Talking Points before Sunderland vs Everton

Everton will face a stern test when they take on a high-flying Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Monday.

Despite being the newly-promoted boys in the league, along with Leeds United and Burnley, the Black Cats have already made a strong mark after winning five of their first nine games. Their tally of five victories so far is just one fewer than what they managed in the entirety of their last top-flight campaign in 2016-17.

Régis Le Bris’s side came from behind to beat Chelsea 2-1 in their most recent outing, with Chemsdine Talbi scoring a 93rd-minute winner. Meanwhile, Everton will be looking to turn things around after suffering back-to-back losses against Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

The Toffees have let in five goals in two games without reply as the strikers’ goal drought continues to haunt David Moyes’s side. Beto and Thierno Barry have just one goal combined in between them and unsurprisingly, they are the centre of the discussions heading into this game.

Here are the important talking points before Sunderland vs Everton:

Will David Moyes experiment at Number 9?

The most interesting takeaway from Moyes’s pre-match press conference was when he mentioned that he might consider other options if his strikers continue to misfire.

While newcomer Barry is yet to open his goal-scoring account, he has barely been at the end of meaningful chances to score, accumulating an xG of 0.5 from nine appearances, seven of them from the bench. Beto has played a lot more but has scored only once from an xG of 3.9.

“I will look to see if there are other options and if I think I’m not getting what I want, I’ll look to see what else there is. We’ve got two people who are number nines or that way,” said Moyes.

“We’ve got one or two other people who could possibly come into that debate as well but we won’t bury our head in the sand, we’re certainly thinking about it.”

It remains to be seen whether Moyes continues to trust his strikers before deciding he’s had enough. Should he shake things around, I reckon Iliman Ndiaye and Charly Alcaraz should be the top candidates to become the new focal point of the team’s attack. Michael Keane worth a shout, perhaps?

Should Merlin Röhl start against Sunderland?

Merlin Röhl is yet to make his first start for the club since signing for Everton on Deadline Day. The German midfielder made his first appearance in the 0-0 draw with Aston Villa before suffering an injury. Röhl made his return to the pitch with cameos off the bench against Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

Early impressions of Röhl are overwhelmingly positive with Moyes and his staff speaking highly of their latest acquisition. The lanky central midfielder brings a lot of versatility along with a towering physical presence to the middle of the park.

As such, it might be worth it to consider awarding Röhl his first start in a royal blue shirt, especially in place of Idrissa Gana Gueye. The veteran midfielder hasn’t managed to replicate his fantastic form from last season and has been a passenger in several games so far this season.

Barry's had two starts.

I think the last 10 years will take another 10 years to work out of the system. We're all still traumatised, and operating on emergency functioning. 'He's still not scored! He's still not scored! What was Moyes thinking!'

And breathe...

The perennial issue of a decent central striker will continue as long as we continue to under-perform in front of goal. I genuinely believe that the best Number 9 at the club is Michael Keane, but that is not going to happen.

Beto has had his chances and doesn't look the part. It is time to either go with Barry, or play without a 'big man' up top. Having said that, Dibling is no midget, and with his pace could be an option there. (Thierry Henry began his career as a winger.)

The truth is that any option is better than Beto, and there are a few that look better than Barry, for now.

In midfield, it is definitely time to see what Röhl can do, probably alongside Garner. I think he would give us more options and we would also have two box-to-box midfielders who could prove to be a long-term solution. With either Dewsbury-Hall, Alcaraz or McNeil making up the three, we would have some creativity supporting the forward line.

It is time to get on the front foot and let teams know we are up for a game.

Beto and Gueye will be in that 11.

Nothing to see here.

Got a feeling we're going to set up to counter.

I expect Beto to start, that's how he scored his goals previously. Hopefully he's varied his finishing as most keepers will have him in their homework book!

Hard one to call really.

If we get beat tomorrow night, then the Fulham game next week, while maybe not filed under yet as a must-win, it will be getting closer to that bracket.

