News Headlines & Features

Great team performance to end 2006!
30 Dec - Everton closed out 2006 with an emphatic victory over a resurgent Newcastle with Victor Anichebe and Phil Neville grabbing their first league goals of the campaign. After a lively start, Anichebe forced the ball over the line to open the scoring after nine minutes and then, following a hilarious penalty miss from Obafemi Martins on the stroke of half time, the young striker was quickest to react when his header came off the bar and he scored from close range to make it 2-0. Minutes later, a fortunate shot from Neville looped in from 20 yards and it was party time at Goodison with the Blues back up to 7th! Match reports by Lyndon Lloyd and Paul Traill

Cahill back in full training
29 Dec - Good news for Everton: leading scorer Tim Cahill is back in full training, having made a quicker than expected recovery after being on the receiving end of a studs-up Carsley 'tackle'. He may be fit enough to play in the FA Cup Third Round tie against Blackburn a week on Sunday...

Frustrating result for the Blues
26 Dec - A disappointing result from an afternoon of earnest endeavour. With Lee Carsley wearing the captain's arm in Phil Neville's enforced absence, Everton made a strong and dominant start to the game, with a number of sweeping attacks and plenty of shouts for penalty appeals. But opportunities were spurned and they were unable to secure a vital back-to-back win this Christmas. Report from Paul Traill

Merry Christmas to Blues Everywhere!
25 Dec - We at ToffeeWeb wish Evertonians all over the world a very Merry Christmas, and best wishes to all of you for the rest of the Holiday season and the New Year. The three points from a fabulous win on Saturday have set things up nicely for us, and we'll be looking for things to continue with the next two games, at home to Middlesbrough (Boxing Day) and Newcastle (Saturday).

Johnson's goal drought over!
23 Dec - After a thrilling game last weekend, that turned on some superb goals fired in from outside the area, Everton's goal-shy forwards must have been studying the video and appear to have taken some inspiration for today's game against high-fliers, Reading. It took just 14 mins for Arteta to square the ball in nicely for Andy Johnson who finished superbly to put Everton in front. A brilliant strike from Osman should have made it two but hit the bar and bounced down right on the line. A great first half from Everton, and just after the break, a great goal from McFadden to set up a great road win. Match report by Lyndon Lloyd

Arteta has a foot injury
22 Dec - David Moyes has revealed that Mikel Arteta, star of Everton's determined performance against Chelsea last weekend, has been nursing a foot injury all week, and has not trained. He reamins doubtful for Saturday's trip to Reading.

Mourinho makes his apology
20 Dec - To Jos? Mourinho's credit, he has made a full apology after finally taking David Moyes's advice and viewing a video of the incident that caused him to call Andy Johnson "untrustworthy" after Sunday's match. He agrees that AJ was trying to avoid colliding with his goalkeeper. Jos? also takes the opportuniy to mend some bridges by saying nice things about Goodison, Everton, David Moyes, and his players.

Da Silva finally joins Everton!
19 Dec - The mysterious Brazilian player Anderson da Silva, who has suppossedly been with Everton for the last year, but out on loan at Malaga, has now signed a short-term contract (how long?) with Everton and will be assessed by David Moyes over the coming weeks. The lack of a valid passport prevented the player from joining Everton after he left Montevideo in 2005, so he played in the Spanish league last season, but his registration was not renewed for this season, which is why he was able to finally join the Blues outside of the official transfer window.

Everton demand Mouhino apology
18 Dec - Everton have reacted strongly and with full justification to the disgusting statements made by Jose Mourhino as he becomes the latest manager to call Andrew Johnson a diver. Something needs to be done about this nonsense and it seems Everton have got the balls (from somehwere!) to do something about it, threatening to take up the issue with the FA if they do not get satisfaction from Chelsea. At a personal level, AJ may sue Mourinho the Mouth for defamation.

Everton powerless to stop Chelsea fight-back
17 Dec - Having twice lead and done enough to win and been denied two strong penalty claims, Everton's hearts were broken by three sublime strikes, all from outside the area, as Chelsea got out of jail. Mikel Arteta slotted home from the spot late in the first half after Victor Anichebe had been fouled but when Mikel Ballack's free kick ricocheted off Tim Howard's back, the Londoners were level. Joseph Yobo headed home from a corner to restore the Blues' lead but Frank Lampard ? who else?! ? lashed home from 25 yards before Didier Drogba scored the pick of the bunch with a swivel shot from way out that killed off Everton's challenge as it rocketed past Howard. What a sickener. Report now available.

