Updated Everton have taken the next step towards bringing Orel Mangala back to the Premier League with the defensive midfielder on his way to Merseyside to undergo a medical ahead of a season-long loan from Olympique Lyonnais.
The Blues were known to be pursuing another central midfield signing before this Friday’s deadline and the 26-year-old Belgian international fit the bill even though he has only just signed a permanent deal with the League 1 club this summer.
Mangala spent two years at Nottingham Forest where he made 47 league appearances but spent the last few months on loan with Lyon before agreeing a £15m move at the beginning of July. According to L'Equipe and El Bobble, earlier this week he was set to spend this season at Goodison Park if an arrangement could be struck.
This would be the second deal that Everton have pursued with Lyon this summer following the acquisition of Jake O’Brien in a 17m pound transfer last month and there is talk of interest from the Blues in winger Ernest Nuamah.

He's probably shite if Forest only just flogged him and now Lyon want to offload him.
Admittedly I've never heard of him!
Also, did he ever play for Forest? If not then he has no Premier League experience meaning Dyche won't play him anyway.

Having missed out on Phillips and Cajuste to Ipswich, this is possible I suppose but it would be a weird deal with him only having just joined Lyon. And us seeming to have no money for new players.

But looking at the deal more closely, it was Mangela who wanted to leave Forest by all accounts, and most of their fans rated him.
Lyon also paid £25 million for him with £10m being the initial loan fee. He's also had 19 caps for Belgium.
He could be a decent loan, but I'd be surprised if we activated the £33.5m fee Lyon supposedly want if the deal was made permanently. He's 26 years old. We need to get away from big fees for over 24's.

That's the problem when we have the likes of Holgate and Keane as high earners who no one wants seeing out their contracts, and Doucoure on £130k as well.

Nuamah from Lyon and Trippier would help.