Looking at the present league positions, and although it is not a must-win game, being in the Bottom 8 is starting to look a little scary.

We have the quality in the team but the manager has to realize that his game plan for a Number 9 to score is not working and he needs to change it.

It seems pointless in the manager moaning about certain players not scoring and still playing them, hoping they may turn into prolific scorers.

It's getting tight at the bottom with Fulham and West Ham both winning this weekend. Even Forest got a point.

We are in the bottom 6 now and could do with at least a point tomorrow.

I think all games are must win games. If they are approached with any other mindset trouble will be ahead. Sunderland have had a great start and their fans will be hoping it will continue against us.

This is a winnable game as long as we are set up properly.

Fingers crossed.

If Moyes makes no changes tomorrow, giving Beto and Barry a rest and putting Ndiaye or Grealish or even Keane up front, then you more or less guarantee we will fail.

Fingers crossed we get the 3 points we need them otherwise this season will just be a repeat of the last 3 years of struggling to stay up. We need to bury the ghost of those years and build some luck or a decent team -- whichever gets us in a decent league position.

We need a striker, the two we have at the moment are beyond inconsistent. This has been the problem since we lost Lukaku. The foundations for a very good team are there. Some quality players.

Beto does make an effort, but to no avail. I look at Barry and get the impression he doesnt want to be here. It's a piss poor situation to be in.

I thought this season we would be finished with bottom half finishes and all that goes with it. Sadly it doesn't look like it.

Grealish is a decent player but, until we get out of our 'Give it to Grealish' fixation, you could put Haaland in there and he wouldn't do much better... he probably would obviously do a little bit better -- but you get my point.

Poor Plan A, no Plan B.

But Moyes knows what he likes and likes what he knows, I doubt he has it in him for a radical shake-up.

Prove me wrong please, Mr Moyes.

We need to mix it up. Plan A, repeat, repeat won't work now. Teams have the measure of it. It's too predictable.

Can or will Moyes change things…? Not in his nature, but it will, in the longer term be his downfall if he doesn't.

Joe McMahon

Sunderland will want to put more pressure on Moyes, they had won just 6 games all season when he took them down.

If they win tonight they will have won 6 already and go 2nd. We will never get that with Moyes.

Moyes needs to get the ball progressed forward faster.

Rarely does the centre-forward get a pass played that he can run onto. Build up is far too slow.

Jerome # 8 - I think you have hit the nail on the head there. If Beto is going to score, 6 times out of 8 it will on the break using his not insignificant pace.

To me, that would require Grealish playing deeper in a more central role.

Pickford,
O'Brien, Tarkowski, Keane, Mykolenko
Dibling, Garner, Grealish, Röhl, Ndiaye
Beto.

Whatever line-up starts, they need to get at Sunderland from the off because we need 3 points.

Xhaka has to be signing of the season.

How Sunderland got is mind boggling.

Tbh, I'd take all the Sunderland scouting and recruitment staff over our shite lot any day.

Sunderland's signings all walked into the first team at least.

Paul Hewitt
18 Posted 03/11/2025 at 12:19:06
Daniel @17. Exactly.

Sunderland sign young foreign players who go straight into their first team. We sign players that the manager says will take time to fit in. Mind boggling.

Jimmy Carr

I was just reading elsewhere about how Brighton's much admired recruitment is underlined by patience regarding new signings. I think we could do with a bit of that regarding Barry and Dibling, at least Moyes is showing some.

Watching the press conference, I was also surprised at how relaxed he appeared, perhaps he thinks we are close to getting results, and I suppose the outcome against Spurs was not indicative of the game itself.

All that said, we need to get something from tonight's match. On paper, we should be the equal of them, I would take a point at the moment.

Regarding the striker, I think Beto may get the nod again. Personally, I'd like to see Alcaraz given a go, not Ndiaye. Alcaraz can use his head and has a shot on him, we'd have to change our way of playing to accommodate Ndiaye as a nine, and I don't think we're good enough to do that.

