News Headlines & Features

Kilbane signs for Wigan
31 Aug - Kevin Kilbane's three-year stint at Everton has come to an end after the Irishman put pen to paper on a three-year contract ? with an option for a further year ? with Wigan Athletic. The midfielder flew back from international duty with Ireland to complete the formalities of the move across Lancashire this afternoon. Although the fee is officially undisclosed it is believed that the deal is worth a bumper ?2m; if true, David Moyes will have almost doubled his money on a player he signed for ?1.1m on deadline day in August 2003.

Quiet day expected at Goodison
31 Aug - The domestic transfer window closes at midnight tonight but while last summer Evertonians were feverishly checking news outlets in the vain hope of a striking signing, this year no incoming deals are expected. Simon Davies appears to be in the shop window while Kevin Kilbane is the subject of interest from Fulham, but hopes for a surprise midfield acquisition are likely to go unfulfilled.

Killa's future hangs in the balance
30 Aug - With Steed Malbranque set to sign for Spurs and Thomas Gravesen accepting the big purse from Celtic, most of the pre-Deadline Day speculation concerning Everton revolves around the future of Kevin Kilbane, and whether David Moyes will accept Fulham's bid of ?750k, look for more money, or reject it out of hand. The future of Simon Davies and Andy van der Meyde have also been the subject of rumour, but it would seem odd for David Moyes to start hacking away at the squad he has taken so long to build.

Vaughan on target in Reserves opener
29 Aug - James Vaughan celebrated his return to action with a goal in the Reserves' 2-2 draw at Newcastle this evening. David Weir and Tony Hibbert also played as part of their rehabilitation from injury and illness, respectively. Mark Hughes scored the Blues' second goal eight minutes from time to secure a point, while pre-season stars Patrick Boyle and Victor Anichebe were also in the line-up.

Everton: Stifling Tactics?
28 Aug - It's amazing what some reporters saw at the weekend. This bizarre assessment from The Telegraph obviously expected a lot more from Spurs, and could not find anything positive to say about Everton's "stifling tactics". What's that, then? Daring to play keep-ball and deny the other side possession? Resorting to accurate passing rather than hoofing it up for the other side to steal and build? Not a word of praise for the superb build-up and execution of both goals, especially the second from AJ. Watch him on the replay slice between those two defenders... magic! Lyndon's blog post

Magnificent Everton end 21-year hoodoo
26 Aug - Twenty one years to the day since their last win at White Hart Lane, Everton finally won a League fixture at our bogey ground. The dismissal of Kevin Kilbane after just 32 minutes didn't prevent Moyes' side from achieving one of the finest results since his appointment. Callum Davenport turned Joleon Lescott's glancing header into his own net and Andy Johnson doubled an advantage that the Blues defended admirably when he finished a terrific counter-attack by sweeping home his second of the season. The result lifts the Blues into second place behind Manchester United for the time being and perhaps changes expectations for the season. Match report

Rennie gives Moyes indigestion
24 Aug - Manager David Moyes was not overly pleased with Uriah Rennie and his team of officials last night at Ewood Park as he felt his side were denied on more than one occasion. "I've had a chance to see it, and it was a definite penalty on Andy Johnson," said Moyes. "I saw it from the touchline and I couldn't believe it wasn't given." On the overall performance Moyes seemed content with the night's effort, saying "we didn't play as well as we should have in the first half but we got to grips with things after the first 15 minutes. There's no doubt we deserved the point, and maybe more."

Sub Cahill rescues a point for Everton
23 Aug - After being surprisingly left on the bench for this first away game of the season, Tim Cahill scrambled home an 84th-minute equaliser to rescue a point for Everton at Ewood Park. Following a lacklustre first period, Benni McCarthy cracked home the opening goal five minutes after the restart. But Everton responded in positive fashion taking the game to Blackburn, and after Andy Johnson was foiled one-on-one by Brad Friedel and had valid claims for a penalty waved away by Uriah Rennie, Cahill turned a ricochet off the post into the empty net to earn the draw. Mark Atkinson's Match Report focuses on referee Rennie's glaring mistakes.

Beware the rocky roads!
22 Aug - Ever popular former player David Unsworth believes Everton can negotiate the upcoming trips to Blackburn and Tottenham with renewed confidence after last Saturday's winning start. "The Gwladys Street proved on Saturday the value of a vocal support contesting every decision, and the Blues' travelling army can help them in Lancashire tomorrow," he says. Mindful that the Blues have not won at White Hart Lane over the past twenty years, Unsworth adds, "I think sometimes players do think 'oh, oh, here we go again' about trips to particular venues, although personally I always enjoyed my visits to White Hart Lane." Time for an upturn in fortunes on our travels!

AJ's delight
21 Aug - There's a weight now off Andy Johnson's shoulders with his opening day of the season goal providing the Goodison faithful with plenty to cheer. "You don't get judged on pre-season games and friendlies, your goal record is judged in league games in the season so I am delighted to get off the mark," said the striker. Manager David Moyes is also a happy man, believing that his record signing will "gain a lot of confidence from that, but his general play was so good. He ran in behind them, he linked us up. He did a lot of good things for us out there."

