In FourFourTwo magazine, Joe Donnohue has some nice things to say about the boy who's a bit special:
In a way, David Moyes robbed Football League spectators of what could have been one of the most 'streets won't forget' seasons from Dibling in a Southampton shirt, but we're happy to have him in the Premier League.
The 19-year-old has had his fair share of clubs, including a brief spell at Chelsea's renowned Cobham academy, but Southampton has always proven to be his safe space and ultimately the launchpad.
The Everton teenager has an excellent command of the ball at his feet, not breaking stride, smoothly moving through the gears in a way which suggests he should be stoppable, but often isn't. Dibling eats ground in an elegant manner, carrying the ball seamlessly.

Maybe one day we'll see somebody from the Academy getting a run out or at least a spot on our own bench.

One notable run in on goal and shot but from too narrow an angle and too close ot Henderson, who is a pretty good goalie.
The problem is, Dibling has not been given anywhere near enough game time to even attempt to integrate with the way the team plays. And that is entirely a failing by Moyes.
Or the kid is complete garbage and Saints have taken us as the biggest mugs in the history of the Premier League. But maybe that's your point?

Accommodating him and the others would probably mean playing Grealish, Garner, Gana, Dewsbury-Hall, Ndiaye and Dibling midfield and up front, in no particular order.
No focal point like Beto or Barry. Nor Alcaraz.

He didn't look strong enough or physical enough to be doing doggies out wide so I think he might be better suited to the Number 10 role until we have got fullbacks who can run past their partner and attack.
He looks like a very natural footballer to me, though, and made one simple 10-yard pass that got Everton breaking from deep. It looked a lot easier than it actually was when the ball had come fizzing towards him at pace.
Is he ready to start? Does this even matter? It's a squad game now and players can be just as effective at the end of a game as they can be at the start of a game, which is something that our three subs proved today.
I put the highlights of the game on my iPad a couple of hours ago and it only brought up last years 2-1 home victory against Palace (or was it the year before). A player who can't get a sniff right now (McNeil) scored two magnificent goals that day, and is definitely another player who should be getting more minutes
It's imperative that Moyes starts trying to create a bigger squad of players that he can place his trust in; otherwise, it can never be given in return.

Dewsbury-Hall … oh no wait a minute
Ndiaye … erm maybe not
Grealish then?
Maybe changed the whole way we play and not really had a centre-forward so we could give him those minutes.
Or maybe he just isn't ready yet. Might be great one day but perhaps not quite yet?

Him and young Barry were so very poor and should have been hooked on 20 minutes.
9 Posted 05/10/2025 at 22:45:41
I watched him a bit for Southampton and I'm not yet seeing the confident, swashbuckling attacker I saw in red and white. He looks to me like he's in awe of his new surroundings and lacking in confidence. You never see him asking for the ball and he looks scared of making mistakes.
The good thing is that we've seen him perform in the Premier League before, so it's in there. A very different situation to Barry; we don't really know if he's worth persisting with.
Give him time. And maybe give him a sports psychologist!
10 Posted 05/10/2025 at 22:50:15
I saw Jack Grealish play when he was about 19. He played poorly, brushed off the ball, misplaced a few passes. Funnily enough, it didn't set him back. Turned out not too badly. He's had a good career so far.
Bit soon to write off the two you mention..
11 Posted 05/10/2025 at 22:50:47
A sports psychologist?
Perhaps Bobby #8 could step up...

