I guess we need to start getting in the mood for watching this midweek European stuff... just in case!

I liked the way Real Madrid were breaking fast and moving upfield.

But things have gone against them, when they were cut through by a great Gnabry pass that Diaz slammed home.

Hi Michael,

I thought we had 6 teams in the Champions League.

Liverpool, Newcastle, Spurs, Arsenal, Man City and Chelsea.

Ooo, John, I think you are right.

My mistake.

Harry Kane goal was a blinder!

And Real Madrid finally score.

Mbappe.

And Arsenal score a late first leg winner!

Which apparently ensures that the Premier League will definitely have at least five teams qualifying for the by virtue of their finishing position in the table. And there could be more:

If Aston Villa, who are currently 4th, win the Europa League and finish outside the Top Four, then England will have six teams in the Champions League next season. There are other scenarios as well.

We all know what tends to happen when such juicy carrots are placed before our team... so only time will tell whether or not we can step up to the challenge... with the next step set for Saturday afternoon at Brentford.

We could be playing in this competition next season.

Go 'ed, Moysey, it's over to you.

"The Scot said: "I'd love to say it was [a possibility] as I'm trying to be more positive than I would normally be, but for Everton to even be in the mix for Europe is unbelievable, whether it is Conference League or Champions League."

Go 'ed, Moysey, you can be more positive. The fans will back you.

With it a possibility that coming 6th, might guarantee a Champions League spot, then what an opportunity.

Look at Spurs, be careful what you wish for -- nah, not with our David in charge!

I watched most of the Real Madrid v Bayern Munich game and it was thoroughly entertaining and some of the best players on view had all played in the Premier League.

I thought Michael Olise was outstanding for Bayern and Harry Kane might have just won himself the Ballon d'Or if Bayern win the trophy, as I think they might.

Many questioned why Kompany was given the Bayern job after taking Burnley down; well, last night showed what a great bit of business that was. His team dominated Real Madrid in their own backyard.

Tony @12,

I believe only the Top 5 from the Premier League will qualify for next season's Champions League. I think the confusion is we might have a 6th club in the Champions League if a Premier League team wins the Europa League which gets automatic qualification to the Champions League.

Thanks, Brian. I'm not sure Aston Villa will hang on to 4th place but I think they are the team to beat in the Europa League, especially so because they have a manager who has got a fantastic pedigree in that particular competition.

It's why I think the Europa Conference League would be our best bet for silverware in years. My two biggest concerns about Moyes are that I am of the opinion that I'm not sure he could keep a bigger squad of good players happy (throughout his career, it looks to me that he has always fared better with smaller numbers) and I also don't think he approaches enough big games in a really confident manner.

The difference is that he has already won the Europa Conference League, which means that this should now be a competition that holds no fears for David... but he also came 4th in the Premier League once, so let's see how this season unfolds.

I see the BBC are running a poll on the best goalkeeper in Europe.

Naturally, the RS's 'Bearded lady' gets a mention. Pickford not even in the conversation!

I saw that, Edward (#16),

I just went for "Other" on that BBC poll. It would be funny if none of the BBC's named golden boys actually topped the poll.

Get posting, ToffeeWebbers!

PSG should have wrapped that up with two good chances near the end.

Hopefully Liverpool will have to come out and have a go in the second leg, leaving a lot more space for PSG to exploit than they did tonight.

Some team that PSG, Dave, very inspiring watching them make the game look so easy. Passing, movement, enjoying the ball, trusting their teammates, rotating, interchanging, playing quick, finding space, and all the time with a total awareness of each other's game.

VAR correctly saved Liverpool but then the same system incorrectly robbed PSG.

Why send the ref to the television screen for one decision, but not for the other decision? Maybe the referee wanted to keep the second leg interesting, but it really is very off-putting watching such inconsistent officiating at the highest levels of the game.

PSG will score at Anfield, hopefully more than once.

I'd put nothing past that crowd though.

They play Fulham late on Saturday, an emotionally draining Tuesday night against PSG then us 5 days later. And they've looked completely shot in the last couple of games already.

I've got a horrible feeling about it already…

Everton 5/2 at Brentford is a steal.

A win there and then to crown it, doing one on "The Dark Side" after they have been eliminated from the Champions League and then the chance of going above them, what a week in prospect!

Forest and Palace going nicely in Europa Leagues.

Two loaded, splash-the-cash clubs.