The AGM 2006
15 Dec - The salient points from this week's Annual General Meeting of Everton Shareholders ? most notably the Kirkby option ? may have already been publicised at length in the media but Colm Kavanagh's detailed account provides richer context behind what was said, particularly by Messrs. Kenwright, Wyness and Moyes.

ToffeeWeb Outage Update
14 Dec - We suffered a bit of a traffic-induced database meltdown yesterday that made the site inaccessible for much of the day, but we're pleased to announce that the homepage news is back after a hasty migration to a new database platform in the wee hours this morning. Some parts of the site may still be out of action or drawing from the old data so bear with us. Thanks for your patience!

Macclesfield Town v Everton
13 Dec - So, it's not Back to football after all, as Everton's Academy players will now have to wait until next Tuesday to take on Macclesfield Town in the FA Youth Cup. The pitch at Moss Rose was declared unfit to play after recent bad weather.

More double-speak from the top
12 Dec - [Link fixed] Talking to BBC Radio 5Live in an attempt to placate the anger and fears of many Evertonians who are not in any way enthused about a move outside the City of Liverpool to a new stadium in Kirby, CEO Keith Wyness says, "redeveloping Goodison Park may well be the way ahead in the end." ? which directly contradicts what Billy Kenwright told shareholders in last night's AGM: "it is not an option for Everton to remain at Goodison Park".

Kirkby option confirmed at AGM
11 Dec - As expected, the Everton Board confirmed to shareholders at this evening's AGM that the club are investigating the possibility of relocating to Kirkby. A formal announcement to that effect will be made tomorrow. "[I]n conjunction with Knowsley Borough Council and Tesco, we are investigating the possibility of a major regeneration initiative in Kirkby, one which might provide us with a new home," CEO Keith Wyness is quoted as saying by the Official site. "I must stress that this does not, in any way, constitute a final decision on the location of any new stadium for the Club." Some shareholders didn't approve. Do you support the proposal?

Tesco deal for Kirkby to be announced
11 Dec - The stage has been carefully set for tonight, when holders of shares in Everton FC Co Ltd will meet at Goodison Park for the 127th Annual General Meeting of the company. Bill Kenwright is up for re-election, and is expected to make an announcement regarding the Board's intentions to move to a new stadium in Kirkby, with some kind of a 'deal' with Knowsley Borough Council and Tesco to explore the possibility of building a new stadium as part of the multi-million pound regeneration of Kirkby.

One Year On
10 Dec - One year on from "the best financial results in Everton's history", Gary Crumley summarizes the accounts for Everton FC Co Ltd for the financial year ending 31 May 2006. The Annual Report & Accounts will be presented to the Everton Shareholders at Monday's AGM, and no doubt a positive spin will be applied by Mr Wyness, whose massive renumeration package (?466k) has recieved a lot of attention. He has overseen a bottom-line swing of over ?34M, from a widely trumpeted ?23.5M profit in 2005 to a dismal ?10.8M loss in 2006. Does this confirm thoughts expressed by some that the Club has already been spending the ?28M windfall in TV rights money due next year?

Beaten by the odd wonder-goal
9 Dec - A difficult fixture for an injury-ravaged Everton turned on a wonder goal from Matthew Taylor, who volleyed over Tim Howard from near the half-way line after barely 15 minutes. Kanu doubled the score for the home side before the half-hour and they then took a stranglehold on the game, denying Everton any real opportunity to fight back despite some early substitutions from David Moyes. A long journey home for the faithful as Everton slip to 10th.

Portsmouth vs Everton
8 Dec - Everton take their injury-stricken side to the south coast to face high-flying Pompey hoping to leapfrog Harry Redknapp's side in the table and maintain their quest for a top-four berth. Cahill, Arteta, Osman, Neville, Hibbert, Anichebe, Pistone... all are either doubtful or ruled out for what promises to be a stern test. [Updated TV]

Moyes in loan star state of mind
7 Dec - Manager David Moyes has hinted that he might follow Alex Ferguson's lead and try to bring in a few players on loan once the transfer window opens in January. Ferguson stole a march on the rest of the Premiership managers when securing the short term services of Henrik Larsson and Moyes wants to follow suit. He says, "we?re definitely down on numbers especially seeing as we lost Kevin Kilbane on transfer deadline day and that really put us just under regarding numbers."