13 Posted 05/10/2025 at 23:09:59
I will make a striker out of him.
14 Posted 05/10/2025 at 23:17:22
Brendan, where do I sign up?
17 Posted 06/10/2025 at 00:46:52
First and foremost in any Premier League side in any Pemier League game, you have to work hard and be brave on the ball. Dibling done neither of them things today.
Very poor showing, he has to do better.
18 Posted 06/10/2025 at 21:55:26
He's clearly someone who takes time to adjust and they are managing him carefully. He's got Ndiaye ahead of him in the pecking order, so I'm all good with him playing second fiddle for now and not having pressure on him.
Guess what, next season we may not have Grealish and, if Ndiaye shifts back to the left, then he'll be ready to step in and be the first choice.
Stop trying to write him and Barry off and let's judge them when they've been here a few months and played a bit more football.
Why do we always feel the need to crucify our players? Look at Keane this season and how much dog's abuse he's had over the years.
19 Posted 06/10/2025 at 22:11:20
Barry and Dibling have been here 5 minutes and already some have written them off. Unbelievable.
20 Posted 06/10/2025 at 22:34:04
I think David Moyes was trying to give them a chance and it really backfired. I actually think it was a good performance from the coach. Had a go, got it wrong, put it right.
21 Posted 06/10/2025 at 22:51:31
No wonder so many young players fall off the map when this type of pressure is put on them.
He was a big fish in a small pond, now he's a tadpole in a shark tank. Let him grow and give him time to develop, for fuck's sake.
22 Posted 06/10/2025 at 23:45:48
You're right. An hour of football? For fuck's sake, anyone with a brain could suss a player out in 60 seconds or less.
I just wish we had unlimited subs in which case we can sub someone on and based on his first three steps if we don't like how he moves we immediately sub him off again and add him to the deadwood pile.
We've gotten too soft. Nil Satis Nisi Optimum. #NewSigningsOut

The problem I have is that I assume that both of them have some game in there somewhere, but both, Barry in particular, looked like they have no confidence whatsoever and didn't really believe they were going to succeed with anything they did.
They are going to need help to come back from that humiliation... because that is what it was. With the great benefit of hindsight, my original opinion about playing them from the start and to give especially Barry a decent run in the side was probably a mistake. They are both too fragile for that.
My hope is they can get some minutes, maybe if we ever have a game we are controlling and then to pull off a decent move, pass, shot or even tackle. Just something to get their head up and a cheer from the crowd. In Barry's case, maybe a goal off his arse. Anything.

"Or the kid is complete garbage and Saints have taken us as the biggest mugs in the history of the Premier League."
That's what a Saints supporting mate of mine thinks!
25 Posted 07/10/2025 at 14:10:21
If you look where the balls out of defence were played, they were down the left side of the pitch. Dibling didn't get enough of the ball to make an impression. I read before we signed him that he is a quiet shy sort of a lad; calling him 'shite; is really going help him, isn't it.
Unless the officials of the club who thought enough of him to pay £35M+ are totally incompetent, he should turn out to be a good buy for us. We will see.
26 Posted 07/10/2025 at 14:23:37
He was at Chelsea but got homesick and went to Southampton, also they reckon he is a shy lad. He certainly showed flashes of brilliance at Southampton playing in the Premier League, so the lad does have ability.
With the AFCON coming up, Ndiaye and Gana will be missing from December to possibly the end of January, so he will definitely get opportunities.

Just reading a summary in The Athletic of transfers around the league, ranked 1-155.
The list of transfers who have had absolutely zero impact with their new clubs is star-studded, a millionaire's club: Isak, Elanga, McAtee, Kerkez, Hutchinson, Wirtz, Cunha, Frimpong, Chukwueze, Ouattara, Cherki, Garnacho, Gittens, Doak, Elliott, Wissa, Zinchenko, Nelson, Todibo, Muani, James Justin -- many players we pursued or coveted or looked at with envy as they signed huge deals -- plus the long-term injured like Delap and Hincapie and Ramsey. All flops so far.
Yet Moyes gets shredded for not using Dibling and Aznou.
It's a hit-or-miss game, folks. And we likely won't know about some of these youngsters for a year or more.

However, it seems like a perfect fit for both, so far.

Despite last season, he's still 'not ready' to be unleashed on the Premier League in a Blue shirt... is he, Mr Moyes?
