Tomorrow's clash represents an intriguing match-up between two clubs for whom a managerial switch has led to fiercely contrasting fortunes despite the respective fanfare to which both appointments were greeted. Interestingly, the divisive and seen-to-be unambitious return of 'safe hands' David Moyes has so far been transformational for the Merseysiders. Conversely, the hullabaloo that ensued over the perceived 'Second Coming of the Special One' has quickly diminished into a damp squib with the Manchester outfit already in the territory of having their worst campaign since the Premier League era began.

David Moyes's Everton go into tomorrow's game riding on the crest of a wave. Four wins and a draw in the Scot's first six games have all but secured a worry-free end to a season for the first time in 3 years. The only blemish coming against Aston Villa when he had barely set foot in Finch Farm, thereby having limited time to work with the players.

With no breaking news to be gleaned from Friday's Press Conference, Moyes has just confirmed that Everton have neither any new injuries nor returnees from the squad that beat Palace. This, I would hope, suggests that Abdoulaye Doucoure, returning from suspension, will only find his way onto the bench. His replacement, Charly Alcaraz had a performance to remember against Palace but had looked like a fish out of water when given a brief cameo out wide previously. The manager's vocal disappointment with the manner of the Malian's enforced absence may also have a bearing on whether he will merit a recall.

The visitors for their part are at the other end of the spectrum with the eagerly anticipated appointment of the Portuguese phenomenon Ruben Amorim so far overseeing a poor return in his first 14 games, with the Manchester giants only coming up trumps on four occasions with eight defeats to boot. Amorim wanted to take over in the summer in order to have the necessary time for them to adapt to his infamous system and to acquire the required personnel in order for it to prosper. The lure of Manchester United forced the managerial prodigy to accept the 'now or never' ultimatum from Ineos, a decision so far proving catastrophic — only five teams accruing fewer points than Man Utd since the day he walked through the doors of Carrington.

Moreover, the Mancs have problems all over the park. Defensively, they have been poor, especially at set pieces, In midfield, they are unbalanced with the two-man midfield requiring athletes which they don't possess to a sufficient quality while up front they are barren with none of Hojlund, Zirkzee or Garnacho scoring more than 3 league goals this season. Indeed their top marksman, Amad Diallo, has only managed 6 and he will be missing, out injured for the remainder of the campaign, so it will once again be left to Fernandes to provide their chief threat.

The defeat at Spurs encapsulated this toxic combination to a tee. A goal from Maddison coming when the entire Man Utd backline were asleep and static, open goals missed when Garnacho finished like he was in the Six Nations and centrally saw Casimeiro and Fernandes, their only fit midfield partnership, getting overrun and pulled apart at will. Evertonians have vivid memories of a veteran Brazilian enforcer; running on treacle, turning like a JCB, appearing five minutes late to every tackle and letting the attacking midfielder stroll unchecked straight to the heart of our rearguard. Now that this particular Brazilian is in red, there is a clear chance for Moyes's men to profit from this undoubted vulnerability.

Today's press conference, however, gave Manchester Utd hope with Ugarte available after illness, although Amorim didn't confirm whether he had recovered sufficiently to start. Yoro and Eriksen also return to boost a squad that only had one first teamer available on the bench last time out. The awkward feel of Amorim's Presser was more akin to that experienced under Dyche and was night and day with the relaxed nature of his opponent.

Even the bookies have Everton as slight favourites going into this match with form and momentum clearly favouring the Toffees. Not only is it a good time to play Man Utd but rarely has the Blue fanbase approached this game with such anticipation and belief for a positive outcome. Early glimpses of their spanking new stadium this week will only have further whetted the appetite for this fixture.

Despite the aforementioned, it must be stated that United traditionally have enjoyed coming to Goodison Park. Not since the days of Roberto Martinez have Everton regularly taken their scalp. In the last 10 league meetings here, only Marco Silva's 4-0 thumping and a Frank Lampard tight 1-0 victory are the sole occasions we have got the better of the Red Devils. David Moyes himself has only three wins at home in the Premier League against Saturday's opponents for the Blues, but he must surely fancy his chances of adding a fourth tomorrow.

Great job, Conor! Hope you're okay with this compromise — all of a sudden, we have match previews coming out of our ears!

I just have so little interest in or knowledge of the opposition — which is a pathetic excuse if I'm claiming to write a Match Preview! We were caught a little this time with the pre-match pressers coming so late and the game kicking off so early.

As a rule, I'd like to see a Match Preview for a weekend game up on the site by Thursday afternoon, but it would need to be updated with anything meaningful from the team pressers. If you're up for that, it could be accomplished by submitting a second version later on and updating the original, as I did with mine.

Mind you, Danny wants us focussed on the next game while he's on his way back from the previous one, so we'll have to work on an acceptable solution!

Nice work, Connor.

Our revival against their descent?

Tough one to call but I still think they have more players of a better standard than us and if they get going we could be in trouble. Hopefully our propensity for helping out strugglers won't reappear and we get a draw or win but it is a flip of the coin.

The way the last game panned out should be continuing to nettle the players who have proved (under DM’s guidance) that Sean Dyche was the proverbial ‘poor workman blaming his tools’.
United were ripe for the taking last time and still are, but any side will suddenly find some self belief if you basically self-destruct in front of them.
So it’s go out at 12:20ish today with a burning desire to set something right held rigidly under (self) control so they don’t get anything easy today and they are the ones to crumble.
As Barry says they still have some classy players but at the moment they are not coming close to forming a team, whereas we have been doing that just right for a couple of weeks now. Amad out is a big boost for us as he’s been Duracell bunny like and clinical.
Up the furious (but controlled) Toffees!

Perfect Michael thanks!! The problem with that Danny boy is that he wants every Evertonian as committed as him.

Looking forward to a good, possibly great, day.
I’m dropping my wife at the station so she can spend the weekend with her mate leaving me home “alone” with the drinks cabinet…
12.30 should see me in the pub with my middle son, Joe, to watch the game. After that I’m heading for that London to see a special screening of “Stop Making Sense” in Leicester Square with my eldest, Tomas.
Aiming to finish off the day with a big feck off smelly kebab whilst watching MOTD and highlights of an epic win.
Please God!

Thanks Conor, and Michael of course.

Despite their position and a very poor season, on their day, United do have very good and dangerous players, so we will have to be at the races.

I liked the honesty of Moyes in his pre-match interview yesterday. Not playing down expectation like Moyes of old, just being realistic.

About Everton and himself, talking about achieving stability before we think of anything further. After the trauma of the past few seasons, sensible talk. And on himself, he openly said that he could just be on the crest of a wave; the so-called new manager bounce.

Also, a nice touch regarding the changes at Finch Farm since he was last here. I don't think he was just talking about personnel, but expansion, although he didn't allude to any specifics. He said he hasn't been able to meet everyone yet, but he will. I'm sure the tea lady will have a few choice words to tell him about Koeman and Benitez!!!

The supporters, wherever they may be, are enjoying watching Everton again and there is a sense of optimism.

A very good report Conor and well done to Michael for giving Conor a pat on the back for his effort.

A good win today will set us up for a nice relaxing weekend, Doucoure in for me along with Charley and toss up between Lindstrom and Harrison whose perceived improvement is very limited to my eyes along with Mylolenko, they are all in the team because there is no one else available to play in their positions ——well until O’Neil is ready to come back.

Good comments all the way through. We know what they can do with the various gifted players they have. But, recently, it's not been happening for them. On the contrary, it has been for us, even with some of our most gifted.

I'm going for a 2-1 win for us in a tightly contested game.