17 Posted 27/08/2024 at 23:20:18
Part of the problem in the first 2 games was not being able to work the ball through the middle and yet being alarmingly poor at preventing the opposition from pretty much walking through our midfield, especially from turnovers.
If a good enough striker isn't available / doesn't fancy us, then I'll go with Plan B and improve the side elsewhere and hope altogether they form a hard to beat unit with the happy knack of sharing the goals out to a variety of players.
18 Posted 28/08/2024 at 00:27:38
Beto's limitations were evident again tonight, whilst the absence on the bench of Maupay suggests that hopefully a deal with Marseille can be resurrected.
Iroegbunam, Ndiaye and O' Brien could prove to be very good signings (pity about Young and Harrison), but If Thelwell can get rid of Holgate and Mangala comes in, the window can be cautiously regarded as a successful one.
19 Posted 28/08/2024 at 07:41:47
We need all sorts of players but can't afford them. Any striker that's a definite upgrade on Beto or Calvert-Lewin will likely cost upwards of £30M; which we don't have.
Best bet is probably the likes of Broja or Fofana on loan who may or may not improve us.
At right-back, however, we could make an upgrade pretty easily and Trippier (for example) would do that while offering cover for Mykolenko too.
20 Posted 28/08/2024 at 09:37:59
He said he's a very good defensive midfielder and they wanted him to stay but got good money. He also said don't expect goals or assists but that's not what we would be buying him for. He said it would be a very good signing and a no-brainer on loan.
I always prefer the opinion of someone who watches the player, week-in & week-out, so thought I'd share.
21 Posted 28/08/2024 at 10:01:34
A good loan, but I'd be surprised if we bought him — or could afford to buy him — next year.
22 Posted 28/08/2024 at 10:20:06
23 Posted 28/08/2024 at 11:49:39
It's one thing taking a sensible offer (sensible only if we have lined up replacements, even on-loan replacements), we can't go forwards with just Beto and an injured Chermiti. That would be suicide.
We should be keeping Calvert-Lewin and adding another striker on loan. Goals are key, we don't score many, we need to supplement attack — not deplete it.
24 Posted 28/08/2024 at 14:03:22
At 31 he's probably still better than Calvert-Lewin. Well, a better goalscorer anyway.
25 Posted 28/08/2024 at 14:15:00
Has Textor told them he's selling up to concentrate on us I wonder?
26 Posted 28/08/2024 at 14:26:31
Calvert-Lewin to Newcastle for £40M? What are you smoking...??
He is in his last year of contract. If he had a 5-year contract, we still wouldn't get £40M.
27 Posted 28/08/2024 at 14:32:18
Check his injury record, say no more.
28 Posted 28/08/2024 at 14:41:18
I am still a big fan of Gana though: I know he made a dreadful error in the Brighton game and was largely ineffective in the Spurs game, but in the run-in last season, he absolutely put himself on the line. I don't believe he is in sharp decline, he has just had a torrid start, it happens to the best players as well.
I can see a scenario where Gana is increasingly used as a sub, similarly, I think Doucoure will spend more time on the bench as Dyche assesses how best to manage the midfield. We desperately need to be better in moving the ball forward quickly and use the flanks more effectively.
29 Posted 28/08/2024 at 14:48:17
But then I believe it could be an initial loan deal with an option to sign next season?
30 Posted 28/08/2024 at 14:56:33
You mustn't have looked at Wilson's appearances for Newcastle in the last year, he's constantly injured, especially hamstring, that's why Howe wants to replace him, and no one will touch Wilson.
31 Posted 28/08/2024 at 15:08:44
I would have Wilson in a heartbeat. He scores goals when fit.
Last season, he scored 9 Premier League goals in 20 appearances (not starts); Calvert Lewin got 7 from 32. He's just a much better finisher.
32 Posted 28/08/2024 at 15:32:50
Wilson missed all of Newcastle's pre-season matches as well as the first games of the season with a back issue.
He is now facing at least 2 months on the sidelines.
33 Posted 28/08/2024 at 15:33:56
Les 26, Newcastle signed Isak in his last year for over £60M having only scored 6 goals all season for Sociedad... I live in hope!
Brian 27, okay Wilson is now crocked, received & understood.
34 Posted 28/08/2024 at 15:43:00
I would also have a fit Wilson, but for his injuries. He was lways a prolific goalscorer.
But I will say this, at Newcastle he had an attacking team from midfield, from the wings.
Even Haaland would suffer if he was at Everton.
35 Posted 28/08/2024 at 15:52:16
I've always liked Wilson though. When he went to Newcastle for £20M, I thought he was an absolute bargain.
36 Posted 28/08/2024 at 15:53:41
Last season's top scorer in the Championship, he would have slotted straight in for us.
37 Posted 28/08/2024 at 15:55:34
Having said that, Everton need more strength and back-up in midfield and with the financial constraints they can't be too choosy.
Hopefully if this goes through it proves worthwhile.
38 Posted 28/08/2024 at 15:59:02
I personally think he will struggle at the top level.
39 Posted 28/08/2024 at 16:21:55
After all the talk previously about giving Beto and particularly Chermiti minutes then, if an offer for our non-scoring goalscorer comes in, grab their hands off.
Don't even stop to think about it. He has no intention of signing a new contract (if it is still on offer) and will, if nothing else happens, run his contract down. Drop him immediately as soon as the window closes.
40 Posted 28/08/2024 at 16:49:04
Sort out how and what we want them to play first and then possibly wonder why this manager who, I'm told, sees more of them than I do, instructs them to play as they are. Perhaps it's the word 'defensive' before his position that puts me off.
41 Posted 28/08/2024 at 17:03:11
We definitely still need another midfielder because I don't think we are anywhere near to being physically strong enough in this very important position, mate.
42 Posted 28/08/2024 at 17:13:46
We are getting relegated with the current squad, so anybody different coming in can't make us any worse.
43 Posted 28/08/2024 at 17:30:48
It's good to have some options in midfield either way because we've been very easy to play through so far this season.
44 Posted 28/08/2024 at 17:53:01
If we keep Branthwaite and get Tarkowski back, then we look okay at centre-back. It's full-back and up front where we look way short. Ashley Young is a liability as demonstrated again in his brief cameo last night. We cannot keep relying on Seamus.
Is there any way we can offload Holgate, Keane and Maupay and bring in some reinforcements? There must be players in the lower leagues that would improve us. What do our scouts actually do apart from watch Premier League games and look at other teams' cast-offs?
45 Posted 28/08/2024 at 19:06:25
With Dixon, I'm more relaxed on the right-back front. His Spurs performance was really encouraging. I just hope he's ahead of Young in the pecking order there. I would still like Trippier but less panicked.
Branthwaite rumours have gone quiet so, if anything happens, it'll be 11th hour. Getting more hopeful he'll stay. Calvert-Lewin — I just don't think it'll be good for all if he stays tbh. Best for all sides if he goes now. Just not sure who'll get the goals..:: albeit wasn't like he was prolific anyways.
46 Posted 29/08/2024 at 09:23:44
If it's true, Everton should stay well clear. Crazy to commit to that kind of spend without seeing the guy play for the club.
Powers that be can't be that stupid… can they?
47 Posted 29/08/2024 at 10:05:57
The plot thickens.
48 Posted 29/08/2024 at 11:44:38
That's a start to really strengthen the squad.