That said, they may have already tried a few changes at Finch Farm, who knows? To be honest, I don't really care, I would just like us to start scoring goals again and getting results, regardless of who plays upfront.

If he plays his usual team, then there is only one outcome.

Moyes needs to change things because every club as sussed us out. Change the team and tactics. But I won't hold my breath.

Michael Bennet
21 Posted 03/11/2025 at 14:54:11
There will be no change unless the 2 strikers get injured.

Moyes has always been like this, even if it gets him the sack, which it probably will sooner or later... coyb.

Being satisfied with a point is not good enough. That’s why we had Moyes with us for 11 years. He and Kenwright were satisfied with being average.
Sunderland and their fans will be dreadfully disappointed if they don’t win this one- that’s how badly we are viewed by most teams.
If Moyes doesn’t change things that view will continue.

We've had 10 football weekends and Everton have already had to play 2 away games on a Monday night with a 3rd coming against United. Quite unbelievable when there are 20 teams in this league.

Factor in that there have been ridiculous big decisions given against us by officials in nearly every single game so far. And plenty of minor ones too, that affect games more than people realise, I absolutely dread our games coming round.

It just isn't enjoyable knowing that yet again we will probably suffer from the hands of the ref and VAR and that our club seems to be blind to an obvious massive problem.

Nothing ever changes. No right back, no goal scorer and corrupt officials.

COYB!

After this season's bright start I was looking forward to Everton's upcoming games. They soon cured me of that optimism. Now each game carries the same sense of foreboding as the previous seasons did as we drift down the league once again. Just grind out yet another season. Right now mid table is looking good to me. Because that's about the best we can hope for. Looks like Moyes improvements have turned out to be short lived.

I think Keane is a good shout. I remember Steve Watson played up front and if remembered right he scored a hat trick against either Leeds of Newcastle. Actually I think it was Leeds as I remember us shouting Peter Ridsdale and weres you money gone!!

Garner RB, KDH as an 8, Alcaraz as a 10, tell Barry or Beto get in the box as much as you can.
Jay Harris
27 Posted 03/11/2025 at 16:05:38
Time for Rohl to take over MF and Charly to have a chance in his favoured position.

Move Garner to RB, give Gana Guye a rest and tell Beto to have a fight with their defenders.

Frank, tbf we've lost 4 games, two of which were away against the reigning champions, and the (imo) Champions elect.

The Leeds defeat was annoying but newly promoted team at their home first game and VAR in on the plot in a close game isn't a fair barometer.

And last week when a good goal was ruled out that would have changed the game.

Were not back to being shit just yet - there are signs of improvement and reasons for you to regain that optimism.

I hope we win tonight and again on saturday, but until we have a decent striker and attacking full backs we wont pull up any trees just yet.

BTW - is number 10 Charlys preferred positon?

Hopefully Everton's set piece play will have improved at both ends. Preventing goals and helping with scoring them. That would certainly change the dynamics going forward, when fouling a Everton player would be paid for.Currently the opposition can foul and it is costing them nothing.

Jerome has it right - we're too slow in the build up.

No pace at full back, no pace in the midfield, can't press very well.

Garner has to play right-back. Alcaraz has to play. Rohl has to come into the starting XI.

Mark @ 28, Dat's my boy, and that's the positives being picked from the Everton carcass to date. Need more optimists on here, to be honest, I'm convinced that many naysayers on here, are R S's purporting to be Blues !

Tricky domestic environment tonight (the Mrs is a Mackam supporter). Spare room beckons - via command or choice depending on the result.

We need something to happen soon for Betty - the Beto/Barry gamble - let's hope it's tonight on the counter.

The draws against Villa and West Ham felt like 2 points lost, a draw tonight would feel like a point won for each in this household!

Christy Ring

I’d play Coleman, O’Brien centre-back. Garner has to stay in midfield, Alcaraz more forward instead of Dewsbury-Hall, Dibling on the right and Ndiaye at 9??