Losses last season hit ?10M
6 Dec - One year on from "the best financial results in Everton's history", the accounts for Everton FC Co Ltd ending 31 May 2006 show a substantial loss of ?10M. The Annual Report will be presented to the Everton Shareholders at next week's AGM, and no doubt a positive spin will be applied by Mr Wyness, whose renumeration package has gone up a whopping 283% ? strange reward for the deepening financial mire and lack of real investment in the Club itself (as opposed to finding a buyer for a bloc of shares...) but it confirms thoughts expressed by some that the Club has already been spending the ?28M windfall due next year.

Everton set on Kirkby move
5 Dec - Pulling together all the various news snippets and learned pronouncements in the best fashion of his old Merseyside newspaper, Phil McNulty concludes that the move to Kirkby is ON! Quite how the machinations at LFC play into this is something of a mystery, since they ruled out ground sharing months ago, but this piece reads like another carefully constructed effort to soften up the fanbase ahead of next week's AGM. Watch this space...

Everton Res 2 - 2 Bolton Res
5 Dec - Everton Reserves have drawn 2-2 with their Bolton counterparts at Halton Stadium. First-half goals from Bjarni Vidarsson and Mark Hughes, who put the young Everton Academy side two-up at the break against a more experienced Bolton team. But the visitors equalised courtesy of a defensive mix-up and a penalty in the second half.

Five-Year Plan / Academies
5 Dec - It always helps to ask the right questions: the answers may surprise you. David Moyes says has made some progress in moving Everton forward over the last five years. But Moyes believes it will take another five years for him to bring Everton to their full potential! And he's not too impressed with the Academy system, preferring the lower league path of development instead.

On track for a 4th-place finish?
4 Dec - Three points against West Ham continues the trend of turning last season's losses into this season's wins. Steve Flanagan's statistical comparison shows Everton nosing ahead of the curve with a differential of +8 points over the same games last season. If the trend continues, that could see us finish on 61 points ? which was enough to secure 4th place in 2005!

AJ Signs DVDs tonight
4 Dec - Andy Johnson will celebrate the release of Everton?s new DVD, ?Everton 3 Liverpool 0?, with a signing session at HMV?s Church Street store in Liverpool on Monday 4 December at 6:30pm. Fans need to pick up free wristbands in advance at HMV, which will allow them access to the signing. Wristbands will be available only at the HMV store from 9:00am on Monday.

Talk about flattering scorelines?
3 Dec - David Moyes bemoaned a scoreline that flattered Man Utd on Wednesday; today the boot was on the other foot, a stoppage-time blast from James Vaughan giving this unconvincing exhibition a much better gloss than it merited. Andy Johnson was back in the starting line-up but he was very poor as Everton, without Mikel Arteta, Phil Neville and Victor Anichebe, struggled to get into the game in the first half. Andy van der Meyde was lively but no-one was on his wavelength, and it was a massive relief when Leon Osman scored after the break, following a fantastic recovery of a lost ball by Beattie. But it was then typical backs-to-the-wall defending and plenty of conceded possession until Vaughan popped up, and scored only the second goal of his interrupted Premiership career to confirm a vital win for Everton.

Everton v Blackburn Rovers
3 Dec - The draw for the Third Round of the FA Cup has been made and Everton gave been given a home draw against Premiership rivals, Blackburn Rovers.

Everton vs West Ham United
2 Dec - After two games away from home that arguably yielded two points fewer than it should have, the Blues are back at Goodison Park for the visit of West Ham. Alan Pardew's side have managed only two goals and one point on their travels so far this season... (at the risk of sounding negative) now there's a script waiting to be written. [TV]

ToffeeWeb Mailbag Back up
1 Dec - Sorry, we had a problem with the database file driving the ToffeeWeb Mailbag, but it has now been fixed. Please go ahead and submit your e.mails again using this form. Thanks for your patience!

Still better than last season
1 Dec - Steve Flanagan's comparative analysis of results this season and last, on a game-by-game basis against the same opponents, shows that Everton still have their noses in front so far, with 5 extra points. This is despite an inability to win the matches they were winning last season, but they have won others to compensate, and are still on track for a haul as high as 61 points.

With a stock of well over 50,000 Everton programmes, what better way to escape the cold of Boxing Day than get your hands on that long lost programme from games gone by. As a special thank you to customers who have visited the stall throughout the year, ALL home league programmes from the past 30 years are half price, meaning you could get your hands on the full 1984-85 Championship winning season's programmes for just a tenner, the same goes for the 1986-87 season, or the season in which Bob Latchford got his 30 goals!