50 Posted 29/08/2024 at 12:00:50
51 Posted 29/08/2024 at 12:02:13
If so how was the deal not secured if he had his medical yesterday? If it's true, we're a total disgrace.
52 Posted 29/08/2024 at 12:03:53
Because we can't believe all rumours!!
53 Posted 29/08/2024 at 12:05:49
Can anyone explain the logic in the loan with a commitment to buy, in the case of Maupay?
How does it differ to Marseille then just buying him now? Is it just a season of only part-paying his wages which will then come down in his contract with them in 9 months time?
54 Posted 29/08/2024 at 12:13:03
I'm sure I read somewhere that, for Everton to send Maupay out on loan, they would have to extend his contract, which is why Everton were hoping to sell him rather than loan him out. I don't know how accurate the report I read was though.
Perhaps, that's the reason for a commitment to buy rather than a pure loan?
55 Posted 29/08/2024 at 12:17:11
The big man could hassle defenders freeing up space and the little man, (who can control a ball and shoot) could score us some goals.
56 Posted 29/08/2024 at 12:38:42
It's the hope that kills you.
57 Posted 29/08/2024 at 12:44:56
I'm driving him.
58 Posted 29/08/2024 at 12:51:02
59 Posted 29/08/2024 at 13:05:52
Mangala AWOL.
Holgate TBD.
60 Posted 29/08/2024 at 13:18:21
Do a swap with Holgate.
61 Posted 29/08/2024 at 13:53:22
Swap Holgate for Godfrey, haha.
Y'all made my day.
62 Posted 29/08/2024 at 13:58:35
Straight loan — no obligation to buy.
63 Posted 29/08/2024 at 14:46:56
64 Posted 29/08/2024 at 16:08:21
That makes sense.
65 Posted 29/08/2024 at 16:23:21
The Internet: "Player has decided he is going to Fiorentina".
Sums it all up really.
66 Posted 29/08/2024 at 16:23:43
He could be very good but players don't have to be outstanding to be effective in the right balance of a team.
We will see…
67 Posted 29/08/2024 at 16:32:35
Interesting that Broja's move to Ipswich has 100% collapsed. Could he be worth a punt if Calvert-Lewin leaves?
68 Posted 29/08/2024 at 16:36:57
Tomorrow will be a long and interesting day.
Will Calvert-Lewinstill be an Everton player?
69 Posted 29/08/2024 at 16:47:04
The local paper seems to indicate the medical didn't go well. Whether that meant Town wouldn't agree to the obligation to buy clause so the deal collapsed?
70 Posted 29/08/2024 at 16:50:50
Joe #55, agreed but I think Ndiaye is better.
71 Posted 29/08/2024 at 17:19:02
72 Posted 29/08/2024 at 17:21:25
Now any Championship team serious about promotion need a good defence and I'm sure both would do a good job for whoever, eg, Gnonto (Leeds) £20M, Asprilla (Watford) £20M, and I'm sure there could be more. Surely a straight swop for either would benefit us and them?
Now I'm not saying either team would go for it but at least it shows that we are trying to be creative in the market instead of reactive??
73 Posted 29/08/2024 at 17:38:01
His scan showed damage to a tendon.
They pulled out of the deal because of that scan.
74 Posted 29/08/2024 at 17:39:16
Wonderful. A player whose head has been turned, now coming. How committed is he going to be I wonder?
75 Posted 29/08/2024 at 17:40:46
That said, with MorePay off the books, we might have a bit of wiggle room to subsidise a part of their wages, depending what is on offer in return.
76 Posted 29/08/2024 at 18:17:00
He's said he wants the Fiorentina move.
77 Posted 29/08/2024 at 18:18:07
78 Posted 29/08/2024 at 18:19:55
79 Posted 29/08/2024 at 18:23:42
If he comes to us, then clearly he didn't want to join Fiorentina.
80 Posted 29/08/2024 at 18:25:14
81 Posted 29/08/2024 at 18:33:53
Apparently Lyon have told him it's Everton or he stays at Lyon.
82 Posted 29/08/2024 at 18:37:18
83 Posted 29/08/2024 at 18:40:01
I believe it is mate, and he may be pulling another one soon too.
84 Posted 29/08/2024 at 18:42:09
This takeover lark is doing me skull in!
85 Posted 29/08/2024 at 18:44:35
Great utility cover.
86 Posted 29/08/2024 at 18:50:23

