have been helped by the Former Players Foundation.

Personally, memories of the Hall of Fame dinners at The Adelphi will go with me to the grave - people dancing on tables, wild revelry, drinking and singing - and then the evening got underway. As my brother said - “A cross between a Hitler Youth rally and a Billy Graham religious revival meeting”.

I know the Hall of Fame is mainly made up of former players and officials, but I wonder whether anyone has thought of inducting David (and maybe his ever-tolerant wife, Elizabeth)?

Living Legend is right, Mike and this video series is a wonderful illustration of the good Doctor Everton's burgeoning legacy as one of the most important figures in the club's history. Few, if any, fans can match his contributions, not only to illuminating and preserving EFC's recorded history but also to improving the lives of those players who helped create it.

The Everton Collection needs no introduction and as mentioned above, but his founding of the Everton Former Players' Foundation stands out as a hallmark of his compassion and altruism, copied by other clubs (including Barcelona) as a means of looking after ex-players who had fallen on hard times or were beset by medical problems following their retirement.

As you mention, Mike, David has written 19 books and, as a memoir, his "Everton Crazy" contains many of his precious stories following the Blues and his friendship with a good many of them, particularly from the 1960s.

But having him recounting them on video is a great treasure so if you love your history these videos are well worth your time.

I’m happy to see David looking so well and still producing volumes of Evertonia. The new three volume set of caricatures wouldn’t be possible without someone having actual photos of every player that ever pulled on a blue kit. That someone is Dr. Everton.

He told me one time that he never haggled the price of anything he purchased. He and Elizabeth were in my shop one time, and Elizabeth told me of a particular incident. They were driving home from purchasing an object, and she asked David what he had paid. He informed her. She demanded that he turn around, give it back and get their money back.

It’s a very limited edition, but I would love a set.

The Everton Collection should have a place of honour at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

No other football club can match it.