Johnson on target in opening day win
19 Aug - Andy Johnson took just 14 minutes to score his first Everton goal and help the Blues to their first opening-day win in five years. Although they could have been well ahead by half time as both Mikel Arteta and Tim Cahill hit the woodwork, the combination of an enthusiastic Watford display and some horrendous refereeing meant that Everton weren't comfortable until they were awarded a dubious late penalty and Arteta stroked home from the spot. Watford ruined Tim Howard's debut and ensured a nervy injury-time period, though, with a goal by Damien Francis. Reports by Ian Delaney/Andy Unsworth and Paul Traill

Johnson looking for revenge
17 Aug - Andy Johnson hopes to play a key role in brining about the defeat of Watford in Everton's season opener at Goodison Park on Saturday, in front of a packed crowd of ferverent fans. The atmosphere was a key factor for AJ, who is relishing his new career with one of Britain's biggest clubs, and he hopes to exact some personal revenge on Watford, who beat Crystal Palace last season in the League Championship play-offs.

McFadden finally set to sign
15 Aug - James McFadden will finally put pen to paper on a new contract when he returns from international duty later this week, according the The Echo. The Scot has agreed terms on a new three-year deal. "I've always wanted to stay and that's finalised now and hopefully I can get on with my football at Everton."

Weir gets the armband
14 Aug - It has been announced that David Weir has retained the position of club captain for the forthcoming season, despite his increasing age and limited pace, with Phil Neville as his new vice-captain. Judging by our mailbag, a significant number of fans see the failure to change captain at this time as a serious backward move that confirms ? as did many of the pre-season games ? we are in for a repeat of last season's dire football and lack of progress. Tell us what you think.

Everton 0 - 1 Athletic Bilbao
12 Aug - Everton's pre-season preparations came to an end with the final friendly of the summer against Athletic Bilbao which doubled as a testimonial for Howard Kendall. All three of the new signings started but it was the visitors who took the lead through Aritz Aduriz midway through the first half. At the other end, Andy Johnson hit the bar and had a shot cleared off the line but the Blues couldn't make the breakthrough to level the match.

Hibbert sidelined by parasite
11 Aug - Tony Hibbert will miss the start of the new season, after finally getting diagnosis for the bug (Cryptosporidium parasite) that seriously curtailed his involvement in the pre-season campaign. Mick Rathbone, the Head Physio said "It's the first time for me. It seems Tony has picked up a parasite presumably when he was on his holidays. It is not that common, and the experts' advice is that he should fight it off himself. There is no actual treatment for it. But he should, in time, fight it off." Rathbone added, "He is getting a further check on Friday and if that shows that the parasite is defeated, he would still need a little bit of work before even thinking of playing a game."

Andy capped and feeling fine!
10 Aug - Dutch winger Andy van der Meyde has been fined by manager David Moyes after his recent breaking of a club curfew resulted in the player claiming his drinks had been spiked in an Albert Dock nightclub. David Moyes said, "I have spoken with Andy and he is sorry for what has happened. He will be fined because he should not have been out (on Sunday) but that is the end of the matter."

Aberdeen 2-3 Everton
8 Aug - Everton traveled to Scotland tonight for their penultimate friendly of this pre-season against Aberdeen and twice came from behind before winning the game at the death thanks to another goal by Victor Anichebe. The hosts went ahead through Gary Dempsey before Mikel Arteta set up James Beattie to equalise. And when the The Dons retook the lead through Jamie Smith capitalising on a defensive lapse, Tim Cahill restored parity, leaving it up to substitute Anichebe to fire his fourth pre-season goal.

Van Der Meyde rushed to hospital
7 Aug - Dutch winger Andy van der Meyde is this morning recovering in hospital after claims that his drinks were spiked during a night out in Liverpool. An ambulance crew was called to his home on the Wirral after he began to experience breathing problems. Police are investigating the claims made by the winger and are looking at CCTV taken at city centre bars and investigations are continuing. This is the latest farcical episode in the winger's Everton career, the player appearing only eleven times for the club and seemingly with more lives than any cat!

Moyes - "I have a dream..."
6 Aug - Delighted with his players' attitude on the recent American tour, manager David Moyes is daring to dream, in advance of the season opener against Watford on August 19. "I am a dreamer. And the dream I have is that we get Everton into a similar position to where we were a year ago," says Moyes. He added, "I hope we can be successful again. Everton's a big club so we start with high expectations, and rightly so. We've got to make sure we manage those expectations." Roll on the new season!

Reserves all set for the off
5 Aug - Everton Reserves have completed their pre-season preparations with a convincing victory over Warrington Town at Cantilever Park. Kieran Agard set the Toffees on course to victory after just three minutes. Bjarni Vidarsson and Scott Phelan added further goals in the second half to provide a decent scoreline at the final whistle. John Ruddy, Patrick Boyle and Scott Spencer were in the side.

A season to be judged on...
4 Aug - With just two more pre-season games left for the first-team squad, Andy Lea takes a looks at what we have going forward, and how the team may come together into an effective unit that can challenge for a position among the top 8. And the prospect that surely one of Moyes's teams can finally pull something off by way of a decent cup run ? why, we might even win one!

Victor opts for the Super Eagles
3 Aug - Young striker Victor Anichebe has stated that his international future lies with Nigeria and not England. He says, "I would love to represent Nigeria because that is where I'm from. My family moved to England when I was just one year old, but I still feel Nigerian." Anichebe has made steady progress at Everton, coming through the ranks but he acknowledges a long road ahead - "The main thing for me is to keep working hard as I still have a long way to get to the top."

Arteta sees plenty of good signs
1 Aug - As Everton leave Dallas and fly back to England, Mikel Arteta makes some pertinent observations: "The fans are happy because they needed to see something to help them start believing again in the team... I am going to be playing in different roles this season because the gaffer is going to change things around... Now there is more competitiveness in the team and that hopefully is going to make our level higher... There is a lot of quality on the bench and the gaffer has already shown he doesn't mind leaving players out."