Lyon Struggle to Avoid Sanctions
The Lyon club, managed by American John Textor, is racing against time to sell players and accumulate €100 million (£85 million) in sales during the European summer transfer window to avoid sanctions from the DNCG, the regulatory body for football in France.
89 Posted 29/08/2024 at 18:59:20
Slow answer a bit clumsy so will fit right in. Seriously he can shore up midfield and get rid of the woeful Gana.
90 Posted 29/08/2024 at 19:03:15
Only Everton.
91 Posted 29/08/2024 at 19:15:28
92 Posted 29/08/2024 at 19:19:17
What do you see as positive or any improvement in this window, then?
93 Posted 29/08/2024 at 19:45:36
Oh, and money for Maupay, there's four.
94 Posted 29/08/2024 at 19:52:06
I appreciate he is a tad lightweight (nothing a couple of pans of Scouse won't fix) but play him centrally and we'll see a different player. Hopefully ousting the useless Doucouré!
95 Posted 29/08/2024 at 19:54:19
He doesn't own the club so how can he influence any signings we make, or don't make?
96 Posted 29/08/2024 at 19:59:32
Don't mention the lad being lightweight.
I mentioned it when signed and the class lunatic went into one.
97 Posted 29/08/2024 at 19:59:42
Well that makes five mate. But apart from those five positives ..........
Rob #95.
Just another piling on.
98 Posted 29/08/2024 at 20:45:53
How is nothing straight forward for us? Still, if we sign Mangala and a winger, I'll be content.
And hopefully Maupay's exit is confirmed tonight. I thought his video from Shawshank Redemption was a total insult.
99 Posted 29/08/2024 at 21:23:07
The Window has been open for weeks (okay we have done some business early this time) but just watch it will be a flurry of sending this that and the next thing last minute to try and get a Transfer done. Invariably ending in 'we tried but couldn't get this over the line in time'.
More worryingly if it happens the other way, someone leaves on the last day, and we have no time to even replace them.
100 Posted 29/08/2024 at 21:30:15
Ahh! and Sean don't forget we need a strong home performance against Bournemouth okay?
101 Posted 29/08/2024 at 22:56:07
His previous employer at Forest told me that he is a nice guy and a great professional. He was liked as a footballer too which is more important!
102 Posted 29/08/2024 at 23:04:05
Quite mild from Maupay really, I mean it's not as if he has ever been insulted by Everton fans who made him so welcome during his stay. On the pitch he always put the effort in but just didn't quite get the breaks.
Shock horror a blue who thinks he's ok and could have been an asset in another life.
103 Posted 29/08/2024 at 23:31:07
104 Posted 29/08/2024 at 23:52:41
105 Posted 30/08/2024 at 00:25:16
Looks like Maupay will be leaving, which is beneficial.
106 Posted 30/08/2024 at 11:20:33
McNeil
Harrison
Lindstrøm
Ndiaye
Calvert-Lewin
Beto
Chermiti
Are we really expecting >40 goals (about 6 each) from these when only 3 are likely to play at the same time in each game?
107 Posted 30/08/2024 at 11:23:05
Brilliant post — and delivered with the contempt it deserved!
108 Posted 30/08/2024 at 14:15:33
Another uninspired choice that will no doubt have us paying a big wedge in loan fees and wages.
Meanwhile Ipswich are snapping up players we should have been trying for like Forest have done previously. Strangling us without kicking a ball.
It used to be the likes of spurs, but we have plummeted that much on every level Tottingham just laugh at us.
So we are now left signing players that the predicted bottom 3 have rejected.
Still no GOALSCORERS.
STILL NO STRIKERS

109 Posted 30/08/2024 at 14:27:48
"Having missed out on Phillips."
Seriously! Thank God we did miss out on another bum.
