John Textor has poured cold water on reports that he has already identified a replacement manager for Sean Dyche should his proposed takeover of Everton go through this autumn.

The American billionaire announced yesterday in an interview on Sky Sports that he is close to agreeing the sale of his Eagle Football Group’s 45% stake in Crystal Palace, paving the way for him to complete the buy-out of Farhad Moshiri’s controlling position in Everton.

Even before that, however, there were reports that Textor was lining up Abel Ferreira, rival coach at Palmeiras to his Botafogo in Brazil, to replace Dyche who is under pressure early in the 2024-25 season following three successive defeats that left the Toffees bottom of the Premier League table heading into the first international break of the campaign.

Textor dismissed the reports but he did signal that he would challenge Dyche to see if he could manage a different profile of player to what he has typically been used to, especially at former club Burnley, as he leverages the multi-club model and, perhaps, cherry-picks from Botafogo in the future.

“I don’t know [Sean] personally. I watched him at Burnley for so many years do wonders with no budget and a challenge at the squad level, so, obviously, he’s a guy that knows how to in coach in the Premier League,” Textor told Sky’s Alan Myers in a video interview.

“I would sit down with him some day in the future and say, ‘Okay, I’m going to bring you a very different profile of player from any corner of the world. Are you interested? Are you capable? Can you coach this squad? I know you like a big, tough, tall Irish kid like Jake O’Brien, but do you like Igor Jesus, or Luis Henrique or Thiago Almada?’

“Does he have an ambition to coach that profile? Does he have a system that would work a squad which is optimised from the best players in the world? He would have every right to stay there.

“I haven’t even thought about the coaching issue and I’m dealing with lawyers and contracts and PSR things. There’s no fingerprints of mine on this club at this point and there won’t be until I’m the owner. I’ll respect the rule.”

A completely pragmatic approach from a prospective owner which is refreshing to hear.

He has not made any decisions on Dyche and wants to see if he will fit the model. I don't think Dyche will, but that remains to be seen.

I think there is a lot of fair comment at this stage, I also like the collaborative aspect of multi-club a lot. For me, it's the way forward.

We have been crying out for information – including timelines and a proposed plan going forward – and this guy is providing just that. I like the fact that he is more open to the media, unlike Moshiri and his annoying radio silences which just leads to inevitable speculation.

When people are forced to speculate, the nature of the beast tends to make it negative.

I'm liking what I'm hearing so far from Textor.

Asking a manager if he thinks he can coach a certain type of player, what exactly does he think the manger is going to say to such a query?

Hopefully no.

Nice to see that someone with absolutely zero status at the football club has no plans to replace the manager. Everybody concerned will no doubt be very relieved.

If by any chance chance he does get to own the club, I hope he does not become the “Dabbler” his rhetoric seems to indicate.

This could be the worst possible scenario, an American businessman interfering in decisions made by professional football people employed to run the football side of the business.

I remember Kevin Ratcliffe lasting about four games when a crackpot American took over Chester FC.

The fella's name was Terry Smith, and he ended up coaching the team instead, even though it was clear that he never had a clue about soccer!

I used to buy the Daily Post, just so I could read what Terry had to say because I found him hilarious, but I'm not sure many Chester fans would have felt the same way as me.

I found it interesting what Textor said about Dyche. Although he spoke sense, there is always the worry that the man might be a meddler?

One thing Textor definitely got right is that he's going to be getting a lot of stick, either way.

I admire his candid speaking and openness to be honest. It's unusual at this stage of the process for an individual to speak in detail of his intentions should he assume control, certainly compared to the bullshit emanating from the mouth of the 'Monaco based' owner. If he does manage the buyout, we can expect much better lines of communication.

Of course, it could all be absolute tosh, from someone who seeks publicity, but I hope not.

Let's wait and see, at least he's engaging with the fanbase, something we're not actually used to with the current administration.

It's a strange comment. He references 3 players, implying they are among the best in the world, none of whom would be well known to the average supporter; all play for Botafago who his investment business also owns. I wonder if Robert T has any comment on the suitability of the 3 players quoted?

Combined with our continual links to Lyon players (another Textor club), including one who actually came, this suggests how our recruitment policy is likely to operate if he takes over.

Maybe he's asking Dyche if he's okay with players mostly or wholly recruited from within the Textor empire? Or more likely, he's dropping the hint that he doesn't see Dyche as part of his plans in the event of a takeover.

Maybe this is the kick up the arse Dyche needs. He ain't getting a bigger job than this if he gets sacked.

So pick the best team, not just just your favourites. And learn how to make a bloody substitution.

I think it's refreshing to see someone who would both engage the fans in communication and also be able to have difficult conversations when needed, whoever they are with.

As opposed to Moshiri's ‘it's not my job' hiding in the background, that has largely caused this impression of a rudderless ship.

I think the Dyche comments are a succinct way of saying to him "We are moving in a direction away from your skill sets, prove me wrong."

As Paul says, a great potential comment invoking "improve, adapt or you're gone".

As ever, the proof will be in the pudding.

Textor needs to shut up altogether.

Moshiri should just go ahead now and extend Dyche one more season, so the locker room can remain stable.

He's selling the Club so what does he care about next season?

James @ 10

Probably part of the exclusivity agreement that existing contracts aren’t extended.
